The nominees for this year’s Golden Globes were announced this morning in Hollywood, and for Skin fans it was a confirmation that, for onscreen nudity, cable is where (t)it’s at. Out of this year’s Best Picture nominees, only My Week with Marilyn featured nudity ( and that was a body double ), but the Best Actress in a Motion Picture category fared somewhat better. Rooney Mara was nominated for her nude turn in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (details coming next week) along with Glenn Close for the gender-bending drama Albert Nobbs (which you probably haven’t heard of, but is nude on Mr. Skin!). Plus, The Skin I Live In , featuring Elena Anaya nude, was also nominated for Best Foreign Language Feature. Meanwhile in the TV categories, all five of the Best Television Series- Drama nominees featured nudity (or at least Alexandra Breckenridge in a French maid outfit): American Horror Story , Boardwalk Empire , Boss , Game of Thrones , and Homeland all received nods, and are all nude at Mr. Skin. Interestingly, however, none of the Best Actress nominees in the TV categories were also nominudes [ nude in the role they were nominated for- SC ], save for Kate Winslet and Evan Rachel Wood , who were nominated for their highly pierce-able performances in Mildred Pierce . The people have spoken, and MGK has beat out Lil Twist and Mac Miller in MTV News’ annual poll. Since he first began to make noise with his 2010 mixtape Lace Up, Machine Gun Kelly has worked his way into hip-hop’s collective consciousness. It wasn’t always pretty (see MGK’s August flash-mob arrest or his tiff with Yelawolf ), but it’s always been passionate. Now, thanks to that passion, Machine Gun Kelly can stand alone as MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011, it was revealed on “RapFix Live.” The competition was tough, and ever since the fan-driven Hottest Breakthrough poll opened on the RapFix blog last week, Kells was jockeying for the #1 position, fighting off Lil Twist and Mac Miller. A$AP Rocky, Future, French Montana, Freddie Gibbs, Kendrick Lamar, Meek Mill and Roscoe Dash were also in contention, but in the end, it was MGK who held the crown after hundreds of thousands of votes were tallied. When all the math was complete, MGK finished with 44 percent of the vote. Miller, whose Blue Slide Park debuted at #1 last month, was an early favorite. Twist, who finished in the #2 spot with 39 percent of the vote, proved to be MGK’s most formidable competition, thanks to his die-hard fans, Young Money team and best friend Justin Bieber, who all tweeted in support. In August, MGK appeared on “RapFix Live” and announced that he had signed with Diddy’s storied Bad Boy label, but rather than try to force him into the marketplace before his time, it was decided that the record company would continue to grow Kells organically. One of the things that first impressed Puff was Kelly’s dedicated fanbase, the same one that voted him the Hottest Breakthrough MC. “He has just such a movement, just hundreds and thousands of loyal fans that came from the place he came from in different parts of the country,” Diddy gushed during that “RapFix Live” appearance. “He wasn’t always the coolest kid in school, and just the process of growing up and the problems that they all encounter, they relate to him in such a way.” Influenced by DMX, Cleveland’s Machine Gun Kelly began battle-rapping around 2004 while he was still in high school. His passion grew from the corner ciphers to the studio, where he would lay tracks for his 2006 mixtape, Stamp of Approval. Back then, the MC (who got the Machine Gun part of his moniker because of his rapid-fire raps) was just getting his feet wet. In 2010, MGK would drop two mixtapes, 100 Words and Runnin’ and, his most notable tape, Lace Up. From there, the energetic spitter would develop his following thanks to his spirited live performances. From the very beginning of the competition, MGK had his eyes set on the #1 spot. “To be considered for the Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011, it’s obviously an honor, but I want to be the hottest. I’ve never been comfortable with sharing anything: I was a single child,” Machine Gun Kelly said on “RapFix Live.” Congratulations, MGK! Courted by the likes of Kanye West, Rick Ross and Jay-Z before joining Diddy, Montana earns a spot on MTV News’ 2011 list — vote now! By Steven Roberts French Montana Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News From the very moment the horns from the Lords of the Underground’s 1993 classic “Funky Child” sound until the moment that “Shorty got potential, I could be her sponsor” is heard, it was evident that French Montana had a hit on his hands with “Shot Caller.” Montana’s rise to prominence wasn’t that instantaneous, however. French Montana has been making noise on New York City’s underground rap scene since the early 2000s with his “Cocaine City” DVD series. Montana hoped the street series — showcasing interviews with big-name artists like T.I. and then unknowns like Nicki Minaj and Waka Flocka — would help broaden his fanbase in the same way other up-and-comers hoped their mixtapes did. He started gaining a lot of momentum later on in the decade, especially when he and Max B teamed up to drop the Coke Wave mixtape series. That momentum slowed when the Biggaveli was incarcerated, but Montana never stopped working. Fast-forward a couple of years and he found himself in the middle of speculation concerning whether he would sign with Kanye West, Diddy, Rick Ross or Jay-Z — two of the Bronx MC’s suitors, Rick Ross and Diddy, even hopped on the remix of “Shot Caller.” Wherever Montana landed, it was clear he wanted to be the main attraction. “I rather be LeBron in Cleveland than LeBron in Heat, so you read between the lines,” French said. “Wherever I go, I’d rather be the star than have to sit there. I worked this hard to get here so when I step in, I have to be the main focus.” On Thursday, French ended the speculation when he hit BET’s “106 & Park,” making a splashy appearance with his new label boss: Diddy. With rappers assembling crews like a game of dodgeball during PE, Montana promises to be a star as he puts his John Hancock — insert obligatory “pause” — on a Bad Boy contract. And with the already streets flooded with mixtape material and a joint LP with Waka on the way, there’s no question that the work ethic is there. Hottest Breakthrough MCs was established by MTV News in 2010 as a fan-driven initiative that spotlights, celebrates and cultivates new talent. MTV News chose a pool of young rappers and urged fans to vote for their favorite. When it was all said and done, Wiz Khalifa emerged as the Hottest Breakthrough of last year. The competition was tough, but the Taylor Gang General beat out runner-up Nicki Minaj, ATL group Travis Porter, Diggy Simmons and J. Cole. ‘I wasn’t given this power for no reason,’ rapper says in behind-the-scenes video filmed on Watch the Throne Tour. By Rob Markman Kanye West Photo: Getty Images No one knew what to expect back in October when online entertainment company VoyR announced that it would be partnering with Jay-Z and Kanye West ‘s Watch the Throne Tour to give “access to exclusive, inspirational and shareable stories” with live webcasts. Would fans get sneak peeks backstage? Would part of the concert be streamed in real time? How much of Jay and ‘Ye would we actually see? There were quite a few questions. Now, almost two months later, VoyR drops its first behind-the-scenes video. Kanye narrates the clip, which was recorded at one of the Throne’s November shows at Madison Square Garden in New York. “I always joked that I was like — OK, I’m doing music, but there is a bigger plan for me at a certain point. I wasn’t given this power for no reason and now it’s starting to open up,” ‘Ye says at the start. Yeezy continues to wax poetic about his mission in life, concluding that his goal is to inspire future world leaders who will go on to pay homage at the rapper’s funeral when he dies. All the while, West’s voice-over is coupled with concert footage of him emerging onto the MSG stage atop a four-sided video cube. “I’m on a pursuit of awesomeness,” West continues. “Excellence is the bare minimum.” VoyR charges a fee that grants fans access to a number of different episodes, but in this first video we see the Chi-Town MC backstage getting dressed for the night’s show. While wearing a black shirt, with the same Givenchy designs that appear in the Watch the Throne album insert, Kanye straps a chunky gold bracelet to his wrist, adjusts his in-ear monitor and laces up his Air Yeezy sneakers as he gets ready to hit the stage. The video mostly focuses on the “All of the Lights” MC, and we hardly see Jay at all. Instead we see Kanye marching through the concert halls, greeting visitors like famed Roc-A-Fella engineer Young Guru and Wu-Tang Clansman Raekwon. Hov does show up in one scene, marveling over one young fan’s haircut. The preteen, who made his way backstage, has a WTT logo shaved into his head. He is all smiles as Jay talks to him with Kanye, Bronx, New York, rapper French Montana and Hot 97’s Angie Martinez looking on. “Oh, you outta here, told you,” Jay says, laughing. Having just signed a lucrative party planning book deal , is the newly-single Pippa Middleton already playing the field again? That’s the rumor of the day. Merely one week after she and financier / crickter beau Alex Loudon called time on their relationship, she was seen back out with her ex George Percy. Then, she was spotted laughing it up at a tennis match with another fellow, who has yet to be identified (not for lack of trying by UK tabloids) … Pippa Middleton was actually accompanied by two mystery men at London’s ATP World Tour Final between Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfiried Tsonga over the weekend. At various points during the match, a smiling and laughing Pippa, donning a perfectly preppy navy blue blazer for the occasion, was seen chatting comfortably. And looking stylish and cute as ever, but that goes without saying. For now, reports suggest all her male companions seem to be of the simply-friends variety (she has been known to maintain those), but time will tell. Who should Pippa marry?
Could there be an international romance afoot? Bradley Cooper was spotted out on the streets of Paris with French actress Melanie Laurent on Monday night. The fluent French-speaking actor (and reigning Sexiest Man Alive ) looked cozy with his female companion after attending a short play together, People says. Cooper and Laurent, who had roles in Inglourious Basterds and the more recent film Beginners , were bundled up and looked deep in conversation at times. A source says Cooper and Laurent are longtime friends … and perhaps more? Since his breakup with Renee Zellweger, Coop has been linked to Jennifer Aniston, Scarlett Johansson, Olivia Wilde and most recently Jennifer Lopez. It was probably just a matter of time before French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius broke through in the United States: His OSS 117 diptych of spy spoofs had already acquired something of an international audience, and his curiosity about Hollywood has grown alongside his reputation. But no one — least of all Hazanavicius himself — likely foresaw him breaking through with The Artist .
A little over six months ago, before The Artist premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, it might have been unthinkable to foresee what has since evolved into a very real possibility: Jean Dujardin, a bona fide movie star in his native France but relative unknown in the United States, is as likely as any contender to date to win an Academy Award for Best Actor. Which would be surprising enough without The Artist being a black-and-white French import — a silent black-and-white French import.
