Freddie Gibbs, Kendrick Lamar Explain #1 Rule Of Ghostwriting

‘Shhh, don’t tell nobody,’ Gibbs says on ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Freddie Gibbs, Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock Photo: MTV News The #1 rule of ghostwriting in rap is not to talk about ghostwriting in rap. Freddie Gibbs and Kendrick Lamar are not only two of the most exciting up-and-coming performers in the game, but dynamic writers as well, so it’s no wonder that others would enlist the two rap rookies to pen lyrics. Not that Gangsta Gibbs or K. Dot would reveal their list of clients. “Shhh, don’t tell nobody,” Gibbs joked on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live” when asked if he has ever writing lyrics for another MC. Still, show host Sway Calloway pressed on. “Is it a written agreement, is it a verbal agreement?” he asked. “It’s a money agreement with me. If your money ain’t talking, I’mma talk. I’mma bust you out and say, ‘Yeah, I wrote that for him,’ ” Gibbs replied before admitting that he has lent his pen to about five different artists since his rise through rap’s ranks. Kendrick was even more cryptic. Since his name started buzzing in late 2009, Lamar has been rumored to have written lyrics for some of the game’s biggest artists, but nothing has ever been confirmed. When Game dropped his R.E.D. Album on August 23, however, both Lamar and Jay-Z prot

Freddie Gibbs To Talk Straight, ‘No Filla’ On ‘RapFix Live’!

Gary, Indiana’s own Gangsta Gibbs will swing through on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Rob Markman Freddie Gibbs Photo: Roger Kisby/ Getty Images The real is back! On Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET, “RapFix Live” returns with Freddie Gibbs , who will hit the couch to discuss everything from coming up in Gary, Indiana, to signing with Young Jeezy’s CTE label to his upcoming project Cold Day in Hell. While rap has diversified its cast of characters to include MCs from all walks of life, Gibbs has remained unapologetically gangster . Originally signed by Interscope in 2005, Gangsta Gibbs struggled to get the label to see his vision and was eventually released from his deal in October 2007. But in 2009, Freddie proved that there was room for his brand of music. With his The Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs and midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik, Gibbs made fans take notice. His grind paid off, and in 2010, Freddie earned himself a spot on XXL magazine’s 2010 Freshmen cover. He went on to drop the independent release Str8 Killa No Filla on Decon Records. In April, the Midwest MC made his biggest move yet when he inked with Young Jeezy’s CTE (Corporate Thugz Entertainment). Since the signing, the pair have released quite a few songs, including their hustle ode “Run DMC,” “Do It for You” and “Rough,” a song off of the Snowman’s latest mixtape, The Real Is Back 2. “RapFix Live” will also bring you backstage at the Rock the Bells tour stop in New York City this past weekend. On Saturday, Nas, Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, Slaughterhouse and Mobb Deep all performed, and “RFL” has all the exclusives for you as well as our regular Get in the Game and Weekend Rotation segments. Catch Freddie Gibbs on “RapFix Live” Wednesday, September 7, at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com! Related Artists Freddie Gibbs

Curren$y Says One Alchemist Song Turned Into Covert Coup Mixtape

‘You work with artists, and then that way, your music will stand,’ Curren$y tells MTV News of picking producers. By Alvin Blanco Curren$y Photo: MTV News New Orleans rapper Curren$y has a fresh deal with Warner Bros. Records, but it’s not stopping him from releasing free music. The former Young Money Records signee made his name in the hip-hop world via prolific mixtape releases that helped land him on the cover of XXL Magazine’s 2009 Freshmen cover. Now, Curren$y will be releasing the Covert Coup mixtape April 20. The album will be available for download at CurrensySpitta.com . Covert Coup is produced by Alchemist (Eminem, Mobb Deep, Nas), and guests include Freddie Gibbs and Prodigy. The mixtape came together after Spitta and Alchemist connected to record only one song. “I was going to do one record and give it away, that night, but we did three,” Curren$y told MTV News. “We did one; I was like, ‘We’ll give this one away.’ Then [Alchemist] was like, ‘Well, we need another one to make up for that one.’ So we did one, and I was like, ‘Yo, let me hear that other beat that you played before you played the one we just did,’ and then that turned into another one. And three is, like, 10. You might as well go ahead and get it done.” Curren$y is comfortable collaborating on projects where one producer oversees the bulk of the beats. He released a pair of albums last year ( Pilot Talk and Pilot Talk 2 ) that were handled almost entirely by Ski Beatz (Jay-Z, Camp Lo). “Producers, that’s an art. So you work with artists, not hustlers,” Curren$y explained. “Not people just milling beats. It’s like beat mills, don’t do that. You work with artists, and then that way, your music will stand. You’re not trying to sell 10 million records right now. Sell that over time. Sell it to where you’re 50 and your records still selling because people who grew up with you are trying to show their kids what’s effed up about the game, and then they go to the record store and buy your record to play that for them.” On the day of Covert Coup ‘s release, Curren$y will kick off a nationwide Jet Life Tour that runs through June. Its first show, in New Orleans, will be streamed live to Los Angeles and New York. The Covert Coup track list, according to Warner Bros.: 1. “BBS” 2. “The Type” (featuring Prodigy) 3. “Blood Sweat and Gears” (featuring Fiend) 4. “Ventilation” 5. “Life Instructions” (featuring Smoke Dza) 6. “Smoke Break” 7. “Double 0 7” 8. “Scottie Pippen” (featuring Freddie Gibbs) 9. “Full Metal” Will you check out Curren$y’s latest tape? Put something in the stores for my fans to support and still give them music like I’ve been giving them on the Internet. You get like 28 songs for eight bucks. I’m creating my own way to sell music. I feel like the ground-roots people that’s supporting is loving the music, so it’s cool. “Str8 Killa No Filla is the mixtape. It’s got 22 joints. The EP is Str8 Killa. I studied him, and I put my own flavor and came with the Str8 Killa. It’s going to jump me off like Trap or Die did for Jeezy. ” Str8 Killa is gonna blow your mind, he added. “The world kinda got A.D.D. right now. You gotta keep fresh material. With me putting out a body of work, it works in my favor. I want people to fall in love with me as an artist. I don’t want one song to be bigger than Freddie Gibbs.
