Marcus Ingram/Getty Images Rumor control… Quad Responds To Toya Bush-Harris’ “Married To Medicine Reunion” Shade A “Married To Medicine” star/talk show host is once again responding to rumors that she secretly doesn’t want children. Ms. Quad was recently asked to address the ridiculousness during an episode of TV One’s “Sister Circle” talk show. During the show’s “Full Circle” segment Quad and her fellow cohosts asked the question, “Do kids complete a marriage?” before playing a clip from the “Married To Medicine” reunion. In it, Andy Cohen asks Toya Bush-Harris to speak on Quad’s marriage to Dr. Gregory Lunceford and Toya shadily says that Quad is not her husband’s “everything” because she won’t give him what he really wants; a child. Andy Cohen: “Do you think Quad is Greg’s everything?” Toya: “The reality is, in the beginning, five years ago you [Quad] were saying that children was not your focus, your focus was securing your bag. The only thing he’s ever asked for is a child, so no, I guess she’s not.” Quad clapped back at Toya’s statement on “Sister Circle” and reiterated that the state of her marriage is not “conducive” for a child. “I don’t know what makes Toya so qualified to speak on my life and anyone else,” said Quad. “She stated something that was untrue. I’ve always wanted to have children and still do want to have children, however, I am unselfish enough to know that right now my marriage and the state of my marriage is not conducive to a positive environment for a child.” Speak your truth Quad! Part 2 of the “Married To Medicine” reunion airs tonight Friday, March 16 at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo. Charles Sykes/Bravo/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images Continue reading →
KAREN BLEIER/AFP/Getty Images National Geographic Discusses Racist Past Coverage The new issue of National Geographic is dedicated to race — which is complicated by the fact that the magazine has a racist history. So, National Geographic’s EIC Susan Goldberg decided to fess up and face the publication’s problematic past head on: I’m the tenth editor of National Geographic since its founding in 1888. I’m the first woman and the first Jewish person—a member of two groups that also once faced discrimination here. It hurts to share the appalling stories from the magazine’s past. But when we decided to devote our April magazine to the topic of race, we thought we should examine our own history before turning our reportorial gaze to others. It’s not exactly an apology, but Goldberg goes on to detail how the magazine enlisted University of Virginia professor John Edwin Mason to dive into their archives and uncover exactly how racist they were: What Mason found in short was that until the 1970s National Geographic all but ignored people of color who lived in the United States, rarely acknowledging them beyond laborers or domestic workers. Meanwhile it pictured “natives” elsewhere as exotics, famously and frequently unclothed, happy hunters, noble savages—every type of cliché. Unlike magazines such as Life, Mason said, National Geographic did little to push its readers beyond the stereotypes ingrained in white American culture. We’ve seen those old issues of National Geographic but for a refresher, the article touches on how the magazine sent a writer and photographer to the coronation of Haile Selassie in Ethiopia in 1930, a time when the publication NEVER would have covered such an event in the United States or even allowed an African American person National Geographic membership. There’s also stuff like this: In 1941 National Geographic used a slavery-era slur to describe California cotton workers waiting to load a ship in California: “Pickaninny, banjos, and bales are like those you might see at New Orleans.” And this: In a full-issue article on Australia that ran in 1916, Aboriginal Australians were called “savages” who “rank lowest in intelligence of all human beings.” Goldberg also notes a 1962 story about South Africa completely fails to mention the massacre of 69 black South Africans by police in Sharpeville just two years before, not even bothering to consult black South Africans at all. Goldberg concludes by looking forward: In two years, for the first time in U.S. history, less than half the children in the nation will be white. So let’s talk about what’s working when it comes to race, and what isn’t. Let’s examine why we continue to segregate along racial lines and how we can build inclusive communities. Let’s confront today’s shameful use of racism as a political strategy and prove we are better than this… We hope you will join us in this exploration of race, beginning this month and continuing throughout the year. Sometimes these stories, like parts of our own history, are not easy to read. But as Michele Norris writes in this issue, “It’s hard for an individual—or a country—to evolve past discomfort if the source of the anxiety is only discussed in hushed tones.” Do you think that she said ENOUGH though? It’s one thing to say she’s not comfortable with the magazine’s past, but should she and the magazine’s publishers be MORE APOLOGETIC? What do you think? Hit the flip for a glimpse of what the Race issue will touch on.

(Photo by Paul Archuleta/FilmMagic) Keri Hilson Speaks On Depression After already tearfully speaking on her musical hiatus that was caused by “hitting rock bottom” , Keri Hilson is speaking on her depression battle. The songstress recently spoke on the mental health issue that she said was sparked by “personal and professional mistakes” (that Beyoncé diss?) and a breakup of an 11-year relationship. “When ‘Pretty Girl Rock’ was at the top of the charts, I was bearing the weight of some personal and professional mistakes and they just weighed so so so heavy on my spirit, and I was just not myself,” said Keri at the Silence The Shame Panel according to XoNecole. Although I was at the mountain of my life, really the trajectory of my dream – I was at the pinnacle, you know? I was severely unhappy and then add to that, this is when I decide to jump out of an eleven-year relationship. Bad decision, bad timing,” Keri added. “But it all just kind of spiraled for me, and became something I had never been through. I had never recognized myself as a person who can’t pick themselves back up. I mean, I was literally on stage crying.” Prince Williams/ATLPics.net Keri also added that stories and headlines in the media greatly affected her because of “attacks on her character.” “You don’t know where a person is, it’s not just about what you are feeding your audience, but what you are doing to the creators. There are a lot of undeserving people that are being attacked by just a headline,” Keri shared. “You don’t understand some of the worst days of my life were from a lie. An attack on my character. And I am an amazing person. I do say that because I’ve done the work to become that and all I ever wanted to be was just a great human being.” Keri now says she’s not “all the way clear” but in the “clear.” We’re so glad you’re feeling better Ms. Keri Baby and we can’t wait to hear new music. Shoutout to Shanti Das and Silence The Shame for sparking this conversation. Continue reading →
