After President Obama officially addressed the issue to the media earlier this week and the US swore support in rescuing the young ladies earlier today , Mrs. Obama made a simple, yet powerful statement with the above picture, accompanied by the following tweet: Via ABCnews : First lady Michelle Obama joined the #BringBackOurGirls movement on Twitter Tuesday afternoon. The tweet is signed “-mo,” which means the first lady herself penned the message. The hashtag has become a rallying cry for women and men fighting for the release of nearly 300 girls captured by Boko Haram, a terrorist organization in Nigeria. In the 23 days since the girls first went missing, the hashtag has been shared over a million times. Many prominent pols–from Hillary Clinton to Michelle Bachman–have joined the movement. Earlier this week President Obama called the girls’ abduction “heartbreaking” and “outrageous.” What a powerful public statement. “All I wanna say is that, they don’t really care about us..” Report: Low-Income Black Students Three Times More Likely To Receive Inexperienced Teachers via Clutch Magazine The Center for American Progress issued a report on Friday that confirms that low-income students of color not only have less experienced teachers, but also less effective teachers. The study analyzes teacher evaluation scores in low-income and affluent districts in both Massachusetts and Louisiana. In Louisiana, a student within a school at the highest-poverty quartile is almost three times as likely to be taught by a teacher rated “ineffective” as a student in a school in the lowest-poverty quartile. And in Massachusetts, students in high-poverty schools are three times as likely to be taught by a teacher rated “unsatisfactory” than students in low-poverty schools. A second report indicates the root cause is an unequal distribution of teachers. While No Child Left Behind previously asked states to devise plans to ensure equitable distribution, subsequent waivers gave states the flexibility to deviate from those requirements. “Poor students and students of color are less likely to get well-qualified or high-achieving teachers than students from higher-income families or students who are white,” says the report. Oakland Mother Grieves After Two Teenage Sons Murdered 19 Days Apart This is sad and crazy, but unfortunately the harsh reality if we do not get this gun violence under control , pronto. Via NBC Bay Area: An Oakland mother has no more children left after gun violence claimed both of her two sons’ lives. Her youngest son, who was only 13 years old, was gunned down on New Year’s Eve on 104th avenue near Walnut Street. Her oldest son was shot and killed Sunday, near the intersection of 100th Avenue and Longfellow, 19 days after her 13-year-old was killed. “Hopefully the community people will come forward,” Dinyal New said, “because how can a mother experience two losses within 19 days? Both her kids. It’s horrible.” New said no words can describe her grief. She is mourning the death of her 19-year-old son Lamar Broussard less than a week after burying her youngest son, Lee Weathersby. He was only 13 years old. “Somebody’s failing these kids,” New said. “They feel like it’s OK to murder these kids. They have no remorse or understanding afterwards.” Harris’s mother Tameka Rothchild is in shock. “I love my son, and unfortunately people out here are heartless,” Rothchild said. “They don’t have no morals. They don’t have no type of values. They don’t care about a human being.” New said she is begging for someone to come forward with information about the killings. She also had another request. “What I do ask is for no retaliation at all,” New said. “I want to see this in the courts. I want retaliation in the court system. Please, no retaliation.” Oakland police said they have not identified any suspects in the shooting deaths. SMH.
33-Year-Old Tutor For Wealthy Families Makes $1,250 An Hour Dayyyyuuuuummmmmmm, this tutor makes $400K a year AND gets free housing, cars/drivers, meals and free travel! According to NBC News: He looks and sounds like many other young, highly qualified teachers. Nathaniel Hannan, a 33-year-old Indiana native, went to Notre Dame and got his masters at Oxford in philosophy and geology before becoming a high school teacher in Washington, D.C. He loves to teach and has a gift for communicating. But today, instead of working for a school, Hannan tutors the children of wealthy families. And he makes up to $1,250 an hour. “It’s different clients, but the same business,” he said. Actually, it’s a different business entirely—and it’s growing rapidly. While much of the American education system is struggling with tight budgets, overcrowded classrooms and low teacher pay, the tutor economy is booming. More of the world’s millionaires and billionaires are seeking at-home teachers to give their children a leg up in the increasingly competitive and important education race. And, as the number of rich people grows around the world—and as more of them split their time between multiple homes in different countries—they are creating their own mobile, ultra-private schools in their homes. Tutors International, a London-based tutor agency that hires and places many tutors in the U.S., said its business this year will nearly double over last year. The typical salary for a full-time tutor today has jumped to between $70,000 and $120,000 depending on the requirements. But Tutors International has placed one tutor who is making $400,000 a year and another who was paid $80,000 for just 16 weeks of work. Along with their pay, most tutors also usually get free housing, cars or drivers, paid travel and meals, and occasionally even a private chef and personal assistant. “For these families, they look at the costs of just fueling their jet or buying a new sports car, and spending $100,000 or more for a tutor is not a great expense,” said Adam Caller, the founder of Tutors International and a former tutor and teacher himself. “They know education is important.” Caller said his clients fall into three basic categories. First, there are rich families who want to supplement their children’s schooling with added subjects and help them with homework. Second, there are families who have children with special needs, where home schooling is more effective. Many of his clients, however, fall into the third category: rich families that travel between multiple homes around the world and don’t want to be tied to one location because of their children’s school. Some of these families are also so rich and famous that their children would be mobbed at a regular school. “They may be based in New York, have a boat in France and a house in Mexico and in South Africa, and they want to use them all,” Caller said. “With home schooling and a tutor, they can travel wherever they want and still get to be with their children.” Caller said the tutor he placed for $400,000 a year was for a rich family on the West Coast. The student was having trouble with school and with substance abuse, so the tutor had to home-school the student and coach the student and his family through rehab. Since Tutors International employs its tutors—rather than placing them for employment by the families—the company monitors performance and receives constant feedback and performance reports from both the families and the tutors. “We don’t take our fee and walk away,” Knight said. “We have an interest in everybody being happy along the way.” Wow. According to The NY Daily News The owner of a chain of prestigious Manhattan music schools charged with molesting a 9-year-old girl sexually assaulted at least three other victims, prosecutors said Tuesday. Ilya Lehman, 70, is also the music instructor at The Early Ear chain of schools on the upper West Side and upper East Side. He was arrested in August for allegedly molesting the student between Sept. 2011 and April 2013. During a court hearing in Manhattan Supreme Court, prosecutors said they had identified at least three other victims. “We have located two other of the defendant’s victims,” Assistant District Attorney Nahal Batmanghelidj said. “Based on our investigation, we believe there’s a possible third individual,” she added. The prosecutor, who did not reveal details on the alleged incidents or the additional victims, added “it appears” there are statute of limitations issues with the cases. Prosecutors suggested they would try to introduce the alleged assaults at trial if they are not able to charge Lehman with additional crimes. Lehman vehemently denies the sexual attack on the child he was arrested for allegedly groping, and just learned of the new allegations today, his attorney said. “This is the first time the District Attorney’s office has given any indication that it believes there may be other alleged victims,” said his lawyer, Raymond Granger. “We’ll have to wait and see whether and if so how the DA’s office proceeds with respect to those allegations.” Lehman, who is free on $300,000 bail on the condition that he refrain from teaching children, was indicted for continued sexual conduct against a child and sexual abuse in the first degree. He pleaded not guilty to those charges when he was arraigned in August. Judge Jill Konviser adjourned the case to Nov. 4. They let him go free on bail! The justice system is truly broken. Sources connected to Kris and Bruce tell TMZ … Kris — who is the moving force in the separation — has NOT contacted a divorce lawyer. We’re told as of now she’s fine with the status quo. Fact is … they’ve been separated for awhile, and Kris and Bruce don’t want to screw up their reality show … which is raking in $40 mil for the family. The couple issued a statement saying, “We are living separately and we are much happier this way.” Sources connected with the family tell TMZ … Bruce has been living in Malibu full-time and spending a lot of time with his sons Brody and Brandon. Kris is firmly planted in Calabasas with her daughters. We’re told Bruce has privately told his sons living away from Kris was just the way the relationship evolved. In their statement, they say they will continue to have love and respect for each other. It’s unclear how the split will impact their reality show.
