But the pop-heavy LP is ‘a lot better than how we planned,’ Nicki’s pal-turned-co-executive producer Safaree ‘SB’ Samuels tells MTV News. By Sowmya Krishnamurthy, with reporting by Rob Markman Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded Photo: Universal Nicki Minaj ‘s right-hand man Safaree “SB” Samuels took on another role for his longtime friend when he signed on as a co-executive producer on her sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. When MTV News caught up with SB, he explained how he made sure everything from “A to Z was done.” Samuels said his tasks on the project included scouting for beats and keeping in touch with producers to make sure deadlines were met. When asked how he helped Nicki to strike a balance between hip-hop and pop, SB revealed that the album was initially skewed toward rap. “In the beginning, we was gonna make it some rap spittin’ sh– and it was going to have a couple of songs that were going to be the ‘Super Bass’-es and joints like that,” he revealed. “But it ended up working out a lot better than how we planned.” SB went on to gush about working with Hit Boy, whose production highlights include Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “N—as in Paris.” After hearing just one beat, both Nicki and SB thought “We need more!” Hit Boy sent around six great beats, and they decided on two for the songs “Come on a Cone” and “I Am Your Leader,” which features Cam’ron and Rick Ross. (Incidentally, those are both SB’s favorites on the album.) But on the topic of crossover appeal and whether Nicki has deserted her rap roots , SB couldn’t disagree more. “She’s still doing her rap sh–, she’s still doing her crossover sh–,” he said. “When you a star, you a star. You can’t deny it.” Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded debuted at #1 this week, selling 253,000 copies in its first week on the Billboard albums chart. The stirring 2009 documentary Waking Sleeping Beauty took us behind the scenes at Disney Animation to reveal what it’s like when good things happen to good people. But before that, there was The Sweatbox , the 2002 doc that exposed how bad things happen to good people at the notoriously demanding studio — a revelation that virtually ensured the film would never see the light of day. The crackdown worked once and may yet work in the future, but for now, YouTube has all 95 unfinished minutes available for a rare look. John-Paul Davidson and Trudie Styler were granted full access to the Disney process — the dark-arts cauldron comprising writers, directors, animators and executives — as it applied to the doomed project Kingdom of the Sun . The results featured below aren’t especially flattering (particularly to the executives), and Styler’s husband Sting walks his customary line between introspective and pretentious, but as a cautionary tale of snuffed-out Hollywood idealism alone, this one’s worth viewing. A new track from Minaj’s highly-anticipated album, Pink Friday: Roman Uploaded , has leaked, featuring Brown on backing vocals. Nicki announces 15 European dates for her Pink Friday Tour beginning June 8 in Stockholm, Sweden. On Monday morning (March 19), Nicki Minaj took to Twitter to announce 15 European dates for her Pink Friday Tour. So far it looks like the Young Money MC will start her trek on June 8 at the Annexet in Stockholm, Sweden. After that, she will touch Norway, Denmark, France, Italy and London for 15 dates. The presale for Nicki’s Oslo, Norway, date began Monday, and tickets to the Stockholm show will be pre-sold Tuesday. Tickets for subsequent shows will go on sale in the coming weeks. The Harajuku Barbie’s sophomore LP Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded is scheduled to be released on April 3. On Friday, Nicki released the track list for the album and revealed collaborations with Chris Brown, Nas, Cam’ron, Rick Ross and of course her Young Money cohorts Lil Wayne and Drake. “April 3 is gonna be a doozy. Here’s a doozy to add to the annals of great PR stunts gone wrong: Last Friday, Woody Harrelson took to Reddit to promote his latest film, Oren Moverman’s Rampart , in which he gives a pretty terrific and tough performance as a corrupt L.A. cop. Harrelson’s been an open book to the world in the past, so why not sit him down for a session of “Ask Me Anything” with the users of the internet’s arguably most powerful (and famously no bullshit-taking) community? Well, because it can go very, very wrong . As when Reddit user AndyRooney asked Harrelson about a rumored onetime tryst with a high school student at a prom in L.A. “I swear this is a true story. I went to a high school in LA and you crashed our prom after party (Universal Hilton). You ended up taking the virginity of a girl named Roseanne. You didn’t call her afterwards. She cried a lot. Do you remember any of this and can confirm or have you been so knee deep in hollywood pooty for so long that this qualifies as a mere blip?” Harrelson refuted the claim and attempted to move on in the AMA chat, but things just were not going his way. For starters, Redditers became testy when the actor kept directing his answers toward Rampart — a trick employed by any actor or filmmaker or famous person who has something specific to promote. Media training, people! Well, it might’ve worked on the late night talk show circuit, but it didn’t fly this time; Harrelson fled the chat as users erupted over his using the open channel of AMA to pimp a product, his handlers reportedly flipped out , and the rest has made history among spectacular press flame-outs in recent memory. The victim in all of this, and I’m not talking about some 18-year-old young lady who may or may not have had a fling with an actor at prom, is the film itself — Rampart is Moverman’s sophomore feature, an intense character study filled with noteworthy turns by Harrelson and his castmates (including Brie Larson, near unrecognizable as Harrelson’s rebellious teenage daughter). Following the critical success of Moverman’s debut film The Messenger , a sensitively observed drama co-starring Harrelson and Ben Foster (who also appears in Rampart ), the cop drama hits theaters this Friday and needs all the attention it can garner. And truth be told, it deserves to be seen. But this kind of attention isn’t helpful to anyone except maybe the Reddit community, which holds on to their reputation as an iconoclastic, no-fools-suffering information exchange on the internet. Reddit’s “Ask Me Anything,” meanwhile, remains a brilliant way for certain celebrities to interact openly and candidly with internet denizens. But publicists — if you do expose your clients to the wonders of Reddit, at least make sure they know what they’re in for.
