World cup fans turn to cellphones

World Cup soccer fans turning more to cellphones (Reuters) – The billions of fans of soccer’s World Cup , globally the premiere sporting event, will increasingly turn to mobile phones to track the action, according to a Nielsen survey released on Thursday. More than half of the 27,000 people surveyed in 55 countries plan to follow the popular soccer tournament, which is played every four years and begins in South Africa on June 11, Nielsen said in a survey provided to Reuters. Twenty-one percent said they would get information about the tournament on their mobile device and 9 percent would download an application to track the action. “This event is the biggest in the world of sports by far,” Roger Entner, Nielsen’s senior vice president for mobile insights, said in a telephone interview. “In 2010, mobile is really starting to be a medium for soccer fans worldwide to connect with the game.” The popular FIFA soccer tournament drew more than 700 million TV viewers when it was last played in 2006, including more than 120 million U.S. viewers who watched at least one minute of World Cup telecasts, Nielsen said. While this is the first such Nielsen survey, Entner said the numbers using cellphones to follow the event will be far higher than 2006. “The last World Cup , there was no iPhone,” he said of Apple Inc’s ( AAPL.O ) popular smartphone introduced in 2007. U.S. smartphone penetration has surged to 22 percent from 3.8 percent four years ago, he said. In France, Germany , Italy, Spain and the UK the rate has grown to a range of 21 percent to 36 percent from 4 percent to 10 percent in 2006. With more powerful, faster devices and networks, those growth trends will only continue with widespread mobile video and TV being the next step, Entner said. Of those surveyed, 51 percent said they intend to follow the tournament, including 84 percent in Brazil, 83 percent in Argentina, 76 percent in South Korea , 75 percent in Italy and Portugal, 69 percent in Zambia and almost two-thirds of the people in China, Nielsen said. “It’s mind blowing. It really shows how it is a global phenomenon,” Entner said. “We see some of the highest intended usage rates actually coming out of the Middle East, Africa and the Pacific Rim.” Countries with high planned cellphone use to access World Cup information include Venezuela (27 percent), United States (23 percent) and Brazil (21 percent), Nielsen said. In fact, in every country in the Middle East and Africa where people were surveyed, the rate was between 22 percent and 30 percent. “People intend to use mobile to supplement their hunger for information about the game,” Entner said. “If you can’t watch the game live, you’re going to follow it through your mobile device.” The rates in Europe were far lower — 3 percent in soccer powers Germany and Spain — which Entner thought made sense given most of those countries were in the same time zone as the World Cup and had a higher penetration of TV sets, meaning fans could watch the game live more easily. Finally, 34 percent of those surveyed picked Brazil as the likely Cup winner, easily outdistancing Argentina, England and Germany . Entner is rooting for his native Germany but has picked Brazil. The World Cup Of Rock: MTV News’ Global Challenge Begins Friday!

In the spirit of our March Madness competition, we pit rock bands against each other — fans decide who wins! By Kyle Anderson and James Montgomery Photo: Alexander Hassenstein/FIFA/Getty Every four years, the international community comes together to decide which nation has the most dominant soccer team (or football team, provided that you live anywhere but the United States). The 2010 FIFA World Cup is upon us, and the first matches start in earnest on Friday. Coincidentally, that’s also the day that will see the launch of the 2010 MTV World Cup of Rock tournament. Just as we did with our very popular Musical March Madness matchup, we’ve taken a huge sporting event and translated it to the music world. And once again, it’s up to you the readers to decide which country rocks hardest and best. The 16 countries that qualified for the World Cup of Rock are grouped into four groups of four teams each. Play will begin on Friday with a match-up between the first two teams, and every day will see a different match-up. Once each team has played the others in its group, the two top seeds from each group will qualify for the bracketed tournament. From there, it’s single elimination until one nation is left standing. Each country will be represented by a contingent of particular artists, but you should consider any group from that particular country eligible for play. The goal of the tournament is to decide just which country rocks hardest and best. There will be one match every day, with the winners decided by your votes on the MTV Newsroom Blog . Tiebreakers will be decided by the most votes cast for each individual country, so vote for your favorite early and often. Let’s meet the teams! Group A France : The French won the World Cup in 1998 and they have another strong chance to score big this year. In order to advance in the World Cup of Rock, they’ll have to rely on the likes of Phoenix, Daft Punk, Air and a bevy of better-than-you-think-they-are French hip-hop MCs. Mexico : The Mexican team has everything: Veteran leadership in Carlos Santana, youthful energy from Kinky and an air of big-game cool from Plastilina Mosh. Nigeria : Powered by Afrobeat (first birthed by the late Fela Kuti and heard everywhere from Talking Heads to Kanye West), these plucky underdogs are capable of anything. Uruguay : The small South American powerhouse has won two World Cups (including the very first one in 1930) and could be a surprising dark horse this time around. Their representation in the World Cup of Rock essentially consists of one person — Cobra Starship frontman Gabe Saporta — but he’s a pretty great guy to have on your front line. Group B England : The English do a few things exceptionally well, with soccer and rock just behind drinking and reality television. With Coldplay, Damon Albarn, Muse and Radiohead leading the way, it should be able to assert its dominance early and often. South Africa : The host nation doesn’t have the strongest soccer team but a solid batch of musical representatives, including arena hippie Dave Matthews, prog icon Manfred Mann and tongue-twisting rapper Jean Grae. South Korea : Though it doesn’t have a great shot at the Cup, South Korea has a secret weapon in the World Cup of Rock: His name is Rain (a.k.a. MTV Movie Awards B, and he is a one man dynamo. United States of America : Easily the favorite, considering that it basically invented rock and roll, and with any number of massive international superstars at its disposal — including the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters and 75 percent of Metallica — there’s no reason it shouldn’t run the table. Group C Brazil : The Brazilian soccer team has won more World Cups than any other nation, and they’ve done it with varied attacks and dynamic stars. Their World Cup of Rock contingent is similarly eclectic and flashy, with the likes of legendary psychedelic rockers Os Mutantes, manic dance troupe CSS and the savagery of Max Cavalera, the man responsible for Sepultura and Soulfly. Germany : The three-time champions (and seven-time finalists) are one of the favorites to take home the World Cup, and their band contingent is lead by one of the strongest front lines in all of music: Tokio Hotel. But will goalkeeper David Hasselhoff be able to lead them to victory? Japan : Unorthodoxy is definitely the order of the day for their musical representatives, with metal mavens Dir en Grey, pop sensation Utada, punk veterans Shonen Knife and sugary power poppers Puffy AmiYumi leading the way. Spain : The perfect blend of past and future, the Spanish contingent has a powerful figurehead in Julio Iglesias (who actually played professional soccer before becoming a pop star) and bright young stars in Alejandro Sanz, Enrique Iglesias and David Bisbal. Group D Argentina : They’re one of the odds-on favorites to take home the Cup this year, but they are underdogs in the World Cup of Rock. Australia : The soccer team is called the Socceroos, but the Rockaroos (clever, huh?) should bulldoze the competition with powerhouses like AC/DC, Wolfmother and Jet. Denmark : Denmark’s soccer team plays a pretty loose game, and so do their rock bands. How do you prepare for Mew, the Raveonettes and Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich all at the same time? Italy : Italy won the World Cup in 2006, besting France in one of the most memorable finals in history. Can a team of mostly hard-edged groups like Lacuna Coil and Starf—ers lead them to victory in the World Cup of Rock? Remember, the match-ups start on Friday at the MTV Newsroom Blog . So enjoy all of the soccer action for the next month and get behind your favorite team in the World Cup of Rock.

Jon Gosselin: Stoned Out of His Mind

This isn’t breaking news at all, but it is hilarious: A video of Jon Gosselin stoned last summer with then-girlfriend Hailey Glassman has just leaked online. If you recall, the two just started dating and were vacationing in St. Tropez, France, with Ed Hardy designer Christian Audigier. Looks like they had fun. An insider tells Radar Online , the king of exclusive non-stories, that they smoked spliffs (marijuana and tobacco mixed) and were drunk on champagne. Jon Gosselin, who was still married to Kate then, took turns with Hailey Glassman filming each other, making cracks about the French and lactose issues. The trip marked Jon and Hailey’s first public appearance together. When Glassman references her curly hair during a salon mishap she experienced in St. Tropez, Jon interrupts with: “It looked like big Jewish pubes.” Class . At one point, Jon, with a cigarette up his nose, says: “This is how the French smoke. They smoke so much they put cigarettes in every orifice of their body.” While there is no paraphernalia or anything, and it certainly matters little if they were actually stoned, their behavior would certainly suggest that it’s true. You can see the rest for yourself after the jump: Jon Gosselin Stoned

Eminem’s Recovery Leaks Two Weeks Early

Rapper’s latest is officially due out on June 22. By Gil Kaufman Eminem’s Recovery Photo: Interscope It doesn’t matter if you’re a new kid on the block like Drake or a veteran like Eminem , chances are your new album is bound to leak early at some point. Marshall Mathers is the latest to fall to the leak plague, as his upcoming Recovery hit the Internet on Monday, two weeks before its June 22 official release date, and spread like wildfire. Fan forums immediately blew up with quick-take reviews on the rapper’s second album in as many years, raving about the many different sounds Slim Shady tries on over the course of the disc. The opening track, “Cold Wind Blows,” finds Em taking aim at some of his favorite targets, viciously daring haters to take him on while dropping references to Elton John, Michael Vick, Aquaman, Michael J. Fox and Mariah Carey before dipping into a sing-songy chorus, “I’m as cold as the cold wind … blows, bla bla bla blows.” He gets contemplative on the expansive acoustic ballad “Space Bound” and praises his second chances on the gospel stomper “Cinderella Man.” He also weaves his way around a gorgeous Rihanna chorus on the troubled-love ballad “Love the Way You Lie.” The leak comes less than a week after the online debut of the second song from the album, an unexpected collaboration with Pink called “Won’t Back Down.” The DJ Khalil-produced track finds Em dropping his usual verbal bombs, taking on all comers in his inimitable style. “Listen, garden tool/ Don’t make me introduce you to my power tool,” Em raps over Khalil’s droning organ chords. “You know the f—ing drill/ How you douche bags feel?/ Knowing you’re disposable, Summer’s Eve, Massengill.” Eminem spoke about his Recovery collaborations while in France on a promotional tour. Pink, Rihanna and Lil Wayne are all featured, a departure from Em’s previous projects, where the guest lists were usually limited to Shady or Aftermath artists. For “Won’t Back Down,” he explained, Pink was added to the track after it was completed. “When I did the song that I did with Pink, I laid my parts first and kind of heard her on the record and felt that she would smash this record,” Em said. Pink does her part with a fiery warning in the chorus: “You can sound the alarm, you can call out your guards/ You can fence in your yard, you can pull all the cards/ But I won’t back down, I won’t back down,” she sings. The video for “Not Afraid,” the album’s first single that’s been storming the charts, premiered on Sunday. In the dark clip directed by Richard Lee, the rapper stands on the ledge of a roof, slowly edging closer to the edge as he raps about coming out of a perilous time in his life. He’s able to pull back from the abyss and takes a walk through the streets of Newark ending up in a hall of mirrors where’s he’s forced to confront his reflection. Game Releases New Song With T.I., Robin Thicke On Twitter

MC posts a link to a mixed and mastered version of his latest single, ‘Pushin’ It.’ By Jayson Rodriguez The Game Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic The Game debuted a new track featuring T.I. and Robin Thicke from his forthcoming The R.E.D. Album via Twitter on Friday (June 4). The track, “Pushin’ It,” actually leaked to the Web on Thursday, but the Compton rapper released a mixed and mastered version of the song. The sexy number finds the rappers trading verses trumpeting their credentials with the ladies while Robin Thicke croons the chorus. “I’m a rude boy, so I’m gonna get it up/ Rihanna post-Chris, Matt Kemp, baby, this is us,” Game raps. “So talk to me, have you ever been to Cannes?/ Yeah, south of France/ Next stop Japan, let’s go.” “Pushing it, your lips/ ‘Cause my drug, it’s your lips” Thicke sings. The song follows his street single “Shake” and Game’s lead offering from The R.E.D. Album, “It Must Be Me.” The video for “Shake” premiered in an exclusive MTV News post and the clip for the Neptunes-produced “It Must Be Me” is slated to premier Friday on BET’s “106 & Park.” The former G-Unit cohort recruited a bevy of high-profile producers to man the boards for the project, and reunited with mentor Dr. Dre. “I feel great about this album,” Game told MTV News earlier this year. “It’s back full-force Aftermath and I’m conjoined with Star Trak.” (Pharrell Williams is one of the LP’s executive producers.) “I got this colorful movement over here where it’s beautiful music on this side [with Star Trak] — then when I need to go dark or super grown and sexy, I got Dre over here. The combination is crazy — mixed in with a Cool & Dre track and RZA track and all the sh– I been doing. The only person I’m upset I didn’t work with on this album is DJ Premier. I feel his sh– would have been perfect for this all-star producer cast that I have. One Premier track would have did me just fine. I would have murdered that sh–. But we ain’t get it in, ’cause he was doing a whole bunch of sh– for Christina Aguilera. I’m just Game. So I gotta just wait for the next album.” What do you think about The Game’s new track?
