‘SNL,’ Andy Samberg Sued By Producers Over ‘Like A Boss’

St. Louis production duo claim they wrote music for ‘Saturday Night Live’ skits ‘Shy Ronnie’ and ‘Like a Boss.’ By Gil Kaufman Andy Samberg Photo: Getty Images A St. Louis production duo who claim they created the tracks that became the “Saturday Night Live” digital shorts “Like a Boss” and ” Shy Ronnie ” have filed a lawsuit against the show and cast member Andy Samberg claiming they haven’t been properly paid for their work. StarStrukk Production members Aleric “Rick tha Rular” Banks and Monique “Foxx StarStrukk” Hines filed a lawsuit in New York Federal court last week against NBC Universal, Samberg, The Lonely Island, and Universal Republic Records for willful copyright infringement and unjust enrichment. According to The Hollywood Reporter the suit alleges that Samberg’s band, The Lonely Island, recorded the tracks submitted by the duo “verbatim,” and then added lyrics on top. Samberg performed “Like a Boss” with Seth Rogen on “SNL” on April 4, 2009 and in December of that year he got together with Rihanna for the Emmy-nominated “Shy Ronnie.” The pair told a local paper that they hooked up with Samberg through a mutual connection in California in 2008, when they submitted tracks to Lonely Island for the band’s debut album. “Like a Boss” was featured on the trio’s 2009 disc Incredibad , while “Shy Ronnie 2: Ronnie & Clyde” was featured in this year’s Turtleneck & Chain . In August 2010, StarStrukk told a local paper that they were excited about being nominated for an Emmy for the “Shy Ronnie” skit, which they said featured a beat they tried, unsuccessfully, to sell to local acts like City Spud and Yung Ro as well as Young Jeezy. But after not getting the credit they felt they deserved or being paid appropriately, they filed suit. Banks claims he signed a form sent by the Universal Music Group in which he stated that he was a 50 percent owner of the copyright on “Like a Boss” as the writer and producer of the tune. According to the suit, he received a response letter that only gave him 25 percent interest in the tune. But, so far, Banks says he hasn’t gotten any producer royalties or profits from the songs. A spokesperson for NBCU could not be reached for comment at press time.

Jay-Z, Kanye West Sued Over Watch The Throne Sample

Soul legend Syl Johnson claims duo used 1967 hit without permission. By Gil Kaufman Jay-Z and Kanye West Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage Jay-Z and Kanye West have been sued by soul/blues icon Syl Johnson over allegations that they sampled one of his songs on their Watch the Throne album without permission. The complaint, filed in Illinois federal court Friday, alleges that the dynamic duo sampled a portion of his 1967 hit “Different Strokes” on the Throne deluxe-edition song “The Joy,” according to the Hollywood Reporter . Johnson claims the song was sampled without his permission and has was not credited in the album’s liner notes. The allegation of copyright infringement was first raised in late August, when archival record label and publisher the Numero Uno Group — which was erroneously credited as the song’s publisher in the Throne — threatened a lawsuit on Johnson’s behalf. The suit further claims West originally attempted to sample the tune on his My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy solo album, but was unable to get clearance in time to use it. Given that history, the suit alleges West’s decision to use the sample on another album without permission is an example of “knowing” and “willful” misappropriation. The funky blues song has long been a favorite among rappers, including the Wu-Tang Clan (“Shame on a N—a”), Public Enemy (“Fight the Power”), the Beastie Boys (“Desperado”), the Geto Boys (“Homie Don’t Play That”) and Kool G Rap (“Talk Like Sex”) — and Johnson has not shied away from suing other hip-hop acts in the past to get paid for the use of his music. The suit seeks to impound all the copies of Throne and requests a full accounting of sale and publishing money, along with punitive damages. A spokesperson for the Throne could not be reached for comment at press time. Related Artists Kanye West Jay-Z

Marilyn Monroe "Sex Film" Goes Unsold at Auction

It’s still under debate whether or not a 1948 “stag film” owned by Spanish events promoter Mikel Barsa actually contains footage of a young Marilyn Monroe , but buyers at an auction this weekend weren’t willing to take the risk. Barsa claims that the woman in the scratchy 6-minute film reel, unearthed in 1980, is Marilyn, or Norma Jean Baker as she was called then, masturbating and having sex with an unidentified man. But Barsa also claims that a 1996 letter from Alan Brown of the American Film Institute “proves” it’s her in the movie, while the letter, available online, actually says: It’s not clear whether the woman in the film is Marilyn Monroe — if not, she’s definitely a lookalike. Lookalike or not, Marilyn’s estate flat-out denies that the woman in the film is her, and Authentic Brands Group , the company that licenses Marilyn’s image for all those awful “playing pool with Elvis and Jimmy Dean in paradise” posters, went so far as to say Barsa is “perpetrating a fraud on the public, violating the Monroe estate’s exclusive rights to her image and other claims of intellectual property infringement”. Thanks to these harsh words, the “stag film” received no offers at an Argentinan auction this weekend, falling far short of its $480,000 expectations. You know, Mr. Barsa, Mr. Skin’s got a crack team of skin experts that would be slappy to review the reel. If anybody can crack this nude case, it’s Mr. Skin, so how ’bout you send US the footage? See Marilyn Monroe i n all her 37-23-36 glory with her nude roles in The Misfits (1961) and Something’s Got to Give (1962) right here at MrSkin.com!

Lady Gaga Sued For Allegedly Copying ‘Judas’

Chicago-based singer Rebecca Francescatti claims Gaga’s song is similar to a song she recorded in 1999 called ‘Juda.’ By Kara Warner Lady Gaga Photo: Michael Loccisano/ Getty Images Relatively unknown Chicago-based singer Rebecca Francescatti has filed a lawsuit against Lady Gaga for alleged copyright infringement on her hit single “Judas.” According to TMZ , Francescatti claims that “Juda,” a song she recorded in 1999 with her band Rebecca F. & the Memes, has multiple similarities with Gaga’s track, chief among them the fact that Francescatti’s former bass player Brian Gaynor is now employed by a music company that wrote 17 songs for Gaga’s Born This Way album. NBC Chicago reported that Gaynor was open with Francescatti and admitted that he was writing for and working with Gaga. Francescatti’s lawyer, Chris Niro, told TMZ that his client is seeking proper recognition for her original work. “Though the songs are different styles, the composition is the same and the chorus is the same melody,” he told the site. “[Rebecca] is seeking recognition for what she created.” By “recognition,” Francescatti means money she believes is owed to her. In the lawsuit, a copy of which was obtained by the Huffington Post , Francescatti names Gaga, Interscope Records, Universal Music Group, DJ White Shadow and sound engineer Brian Joseph Gaynor as participants in creating the single “Judas,” a song that bears “a substantial similarity” to “Juda” in that Gaga allegedly “copied and incorporated substantial, original portions” of the work, though it was previously copyrighted and recorded with Gaynor. Francescatti is reportedly seeking a cut from the profits “Judas” has earned. Do you think the two songs are similar? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Lady Gaga

So You Think You Can Dance Review: Going GaGa

Rob Marshall and Lady GaGa joined the So You Think You Can Judge panel this week, as the dancers put in 12 performances. Makes me tired just thinking about it… Sasha & Pasha – Quickstep (Jonathan Roberts) – Their dancing was over exaggerated in the beginning. It looked like Pasha was holding Sasha upright and, if he wasn’t there, she’d fall right over. The dance was done well, but will probably be forgotten. There was something tribal about Sasha’s dancing, but it could have been because of the headpiece. My Grade: B+ . Caitlynn & Ivan – Hip-Hop (Marty Kudelka) – Just like the song, the performance felt very 2004/2005 as if Ivan was a contestant instead of an all-star. Caitlynn fit perfectly during the routine, but the routine felt safe and clich
