Two Minnesota Teens Shot And Killed During Robbery…Homeowner’s Claiming Self-Defense

The shooter’s being charged with second-degree murder as he’s claiming self-defense; Minnesota law allows people to use deadly force when protecting their homes. According to The Daily Mail , family-members and friends are defending the two teens: Friends and family have expressed their outrage over the deaths of two popular students shot by a homeowner while they robbed his home – as he revealed he fired ‘more shots than he needed to’. The bodies of cousins Haile Kifer, 18, and Nicholas Brady Schaeffel, 17, were found in Byron Smith’s basement in Little Falls, Minnesota on Friday – the day after they were shot dead on Thanksgiving. When police arrived at his home after reports of suspicious activity, Smith, 64, confessed to shooting the teenagers repeatedly and stashing their bodies after they broke into his home, authorities said. On Monday, he was charged with second-degree murder and police revealed he told them he fired more shots than necessary after his gun jammed and Kifer laughed at him. While Minnesota law stipulates people are allowed to use deadly force when defending their homes, relatives, friends, police and prosecutors claimed Smith reacted too drastically by killing them. A person has every right to defend themselves and their homes, even employing deadly force if necessary,’ Morrison County Sheriff Michel Wetzel said. ‘Circumstances of this case however, led deputies to believe that Smith went beyond that point.’ In a criminal complaint, Smith said he was in the basement of his home when he heard a window breaking and footsteps. Fearful of other recent break-ins, he shot Schaeffel when he came into view. When the teenager tumbled down the stars, Smith shot him in the face as he lay on the floor, looking up. He dragged the body into his workshop and then sat in the chair, the complaint said. When Kifer began walking down the stairs, he shot her and she fell down the stairs. He tried to shoot her again with his rifle, but the gun jammed and Kifer laughed at him, the complaint noted. ‘If you’re trying to shoot somebody and they laugh at you, you go again,’ Smith, 64, told investigators, according to a criminal complaint filed Monday. He then shot her several times in the chest with a .22-caliber revolver, dragged her next to her cousin, and with as she gasped for air, fired a shot under her chin ‘up into the cranium’. ‘Smith described it as “a good clean finishing shot”,’ according to the compliant, and acknowledged he had fired ‘more shots than (he) needed to’. Smith said he left the bodies in his home overnight before calling a neighbor to ask if he knew a good lawyer. He later asked the neighbor to contact police. ‘Mr. Smith intentionally killed two teenagers in his home in a matter that goes well beyond self-defense,’ Morrison County Attorney Brian Middendorf said at the hearing. ‘They were just really great people,’ friend Rachel Stauffer, 15, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. ‘They could make anyone laugh.’ Further insight into the lives of the cousins was given by Brady’s sister, Crystal Shaeffel, as she visited Smith’s home and spoke with his brother. ‘They were 17 and 18 years old, and didn’t need to die,’ she told Bruce Smith. ‘That all depends on your perspective,’ he responded, referring to a series of break-ins his brother had endured. In one in October, thieves stole $10,000 worth of guns and electronics, he said. But Shaeffel insisted that her brother had no need to turn to burglary, as he made good money working for their father’s tree-trimming business. She added that her cousin, who had undergone treatment for substance abuse, could have been after pills from the home. Yes, she had an addiction problem and stuff, but that doesn’t mean she deserves to get murdered at 18 years old,’ Shaeffel said. ‘I understand they came there to rob them, or whatever, but shoot them in the shoulder and call the cops.’ SMH…what do you think about the teens actions vs. Smith’s claim of self-defense? Alex Gibney On What The Pope Knew (And Why He Did Nothing) In ‘Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence In The House of God’

Sundays are a good time for soul-searching — which makes it a good time to check in with filmmaker Alex Gibney , whose chilling documentary about sexual abuse in the Catholic church,   Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God ,  is a must-see for anyone interested in the subject as well as the larger issue of what happens when religion becomes big business.   Gibney’s documentary, which is in its second week of theatrical release and will run on HBO in February, begins with the headlines-making case of Father Lawrence Murphy, who, in a letter to the Vatican in 1998, admitted to abusing some 200 boys since the 1950s at the St. John’s School for the Deaf in St. Francis, Wisconsin. Although the Vatican had been aware of Murphy’s actions since 1963, he was never defrocked and, in fact, was allowed to remain at the school until 1974 (when he was transferred). Mea Maxima Culpa , which translates to “My Most Grievous Fault,” takes Gibney all the way to the Vatican, and in this interview, the filmmaker talks about the surprisingly integral roles that the late Pope John Paul II and his successor Pope Benedict XVI (then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger) played in this tragic tale as well as his doubts that the church will ever openly confront this issue in a way that will bring some measure of peace to its many victims. Movieline: After seeing Mea Maxima Culpa , I thought that it shares a theme with Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer . On one level, this is about a giant corporation quashing someone those who dare to challenge its ethics. Gibney: That’s right. It’s an abuse of power of sorts. The Vatican is a corporation. It’s religion that’s become a corporation and therein lays the rub. The Vatican has become too seduced by its own power and money. Vatican City is its own state. What struck me about Mea Maxima Culpa  is the arrogance that the church has shown towards those who have suffered sexual abuse at the hands of Catholic priests. For somebody like Pope Benedict, I don’t think it’s an arrogance born of malice. I think that the hierarchy intuits itself as a kind of holy order, which is innately better than everyone else and, therefore, can’t fathom the idea of punishing one of its own. It’s like ratting on a family member. If you find out a brother has committed a crime, you don’t go running to the police. But once you’ve started to believe your own hype, even if it’s illogical hype, it can take you to some dark places. And then you’re in the position of maintaining the illusion that you have done nothing wrong, which entails silencing anyone who says otherwise. I think many of these people are true believers — even somebody as sick as Father Murphy: In those therapist’s notes he talks about why he did what he did with those children. He said, “Well, I was taking their sins upon myself.” Doesn’t he also say that he was “fixing” rampant homosexuality at the St. John’s School for the Deaf by having sex with the students there? Right. “I was fixing it.” I think rationalizations like that are made because people like Murphy believe in their essential holiness. It’s not necessarily Machiavellian where they’re sitting there thinking, “Okay, here’s the strategy. We shall employ X, Y, or Z.” Although recently, I do think there’s some of that as well. Tell me what’s going on with Cardinal Dolan , for example, and his maneuvers with the cemetery fund in Milwaukee. I wasn’t aware of that until I saw your film. Wasn’t that wild? After the deaf victims spend years trying to hold Murphy to account, imagine the vicious irony of the idea that when they petition the church for redress, the church moves its money into the cemetery account so it can continue to protect the grave of Father Murphy over and above the victims. There’s also remarkable home-video footage you use in which a group of the deaf men confront Murphy, and his caretaker, who knows sign language, is telling one of the men that he should drop this because he’s a Catholic above all. It’s Murphy’s helper. She had been a helper at the school and, yes, she’s signing furiously saying you are Catholic, you are Catholic. As if to say, you know, the church is more important. You can cut this guy some slack because we don’t want the enemies of the church to have access to any of this information. Put your religion ahead of your petty grievances — the fact that you and so many other children have been abused. Petty. Right. There’s a technical aspect of the film that I wanted to ask you about:  Your interviews with the deaf men, who are using sign language to communicate, have an almost 3D quality. Yeah, we did something. We used a variable shutter — it’s what Spielberg used in Saving Private Ryan — so that there’s a kind of flutter to the hands that makes them resonate more. It does. I really felt the emotion and the pain behind their gestures. We actually shot those interviews with three, sometimes four cameras because we wanted to have one camera that took a complete record of their signing, which included their facial gestures and their hands. We wanted another camera that was more impressionistic in terms of being able to move in from the face to the hands,  and so forth. We wanted a side angle, of course, and sometimes we would use a fourth camera just to get more details because we really wanted to bring that world to life for the hearing audience. There’s something so rich about their language that it’s very powerful to capture, particularly because their deafness was so much at the heart of this story. They were the voices that could not be heard. Yet, they made themselves heard by dint of their determination. You also use recreations in Mea Maxima Culpa to depict aspects of the Father Murphy story. What led to your decision to take that route? Frankly I was a little nervous about it. We shot some pretty extensive recreations on this one. I hate that word — recreation — but it just seemed that there’s something so poignant about the way Murphy entered that dorm room. I wanted to capture that hallucinatory quality, because the aspect of the story that most people found so haunting is that these children couldn’t hear him coming. That’s how vulnerable they were. Like the fox in the henhouse, he had them available to him at any time. You quote a letter from one of Murphy’s victims in which he says that he used to lay in bed shaking at night. Yeah, because you never knew when he was going to come in and touch you or one of your friends. In the film, you indicate that while Pope John Paul II was on his deathbed, the future Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Ratzinger, who oversaw all of the sex abuse cases at the Vatican, sent his chief prosecutor to New York and Mexico City to gather evidence about alleged sexual abuses by Marcial Maciel Degollado , who ran the Legion of Christ and raised a lot of money for the Vatican. As John Paul is dying, Cardinal Ratzinger, who is the head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, which oversees all of the sexual abuse cases, sends his chief prosecutor to New York and Mexico City to take testimony so they can build a case against Maciel. Ratzinger was legitimately furious at Maciel, but Maciel had very powerful protectors, notably John Paul and Cardinal Angelo Sodano. Ratzinger becomes Pope but Maciel was never tried under canonical law. It shows that — Even the Pope is not all powerful. That was a revelation to me. That is in essence the banality of evil. Pope Benedict has to play these political games instead of assuming the mantle of God and rendering punishment to somebody. He doesn’t. We don’t know if some kind of deal was cut by Sodano, or if Benedict was simply doing an Obama-like thing and saying we’re going to go forward, not backwards.

RonysPhotobooth Covers Selena Gomez Adidas Event for DrunkenStepfather of the Day

Arguably the best photographer in LA…if not the world, RonysPhotobooth ….a good friend of ours here at DrunkenStepfather…despite our constant teasing of his friends…. Well he sent one of his crew to a media event DrunkenStepfather was finally invited to…and not only showed up to…but brought the best fucking photographers in the city to….because we may be ghetto, but we’re fucking awesome…. I feel kinda bad that everyone went to the trouble to go to this announcement…that Selena Gomez just signed a 3 year deal as guest designer for Adidas….. I was hoping the event, that we weren’t given much info about, was going to be for a crotchless panty collection….not that Beiber is out of the picture and she can finally have sex… Either way, thanks to the crew at RonysPhotobooth for being so lovely….and I’m looking forward to more fun times like these…even if they weren’t fun for anyone involved….

At Least She’s Trying: Karrueche Previews New Clothing Line “The Kill”…Thoughts?

Karrueche Launches New Clothing Brand ‘The Kill’ It looks like our favorite scorned woman, Karrueche has a contingency plan for the inevitability that Chris Brown will leave her cold, dark and lonely in a back alley somewhere. Her backup plan is to put together a clothing company that will allow her to make a little bread on the side. The company is called The Kill (as in “Chris Brown, I’ll kill yo a$$ if you leave me!!!” maybe?). Anyway, we’re sure you can’t wait to see what her gear looks like, so she took to Instagram to show off the goods. Plus, a few of her friends (Christina Milian and Chris Brown) were spotted rocking the gear, too. The line launches on 12-12-12, So take a look and see if you’d cop or not.

Let me start off  by saying I never thought I’d be writing a My…

Let me start off  by saying I never thought I’d be writing a My Bieber Experience, and let me also say I am so thankful that I am now able to! My friend and I bought tickets in May 2012 for the Believe Tour in Louisville, on Nov 2, 2012.  We bought a VIP package (without M&G) so we had great seats. I was so happy and thankful for that opportunity, I was SURE they’d sell out! Then we found out about the contest on bieberfever.com, so we decided to enter.  We never imagined we’d win, but the day before the show we got an email saying we won meet and greet passes! I was shaking and screaming running around my house, calling everyone I knew! The rest of the night I kept saying, “Is this real life?” and randomly screaming because I still couldn’t register the fact that I was meeting Justin Bieber.  My mom was so annoyed. So the day of the concert we got to the arena, got our wristbands, and made our way inside for the M&G. My friend spotted Kenny so I yelled, “Hey Kenny! You follow me on Twitter!” and waved like a fool.  He nodded and smiled back.  We then waited in the line for the M&G, which went fairly fast and Dan Kanter came out during it but I didn’t get a picture, but I did say hi and he asked if we were excited for the show.  Finally it was OUR turn! We were in groups of 6, and my friend and I ended up being stuck on the end but that’s okay. When Kenny opened the curtain he remembered me and asked for a high five and asked me my name. Then I handed Fredo two letters from my friends (@AmaniforSPCA and @BlessKidrauhl). He later tweeted them after reading the letters…yay! We took the picture, and while walking out I was the last one.  I kind of just stared at Justin because I was in shock, like, he’s real, he’s two feet from me. He looked so sad which made me sad. I smiled like an idiot and waved and he smiled and waved back and said “I hope you enjoy the show!” and I replied, “OH I will!” and he said, “Oh I KNOW you will!” and I felt like he was flirting with me haha maybe not but a girl can dream, right? I couldn’t believe Justin Bieber just spoke to me to me! I screamed when we walked outside and was so sad it was over so fast.   While we were waiting in out seats for the show tos start, I DMed Kenny on Twitter. He responded to me the next night, Saturday . I was in shock at that, too but so happy! Then the concert came. We were 11 th row from the stage. I saw Grandpa Bruce and took pics of him, and I saw Grandma Diane and took her pic. Fredo and Allison walked by a few times to find the OLLG.  Eventually Kenny came out and stood with Bruce to watch Justin.  I waved at Kenny and he smiled and waved back, he remembered me! Later on, Fredo was standing over there too, and I smiled and waved at him and he smiled and nodded. Nick Demoura walked by me and I smiled and waved, once again, and he nodded and smiled.  I felt kind of like a crazy person waving and smiling to the team any chance I got but I knew it was my only opportunity to do it, so I may as well look crazy than regret NOT saying hi to them. It was one of the best days/nights of my entire life. I will never forget how I felt, all thanks to Justin and his music, and Justin’s amazing team.  It is so cliché but TRULY, Never Say Never, because it could happen to you.  I had to wait a couple years but my opportunity arose, and it was nothing short of amazing! @lyssxx0 Follow this link: Let me start off  by saying I never thought I’d be writing a My…

On  October 26th, 2012 me and my friend Carley drove four hours up to Kansas City to go see Justin. I have been an extremely dedicated Belieber for years and my dream was finally coming true. I knew it was going to be great but I was never expecting what would end up happening. We arrived at the hotel around noon and I finally got to meet my best friends from Twitter for the first time in person. We knew Justin and his crew were staying at our hotel because his buses were parked outside and there were tons of girl trying to get in. I was able to get me and my friends into the hotel but more girls ended up sneaking in later. Some of the girls had seen Justin’s grandparents earlier that morning so I knew there was hope to see someone but I still thought my chances were slim. Kenny tweeted that he was going to go work out before heading to the Sprint Center so we went down to the hotel gym to see if he was there . One of the girls that was there was wearing workout clothes so she used my key and went in to go check. But she never came out so I got frustrated and went in myself. I hadn’t taken a full five steps when I saw Kenny laying on the ground doing sit ups . And I got so nervous I just turned around and ran back into the hall and fell on the ground. I couldn’t believe I actually saw Kenny. The door to the  gym opened and a really buff guy came out who I had never seen before (I later found out he is Justins new bodyguard). He told us that we needed to leave and I told him my friend was in there still and he tried to tell me that there were no girls in there. We argued for about 5 minutes but I was still very respectful to him and told him sorry to end it and he said, ‘I don’t care if you’re sorry.’ He is probably actually really nice but he wasn’t very nice to me. After that we left and went back up to the lobby. We were just standing there when Bruce and Diane just walked out of a hallway! I asked them for a picture and Justin’s grandma apologized and said there were too many people. They went out to the bus and Bruce didn’t get on! He said, ‘Grandma is tired but I will still take pictures with you!’ So he was taking pictures with everyone and when I asked for mine he said, “Of course sweetie!” His Canadian accent was so cute! We then went back into the lobby and were only there a couple minutes when someone spotted Scrappy in the bar! One of the managers went up to us and told us we weren’t allowed in because none of us were 21 but we just went in anyway and got a few blurry pictures and got to say hello! After Scrappy left, we were standing there for awhile when some of the hotel staff came and checked for room keys and kicked some people out. Some luggage came down stairs and some of Fredos camera equipment was on it! They then said that there were ‘important clients’ about to come down and we needed to stand to the side and not take our phone out and if they saw a phone they would kick us out. We did what we were told and soon Dan Kanter walked in the room! Someone asked him for a picture but the manager lady yelled, “No pictures!” so Dan was like, “Their rule. Not mine.” He told us he had to go check out and went over to the front desk. After he was done he came back and had a long conversation with us! We talked about food and the show and how he liked Kansas City. In the middle of us talking, Alfredo and Kenny walked out of the elevator! We screamed and they just waved and hurried out the door to get into a taxi. Dan soon left also. Pretty soon Allison walked by and waved to us while on the phone. Then Allison walked by holding PAC’s cage!!! We were all like “AWW” and she laughed. We waited a while longer but the buses left and someone came out and basically told us everyone was gone. Me and my friend went back into our room to get ready and I had just gotten changed when my friend who was still in the lobby texted me “He’s still here!!!!” We literally ran out the hotel room door and back to the lobby to find out that the manager said he ‘might’ still be here. Which is basically saying he was because if he wasn’t, they would have told us to leave. We stood in the lobby for awhile before deciding to go downstairs and check the parking garage. No one was down there so we went back to the elevator and were deciding what to do when my friend Sydney’s mom who was still in the lobby, texted her that “They are up here!”  All like 15 of us jumped into the elevator screaming out heads off. When we got up there Kenny, Fredo, and the mean body guard from earlier were standing there checking out. Apparently they had just gone to lunch earlier. Kenny came over to us and took pictures with all of us while Alfredo and the other guy waved and hurried out. Kenny was even sweet enough to take extra pictures with my little sister and my friend’s sister who were to short to be seen in the first one . After they left we assumed everyone was gone and me and Carley needed to go get ready for the meet and greet. We got to the Sprint Center an hour early. We went up to the line and while we were waiting for Justin I suddenly got extremely nervous. When they pulled back the curtain for the girls in front of us, I noticed that it was the guy that chewed us out earlier at the hotel . I know he remembered us too because he did a double take and then stared at me. When it was our turn I legit went into shock. All I could do was stare at Justin’s beautiful face. He was laughing at something Alfredo said. I don’t think I will ever be able to describe how perfect he is in person. He was glowing and he looked like an angel. Justin had his arms already open for us to step into so we did and before the picture he gave me a side hug. Justin was trying to stop his laughing for the picture so he ended up with cutest smirk. Right after the flash went off he started giggling again and said something but honestly I was so out of it I don’t even know what he said. I just remember thinking in my head ‘Oh my goodness that’s Justin’s voice.’ They told us our turn was over and my friend yelled over her shoulder that she loved Justin and said goodbye to Fredo. I realized I looked like an idiot not saying a word because I was in so much shock so I turned around before walking out the curtain and I said ‘I love you so much Justin!!’ and Justin smiled and took a step forward saying ‘I love you too!’ in the cutest little voice. I then said ‘Hi Fredo!!!’ and he waved with the biggest smile. I stepped out of the curtain and they handed me this autographed thing and I instantly started bawling. I just couldn’t believe that just happened. I know that nobody is perfect but he has to be pretty dang close. I cried for like an hour until we needed to start finding our way into the actual concert. We got into the arena and me and Carley were extremely fortunate to get front row!! I just looked around in awe for awhile. I don’t think any Belieber can describe that feeling you get as the countdown goes to 0. It’s was in all honesty one of the happiest moments I’ve ever had. Justin is an amazing performer. I’ve always known that but I guess you just get a whole new perspective for it when you actually get to see it. He was born to do this and I couldn’t be more proud. I finally felt like I understood how talented he truly is and how far he has come. During OLLG we were just standing there watching Justin serenade the girl when someone ran in front of us on the other side of the barrier. And both me and Carley knew it was Alfredo. We waited for him to come back after taking pictures and when he did I leaned over the barrier and called his name. He took his hood off an stopped directly in front of me. I was completely taken off guard I thought he would maybe wave but definitely never this. He grabbed my hand that was resting on the barrier and he didn’t shake it – but he intertwined our fingers and just held my hand and got really close to my face and just smiled there for about 15 seconds. He then did the same thing to my friend before putting his hood back up and running off. My friend started crying for the first time that night which just made me break down and cry. We were basically on the floor crying in the middle of the concert and everyone around us just looked at us like we were freaks cause it was the most random time to cry. I just couldn’t believe that happened. I have sat alone in my room dreaming for years and my dream became a reality. Justin has helped me through so much in personal life and I know he has helped so many others also. I wish he could understand what he does for people. He saves them without even knowing it. I just want to say to everyone who sits in there room like I did dreaming about the day that you get to meet Justin to just have faith. Because when it finally happens it is all completely worth it. All the stress I twitter drama, the late night Bieber blasting, everything. It’s all worth it just to let him know that you love him and to know that he loves you back and to see the talent he really has. It will happen to you. You just have to believe. -Sterling Herzik (@ForeverMyRauhl) More here: On  October 26th, 2012 me and my friend Carley drove four hours…
