Someone we actually like… Ava Duvernay Hosts Queen Sugar Screening At The 2016 Essence Festival During this year’s 2016 Essence Music Festiva l, film impresario Ava Duvernay held a private screening for her forthcoming OWN series. Titled “Queen Sugar” the drama tells the story of a New Orleans based family facing harsh realities, scandals and day to day effects of the prison industrial complex. BOSSIP was in attendance for the screening and watched as Duverany excitedly introduced her cast consisting of mainly newcomers Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner, Kofi Siriboe, Omar Dorsey, Tina Lifford, Dondre Whitfield and Nicholas Ashe. Serial Subject Adnan Syed Granted New Trial 16 Years After Murder Conviction The subject of NPR’s podcast Serial Adnan Syed has been given a new lease on life after being convicted of murdering his high school girlfriend Have Min Lee reports The Baltimore Sun : A Baltimore judge has vacated the murder conviction of Adnan Syed, the subject of the popular “Serial” podcast that explored his case, and granted his request for a new trial. The order from retired Judge Martin Welch was handed down in an order Thursday afternoon. Syed has been serving a life sentence since being convicted in 2000 of killing ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, a Woodlawn High School classmate, and burying her body in Leakin Park. Welch wrote in his opinion that Syed’s trial attorney “renedered ineffective assistance when she failed to cross-examine the state’s expert regarding the reliability of cell tower location evidence.” Syed’s attorney, C. Justin Brown, broke word of the judge’s ruling on Twitter. “WE WON A NEW TRIAL FOR ADNAN SYED! #FreeAdnan,” he wrote. Reached by phone, Syed’s brother Yusuf said the family was “feeling great.” “I had a feeling in my heart it was going to happen,” he said. “We are just very happy. Two Florida Men Arrested After Bragging On Facebook About Burglary Two Florida men have been arrested and a third is still on the run after they were busted bragging on Facebook Live Video according to NBC Miami reports: Raderius Glenn Collins, 18, and Marcus Terrell Parker, 27, were arrested on multiple charges including burglary, grand theft, criminal mischief and dealing in stolen property in the crime spree that brought them more than $500,000 worth of jewelry, police said. Police say Collins, Parker and a third man burglarized a house in the 13200 block of Southwest 63rd Court and a home on the 6300 block of 107th Street in Pinecrest. The burglars stole a safe from one home with jewelry valued at more than $500,000 and jewelry valued at more than $10,000 from another. Authorities are looking for a third suspect who was seen on a Facebook video with a bag full of $100 bills bragging about their illegal earnings, saying on camera “We got a safe.” One of the men arrested told police that he and the other two subjects sold the stolen jewelry to a shop and received $1,300 each in return. 14-Year-Old Boy Arrested For Hate Crime After Beating Up Muslim Man NYC Police have arrested a 14-year-old in connection with June 1st beating of a Muslim man who had just left his mosque on Jamaica Avenue in Queens according to ABC 7 NY reports: The victim, who had been riding a bicycle, suffered multiple broken bones and was unable to speak or open his eyes. Three teenagers took part in the beating, and two of them remain on the loose. The name of the 14-year-old now in custody is not being released because of his age. The New York Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) called on the NYPD to investigate the attack as a possible hate crime.
