3OH!3 Re-Create The Internet On The Internet In New ‘Double Vision’ Video

Clip is complete with banner ads and an arrow scrolling down the page that is the video. By James Montgomery 3OH!3 in their video for “Double Vision” Photo: Photo Finish Records When we last saw the guys in 3OH!3 , they were going green-screen crazy in the video for “My First Kiss,” a clip that took their patented brand of anti-subtlety to newfound heights. Simply put, it was a video all about kissing. A lot of kissing. In their new video for “Double Vision,” they’ve ditched the digital effects and gone DIY, with a clip that re-creates the sprawling ephemera of the Internet with a bunch of man-made tricks. In a lot of ways, it recalls the work of Michel Gondry, who eschews big-budget effects in favor of in-camera trickery and rough-hewn, eternally moving set pieces. And really, did you ever think you’d see a time when 3OH!3 would be compared to a noted French auteur? Working with director Evan Bernard (he of the Beastie Boys lyrical shout-out and eye-catching clips like Green Day’s “Minority” and the Ben Folds Five’s “Army”), 3OH!3 have done something pretty great with “Double Vision,” and it’s no stretch to say it’s their shining moment, video-wise at least. Because aside from the concept itself — let’s remake the Internet using only stuff found at most Home Depots — there are at least a dozen moments in the clip that are genuinely clever, too: subtle touches like the arrow icon that continually scrolls the screen downward (it’s controlled by a long while pipe held off-camera) and the rainbow-colored loading wheel Sean Foreman picks up and spins (while he freezes in place). There’s the way the “live” footage is presented — as video clips that only spring to life when they’re “clicked” on — and a bit that pays homage to the now-famous “Daft Hands” YouTube clip (and I’m pretty sure they got the “Daft Bodies” girls to do it). And while, sure, the inclusion of those “Plenty of Fish” ads — last seen in Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” video — is rather cloying, they’re at least done cleverly. And really, when you think about it, aren’t banner ads supposed to be annoying? (For maximum annoyance, Bernard should’ve cast some wenches to re-create those “Evony” ads.) So “Double Vision” works on many levels — it’s sort of “Inception-y” in that regard (the Internet … on the Internet) — and it’s because of all that wink-winkery that it works as well as it does. It’s a great concept, greatly executed. And it only proves that perhaps the guys in 3OH!3 would do well to show a little restraint now and then … a video doesn’t need hyper-color explosions and kissing co-eds to be successful. Though, for that to happen, they’d probably have to release a song called “Subtlety.” Who knows, maybe they’ll do it on their next record. What do you think of 3OH!3’s “Double Vision” video? 3OH!3 Talk ‘Rad’ New Album, Streets Of Gold

‘We were inspired by gold,’ Nathaniel Motte jokes to MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias 3OH!3 Photo: MTV News For 3OH!3’s album Streets of Gold, out Tuesday (June 29), they decided to seek inspiration from things they know a lot about — like partying. Would you expect anything else from the “Don’t Trust Me” singers? ” Want did really well and kept doing better, so we didn’t really have time [to make a follow-up],” Nathaniel Motte told MTV News of their breakthrough album. “We finally carved out some time to make this album, which is rad. We were inspired by gold.” The duo also wrote music about their new rock-star lifestyle. “I think there’s a few completely different things on the album,” Sean Foreman said. “Some of it’s really fun and just about kind of our life on the road and parties. There’s some heavier songs [too].” But don’t think the party-song dudes have left behind the sounds that made them household names. If you hear any new vibes on the album, they say it’s just because they have grown as musicians. “While we were touring, we managed to work in the studio, and I think we’ve learned so much as songwriters and as producers making music and making tracks,” Motte said, adding that this album is a “more developed [and] more defined album. It’s inspired by a lot of stuff.” Some of that stuff includes first love, as evidenced on their Ke$ha-fied single “First Kiss,” and, well, house parties. “I think we stretched. As much diversity as there was on the last album, we just pulled that and stretched it further,” Foreman said. “You get stuff on either end of the spectrum — like ‘House Party’ is crazy and has the craziest production, and it’s just a fun anthem that you’d want to sing with all your friends. And then there’s stuff on the other end of it, where it might be a little bit more singing and stuff like that.” Are you looking forward to 3OH!3’s latest album? Let us know in the comments!

3OH!3 Risked Mono, Braved Chatroulette For ‘My First Kiss’ Video

The duo were ‘really dedicated to making this video,’ Sean Foreman says of on-set kissing. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Saimon Kos 3OH!3’s Nathaniel Motte and Sean Foreman Photo: Cristina Ramos/ MTV News Earlier this week, we got the guys in 3Oh!3 to explain the basic premise behind their tonsil-hockey-heavy video for “My First Kiss.” It sounded like a pretty sweet deal — just randomly smooching a bunch of very pretty strangers — but, as is the case with a lot of good things, there was a downside. “Honestly, there is a lot of kissing, there’s a lot of lips. I think we all have mono after today, so we’re all going to get tested. We probably should’ve been tested before,” 3OH!3’s Sean Foreman told MTV News on the set of the “Kiss” video. “It’s been really fun. We’re actually dealing with a lot of visual concepts and making a video that attacks the senses in all ways. Kind of like a kiss. … See? [I] tied it all in right there.” Although filming the video was taxing, Foreman and his partner in crime, Nat Motte, actually had a blast making it: screwing around with the green screen (plenty of riffs on the “We’re in … Delaware” routine from “Wayne’s World”) and trying very hard to make all the kissing as real as possible, even if that meant burning the midnight oil. “We’re working as hard as we can. Who knows how long it will go?” Foreman laughed. “We’re really dedicated to making this video.” That dedication extended to the casting process. As Foreman put it, the band “flew in some of the best lips in the world” for the video, but that was only after a rather exhaustive pre-production process, one that could have resulted in a very different kind of clip. “We went on the Chatroulette and found the best lips,” Foreman joked. “We didn’t find a lot of lips at first, but eventually. … The video almost ended up being completely different, but I’m glad we finally got the lips.” “We found a lot of something else,” Motte added. “We probably only could’ve run [that version of the] video online.” Are you looking forward to seeing how the “My First Kiss” video turned out? 3OH!3 Say They Will ‘Show Up’ To Katy Perry And Russell Brand’s Wedding

‘I haven’t been home yet, so it’s probably in the mailbox,’ Sean Foreman says about the whereabouts of his invitation. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias 3OH!3 Photo: MTV News While 3OH!3 are busy working on their new album and gearing up for a tour with Cobra Starship this summer, they are also looking forward to possibly attending pal Katy Perry’s wedding to Russell Brand . It seems that she promised her “Starstrukk” collaborators they would receive an invite to the big day. “I haven’t been home yet, so it’s probably in the mailbox,” Sean Foreman joked. “We travel a lot.” But he does have a plan in place in case his invitation gets lost in the mail. “I’ll just show up,” he teased. “We’ll be fine.” Bandmate Nathaniel Motte added that the last time he saw Perry she made it pretty clear that she had every intention of saving a space for them at the wedding whenever it should happen to go down. “She said it was in the mail. You know the postal service these days!” he said. “Plus I saw her the other day and she was like, ‘I sent it.’ Her sister was there and she [winked] at her sister. Long story short … [we’ll be there].” Regardless of the whereabouts of their invitations, 3OH!3 insist that “bridezilla” Brand has their seal of approval. “We did meet him — super nice, really, really nice,” Foreman said. Plus, the guys admit that Brand does seem to have a pretty great sense of humor as evidenced by his next film, “Get Him To the Greek.” “His movie seems pretty funny,” Motte continued, adding that both halves of the couple are busy with the wedding and other projects. “She’s got a lot of stuff she’s working on.” Are you excited about Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s wedding? Ke$ha Gets Into Battle Of The Sexes With 3Oh!3 For ‘Blah Blah Blah’ Video

‘Dudes are way more annoying,’ says Ke$ha, explaining her bratty song’s message. By Jocelyn Vena Ke$ha on the set of her video “Blah Blah Blah” Photo: RCA Ke$ha makes no apologies for her brash personality, which she’s managed to channel into catchy, raucous party songs . And with her first single “Tik Tok” still pumping loudly from stereos, it’s time for Ke$ha to assault radio airwaves with her new single, “Blah Blah Blah,” off her chart-topping debut album, Animal. The up-and-comer recently shot a video for the song along with the boys of 3Oh!3 , who appear on the bratty club anthem. “The whole concept of the video was a bunch of douche-y guys macking on me as usual, and me making them eat their toupees or other various items,” she told MTV News at the shoot. “At one point, I get to be strapped to this harness and bouncing around everywhere, and it was really cool.” In the song, Ke$ha ridicules a would-be suitor for “ta-ta-talking that bla-bla-bla” when all she really wants is to have sex with him. Ke$ha explained that the dance tune originated from a discussion she had in the studio on the politics of female-male relationships. “The song came about when the people that wrote it — me, Benny Blanco, Neon Hitch and [3Oh!3’s] Sean Foreman — all got in a room, and they were talking about how chicks talk too much,” she said. “And me and Neon were like, ‘No, no, no, guys talk too much,’ ” she continued. “So, we had this war of who were more obnoxious, chicks or dudes. And the song kind of came around from that conversation. I think I make a pretty fair point both in this video and in the song, that dudes are way more annoying.” Related Artists Ke$ha
