Hallmark “Mahogany” Father’s Day Card For Mother’s Sparks Debate Yesterday, we came across a brief discussion that was sparked surrounding a Father’s Day card (pictured above) created by popular Hallmark-affiliated brand “Mahogany,” which was developed to appeal specifically to African-American consumers. The outside of the card, which reads “For My Mom On Father’s Day,” left a few folks feeling that Mahogany’s decision to sell this card was a blatant attempt to capitalize on the negative single mother/absent father stereotype that society often associates with the African-American community. On the other side of the debate were those who felt that the card was a genuinely heartfelt gesture that gave those in the community without fathers present in their lives for whatever reason the chance to let their mothers know that they too are appreciated on this day for stepping into the role of both parents as best they could. While many single parents do in fact step into the role of the missing parent everyday, many debating the topic also felt that women can’t be fathers or teach young boys how to be men and fathers can’t be mothers or teach young girls how to be women, so fathers should be able to be celebrated on their holiday without having to share the day with single mothers and vice versa. An additional point was made that Hallmark also sells similar cards that are not marketed towards African-Americans for people without both parents. So what say you, Bossip fam? Is Mahogany trying to make money by reinforcing a negative stereotype that undermines black fathers and families? Sign might as well say: “No Chief Keefs Allowed!” Jersey Shore Mayor Proposes Ban On Sagging Pants Via ABCNews It’s the Jersey Shore, no doubt, but Wildwood’s mayor doesn’t want the stereotypes that come along with it. And saggy pants, he said, do nothing but perpetuate the negative stereotypes that come with a summer “down the shore.” That’s why the mayor of Wildwood, N.J., is leading the charge on a saggy pants ban on the beach town’s boardwalk. “Their whole rear ends are sticking out,” Mayor Ernie Troiano Jr. said. “These kids have no respect for anyone including themselves.” There was no one event that led to the proposed ban, he said, rather a long line of complaints from people who were tired of seeing people’s underwear hanging out of their pants. “People kept asking what I was going to do about it,” he said. Locals are “extremely offended” by the saggy pants. “We welcome everyone here, we don’t discriminate against anyone,” he said. “But what about my rights not to have to see your rear end?” The vote on the ban, which the mayor said he is “99.9 percent sure” will succeed, takes place June 12. It will take 20 days to become law. So how will the local Po-9 enforce the new law if it passes? On the 21st day, he said, police will begin “politely asking” people to hike up their pants. “It’s not a hit squad,” he said. “There’s no Gestapo running up and down the boardwalk looking for offenders.” If they don’t comply, Troiano said, they will be asked to leave the boardwalk. If they become belligerent they will get a ticket. That’s it?? We’re not against encouraging these young dirt-ball ninjas to get their lives together, but you’re going to have to do better than a ticket and a stern warning to make ‘em pull up their True Religions. Doctor Suggests Patient Orally Satisfy Husband To Treat Gag Reflex A California physician has been reprimanded by the medical board and continues to face backlash after one of his female patients revealed that the doctor suggested that doming her husband off twice a week would help treat her gag reflex. via Huffington Post J. Peter Zegarra, a California doctor, has been publicaly reprimanded by the state’s medical board after he told a patient to practice oral sex on her husband. The patient had expressed concerns her gag reflex would interfere with an upper-gastrointestinal endoscopy, according to CBS affiliate KOVR. The patient, an unidentified woman, complained that the Sacramento-based colo-rectal surgeon told her to practice oral sex on her husband “twice a week” prior to the procedure as a way of allaying the reflex. According to CBS Sacramento, Zegarra made the suggestion in front of the woman and her husband “several years ago.” The station also noted Zegarra had tried twice to expunge the complaint from the public record. Zegarra’s name appears on a summary of administrative actions taken by the California board of medicine in 2007. CBS Sacramento reports that a spokesperson for the state board of medicine called the doctor’s suggestion inappropriate, even if it was meant as a joke.
