Bare Tails and Fairy Tales: Gemma Arterton to Play Gretel

To cast the female lead in Hansel and Gretel , an upcoming “dark action movie” based on the already pretty dark children’s story of kidnapping and cannibalism, the producers sought out the hottest babes from all over the world, all of whom had done great nudity. From France, they looked at Eva Green , who stripped in The Dreamers . From Sweden came Noomi Rapace, who nakedly lezzed out in both The Girl Who Played with Fire and Dasiy Diamond . From Germany there was Diane Kruger , whose T&A made her the perfect Helen of Troy . And from the UK they looked at Gemma Arterton , who finally got the role, maybe because they saw her naked partertons in The Disappearance of Alice Creed . Based on the way they’ve been casting this movie Mr. Skin can only assume that the people behind Hansel and Gretel are looking to make some kind of skin-filled fantasy along the lines of Cinderella with blond B-movie babe Cheryl “Rainbeaux” Smith or Fairy Tales with naked scream queen Linnea Quigley . But if that’s the case, why not cast Eva, Noomi, and Diane as the three little pigs? Then Gemma can huff and puff and blow their clothes off. Can you Hansel that?

Stephen Dorff Says Jack Nicholson Will Love ‘Somewhere’

‘I think he’ll identify with it so much,’ Dorff suggests about his friend and one-time co-star’s opinion of the acclaimed new film. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Stephen Dorff Photo: MTV News Ever since they shared screen time in the 1997 heist flick “Blood and Wine,” actors Stephen Dorff and Jack Nicholson have remained close friends. Their relationship may not necessarily be “bromance” territory, but it’s close enough that Dorff has shared his career ups and downs with the Oscar winner, and asked for his advice over the years. When MTV News caught up with Dorff recently to talk about his critically acclaimed new film “Somewhere” — a role that he called the most challenging of his career — he said he thinks the flick is one Nicholson will really enjoy. “I think he’s going to really love this movie because to me it’s a film that isn’t made anymore today,” Dorff explained. “It’s such a character piece and I think he’ll identify with it so much. Dorff revealed that he already got a big thumbs-up from Nicholson after “Somewhere” took home the top prize at Italy’s Venice Film Festival in September. “After we won Venice I remember telling him how excited I was,” he recalled. “And he’s like, ‘Way to go, Dorff!’ ” We then brought up the fact that Nicholson has taken several actors under his wing over the years — pointing out to Dorff that the Hollywood legend had taken an interest in “Mad Men” actress January Jones when she was first starting out. “Well, he takes an interest in a lot of women, let’s be honest,” Dorff responded with a chuckle. “He definitely took me under his wing. I think it’s rare for Jack to take a young guy under his wing — he’s not hanging out with too many guys. “He did do that with Sean Penn and he’s definitely given me great advice over the years,” Dorff added. “I always feel like I have him as a friend and he’ll show up if he can. And he’s always been my favorite actor, so for me, he’s a friend, and it’s nice to get a little star struck still. It keeps me remembering who I am and where I am, and Jack’s still somebody that makes me a little nervous.” If Dorff has his way, he and his buddy Jack will take their friendship to the big screen via a comedy the younger actor is hoping to make with Adam Sandler’s production company. “It’s a very funny comedy idea for me and him set in the South of France,” Dorff told the UK’s Independent newspaper last month. “We’re not in script form yet but I wrote the treatment and they’ve already bought it so as soon as I get a break from working, I’ll turn that into a script and I’ll go and tell Jack. … And I’ll get Sony to give him his $15 million and then we’ll go and make the movie — because he likes money.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Somewhere.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Phoenix Recall Meeting ‘Jersey Shore’ Star Snooki

‘We’ve become friends!’ guitarist Laurent Brancowitz laughs to MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias Phoenix Photo: MTV News Back in January, worlds collided when “Jersey Shore” star Snooki met Phoenix , the world’s hugest rock band (from France). Their chance encounter occurred on the red carpet of the Grammys, where the Snookster was serving as MTV News’ special correspondent and Phoenix were, uh, walking (they’d go on to win Best Alternative Album too). The end result was 83 seconds of lost-in-translation awkwardness, an “interview” that was amazing for several reasons, most of them having to do with the fact that neither party had any idea who the other was (though we also like the part where Snooki tells Phoenix guitarist Laurent Brancowitz that he looks like “the vampire Edward”). Not surprisingly, the video of their meeting became an Internet sensation, to the point where, for the remainder of 2010, Phoenix were forced to answer questions about Snooki everywhere they went (Snooki, on the other hand, has since moved on to bigger and better things ). So, naturally, when MTV News caught up with the fabulous French foursome over the weekend at KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas, we decided to continue the trend. But rather than just ask them about their run-in with Snooki, we also wondered if their relationship had grown any. “We’ve become friends!” Brancowitz laughed. “No. People talk about it a lot, but we always manage to let it be very blurry. We have absolutely no idea of the details. It was a very nice encounter.” We suspect that was just him being polite, but we’ll let you be the judge. Above is our latest interview with Phoenix plus the original clip of them meeting Snooki for the first — and, we’ll assume, last — time. Watch it and try very hard not to cringe yourself to death. France braces itself for Eric Cantona cashpoint revolution

France is bracing for Eric Cantona's bank-run revolution tomorrow Tuesday 7 December, with the government criticising his call for the public to stage a mass cash-withdrawal and the left questioning whether it would have much effect. When the ex Manchester United footballer gave a video interview in October calling on his fellow citizens to stage a world-wide cashpoint revolution against the financial system on December 7, the number of Cantona's lucky shirt.Asked about street demonstrations to protest against government austerity measures, Cantona said: “We have to change the way we do things nowadays. Talking of revolution, I don't mean we are going to pick up guns and go out to kill people. Revolution is very simple to do nowadays,” he told the French paper Presse Ocean.”What's the system? The system revolves around banks. The system is built on the banks' power. So it can be destroyed by the banks. Instead of having three million people going out to demonstrate with a placard, those three million people go to their bank branch, they withdraw their money and the banks crumble.” He directed people: “You go to your bank in your village and you withdraw your money.” But as tens of thousands of people signed up to the online campaigns led by a Franco-Belgian anti-bank protest group, the French government warned against “Eric Le Rouge” sticking his nose into economics.Francois Baroin, the budget minister, said: “It would be funny if it wasn't so tragic.” FCantona's call to arms was “grotesque” and “not serious”. inance minister Christine Lagarde said witheringly: “There are those who play football magnificently, I wouldn't dare to try. I think it's best for everyone to stick to their own speciality.” The director general of BNP Paribas deemed Cantona's appeal “ill-founded”. added by: sbacker

New York Times/Wikileaks: Afghanistan Corruption Is ‘Overwhelming’

WASHINGTON — From hundreds of diplomatic cables, Afghanistan emerges as a looking-glass land where bribery, extortion and embezzlement are the norm and the honest man is a distinct outlier. Describing the likely lineup of Afghanistan’s new cabinet last January, the American Embassy noted that the agriculture minister, Asif Rahimi, “appears to be the only minister that was confirmed about whom no allegations of bribery exist.” One Afghan official helpfully explained to diplomats the “four stages” at which his colleagues skimmed money from American development projects: “When contractors bid on a project, at application for building permits, during construction, and at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.” In a seeming victory against corruption, Abdul Ahad Sahibi, the mayor of Kabul, received a four-year prison sentence last year for “massive embezzlement.” But a cable from the embassy told a very different story: Mr. Sahibi was a victim of “kangaroo court justice,” it said, in what appeared to be retribution for his attempt to halt a corrupt land-distribution scheme. It is hardly news that predatory corruption, fueled by a booming illicit narcotics industry, is rampant at every level of Afghan society. Transparency International, an advocacy organization that tracks government corruption around the globe, ranks Afghanistan as the world’s third most corrupt country, behind Somalia and Myanmar. But the collection of confidential diplomatic cables obtained by WikiLeaks and made available to a number of publications, offers a fresh sense of its pervasive nature, its overwhelming scale, and the dispiriting challenge it poses to American officials who have made shoring up support for the Afghan government a cornerstone of America’s counterinsurgency strategy in Afghanistan. Nigeria To Charge Dick Cheney In $180 Million Bribery Case, Issue Interpol Arrest Warrant

The energy services company Dick Cheney ran prior to becoming Vice President of the United States was atop the tongue of liberals each time it was awarded a contract in Iraq. Now the company's name, Halliburton, is being spoken somewhere else: Nigeria. According to a story filed late Wednesday( http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-12-01/nigeria-to-charge-dick-cheney-in-pip… ), Cheney will be indicted in a Nigerian bribery case as part of an investigation into an alleged $180 million bribery scandal. “Last week, Nigeria arrested at least 23 officials from companies including Halliburton, Saipem, Technip and a former subsidiary of Panalpina Welttransport Holding AG in connection with alleged illegal payments to Nigerian officials. Those detained were all freed on bail on Nov. 29,” Bloomberg News' Elisha Bala-Gbogbo wrote. “Authorities in the West African nation are probing Halliburton, Saipem and Technip for the alleged payment of $180 million in bribes to win a $6 billion liquefied natural-gas contract,” Bala-Gbogbo added. “Panalpina is being investigated for illegal payments it allegedly made to Nigerian customs officials on behalf of Royal Dutch Shell Plc.” The prosecuting counsel for the country's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said that indictments will be handed down in the next three days and that an arrest warrant for Cheney “will be issued and transmitted through Interpol.” Adds Bloomberg, “Obla said charges will be filed against current and former chief executive officers of Halliburton, including Cheney, who was CEO from 1995 to 2000, and its former unit KBR Inc., based in Houston, Texas; Technip SA, Europe’s second-largest oilfield- services provider; Eni SpA, Italy’s biggest oil company; and Saipem Construction Co., a unit of Eni. Obla didn’t identify the former officials whom he said held office when the alleged bribes were paid.” A spokesman for Cheney declined to comment. The US Securities and Exchange Committee probe focused on the deal as early as 2004. Wrote The Washington Post at the time: ( http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A35486-2004Jun11.html ) The Nigerian project, started in the early 1990s, was worth almost $5 billion to TSKJ, a partnership that included a KBR predecessor, as well as companies from France, Japan and the Netherlands. At issue are payments made to Tristar, a Gibraltar company that had a consulting arrangement with a corporation formed by TSKJ to “administer the contracts and execute the work” in Nigeria, a Halliburton spokeswoman said in response to questions. KBR, the engineering and construction subsidiary of Halliburton, was formed when Halliburton acquired Dresser Industries Inc. in 1998. It was a combination of Halliburton's Brown & Root and Dresser's M.W. Kellogg Co. Officials from the SEC and Cheney's office declined to comment. Early on Thursday, Halliburton said( http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f= /g/a/2010/12/02/bloomberg1376-LCSK1K6TTDS801-2FON5J2K50U6QS8ACM9RA159SE.DTL#ixzz16xiDvrD6) they hadn't seen the new charges, but still denied their involvement. “Halliburton's oil-field services operations in Nigeria have never in any way been part of the LNG project and none of the Halliburton employees have ever had any connection to or participation in that project,” Tara Mullee Agard, a spokeswoman for the Houston-based company, said in an e-mailed response to Bloomberg. Added Bloomberg: “Halliburton Co., the world's second- largest oilfield-services provider, said it hasn't seen any amended charges by Nigerian authorities who plan to indict current and former employees in a bribery scandal.” added by: toyotabedzrock

Wikileaks ‘hacked ahead of secret US document release’ (is this why we were asked to download?)

Whistle-blowing website Wikileaks says it has come under attack from a computer-hacking operation, ahead of a release of secret US documents. “We are currently under a mass distributed denial of service attack,” it said on its Twitter feed earlier. It added that several newspapers will go ahead and publish the documents released to them by Wikileaks even if the site goes down. The US state department has said the release will put many lives at risk. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has said the US authorities are afraid of being held to account. Wikileaks has said the release of classified messages sent by US embassies will be bigger than past releases on Afghanistan and Iraq. The newspapers set to publish details of the US embassy cables include Spain's El Pais, France's Le Monde, Germany's Speigel, the UK's Guardian and the New York Times. The latest leak is expected to include documents covering US dealings and diplomats' confidential views of countries including Australia, Britain, Canada, Israel, Russia and Turkey. “The material that we are about to release covers essentially every major issue in every country in the world,” Mr Assange told reporters by video link on Sunday. Excuse Adam Lambert While He Kisses Some Guy…

Adam Lambert paid homage to Jimi Hendrix at a concert in France last night. And to the countless music fans that have often mistaken the lyrics to this icon’s classic 1967 single “Purple Haze.” As part of his Glam Nation Tour in Europe, Lambert treated concert goers to a rendition of this single, switching up the words from “Excuse me while I kiss the sky” to “Excuse me while I kiss some guy.” Not merely apt for Adam, the latter verse has been sung so often that a website has actually been created in its honor . Click on the images above to enlarge shots of Lambert on stage. Then, sit back, relax and watch the video of him covering Hendrix below. It’s great stuff. Purple Haze Renditon
