Let the boycotts begin The mayor of Boston is vowing to block Chick-fil-A from opening a restaurant near the city’s “Freedom Trail” because of the company’s stance on gay marriage . “Chick-fil-A doesn’t belong in Boston. You can’t have a business in the city of Boston that discriminates against a population. We’re an open city, we’re a city that’s at the forefront of inclusion,” Mayor Thomas M. Menino told the Boston Herald Thursday. “That’s the Freedom Trail. That’s where it all started right here. And we’re not going to have a company, Chick-fil-A or whatever the hell the name is, on our Freedom Trail,” he added. Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy told the Baptist Press this week that his privately owned company is “guilty as charged” in support of what he called the biblical definition of the family. Will you still be supporting Chick-fil-A?

Against Me! speak for the first time since Laura’s Rolling Stone interview, remembering the ‘simple’ way she told them she’s transgender. By James Montgomery Laura Jane Grace Photo: When Against Me! ‘s Laura Jane Grace announced in Rolling Stone that she was transgender, the majority of the story focused on her life … with only a few paragraphs dedicated to how she broke the news to her bandmates. This was understandable, of course, and though the details included in that RS story are scarce, they’re also incredibly endearing: On the drive from Gabel’s St. Augustine, Florida, studio back to their homes in Gainesville, the AM! guys debated whether or not they needed to hit the gym “so that if anyone messed with Gabel, they’d be able to throw down.” But, when Against Me! sat down with MTV News for their first interview since the Rolling Stone piece shone a spotlight on their band, they revealed that there was another reason the story skimped on particulars about Laura’s big revelation: Namely, to them, it wasn’t really all that big of a revelation to begin with. “We went to the studio just to hang out, we weren’t even practicing, we were just having a meeting, and talking, and she just told us,” longtime bassist Andrew Seward said. “It was kind of simple in a way … [and then] on the drive back, because it’s 80 miles from the studio back to Gainesville, I was just going through past lyrics and stuff going ‘God, how did I not think of that?’ ” “I didn’t want to be melodramatic about it when approaching friends … for me, it is a non-issue. It’s something that’s always been there for me, I’ve just never verbalized it before,” Laura added. “I didn’t really plan on it, I forget what exactly we were talking about, but I got to this point where I felt really frustrated that I wasn’t making the point I wanted to make, and I realized I wasn’t making it because I wasn’t fully explaining myself, and the part I was leaving out was this big integral piece of myself. So it just came out of my mouth, you know, and we were just sitting there and it was like, ‘So this is the way it is.’ ” Still, Laura admitted she had no idea how her bandmates would take the news, or even if they’d still be her bandmates after she told them. All she knew was that, both personally and professionally, she was tired of keeping secrets … she wanted everyone to know she was transgender, repercussions be damned. “I reached a point for myself where writing, I couldn’t focus on anything else but writing from a trans perspective or writing about trans issues, and as the album we’re working on came together, it became more and more apparent to me that, at some point, I was going to have to say something to the rest of the band,” she said. “Otherwise, if you’re taking the lyrics to these songs out of context [they’re] going to be misinterpreted … so we kind of reached that point where once we started getting in to doing vocals and you’re hearing the lyrics I was like, ‘OK, this is the deal. … There are going to be things that are going to be happening for me that, if I don’t tell you this right now will probably look more like I’m insane as opposed to this is what I’m doing.’ ” And yet, no one did. And, after being assured by her bandmates that Against Me! wasn’t going anywhere — “It was just kind of like, ‘Let’s still do the band; let’s still do everything we normally do.’ That’s pretty much the extent of it,” drummer Jay Weinberg said — they’re hard at work on their new album; a conceptual record they’re calling Transgender Dysphoria Blues. It represents Laura’s most personal work to date, an exploration of her battles with shame and depression, and the freedom of her new life. And, with her band backing her, she can’t wait to bring the music to the masses. “For me, the fear was, if I don’t do this and I don’t come out with this now, that the band can’t go on. It was just feeling like this is what I need in order to continue to be doing this,” she said. “Feeling like you’re stereotyped into this role of an angry young male, especially in the punk rock scene, was just suffocating to me … And feeling like so many of the things I was trying to express in my lyrics were being lost on people because it wasn’t being framed in the right context, I didn’t even want to do it anymore. … But now, I do.” Related Videos Laura Jane Grace: A Life Unburdened Related Artists Against Me!
‘The numbers were eye-popping. You’d think Iron Man was in the film,’ one box-office expert tells MTV News of new Wes Anderson film. By Fallon Prinzivalli Ed Norton in “Moonrise Kingdom” Photo: Focus Features As “Men in Black 3” knocked “Marvel’s The Avengers” off its record-breaking throne and nabbed the title of #1 film in America over Memorial Day weekend, Focus Features’ “Moonrise Kingdom” broke its own box-office records. The Wes Anderson -directed film, which opened in two theaters in New York and two in Los Angeles, grossed more than $669,000 this weekend. It raked in an average of $130,752 per location, setting a new record previously held by 2006’s “Dreamgirls.” “Wes Anderson films always open in limited release with very high averages as his fanbase is very loyal,” says Box Office Guru editor Gitesh Pandya , “but the ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ numbers were eye-popping. You’d think Iron Man was in the film.” Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations also attributes the success to Anderson’s “ardent” fanbase. “[His fans] have seen him produce just a handful of films over the course of his entire career, which began with 1996’s ‘Bottle Rocket.’ Absence makes the heart grow fonder, and ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ is Anderson’s first live-action film in five years, so there was no doubt a burning desire to see his latest whimsical dramedy,” he says. “Filmmakers with unique and authentic voices are far and few between, and Anderson is something of a national treasure for the hipster collective.” “Moonrise Kingdom” takes place in the summer of 1965 and follows the search for two 12-year-olds who flee their hometown in New England for a wilderness adventure. The film’s success follows its debut in Cannes, France , where it opened the city’s famous film festival. Bock believes its premiere at such a large venue contributed to the buzz, keeping it in the mind of audiences — despite an influx of blockbusters hitting cinemas around the globe. “There is always room for a small, original tale amongst the blockbuster giants of summer, and ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ may just be this summer’s ‘Midnight in Paris,’ ” he said, referencing the Woody Allen film that won him an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. “The big test for [‘Moonrise’] will be when it debuts in moderate wide release (400-plus theaters), reaching smaller markets that probably haven’t seen a film of his since his biggest hit, 2001’s ‘The Royal Tenenbaums,’ which grossed $52 million. While Anderson’s films are revered by critics and cinephiles, wide audiences haven’t exactly embraced the kooky sensibilities and eccentric outlook he emotes in his films.” But Phil Contrino of BoxOffice.com believes an A-list cast including Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Edward Norton and Tilda Swinton will help bring the film to a broader audience — though he does think widespread popularity may be limited. “If you don’t like Wes by now, this movie won’t change your mind,” Contrino said. “He’s burrowed very deep into his own style eccentricities.” “Moonrise Kingdom” was too late to earn any Movie Awards nominations at this year’s show, but tune in this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET to celebrate your other favorite films, including “Hunger Games,” “Bridesmaids” and the final “Harry Potter” film. Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live this Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.
The Throne don’t appear in their new ‘No Church in the Wild’ video, but deliver a powerful clip all the same. By Rob Markman Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild” music video Photo: Vevo/ Def Jam/ Roc-A-Fella “Power concedes nothing without a demand”: If a quote could sum up the Throne’s “No Church in the Wild” music video, Frederick Douglass’ famed call for revolution might do it best. Neither Kanye West nor Jay-Z actually appear in their Romain Gavras-directed clip, which was released online Tuesday (May 29) — and, frankly, an appearance by the megastar duo could’ve very well hindered the powerful message they were trying to send. Moments before the beat builds, we see a young masked revolutionary ignite a Molotov cocktail and walk in slow motion toward a wall of police officers who stand unified, draped in riot gear. The clash begins with a fiery explosion in the middle of a Prague street. Gavras depicts a power struggle familiar to people all across the globe, whether in Los Angeles in 1992 or London in 2011. Set to the buzzing drums of the 88-Keys and Yeezy-produced track, ill-equipped freedom fighters with nothing to lose wage war against an oppressive regime. Of course, there is nothing in the video that directly details a specific storyline or plot: Instead, viewers are expected to rely on their own interpretations of the scenes that look taken straight from CNN. Fearless protestors hurl stones and fight armed officers using only their bare fists. In one scene, a cop who rides atop a horse chases a revolutionary down an alleyway and beats him with a club. Young men are beaten, choked, sprayed with mace and dragged across the concrete as Frank Ocean soulfully croons, “Will he make it out alive?” in time with the staged anarchy. The gritty violence and social commentary are reminiscent of Gavras’ video for M.I.A.’s “Born Free.” Though “No Church” isn’t as graphic (there’s no nudity or massive death scenes), it is moving all the same. By the end of the five-minute video, the freedom fighters seem to have notched a victory of some sort, standing in triumph in the face of their oppressors. But even if a single battle is won, there is no conclusive ending, meaning that the war still rages on. One of the catchiest lines in the song is a party-weary Kanye spitting, “Sunglasses and Advil/ Last night was mad real.” After the track’s war-torn visual, the lyric can (and should) take on new meaning. ‘Saturday Night Live,’ Dalai Lama, Thom Yorke and fun. also honor Beasties rapper MCA. By Gil Kaufman Michael ‘Mike D’ Diamond, Adam ‘Ad-Rock’ Horovitz and Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch of The Beastie Boys Photo: WireImage Two days after losing his life-long friend and band mate of 30 years, Adam “MCA” Yauch , Beastie Boys rapper Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz posted a heartfelt note on the band’s Tumblr page about his late comrade. “As you can imagine, s— is just fkd up right now,” he wrote in the blog, which was accompanied by a picture of a hand with the message, “PWR 2 MCA” in front of a bank of CDs. “But I wanna say thank you to all our friends and family (which are kinda one in the same) for all the love and support. I’m glad to know that all the love that Yauch has put out into the world is coming right back at him.” Yauch, who died at age 47 on Friday after a three-year battle with cancer, was shouted out by many of his friends, admirers and acts he’d influenced over the weekend. Fun. threw in a verse of “Sabotage” as part of their encore at Washington D.C.’s 9:30 Club on Friday night and “Saturday Night Live” played a clip of the group’s 1994 performance of “Sure Shot” on the show featuring Rihanna as a musical guest. HBO dedicated the broadcast of last month’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony into its broadcast of the proceedings, where the B-Boys were inducted as only the third rap group to enter the the Hall. Among the luminaries weighing in was exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader the Dalai Lama, who released a statement in which he said, “Adam had helped us raise awareness on the plight of the Tibetan people by organizing various freedom Tibet concerts and he will be remembered by his holiness and the Tibetan people.” Yauch, a Buddhist who was behind the landmark all-star Tibetan Freedom concerts of the late 1990s, was blessed by the Dalai Lama last year. MTV News also took to the airwaves to express our appreciation for the influential artist with the one-hour special “Adam Yauch: Remembering a Beastie Boy,” during which we reflected on the legendary MC’s career and the indelible mark he made on music as a whole, as well as on society. Kim Gordon, former bassist for Sonic Youth, who were big supporters of the Tibetan Freedom shows, issued a statement to England’s New Musical Express , in which she praised Yauch’s lyrical abilities, “He told me once that he really liked the lyrics to [Sonic Youth’s] ‘Bull In The Heather’. It surprised me that he had even listened to it. It meant a lot to me that he went out of his way to tell me that, coming from such a great rapper and lyricist.” Another Tibetan Freedom supporter and performer, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke , posted a remembrance on the band’s website, in which he wrote, “I was very sad to hear the news of Adam Yauch’s death yesterday. We looked up to the Beastie Boys a lot when we were starting out and how they maintained artistic control making wicked records but still were on a major label, and the Tibetan Freedom Concerts they organized had a very big influence on me personally and the way Adam conducted himself and dealt with it all impressed me a lot. He was a mellow and v smart guy. May he rest in peace.” The tributes followed earlier ones from the likes of Madonna , the B-Boys’ longtime DJ, Mix Master Mike and Justin Timberlake as well as in-concert shout-outs from Coldplay and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
