‘Mob Wives’ Star Drita Working On Debut Mixtape

After her French Montana collabo, Drita tells MTV News she plans to get back in the booth. By Rob Markman Drita Davanzo Photo: MTV News Drita D’Avanzo didn’t plan to be a television star. No, the “Mob Wives” star’s first dream was to rock the mic. Now, thanks to a kick-start from French Montana , the reality TV beauty has finally gotten her chance. MC Drita recently starred in French’s video for “Everything’s a Go”; she even got a chance to lay a verse over the hard-edge street track. And it was all documented on a recent episode of VH1’s “Mob Wives.” “Honestly, it was the best feeling in the world,” Drita told MTV News on Tuesday. “That really was a dream of mine, growing up since the day I was walkin’, since the day I heard rap music it was over for me.” And like so many of today’s current rap stars, young Drita was first inspired by a couple of well-regarded legends. “My first favorite rapper — and always will be — is Rakim. Eric B & Rakim Paid in Full was a tape that I destroyed, that was completely wrecked and I had to re-buy,” she said of the 1987 classic. “But when Biggie came into my life, it was completely over.” Drita’s “Wives” co-star Carla Facciolo vouched for her buddy’s love for hip-hop. “This one will just rap every single word, she don’t miss a friggin’ beat,” Carla said of Drita’s reaction whenever one of her favorite rap songs comes on the radio or in the club. D’Avanzo was so turned on by her recent experience in the booth, she revealed to us that she plans to continue to make moves in rap and drop a mixtape. “I’m workin’ on it. I’m in the studio as we speak. And I love it,” she gushed in her unmistakable Staten Island, New York, accent. Carla is supportive, but don’t expect her to drop a guest verse on the upcoming tape. “I could be in the video, maybe looking pretty somewhere, but not rapping and not singing, definitely not,” she laughed. What do you think of Drita getting in the rap game? Tell us in the comments!

Nas Toasts Rick Ross’ ‘Stay Schemin’ ‘ Sample

‘That’s what hip-hop is — we take pieces of this and that and make it new,’ Nas says of track featuring Drake, French Montana. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nas Photo: MTV News On Nas ‘ classic 2001 battle track “Ether,” the Queens, New York, rap great issues a challenge. Of course there’s the one he threw to then-rival Jay-Z, but that’s old news. In the song’s first verse, God’s Son declares that he’s the “truest” and then dares rap fans: “Name a rapper that I ain’t influence.” Nasir’s artistic reach may be hard to quantify, but every now and then you can see the Don’s musical DNA embedded in new rap material. Take Rick Ross , Drake and French Montana’s “Stay Schemin,’ ” for example: The song’s melodic hook is a direct lift from the unreleased “Stay Schemin’ Stay Dreamin’.” “It’s a big record,” Nas told “RapFix Live” host Sway when he appeared on the show last month. On the original Nas version, which was recorded in the late 1990s, the veteran MC sings of a jealous foe who’s plotting against him. “Lookin’ back at times, when I had on my shines, you were standing there/ I never tried to dis you, you didn’t need your pistol, why’d you have to take it there,” he starts off in the first verse. For the updated version, Ross recruits Bronx rapper Montana to lay an interpolation of Nas’ old-school hook. “Stay schemin’, n—as tryna get at me,” French harmonizes in homage. Nas says that the new record reflects rap’s sample culture, and ultimately he is a fan. “That’s what hip-hop is — we take pieces of this and that and we make it new. That record’s crazy.” How do you think Rick Ross’ “Stay Schemin’ ” holds up against Nas’ original? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Nas Rick Ross

Bad Boy’s MGK And French Montana Headline XXL Freshman Concert

Iggy Azalea, Don Trip and Roscoe Dash take the stage to celebrate hip-hop magazine’s freshman class. By Rob Markman, with additional reporting by Nadeska Alexis Machine Gun Kelly performs at XXL ‘s Freshman show on Monday Photo: Steve Mack/ FilmMagic NEW YORK — On his 1986 classic “Eric B. is President,” the great Rakim famously rapped “MC means move the crowd,” and last night the 2012 XXL Magazine Freshman class did just that — well, the bulk of them anyway. On Monday night, the rap mag, in conjunction with sponsors like Monster Energy Drink and Reebok, held its annual rookie concert, showcasing Machine Gun Kelly , French Montana , Future, Danny Brown , Hopsin, Macklemore, Roscoe Dash, Iggy Azalea, Don Trip and Kid Ink. Things started a bit slow as the crowd filed in to the Best Buy Theater in Times Square. It was approximately 8 p.m. when L.A. MC Kid Ink took the stage to perform joints from his Wheels Up mixtape; Don Trip followed with a poignant performance that included his soul-bearing “Letter to My Son.” It was 9 p.m. when the night’s hosts, Hot 97’s Cipha Sounds and Peter Rosenberg, introduced Iggy Azalea, XXL ‘s first-ever female freshman. She started with “My World” from her Ignorant Art mixtape and ended with her latest single “Murda Bizness” sans her Grand Hustle mentor T.I. “I wish Tip was here,” Iggy told MTV News on Monday just hours before she hit the stage. “It’s so sad that he’s not.” A few other ATL talents were in attendance though. Roscoe Dash ran through a collection of his own hits and high-powered collaborations like Waka Flocka Flame’s “No Hands” and Big Sean’s “Marvin & Chardonnay.” Then Seattle rapper Macklemore brought a tremendous amount of pageantry to the stage, being the only freshman to rock with a horn player. Hopsin came out to his “Ill Mind of Hopsin 4,” the song where he takes aim at Odd Future. “All these no-flow, gimmicky-ass, fired-up behaviors/ With wack beats and gap teeth like Tyler, the Creator,” he spit as the crowd cheered in approval. Hop continued to thrill the crowd by bringing out Tech N9ne to perform their collaborative single “Am I Psycho.” However, things took a turn when Detroit rapper Danny Brown took the stage with the tongue-in-cheek single, “Radio Song.” The crowd jeered in disapproval, but later turned around when he brought out snubbed- XXL freshman Schoolboy Q. As the night began to wind down, XXL rolled out their heaviest hitters. Atlanta’s Future, with an astronaut mascot in tow, promoted his upcoming April 17 album Pluto by rocking songs like “Tony Montana” and his current single “Same Damn Time.” Hometown hero French Montana was next up. Not only did the Coke Boy perform all of his underground favorites like “Choppa, Choppa Down” and “Everything’s a Go,” French and his team flooded the stage to deliver his biggest hit “Shot Caller.” He then brought out Bad Boy labelmate Red Caf

Prodigy Crafts H.N.I.C. 3 From Mobb Deep Sessions

‘When you listen to the mixtape, you’re hearing all the songs that didn’t make the album that’s about to come out,’ Prodigy tells Mixtape Daily . By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ade Mangum Prodigy Photo: MTV News Mixtape Daily: Main Pick Mixtape : H.N.I.C. 3 Headliner : Prodigy Representing : Queens, New York Real Spit: : In the studio, Mobb Deep is all work and no play. For the group’s upcoming full-length album , Prodigy claims to have recorded a ton of songs — way more than an album’s worth of material. Rather than let them go to waste, Prodigy decided to gift-wrap 26 of those tracks and package them as his latest mixtape, H.N.I.C. 3 . “The process of recording the H.N.I.C. 3 mixtape, it’s basically when I’m working on an album, I’m working on hundreds of songs,” Prodigy told Mixtape Daily . “Mobb Deep, that’s just how we work: thousands and thousands of songs. When you listen to the mixtape, you’re hearing all the songs that didn’t make the album that’s about to come out, but it’s still good enough for representing Prodigy, representing H.N.I.C. , representing Infamous.” With a bulk of the production provided by Mobb Deep’s Havoc, Prodigy goes on a lyrical tear. The Queens MC balances out his features well. French Montana, Waka Flocka Flame, Cory Gunz and Lady Luck all show up to assist, but Pee remains the “Head N—a in Charge” throughout. On “That’s Nasty,” Prodigy shows flashes of the young version of himself that threatened to “Stab your brain with your nose bone” on his mid-’90s classic “Shook Ones Pt. II.” Over the bluesy Havoc-produced track, he starts, “Blood dribbling, while I stand back giggling/ Brass knuckles on my fingers and pain tingling.” The murderous theme carries throughout. On “Slaughterhouse,” Prodigy imagines bringing death to a government cooperative who takes the stand in court, and on “Make a Hole,” he recounts his days in jail, writing rhymes that he was unable to record. Now that he’s home, however, Prodigy doesn’t seem to be letting an opportunity pass him by. Maybe the thousands of songs he says he has in the stash is an exaggeration, but no matter the number, they all seem to be potent. Joints to Check For

Rick Ross Has No Beef With Pill

‘Once you rep the MMG flag, I’ll never step on your feet,’ Rick Ross tells MTV News of his former Maybach affiliate. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Rick Ross Photo: MTV News God Forgives, I Don’t may be the name of Rick Ross ‘ upcoming LP, but the Bawse isn’t as coldhearted as his album title may suggest. When it comes to former Maybach Music affiliate Pill , Rozay wishes the Atlanta MC all the best. “I’m a real dude and I’m a real boss and once you rep the MMG flag, I’ll never step on your feet; Imma give you a pass anyway,” Ross told MTV News correspondent Sway Calloway of Pill while at French Montana’s “Shot Caller” remix video shoot in Miami on Sunday. In December, P-I-Double L took to Twitter to vent about his label situation with Warner Music Group , blaming WMG for his lack of radio and television support. Because of his prominent appearance on Maybach Music’s Self Made Vol. 1 compilation, many believed that Pill was signed to Ross’ label , but in an exclusive interview with MTV News in January, Pill revealed that he was never technically signed to Rozay and that his deal went strictly through MMG’s parent company, Warner. “Pill’s situation was a special situation because he was already signed to Warner before I did my label deal at Warner. So when I did do my deal, it was a business opportunity that was presented where Pill could run with the team for a year,” Ross confirmed. “I took that opportunity. That year ran its course and it was pretty much up to Warner what decisions they wanted to make with Pill as an artist after that point. I think they made it.” Pill told MTV News in January that he was working on getting a release from Warner and made it clear that he had no problems with anyone in MMG personally — though he did say that he and Ross didn’t speak very often. “I ain’t got nothing against none of them, nobody. It’s just the situation don’t work,” Pill said matter-of-factly. “It’s cool with us, I don’t got nothing against Ross either. It’s just I don’t talk to him.” Some believed that Pill’s outspokenness would anger the Boss, but Rozay didn’t take any of it to heart. “He made sure he reached out to me and called me and clarified,” Ross said. “He expressed that in no way was he disrespecting the team or the brand, because it’s a great opportunity and a great look.” As far as why the “Trap Goin’ Ham” rapper’s situation didn’t work out, Ross thought the young MC just needed a hit record and a little luck to build his momentum. He used the success of MMG’s Meek Mill and Wale to exemplify his point. “Certain things happen for certain people at certain times and none of us could really predict that,” he explained. “I couldn’t predict that Meek Mill would bring ‘Ima Boss’ to me or we couldn’t predict that Wale would bring ‘That Way.’ ” Even though Pill and WMG are now going their separate ways, Ross is looking forward to seeing his former Maybach affiliate rack up a win. “Hopefully, in the future he’ll bring him a hit record, and get him some paper and do his thing,” he said. “I wish him much success.” What do you hope to see from Pill in the future?
