History-Making: Janet Mock Signs Multi-Million Dollar Netflix Deal, Becoming First Black Trans Woman To Make Landmark Move

Source: Daniel Zuchnik / Getty Janet Mock Signs Landmark Multi-Million Dollar Deal With Netflix Writer, director, producer and activist Janet Mock is making history thanks to a historic deal with Netflix. According to Variety , Mock signed a three-year, multimillion-dollar pact with the streaming company, giving them exclusive rights to her TV series and a first-look option on feature film projects. The deal makes Mock the first out transgender woman to call major creative shots at a big content company. As part of Mock’s agreement, she will serve as an executive producer and director on Ryan Murphy ‘s forthcoming Netflix series Hollywood.  Murphy is the man behind such hit series as Glee, American Horror Story and Pose . Despite being apart of the Netflix brand, Mock will still be allowed to continue as a director and writer on Pose , which is an LGBTQ drama set in New York City’s ballroom scene. On top of all this, the Netflix deal will allow Mock to create programs that employ and highlight communities that have historically been marginalized by Hollywood — including women of color and trans people. “As someone who grew up in front of the TV screen, whether that was watching talk shows or family sitcoms or VHS films, I never thought that I would be embraced,” Mock said in a statement. “And more than embraced. Given not just a seat at the table but a table of my own making.” Mock says she hopes the deal “will be a huge signal boost, industrywide, to empower people and equip them to tell their own stories.” She’s currently interviewing creative executives for her yet-to-be-named production banner. Projects being developed include a college-set drama exploring a young trans woman’s life, a series about New Orleans after the abolishment of slavery and a reboot of a celebrated sitcom. Congrats to Janet and we’ll keep you posted as the projects go from development to screen. Until then, peep Janet’s reaction to the deal below! Today, @JanetMock makes history as the first Black trans woman to establish an overall deal with a major studio. “…there's potential to introduce hundreds of millions of viewers to trans people, and showing people who may not understand us, that we can tell our own stories.” pic.twitter.com/nXhaW0STvo — Strong Black Lead (@strongblacklead) June 19, 2019

Oprah & Gayle Agree With Ava, Don’t Like Being Called ‘Aunties’ Because They’re Not ’85-Year-Old’ Elders

Source: Earl Gibson III/Wire Image / Getty Ain’t no “Hey Auntie”… Oprah And Gayle Talk Their “Auntie” Nicknames Balling besties Oprah and Gayle know that you colloquially call them “Auntie Oprah” and “Auntie Gayle”—and they’d like you to stop. The duo recently chatted with Oprah’s OprahMag.com about the term after their friend Ava Duvernay admitted that being called “Auntie” isn’t her favorite. In case you missed it, Queen Ava (she prefers that moniker) told Van Lathan during his “The Red Pill” podcast that while she gets that people respectfully refer to her as “Auntie Ava”, it’s actually a bit ageist and not her favorite term of endearment. “Auntie Ava? Why? Am I that old?!” asked the 46-year-old. “Because I don’t feel that old! And it’s not a respect thing…Auntie Ava, like…Aunt Jemima?” View this post on Instagram Tomorrow on The Red Pill. Me and @Ava are having as much fun as it looks like we’re having. A post shared by Van Lathan (@vanlathan) on Jun 3, 2019 at 9:37pm PDT According to Ava’s fellow famous homegirls, she’s exactly right. Oprah and Gayle told OprahMag.com that the term sounds like it’s for older women—but Oprah’s okay with it in when she’s in Africa. “I cringe being called Auntie or Mama by anybody other than my nieces or godchildren,” Oprah says. “Except if I’m in Africa, where it’s the custom for everybody to refer to anyone older as ‘Sister,’ or ‘Auntie,’ depending on the age difference. And there, no one refers to anyone older by their first name, out of respect.” As for Gayle, she thinks the appropriate age to start using the title Auntie for an elder is “somewhere around…85.” Gayle is 64. “I hate being called Auntie. That’s what you say to old people or the old lady who lives in the neighborhood!” said Gayle. I get that it’s a sign of respect, but no one’s calling Beyoncé ‘Auntie Beyoncé!’ The only ones who should be calling me ‘Aunt’ are my niece and nephew—and they don’t add the ie.” So what would they prefer to be called? How about their actual names? “As for what this trio would prefer to be called instead? Gayle responded “Gayle works!” while Oprah said: “Oprah has worked pretty well for me. Though sometimes strangers refer to me as Lady O, which feels friendly, yet respectful of the age difference. It feels appropriate.” And on Twitter, DuVernay shared that she “happily responds” to names like “Ms. DuVernay,” “Sis,” and “Queen.” For the record, I happily respond to: “Hello, Ms. DuVernay” “Hello, Sis.” “Hello, Queen.” “Hello, Family.” “Hello, Ava” (safest bet) Ms. Ava is fine if you’re under 18. Thanks for showing me respect regardless, Van. Had fun talking to you. Wishing you all good things. — Ava DuVernay (@ava) June 4, 2019 What do YOU think about Auntie Oprah, Gayle, and Ava speaking out on this term of endearment??? View this post on Instagram Tag the @oprah to your @gayleking or the @gayleking to your @oprah in honor of #BestFriendsDay ( : @elischmidtphoto) A post shared by O, The Oprah Magazine (@oprahmagazine) on Jun 8, 2019 at 11:01am PDT It’s interesting to see how these ladies are speaking out against the term when others like Aunti Loni (Love) embrace it.   We’ll take notes on Oprah, Gayle, and Ava—-we’ve DEF called all three of them “Auntie” in the past.

Be Safe Tho: Baltimore Uber Driver Charged For Allegedly Raping One Of His Passengers

Source: Justin Sullivan / Getty Uber Driver Receives Multiple Charges For Raping Baltimore Woman With every story that breaks about these ride sharing apps, it becomes more and more difficult to trust these drivers, and here’s another incident that drives home the exact sentiment. An Uber driver in Baltimore has been charged with raping one of his passengers in the back seat of his car. Police charged 31-year-old Joshua Robinson with rape and assault on Friday after he reportedly raped and assaulted a 25-year-old woman on the night of June 1. According to investigators on the case, someone ordered an Uber to pick the woman up to be taken home at around 10:30 p.m. When she didn’t make it home on time, her father panicked and used a phone app to find her location. That is when, officials said, she was found in the area of Jenifer Road and W. Timonium Road. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When the woman’s worried father arrived at the location, he saw a car parked and ended up walking right up to it. When the father opened the door, he found his daughter lying in the back seat of the vehicle appearing “visibly upset.” Robinson was also in the back seat. After that, the father and Robinson got into an argument, in which Robinson punched the man in his face and got into his driver’s seat after throwing the victim’s purse out of the car. Finally, Robinson then fled the scene. Joshua Jamaal Robinson was arrested on Thursday and charged with second-degree rape, third-degree sex offense, fourth-degree sex offense and two counts of second-degree assault. He is currently being held without bond at the Baltimore County Department of Corrections. Officials from Uber ended up releasing a statement, saying the following: “What’s been reported is appalling beyond words. We removed the driver from the app as soon as this was reported to us. We will work with police on their investigation.” And there you have it. Do you still trust these ride-sharing apps to get you to your destination safely?
