Nickelback Roar Back To Basics On Here And Now

Band’s new album isn’t a departure, because it doesn’t have to be. By James Montgomery Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger Photo: Getty Images When Nickelback set out to record their brand-new album Here and Now, which hit stores Monday (November 21), they decided not to stray far from the mantra that has made them one of the decade’s biggest-selling acts: Namely, keep it simple, stupid. “If we had a ‘vision,’ it was pretty much ‘Record 11 songs, try to make sure they don’t sound like any of the other 11 songs, and make ’em good, ‘” frontman Chad Kroeger said. “That was about it.” If Kroeger sounds like he’s joking, he assures you, he’s not. After all, for more than 15 years now, Nickelback have done one thing — write and record the kinds of songs that sound great played very loudly, be it on the radio, in the parking lot or inside venues that house professional sports franchises — and have done it exceptionally well, to the tune of some 50 million albums sold worldwide. And Here and Now seems destined to follow in those footsteps, both sonically (have you heard “Bottoms Up” ?) and commercially. Then again, the latter doesn’t seem to matter all that much to Kroeger and company, which may very well be the secret to their success. “Did you read the bio [for the new album]? Oh my God, it’s a thrill ride. It’s like my mom wrote it. She’s like, ‘They’ve sold this many records worldwide, they’ve won all of these accolades, the band has set these records,’ and you just go down it, and there’s almost nothing about the new album,” Kroeger laughed. “The adjectives are just like, ‘Wow, this dude got a thesaurus for Christmas for sure, and he just blew the dust off it.’ “You know what? I think [sales] mean more to my mom. My mom is just pumped when this stuff comes out,” he continued. “But I think sometimes, we’ll be sitting at dinner, and we’ll look at each other, if it’s just the four of us, those are those little secret private moments where we’ll look at each other and be like, ‘That was pretty cool.’ Or, you know, ‘Pass the butter.’ ” And so, on Here and Now, Nickelback return with much of the same that has led them to such lofty heights. They’ll make no bones about it, either. It will probably sell a bazillion copies and launch singles onto modern rock radio for the foreseeable future. And it will most definitely be coming to an arena near you very soon. And all those things would be near-certainties even if the band decided to go with their original title for the album, which, truth be told, would’ve been pretty awesome, really. “It’s called Here and Now because it just represents a snapshot in time, a snapshot of who we were when we made it,” Kroeger explained. “And of all the names we had, it was better than Wizard Beating. ” Related Artists Nickelback

Frank Ocean Cancels NYC Show After Promising New Orleans Debut

MTV’s RapFix hit Odd Future crooner’s NOLA concert a day before he canceled NYC date via Tumblr. By Nadeska Alexis Frank Ocean Photo: MTV News Frank Ocean , Odd Future’s much-buzzed about crooner, seemed to be just getting started when he suddenly canceled his scheduled Sunday show in New York just one hour before his set time citing illness. The jaunt was interrupted only a day after Ocean played the first date on a mini-tour that kicked off in his native New Orleans on Saturday. Back in February, Ocean independently released Nostalgia, Ultra via Tumblr, and since then the popular mixtape has been pegged for re-release on Def Jam, thanks to the hit singles “Swim Good” and “Novacane,” which both made their way from the Internet to the radio. In early October, the 24-year-old singer/songwriter announced plans to embark on an intimate six-city tour in support of the mixtape. The Odd Future member kicked off his short-lived run with a solo show in his hometown of New Orleans on Saturday night, but after performing sound check at the Bowery Ballroom the following day, he canceled the show. While some fans were already lined up outside of the venue, Ocean retreated to Tumblr to pen a new post titled “New York Is Cancelled.” “[O]r should i say postponed,” Ocean wrote. “I played last night in new orleans, on antibiotics and some other meds. got sick a cpl days before i left los angeles. woke up this morning in new york and could barely speak. called a doctor to my hotel, got a steroid shot. took some more meds. laid in bed all day till soundcheck, got to the venue and could barely sing any of my songs. im really sorry yall. i been workin on this show for months, did everything i could to make it special for yall. i’ll be back soon as i’m healthy. thats my word. tickets will be valid for that, or you guys can get refunded. damn this sh–.” During his New Orleans show on Saturday night, it took the shy performer some time to warm up to the crowd. He delivered several tracks from Nostalgia, Ultra, including “Lovecrimes,” “Swim Good” and “Novacane,” while slipping in some material from his upcoming album. Ocean also performed the hooks from his Watch the Throne features “No Church in the Wild” and “Made in America.” Before the cancellation, the tour was expected to stop in the Netherlands, London and Paris before concluding in Los Angeles on November 15; no word yet on whether those shows will go on. Paramore Premiere New Song, ‘Hello Cold World’

New track is second to be released through band’s ‘Singles Club.’ By James Montgomery Paramore’s Hayley Williams Photo: MTV Last month, Paramore made good on their promise to release new music in 2011 when they officially launched their “Singles Club,” a delightfully old-school (and direct) way of getting a trio of singles to their fans. They’ve since premiered the first of those tracks, “Renegade,” and on Monday (November 7), they unveiled the second, “Hello Cold World,” a bounding, poppy tune that features frontwoman Hayley Williams urging the listener to action, singing, “You can’t just stay down on your knees, the revolution is outside/ You want to make a difference, get out and go get it.” It is very much a rallying cry and a definite departure from the darker territory they’ve been exploring on the other new songs they’ve released since the departure of Josh and Zac Farro late last year, in particular “Monster,” their snarling single from the “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” soundtrack. The third and final installment of the Singles Club, “In the Mourning,” is set to be released in December and will have to tide fans over for the foreseeable future. As Paramore revealed when they announced the Club, they’ll be spending 2012 working on the follow-up to their Brand New Eyes album. “We really wanted to do something special for all of you … to thank you for making 2011 so amazing and sticking with us as we go into 2012 and start working on a new album,” they wrote. “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for believing in us.” What do you think of the latest Paramore song? Florence And The Machine Return With ‘What The Water Gave Me’

Florence Welch gives fans first taste of what they can expect on her new disc, due in November. By James Montgomery Florence Welch Photo: Shirlaine Forrest/WireImage Florence and the Machine conquered audiences on both sides of the Atlantic with their dynamic, dramatic debut, 2009’s Lungs. Ever since, fans have been clamoring for the follow-up. Now, it’s finally on the horizon. On Tuesday (August 23), Florence Welch announced on her official site that her sophomore album would hit stores on November 7 in the U.K., and according to her rep, it’ll be out sometime the same month here in the U.S. She also gave us all a sneak peek of what we can expect on the disc with a soaring, chiming, epically massive new track called “What the Water Gave Me,” which is imbued with a gospel choir and Welch’s epic pipes, and seems destined to rule the festival circuit for the foreseeable future. The still-untitled album is produced by Paul Epworth and was recorded at London’s iconic Abbey Road studios. Welch had been premiering a handful of tracks from the record during live shows — the standout “Strangeness and Charm” will reportedly also make the cut — and earlier this summer, before her performance at Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee, she sat down with MTV News to discuss the process behind making the new album, calling it a more cohesive effort than her debut. “I wrote so much of my first album at different times and places — some songs when I was 18, some when I was 21 — so there are so many pieces and styles on it,” she said. “And that’s one of the things I love about it, but for my new record, I wanted to do things differently. It’s why I worked with one producer in one studio. I want to tie all those things together … in one piece, if possible.” Welch also said that the album draws inspiration from ethereal sources too, including one song on the album she wrote after a ghostly visitation. “There’s a song on it that’s inspired by a visit [from] my dead grandmother — like, I had a really, really vivid dream about her and, um, she was giving me advice in this dream,” she said. “And it was really emotional, and I woke up crying. And there’s one song that’s inspired by that experience.” Related Artists Florence + the Machine

Aretha Franklin’s Mystery Illness Was Not Pancreatic Cancer

We still don’t know what was wrong with her, but the Queen of Soul herself says it definitely wasn’t pancreatic cancer. Today was clearly “do interviews day” for Ms. Franklin. And what she told Access Hollywood about her illness might be more interesting than the fact that she thinks Halle Berry looks like her . “Well, there was just so many wild things out there and just so many things being said that weren’t true,” Aretha told Shaun in a phone interview on Thursday. “I just felt I needed to address it a little.” Aretha, 68, admits there was indeed a health scare, but she isn’t ready to divulge specifics just yet. “I went through a number of procedures before I knew what was wrong,” Aretha told Shaun. “I know that you revealed to Jet magazine that you initially sought treatment because of a pain in your side,” Shaun replied. “Did the pain get so severe that you said, ‘Hey, there’s got to be something wrong here?’” “Yeah, the pain was so hard it almost brought me to my knees,” Aretha revealed. “I was in Birmingham and then Boston and after that concert the same pain hit me again. “I really just began to not feel good and I said, ‘Oh, no this is it, I can’t do any more concerts till I know what the problem is,’” she added. The “Freedom” chanteuse shot down rampart reports that she had been stricken with pancreatic cancer, saying, “I don’t know where ‘pancreatic cancer’ came from. “I was sitting there reading the newspaper and it was saying someone in my family said that,” Aretha continued. “No one in my family ever said that to anybody.” The beloved artist received an overwhelming outpouring of “Respect” from high-profile well-wishers during her recovery – including the Commander In Chief. “I got a wonderful and beautiful letter from the President,” Aretha told Shaun. “And nobody does it like him!” Access is thrilled to report that Aretha is expected to continuing blessing us with her phenomenal voice and fashion-forward hats for the foreseeable future. “So, it’s safe to say to your fans that we will be seeing Aretha Franklin for many years to come, right?” Shaun asked Aretha. “That’s what my doctor said,” Aretha replied. “He said, ‘The surgery that you just had is going to add 15 to 20 more years to your life.’” And y’all said we were mean when we tweeted that she probably had gastric bypass or a breast reduction.
