Johnny Keyser, Lauren Gray Wow ‘American Idol’ Panel

Reis Kloeckner, Ethan Jones and Rachelle Lamb also fly through to Hollywood. By Adam Graham Steven Tyler on “American Idol” Photo: FOX In popular music, St. Louis might be known as the home of Chuck Berry or Nelly, but in the world of “American Idol,” it’s the city that hosted Carrie Underwood’s audition. “Idol” returned to the Gateway to the West on Thursday (February 2), hoping to find the show’s next megastar. And they got off on the right foot with contestant Johnny Keyser, 22, from Pompano Beach, Florida, who blew the judges away with his rendition of Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come.” “Should we just vote now?” Steven Tyler asked only a few bars into the song. Keyser was quickly sped through to Hollywood and set a good tone for St. Louis. As did Lauren Gray, who works at her family’s one-stop wedding shop and sings in a wedding band with her father. Gray’s version of Adele’s “One and Only” left Jennifer Lopez’s mouth agape and had Randy Jackson calling her “fearless.” Lopez called her “one of the best female voices we’ve heard” and the three of them sent her on her way to Hollywood; later, when summing up the St. Louis auditions, Lopez said, “I have two words for today: Lauren Gray.” In all, 46 contestants were passed through to the Hollywood round. Among them was 20-year-old Reis Kloeckner, whose version of “Lean on Me” brought a tear to Tyler’s eye. “That was so beautiful. You made me cry. That’s how good that was just now,” Tyler said. Lopez and Jackson agreed and sent the pizza maker — whose name is pronounced “Reese” — through to the next round. Next up was 22-year-old Ethan Jones of Pontoon Beach, Illinois, a singer in a country band who belted out Edwin McCain’s “I’ll Be” and bled through his audition, due to a cut on his forehead he accidentally opened up while in the waiting room. (Seriously, no one had a Band-Aid?) Jones earned three yes votes from the judges and hopefully stopped bleeding somewhere on the way to Hollywood. Rachelle Lamb, meanwhile, joined Portland auditioner Britnee Kellogg by singing a song directed toward an ex who did her wrong. The 26-year-old construction worker sang Faith Hill’s “Dearly Beloved” (which she referred to as “Find Somebody New”) and earned a passing grade from the judges; maybe she and Kellogg can team up come Hollywood. With the audition phase now over — in voice-over, Ryan Seacrest called them “the most successful road auditions we’ve ever had” — the dreaded/ feared/ beloved Hollywood Week kicks off next week. What did you think of Thursday’s “Idol”? Were these “the most successful road auditions ever”? Let us know in the comments! Kendra Wilkinson Promises ‘Fun’ Foxtrot On ‘Dancing With The Stars’

Playboy bunny says this week’s routine is ‘more Kendra.’ By Kara Warner Kendra Wilkinson Photo: James Lacsina LOS ANGELES — After last week’s traditional yet slightly uneventful classical performances on “Dancing With the Stars,” fans and castmembers alike are excited about what possibilities are ahead with Monday night’s (April 18) far more open-ended American Week. MTV News was lucky enough to be invited to the official “DWTS” rehearsals studio Friday to get a sneak peek of Kendra Wilkinson and Louis Van Amstel’s routine. Despite having the lowest ranks from the judges last week — they scored 18 out of 30 points for their waltz — Wilkinson and Van Amstel made it through to another round of competition and are eager to start fresh with a brand-new, energetic routine. “It’s week five, we have foxtrot, and it’s American Week,” Van Amstel told us. “American Week,” Wilkinson echoed. ” My week.” Cut to Wilkinson strapping herself into her dancing shoes and Van Amstel giving her a few quick stage directions before they got down to business rehearsing their foxtrot. “There’s no way I can’t have fun with this dance on Monday night,” Wilkinson said. “The song is amazing, everybody knows it,” she promised. “Dancing to it you just get so happy. I’m excited about it.” Wilkinson went on to say that with this dance, she’s able to put a lot more of herself into it, versus several of her prior routines. “With ballroom dancing, you think very classy, sophisticated, the whole Cinderella [image], whatever, but this week is going to be fun,” she said. “More Kendra, for sure.” Are you rooting for Kendra on “Dancing With the Stars”? ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Results: Sugar Ray Leonard Gets KO’d

‘I fought a good fight,’ the boxer says of his run on the ABC show. By Kelley L. Carter Anna Trebunskaya and Sugar Ray Leonard Photo: ABC As often happens, it wasn’t the celebrity with the lowest score who was booted Tuesday night from “Dancing With the Stars.” In spite of having the lowest marks from the judges, Kendra Wilkinson — who scored 18 out of 30 points for her waltz on Monday night’s classical-themed night — managed to survive another week. Instead, it was star boxer Sugar Ray Leonard who was given the one-two punch. The hit ABC show had the dancers performing either the paso doble, waltz or Viennese waltz in front of a 46-piece orchestra on Monday. And in true dramatic fashion on Tuesday, the week’s highest scorers, Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas, were teased to be one of the possible couples heading home. The pair was placed in the bottom three. Finally, after a performance by Jennifer Hudson, host Tom Bergeron announced that Leonard would be going home. The boxer, who had the second-lowest score of the week, was asked if he was surprised at his elimination. “That’s life and I fought a good fight. I’ll cherish this moment — good friends, good show,” the boxer said after learning he was heading home. “I love the spirit of the show. I love the people on this show.” The night before, judge Carrie Ann Inaba told him, “I don’t think I’ve ever smiled that much. I absolutely fell in love with that dance and both of you.” His partner, Anna Trebunskaya, said working with his was a blast. “We had so much fun,” she said. “It’s just amazing that a boxer became a ballet dancer!” Related Photos ‘Dancing With The Stars’ Season 12 Cast Revealed

Steven Tyler American Idol apology

As the sober, printed message from the network first scrolled across the screen, inquiring minds wondered, what would Fox be apologizing for? – Steven Tyler spending the previous two weeks drooling over girls young enough to be his grand-daughter? – The total lack of judgement from the judges? – The relentlessness of the tear-jerking backstories from contestants? Wednesday night#39;s “American Idol” began with a gesture that seemed to good to be true – an apology. Earlier in the evening,

‘American Idol’ Fans Split On Siobhan Magnus Elimination

Some say it was Siobhan’s time to go, others are outraged. By MTV News Staff Siobhan Magnus Photo: FOX Randy Jackson loved her “punk-country” look and Kara DioGuardi declared, “Guess who’s back? Siobhan!” But this week, “American Idol” voters seemed to side with Simon Cowell when he said of Siobhan Magnus’ performance, “I think the screaming at the end may have gone a little bit — it was almost like you were giving birth up there.” And so the 20-year-old Cape Cod resident is the latest “Idol” hopeful to get the boot — to the surprise of “Idol” experts MTV News spoke with on Thursday (April 29). As expected, fans are split on the decision, with some arguing it was Siobhan’s time to go and others declaring the elimination to be a disgrace. “Siobhan was the most interesting and entertaining of the singers, and man, can she sing!” wrote MTV News reader Violet. “If you have a good ear and any experience singing, you would hear that she hits every high note dead on. That’s not a screech. She has an incredibly wide range and just maybe needed some more positive comments from the judges?” Not so, contends reader Eric. “Siobhan has a wee bit too much ‘screech’ in her voice,” he wrote. “She needs more experience. But ultimately she’ll [get] there if she doesn’t lose interest.” According to reader Peggy Sue, Siobhan’s problem was simply a matter of failing to pick the songs that fit her vocal strengths. “Siobhan was signing from her throat, not the right place, so when she sang softly with lower notes it sounded weird,” she wrote. “That’s why she sounded so good on ‘Think’ — it forced her to get out of her throat. I agree that she sounded stupendous on those kinds of songs, she should have stuck to them. But instead she sang a lot of slower ballads that sounded unpleasant.” While there’s no agreement about the justice of Siobhan’s ouster, there are a range of opinions about the contestant who really deserves to go home. Some feel Lee Dewyze has been over-praised by the judges, while a few have tapped Casey James as the most deserving bootee. “I do not understand what Americans see in Casey James,” writes Luckybarbe. “Just listen to his voice, OMG it’s not that good, it’s sort of annoying. I think women are looking at his looks more than listening to the way he sounds.” Do you think it was Siobhan’s time to leave ‘American Idol’? Let us know in the comments below! And, it seems that if the situation arises, she’d love to play Bonnie to his Clyde at some point during the show. “I’m thrilled to meet him. I’m thrilled to hear he’s going to be on the show because he’s the hottest thing since sliced bread, but I certainly enjoy him. I haven’t talked to anybody. I hope I’ll be with some kind of animals,” she said. “They’re the other half of my life. They always get my calm and tone me down.” The episode with have many past female cast members coming back to make an appearance, and it leaves the fate of the male cast members up in the air. Siobhan Magnus’ Elimination Surprises ‘American Idol’ Experts

‘I can only surmise that she was just too damn weird for ‘American Idol,’ ‘ MJ Santilli says. By Gil Kaufman Siobhan Magnus performs on “American Idol” Wednesday Photo: FOX On Wednesday, MTV’s “American Idol” experts confidently predicted that big Michael Lynche would be facing elimination for a second time this season after a so-so outing on Shania Twain night. But a few hours later, Mike was saved (again) from the bottom and it was caterwauling, glassblowing apprentice Siobhan Magnus who was ousted , leaving this much-heralded “girls” season on “Idol” down to one female front-runner, Crystal Bowersox. “Siobhan’s elimination was a pretty big shocker,” MTV News’ “Idol in 60 Seconds” major domo Jim Cantiello said. “In the ‘Idol’ pundit world, all bets were on Michael Lynche to go home.” Among the factor’s Jim cited as contributing to the surprise: Magnus got the final “pimp spot” on Tuesday’s show, which helped her join an elite group of pimp spot bootees that includes Lilly Scott, Melinda Doolittle, Anoop Desai and, if you include the finales, David Archuleta and Clay Aiken. Also, for the first time in weeks, she received good notes from the judges’ panel for her energetic cover of “Any Man of Mine.” Well, except for Simon Cowell describing her screaming as the sound of a woman giving birth. “Perhaps viewers assumed Siobhan was safe, or they resisted the over-praise from the judges,” Cantiello speculated. “[But] Siobhan’s journey has been frustrating. The cool, quirky Cape Cod crooner who began this season rocking out to songs by the Animals morphed into a cabaret performer with a penchant for generic ballads and singing through her nose. While ‘Any Man of Mine’ wasn’t a particularly great performance, it signaled a step back in the right direction.” Cantiello now fears that excitement factor may have passed for the season. “I simply do not care what Casey James or Lee Dewyze or Aaron Kelly or even MamaSox will sing,” he lamented. “What you see is what you get. No alarms and no surprises.” MJ Santilli of MJsBigBlog.com predicted a while ago that Magnus might be booted early because of her erratic singing, often defensive post-performance ramblings and amorphous artistic identity. But MJ, too, was unprepared for the elimination this week. “Even though she was one of the weakest performers on Tuesday, there were contestants who were either weaker performers and/or less compelling personalities,” she said. “Aaron Kelly has been mediocre during his entire run on ‘Idol.’ He’s got a decent voice, but his song choices and performing skills have been awful. … But his mommy-centric version of ‘It’s in the Way You Love Me’ had moms and grannies lunging for their phones, I suspect.” Santilli also said Lynche’s performance was just OK, and neither singer leaves you wondering what they’ll be up to next. “Siobhan had a better spot in the lineup than either Mike or Aaron, and the judges liked her too,” she said. “Yet, the viewing audience rejected her, and I can only surmise that she was just too damn weird for ‘American Idol,’ ultimately.”
