Fox TV Show Ads Removed From Buses Over Complaints Of Racism And Sexism A number of ads featuring Octavia Spencer’s face next to the words “Scary B***h” had to be removed from L.A. buses this week after complaints they were racist AND sexist. Via Los Angeles Times reports : An advertisement for the new Fox television show “Red Band Society” was abruptly pulled from Los Angeles Metro buses Thursday after activists complained it was racist and offensive. The ads for the series that premiered this week show actress Octavia Spencer next to the words “Scary Bi**h.” Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Mark Littman said the agency decided to remove the ad because that label “denigrates women.” “That speaks for itself,” Littman said. “That was not acceptable.” The ads, which have been up for five weeks, will be removed from 190 Metro buses as soon as possible, said Metro spokesman Dave Sotero. The announcement was made Thursday at a Metro committee meeting where a few dozen protesters showed up to speak against the ads. Among them was Jasmyne Cannick, who said the nickname perpetuates negative stereotypes about black women. “I don’t know if I find it more offensive because I’m black, or more offensive because I’m a woman,” said Cannick, 36. “I sometimes think our city forgets that there are black people that still live here and call Los Angeles home.” A Fox spokeswoman said in a statement that network executives were notified Thursday morning of the concerns around the ads and “immediately offered to remove the language.” “Metro Los Angeles ultimately decided to take down the ads, and we respect that decision,” the spokeswoman said. “We sincerely apologize if the copy was offensive to viewers.” Do you think it was a legit complaint or are people overreacting? The reality star recently took to Compton’s Optimal Christian Academy, a black-owned school, to give a $5,000 donation to repair their dilapidated playground. She also noted that she previously took “Basketball Wives L.A.” cameras with her to visit the school but the footage never aired. However, it never made the final cut and never ended up on the actual show. The purpose of the visit was to establish a school with needs, I could donate to because I was having a big dress sale event and wanted to donate the proceeds. Due to all the drama that transpired during the season, I decided not to involve the women in what I wanted to be such a positive event and it never happened. Because I went to the school and told then I was going to help fix up their playground I decided I needed to keep my promise and fulfill it. Yesterday, I took my own camera and make sure only what was real was captured. The beautiful students and staff were all there to greet me and it was just amazing . The playground had holes in the asphalt and needed patching. My donation was enough to cover it and was so graciously appreciated. This school is a black-family-owned school and it feels good to be able to help out people like me. Old Man Dressed In Women’s Busted For Shaking His Genitals Out Window Via WTSP reports: Deputies in Hernando County say they’ve arrested an 81-year-old resident of an assisted living facility for exposing himself to people from his apartment window. According to the Sheriff’s Office, 81-year-old Fred Reede came to his bedroom window Monday afternoon at the Vista Grand Assisted Living Facility, which overlooks a swimming pool. Reede allegedly was wearing a bright red bra and panties, and he then exposed himself, shaking his genitals at the residents in the pool area. The person who called deputies says he was at the pool with his young children at the time. The children did not see what happened, but the parent had to get them out of the pool and leave the facility. Another witness told investigators she had seen Reede on with a “bikini” top and no bottoms on. She said it was not the first time she had seen the resident dressed this way. When deputies met with Reede, they say he was wearing hot pink panties and a hot pink bra. Reede allegedly told them he did not expose himself in any way, but admitted he occasionally does wear the women’s undergarments while standing in front of his bedroom window. The property manager told investigators she had previously counseled Reede in the past that he could wear whatever underwear he wanted, but needed to keep his window shades down while doing so. Reede was arrested and charged with one count of exposure of sexual organs. SMH!!!!!

Atlanta Hawks Owner Bruce Levenson Sells Team After Racist Emails Surface Atlanta Hawks owner Bruce Levenson announced on Sunday that he would be selling his controlling interest in the team, and NBA commissioner Adam Silver issued the following statement about an old email in which he expressed offensive views: Via CBS Sports : Following Bruce Levenson notifying the league office this July of his August 2012 email, the NBA commenced an independent investigation regarding the circumstances of Mr. Levenson’s comments. Prior to the completion of the investigation, Mr. Levenson notified me last evening that he had decided to sell his controlling interest in the Atlanta Hawks. As Mr. Levenson acknowledged, the views he expressed are entirely unacceptable and are in stark contrast to the core principles of the National Basketball Association. He shared with me how truly remorseful he is for using those hurtful words and how apologetic he is to the entire NBA family – fans, players, team employees, business partners and fellow team owners – for having diverted attention away from our game. I commend Mr. Levenson for self-reporting to the league office, for being fully cooperative with the league and its independent investigator, and for putting the best interests of the Hawks, the Atlanta community, and the NBA first. We will be working with the Hawks ownership group on the appropriate process for the sale of the team and I have offered our full support to Hawks CEO Steve Koonin, who will now oversee all team operations. The NBA and its teams have long had in place anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policies in order to facilitate respectful and diverse workplaces. Earlier this summer, the league re-doubled its efforts by, among other things, making it mandatory for all league and team personnel to receive annual training on these issues. The email was racist in nature, and Levenson expressed his remorse for it in a statement: “Over the past several years, I’ve spent a lot of time grappling with low attendance at our games and the need for the Hawks to attract more season ticket holders and corporate sponsors. Over that time, I’ve talked with team executives about the need for the Hawks to build a more diverse fan base that includes more suburban whites, and I shared my thoughts on why our efforts to bridge Atlanta’s racial sports divide seemed to be failing. In trying to address those issues, I wrote an e-mail two years ago that was inappropriate and offensive. I trivialized our fans by making clichéd assumptions about their interests (i.e. hip hop vs. country, white vs. black cheerleaders, etc.) and by stereotyping their perceptions of one another (i.e. that white fans might be afraid of our black fans). By focusing on race, I also sent the unintentional and hurtful message that our white fans are more valuable than our black fans. If you’re angry about what I wrote, you should be. I’m angry at myself, too. It was inflammatory nonsense. We all may have subtle biases and preconceptions when it comes to race, but my role as a leader is to challenge them, not to validate or accommodate those who might hold them. I have said repeatedly that the NBA should have zero tolerance for racism, and I strongly believe that to be true. That is why I voluntarily reported my inappropriate e-mail to the NBA. High-Schoolers Dump Urine, Feces And Spit On Autistic Teen Via Raw Story reports: An Ohio woman said classmates dumped a bucket full of feces, urine, and spit on her autistic son – who believed he was taking part in the ALS “ice bucket challenge.” The mother said she found video of the incident on her 15-year-old son’s cell phone, reported WJW-TV. “He was embarrassed because he did not know what the contents were until afterwards and then he didn’t want anybody to know,” said the boy’s mother, identified only as Diane. “They used his phone to tape it and they put it up on Instagram.” Diane reported the incident to police, who are investigating, and she said she publicized the case to make other parents aware of the bullying. “The bucket challenge is supposed to be raising awareness for this disease and now they’ve turned it into a sick joke,” said the victim’s mom. “I just can’t understand why kids would do something this cruel.” Participants in the ice bucket challenge record video of themselves pouring cold water over their heads, make a donation to the ALS Foundation, and then post the video on social media. In the prank video, the Bay High School student stands in front of a garage wearing only underwear as a bucket containing bodily fluids and cigarette butts is poured over his head by someone on the roof. “It’s disturbing to watch, you can obviously tell that somebody has been taking advantage of there,” said Detective Kevin Krolkosky, of Bay Village police. Via Telegraph UK: Two mentally impaired half-brothers were freed on Tuesday after serving three decades in a United States prison for the rape and murder of a child that they did not commit. A judge in Robeson County said that Henry Lee McCollum, 50, North Carolina state’s longest-serving death-row inmate, and Leon Brown, 46, were innocent of the 1983 rape and killing of 11-year-old Sabrina Buie after new DNA evidence came to light. Both are severely intellectually disabled and were teenagers at the time of their arrests in 1983. Following false confessions, McCollum was given a death sentence and Brown was serving life for the rape. “This case highlights in a most dramatic manner the importance of finding the truth,” said Ann Kirby, attorney for Brown. “Today, truth has prevailed, but it comes 30 years too late for Sabrina Buie and her family, and for Leon, Henry, and their families. “Their sadness, grief, and loss will remain with them forever.” North Carolina state law now requires homicide interrogations to be recorded or videotaped, but at the time the brothers were convicted such laws were not in effect. Hopefully the DNA results will lead North Carolina to the person who actually raped and murdered Sabrina Buie. SMH.

Transgender Teen Sues South Carolina DMV For Removing His Makeup Via Gawker reports: A South Carolina 16-year-old is suing the state Department of Motor Vehicles, claiming he was told to remove his makeup before he could have his driver’s license photo taken. Chase Culpepper wears makeup and women’s clothing nearly every day, and identifies as gender non-conforming. The teen says he was told he couldn’t get his driver’s license unless he posed for a clean-faced photo, because his makeup could be considered a “disguise.” “They said he was wearing a disguise,” said Chase’s mom, Teresa Culpepper, who filed suit on his behalf, “It was very hurtful. He was absolutely devastated. That’s who he is 24/7.” The lawsuit (PDF), which names the director of the South Carolina DMV and the manager of the Anderson, S.C., branch where Chase got his license, asks that Chase be allowed to retake his photo with the makeup on. A DMV spokesperson told WYFF that the employees followed a policy that’s been in place since 2009. It reads, “At no time will an applicant be photographed when it appears that he or she is purposely altering his or her appearance so that the photo would misrepresent his or her identity.” Chase and his mom say it’s the photo without makeup that misrepresents his identity. Their lawsuit also seeks to have that policy changed, claiming it’s unconstitutionally overboard and gives too much discretion to DMV employees.
