On Shaun King And The Moment I Found Out That I’m Black

I’m Creole. Which means I’m a Black person from New Orleans who’s got so many things mixed around in my family history that it’s easy to confuse me as a White guy. There’s a substantial population in Louisiana that looks just like me. They have curly hair, light eyes and aren’t much darker than a White person who spent a week in Barbados. I have three half-sisters. One is my complexion. Two are darker. I have cousins who are fair-skinned. I have cousins who are brown. I have uncles and aunts who have been called White their whole lives. So my house would look like it’s full of a racially ambiguous group of people every Thanksgiving. For that reason, I had no concept of race growing up. I did’t even know race was a thing because I didn’t differentiate myself from anyone as a kid. When I walked outside I saw all shades of people who look like they could be in my family. Then I moved to Mississippi. My family moved to Mississippi when I was six years old and my parents enrolled me into a private, all-Black school with a strong focus on Black pride and education about our history. So naturally I was hit with the big question on my first day of school: are you Black or White? It was the first time I’d heard the question and I had no clue how to answer. I mean, I used yellow crayons when I drew myself. And as I contemplated my answer, I looked around and saw that all the kids were considerably darker than I was. I felt like, for the first time ever, I was seeing skin color. I still didn’t understand race yet, but I saw people that I didn’t think looked like me. So I answered: “I’m White, I guess.” So for a whole school day, I was a barely-literate, elementary-aged reverse Rachel Dolezal. Then recess came, and word had spread that there was a White kid on the playground. This was 1992 and White Men Can’t Jump was fresh on everyone’s minds. Naturally, when I hit the basketball court, a few of the kids decided to chant that damned movie title at me. To no end. I can still picture the kid behind the basketball goal yelling “White men can’t jump” at me while I went up for layups. I didn’t want to be White anymore. That night my dad caught me crying to myself at the grocery store. “They yelled ‘White Men Can’t Jump’ at me at school today!” I remember crying to him about it. (My dad still thinks this story is hilarious, by the way, and will bring this story up within two minutes of talking to anyone I know.) That night, my parents explained to me that I am in fact Black. They showed me Eyes On The Prize . I watched videos of my dad speaking at his friends’ funerals. I saw how White people saw me. A flood of memories I didn’t know I had came swarming to the front my mind. I remember crying that night to my dad that I thought the KKK would come and kill him. Over the course of a few hours, I realized my Blackness and what that meant about my life in America. Again, I was six. For a lot of Black people, we sort of know about our Blackness from birth and don’t get that moment of clarity about our ethnicity all at one time. For others, we have this jarring moment where we have to apply these definitions to our existences all at once. Of course, as I learn about what Blackness truly means, I understand what it means to love myself and the blessings that come from being Black. I can still pull up these memories of discovering my Blackness like it happened yesterday. And I can’t imagine what Shaun King is going through right now as he’s had to relive similar moments in tandem with embarrassing skeletons in his family’s closet. According to King, he found out he was Black at the same time he found out that his dad wasn’t his real father. And he’s had to relive this moment in front of every Twitter account and Facebook status’ watchful eye. His race and family history has become a public spectacle that’s been picked apart for the last 72 hours. He’s had to justify his Blackness and relive a moment of trauma because of a desire to discredit his contributions to #BlackLivesMatter. (And I’m not sure this is even something conservatives try to dig up if not for Rachel Dolezal. So shout out to her for that. Thanks.) Being Black is beautiful and I wouldn’t have it any other way. My Blackness is a gift and I love every moment of it. But that moment you feel the weight of your Blackness all at once brings its own level of trauma. That’s why when I read Their Eyes Were Watching God I think about the moment Janie realizes she’s Black and how it defined the rest of her life: So when we looked at depicture and everybody got pointed out there wasn’t nobody left except a real dark little girl with long hair standing by Eleanor. Dat’s where Ah wuz s’posed to be, but Ah couldn’t recognize dat dark child as me. So Ah ast, ‘where is me? Ah don’t see me.’ Everybody laughed, even Mr. Washburn. Miss Nellie, de Mama of de chillun who come back home after her husband dead, she pointed to de dark one and said, ‘Dat’s you, Alphabet, don’t you know yo’ ownself?’ Dey all useter call me Alphabet ‘cause so many people had done named me different names. Ah looked at de picture a long time and seen it was mah dress and mah hair so Ah said: ’Aw, aw! Ah’m colored!’” (2.3-8) I’ve always felt that Janie spent the rest of the book looking to reclaim the beauty she’d felt she lost the moment she realized she was Black. The trauma of finding out she was perceived as inferior led her to look for that vindication and acknowledgement of her beauty. Unfortunately, Blackness in America comes with trauma. But the beauty of Blackness is the ability to love ourselves despite how we’re trained to feel about our skin color. Shaun King found out about his Blackness in what had to have been one of the most trying moments of his life. And he’s embraced it to become one of the foremost voices to remind this country that we matter. Because he’s learned – like I’ve learned – that Blackness isn’t a burden. It’s not a curse. It’s not something to hide. It’s something to be proud of. And the defense of our Black lives is as important as any goal we’ll ever have in our lives.

Blue Lives Matter??? Texas Cops Share Response Photo To #BlackLivesMatter Protest Movement

Texas Cops Post Photo Response To Black Lives Matter Movement Two cops from Texas, the state responsible for two of the most recent senseless deaths of Black people at the hands of police or in police custody , have decided that they have their own message to send about the #BlackLivesMatter movement. But despite how utterly terrible it looks, they say it’s more about realizing that “not all cops are bad,” than counteracting the outrage. Via MailOnline : A black and a white police officer have staged their own powerful response to the Black Lives Matter. Chief Steven Jones and Officer Donald Givens from Trinity Police Department in Texas posed for an image with the message ‘His Life Matters’ scribbled on their hands, with arrows pointing at one another. The picture was taken in May and only shared a handful of times on Twitter, but over recent months it has been shared thousands of times. They were responding to the protest movement that sprung up after the highly publicized deaths of black Americans, including Michael Brown, Tamir Rice and Samuel DuBose. They were all shot and killed by white police officers. Chief Jones told Fox and Friends on Thursday: I don’t want to put down law enforcement all together, but … there’s so many things that are happening these days that sometimes we can’t stand behind officers that do bad things. However, the community and the nation can’t condemn every single officer based on the actions of a few.’ If you’re so concerned with the reckless actions of “a few,” make some changes instead of posting “don’t judge us” pics…ESPECIALLY piggybacking off a movement seeking to remember the fallen and demand change. SMH!

Man Violates Restraining Order by "Liking" Facebook Posts

A little thumbs up on Facebook turned into a huge thumbs down for a Pennsylvania man. Justin Bellanco, 26, was charged with contempt of court after he “liked” Facebook photos of a women who accused him of harassment. The woman, April Holland, obtained a restraining order against Bellanco.  She claimed that her 26-year-old ex-boyfriend was stalking and harassing both her and her friends. According to the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader, Holland, 24, reported that Bellanco even threatened to shoot her in the knee cap. On August 4, a Luzerne County Judge issued a restraining order against Bellanco, which forbade him from contacting Holland for a year. However, despite the restraining order, via Facebook, he “liked” 22 videos and photos on her Facebook page. Pittston, Pennsylvania, police claimed that by liking her Facebook videos and pics, he is in violation of the no-contact retraining order. Bellanco argued that he was unaware that liking Facebook photos and video was out of compliance with the judge’s order. This might be a good time for Holland to update her privacy settings. The couple is not unaccustomed to domestic disputes.  According to the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader, Bellanco once obtained a protection from abuse order against his ex-girlfriend. Reportedly, in April 2014, she tried to choke him during a domestic dispute.

Lucy Hale Creeper Creeping on her in V Magazine of the Day

Lucy Hale is probably the least Pretty Little Liar, that I assume is a teen show about sex in high school, but that I could be wrong about, because I don’t watch the show, but if I wrote the show, this would be the substitute teacher some of the boys want to fuck, because she’s hot for 40…and not one of the high school students because she looks 40.. This is a shoot for V magazine, because everyone wants to be fashion, and fashion wants to feature anyone who is a huge fucking star, because it’s good for business and social media following, that they can use to sell better ad campaigns with… So they sexed this thing up, it worked, and I relate to the creeper creeping in the background, because that’s usually my roll in most sexual encounters…often times from across the street with binoculars…because I’m a pervert… Does this put Lucy Hale on the map? I don’t know, but I like when all girls get semi-slutty, even the one who wasn’t cast for Springbreakers when all her friends were, probably because of the whole looking 40 thing… Who cares. Apparently I do because I posted it…but that’s just an illustion…I don’t know what else to do with myself…I’m in a prison I built myself and this is part of it…we call it internet purgatory. The highlight of these pics is Shay Mitchell, her co-star’s bikini selfie… The post Lucy Hale Creeper Creeping on her in V Magazine of the Day appeared first on DrunkenStepfather .

The Joys Of Being White: Police Fight With Family And Knock Woman Out [Video]

If they were black… A New York man says Suffolk County police in Long Island tackled him to the ground and attempted to delete footage of police brutality he had recorded but mistakenly removed the wrong file. Square-banner, 20-year-old Thomas Demint claims police have continued to harass and threaten him after the incident, prompting him to go public with the footage for fear of his own safety. Demint was on his way to work on May 21, 2014 when he spied his friends family being arrested by Suffolk County police in Center Moriches after officers responded to a 911 call reporting that an adult male was attempting suicide. When police arrived, officials say, officers attempted to administer aid to the suicidal man and his family intervened. In one of the most egregious parts of video, an officer is seen slinging a woman to the ground rendering her unconscious. “My mom’s knocked out,” one of the woman’s sons can be heard screaming. An officer also tased her, and in another part of the video, an officer can be seen punching her other son in the face. Demints attorney, Ken Mollins, says that as Demint was trying to leave the scene with the footage, three officers tackled him to the ground and charged him with obstruction. “My client was not aggressive, my client was standing there videotaping,” Mollins said. “This is clearly evidence of police brutality.” Suffolk County police said in a statement that Demint “interfered with officers by shouting obscenities toward police officers and paramedics as well as entering the scene several times after he was told not to.” “Mr. Demint’s actions diverted officers’ attention away from the suicidal man and Mr. Demint had to be physically escorted away from the scene,” the statement adds. “Mr. Demint was placed under arrest for Obstructing Governmental Administration and Resisting Arrest.” Since he recorded the footage Demint says he has been pulled over multiple times by officers that have made threatening statements like, “you’ll see me again, you can count on that.” Demint also says his phone was confiscated and kept it for weeks. “I was genuinely shocked,” Demint said. “I don’t regret taking the video but it did bring me alot of complications.” http://www.copblock.org/

SMH: 18-Year-Old Mom Who Put Dead Baby In Victoria’s Secret Shopping Bag Charged With Murder

Teen Mom Who Carried Dead In Shopping Bag Is Charged With Murder The teen mom caught with a dead newborn in a shopping bag in 2013 while allegedly shoplifting at a Victoria’s Secret was charged with murdering the baby boy on Thursday. Via NY Daily News : Tiona Rodriguez, 18, “carried out the murder of her newborn infant and then callously shoved him in a bag with the plan of — in her words — to ‘take this s— and dig a hole, put it somewhere, lol, then we go eat IHOP,’” prosecutor Rachel Ferrari said. She was quoting a text message Rodriguez sent at the teen’s arraignment on a second-degree murder charge. The charge, filed nearly two years after the baby’s death, stems from the Brooklyn teen’s bizarre Oct. 17, 2013 shoplifting arrest. She had been charged with lifting a $44.50 pair of skinny jeans from the Herald Square store one day after her baby was born. When security searched her bag to investigate the theft, they made the gruesome and heartbreaking discovery. Ferrari said the teen “became pregnant in early 2013 and told no one. She knew she would be in big trouble if her family found out. So, she made a plan to kill this baby,” and “began plotting weeks before he was born.” “She took steps to get ready, and on October 16, 2013, she woke up and knew that this was the day. She contacted a friend and went to her home in Queens, away from the prying eyes of her friends, her family, her community in Brooklyn,” Ferrari said. “She took a bag with her, and a change of clothes. And she went into her friend’s bathroom, turned on the tub, and gave birth to her baby. Ripping the cord with her bare hands.” Ferrari said Rodriguez’s baby was 8 pounds and was full term. What kind of sentence do you think this ain’t isht mom deserves?? NYDailyNews

Hulk Hogan Unleashes Gay Slurs in NEW Tape

Just days after Hulk Hogan’s racist tirade was exposed, new information is surfacing that suggest that the former WWE star isn’t just a racist.  He’s also homophobic. Hulk Hogan was caught on tape unleashing a disturbing tirade against the gay community. Radar Online and The Enquirer have reported that the same unauthorized sex tape that documented Hulk Hogan’s racist rant against black people has an previously unheard portion that features Hulk Hogan using homophobic slurs . On the video, Terry Bollea aka Hulk Hogan is heard discussing his VH1 reality show, Hogan Knows Best , with his sex tape partner Heather Clem.  Clem happens to be the wife of his former friend, Bubba “The Love Sponge” Clem. The conversation with Clem takes a quick turn when Hogan starts talking about the premise of the season four finale episode. “VH1 wanted me to do a big thing and go back to the house I grew up in,” Hulk says. “So we knock on the door,” he continues, “and a big f*g lives there now!” The 61-year-old wrestler continues with his homophobic diatribe: “This half gay was enamored with Linda,” he whines. Airing in October 2007, in the episode Hulk was seen visiting the Port Tampa house where he grew up and was raised by parents Peter and Ruth Bollea. The home’s new owner was nothing but kind to Hulk.  In fact, he even gave Hogan a small metal truck that he found in the garden when he moved it. The toy truck belonged to Hogan when he was little. If it wasn’t bad enough that he used homophobic slurs to attack the homeowner (who was nothing but kind to him), Hogan even bashes Linda, his wife at the time. As Bubba enters the room, Hulk says, “Dude, the only thing I will ever ask of you … I don’t know how you will pull this off … is, if I am ever on my death bed, you cannot let Linda come and visit me.” At the time of the audio recording, Linda had not filed for divorce.  But it is evident by Hulk’s comments that their marriage was already over. He goes on to mention his Las Vegas home that he purchased for $4.25 million.  The property appreciated to $5 million. “If I get divorced, Linda will make me sell it,” he complains on the tape. However, he devised a plan involving SoBe Entertainment mogul Cecile Barker—the same man he called the n-word and slammed as a “black billionaire” elsewhere on the tape. “F**k it,” Hulk says. “Cecile will buy it and give it back to me after the divorce!” Hogan seems unaffected when Bubba begins his own racist outburst. As Bubba hands Hogan a gift, a pair of Oakley sunglasses inscribed with “Hulk Hogan,” Bubba says, Who’s your n***a? I have something for you. Who’s your n***a?” When the tape was publicly revealed, Hulk Hogan was quick to issue an apology . “Eight years ago, I used offensive language during a conversation,” he says. “It was unacceptable for me to have used that offensive language; there is no excuse for it; and I apologize for having done it.” “This is not who I am,” Hulk adds. “I believe very strongly that every person in the world is important, and should not be treated differently based on race, gender, orientation, religious beliefs or otherwise.”  “I am disappointed with myself that I used language that is offensive and inconsistent with my own beliefs.” Though the tape proves he has racist and homophobic tendencies, Hulk previously spoke out against homophobic when Linda accused him of having a gay affair with Brutus Beefcake, a fellow wrestler. In 2012, he said,  “It’s tough because a lot of my friends in normal life, a lot of my friends in the entertainment business, and a lot of my friends in the wrestling business are gay.” “If it was true and I was gay, I’d embrace it, and I’d tell you guys about it, and I’d celebrate it.” Ultimately, he sued Linda for defamation.  But the case was dismissed. Since the tape’s release, Hulk Hogan has defended himself , citing that President Obama used the n-word and wasn’t fired.  Obama used the word in a candid discussion about race in America.
