Q-Tip Talks About Kanye’s Confederate Flag Merchandise Via The Grio reports: Q-Tip, the legendary member of A Tribe Called Quest, has weighed in on the controversy swirling around Kanye West’s decision to feature the Confederate flag on merchandise being sold on his Yeezus tour. The “News Slaves” rapper has pushed back against his critics, claiming “it’s my flag” and arguing that his use of the imagery, which is normally associated with bigotry and pro-slavery views, is an attempt to subvert its meaning. “I just think people look cool in it. Now the ladies can’t let it hang either… Florida City Wants To Extend Sagging Pants Ban To Include Women If you’re a woman and plan on visiting Opa-Locka, Florida any time soon, you might want to leave those low rise jeans at home. via Fox News Women with saggy pants aren’t welcome in Opa-Locka. While the South Florida city banned pants that expose undergarments in 2007, commissioners are considering revising the ordinance to allow police officers to ticket men — and women — who violate the rule. The Miami Herald reports Commissioner Dorothy Johnson is sponsoring the change. She says she believes some women in the city need to improve their image. She wants to get some community feedback before offering the potential ordinance revisions in December. Violators currently face a $500 fine, which is double the original amount, or 25 hours of community service. Toronto Mayor Rob Ford says he smoked crack about a year ago in a “drunken stupor.” Toronto Mayor Rob Ford Admits To Smoking Crack Rocks Via The Globe & Mail reports: “Yes, I have smoked crack cocaine but … am I an addict? No. Have I tried it? Probably in one of my drunken stupors, probably approximately about a year ago,” Mr. Ford said on Tuesday. “I answered your question. You ask the question properly, I’ll answer it. Yes, I’ve made mistakes. All I can do now is apologize and move on.” As reporters tried to ask where and how often he used crack, Mr. Ford suggested he was too drunk to recall details. “You guys kept referring to alcohol, there was a couple of isolated incidents, there’s been times when I’ve been in a drunken stupor, that’s why I want to see the tape,” he said. “I want everyone in the city to see the tape. I’d like to see this tape. I don’t even recall there being a tape or a video.” Earlier in the day, two Toronto city councillors were attempting to limit Mayor Rob Ford’s powers via a notice of motion to be presented this month and debated in December. The motion, tabled by councillors John Filion and Paul Ainslie, sets the stage for a showdown at the December council meeting. It asks that city council suspend the mayor’s power to appoint and dismiss the deputy mayor and standing committee chairs. It would remove the mayor’s ability to shuffle the members of his executive committee and hand that power over to city council at large. The motion cites the police documents and investigations revealed last week as the motivation to strip the mayor of his ability to pick and choose his executive committee. “It appears that a majority of members of council and a significant number of members of the executive committee have expressed serious concerns about the mayor’s ability to lead the city government at this time,” the motion reads. “He’s got to step aside. SMH Poll Shows 1 In 4 Americans Approve Of Blackface In the wake of the abundance of blackface Halloween costumes that invaded seemingly all of social media recently, a new poll has emerged proving that 1 in 4 Americans think blackface is acceptable. via The Grio surprising new poll from Huffington Post/YouGov, in the wake of several blackface Halloween controversies, has found that at least 4 in 10 Americans see no problem with darkening your skin for a costume. Despite widespread criticism directed at actress Julianne Hough and others, “43 percent of Americans think it’s acceptable for a white person to wear blackface in order to appear as a black person on Halloween, while only 37 percent think it’s unacceptable.” Their poll also found a slim majority approving of dressing as an “ethic stereotype.” There was a clear racial divide in the results. Whites were roughly split down the middle about whether blackface is appropriate for Halloween. Forty-six percent of whites said it was OK, while 43 percent said it isn’t.
