MTV VMAs Set To Roll Out White Carpet: Catch A Sneak Peek!

‘The theme this year for our carpet is ‘Hollywood Mansion,’ ‘ reveals VMA pre-show executive producer Ryan Kroft. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Tim Kash The VMA white carpet step and repeat wall on Thursday Photo: Rachel Goldner/ MTV News As part of our efforts to bring everyone as far behind-the-scenes as possible in the lead-up to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , MTV News correspondent Tim Kash recently took a tour of the under-construction, soon-to-be-star-studded white carpet. Kash was led by MTV’s VMA pre-show executive producer Ryan Kroft. “The theme this year for our red carpet is ‘Hollywood Mansion,’ ” Kroft explained, pointing out key stopping points for celebrities and show crews on what has been designated as the press line. Kroft explained that the wall built for this year’s step-and-repeat (the area where celebs stop to be photographed) will be extra high. “They’re normally 10-feet-high, but this year it’s going to be 21-feet-high,” he said. “We do it big. It’s going to look like this wall of this mansion we’re creating. “When the carpet opens, it’s going to be pure white,” Kroft continued. “White set, black accents, gorgeous.” Eagle-eyed MTV awards show fans probably know that this isn’t the first time the network has gone with a gleaming white rug for the VMAs. In 2005, the show made a return trip to Miami and the production crew once gain began mulling over the idea of an all-white carpet. While they had only considered the possibility a year earlier at the 2004 ceremony — also at Miami’s American Airlines Arena — they didn’t follow through until host Sean “Diddy” Combs encouraged it with a spontaneous declaration at a press conference. So as Diddy turned the carpet from red to white, the biggest challenge was keeping the carpet dry after hurricane Katrina, then only a category 1 storm, had swept through. Which brings up an important question, how in the heck do you keep a white carpet clean with hundreds of people stomping across it? According to Staging Supervisor Aaron Chawla, the trick is to keep it covered in plastic for as long as possible before showtime — and having vacuums and steam cleaners on site for any sudden spills or stains. For those who won’t make it to L.A. to see it up-close, MTV News is giving away 10 pieces of our specially made white carpet. Visit the MTV News Facebook page for details. Current fans of the page should look for the VMA Giveaway tab for more information, and soon-to-be fans need only click “like” in order to receive the same info. We’ll be giving away one piece of carpet a day leading up to the show, with the remaining few up for grabs on Sunday. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. Related Videos VMA 2010 Exposed

‘Glee’ Cast In Desperate Hunt For VMA Tickets

‘Can we get some tickets, for God’s sake?’ asks a peeved Mike O’Malley. ‘Or do they only give it to the young kids of ‘Glee’?’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Matthew Morrison Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images When MTV News announced that the cast of “Glee” would be presenting at this year’s Video Music Awards , fans of the show and castmembers alike seemed to have reason to celebrate. But it turns out not everyone is so “Glee”-ful. Some of their Fox castmates — specifically, those actors whose names aren’t Cory Monteith, Chris Colfer, Amber Riley and Jane Lynch — are trying to score VMA tickets before the show kicks off on Sunday in Los Angeles. “Can we get some tickets, for God’s sake? Or do they only give it to the young kids of ‘Glee’?” Mike O’Malley joked to MTV News at the show’s season-two premiere earlier this week. Dot Jones asked us, “Can I go with you?” “I want to go!” Jessalyn Gilsig, who plays Will Schuester’s wife, whined. Well, they may not be able to make it to the awards show, but they can watch it from the comfort of their living rooms and catch the night’s other big presenters. TV talk-show maven and former “American Idol” host Ellen DeGeneres (who will tape an episode of her show at the VMAs), reality-show starlet Kim Kardashian, VMA-nominated Katy Perry, “Star Trek” star Chris Pine, Rosario Dawson, the cast of “Jackass” (including Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera and Steve-O) and others will present from the Nokia Theatre. But co-star Matthew Morrison , who has a solo album in the works, revealed his a plan to score a place at the next Video Music Awards. “I’m hoping to perform at the VMAs next year!” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. Lady Gaga Vs. Eminem At VMAs: Ke$ha Weighs In

‘I have mad respect for both of them,’ Best New Artist nominee says. By Kara Warner Ke$ha Photo: MTV News The buzz around our MTV Video Music Awards has hit a fever pitch, with just four more days until the biggest stars in music descend on the Nokia Theatre for a night of major performances, special guest appearances and plenty of unplanned surprises. When we caught up with spunky Best New Artist nominee Ke$ha — who is also up for a Best Collaboration Moonman with 3OH!3 for their peppy clip for “My First Kiss” — she seemed eager to just attend the festivities, let alone win. “I don’t even think I’m invited,” she joked (we think). When asked what her plans are for the show, she suggested some slightly over-the-top pranks — and that she might lose control of certain bodily functions. “I might throw water balloons at people,” she said. “I might pee myself just thinking about it.” Regarding her take on the evening’s biggest prize, Video of the Year, the “Tik Tok” singer was torn between VMA-nomination dominators Lady Gaga and Eminem . “I have mad respect for both of them, so I can’t really say who I’d pick,” she said. “I think that Eminem is really amazing, because he’s so honest and I really connect with brutally honest people and artists. And then Gaga’s whole thing is incredible too. I can’t really say who I hope would win, but I’d like to see what’s going to happen.” Who do you think will win? Lady Gaga or Eminem? Bruno Mars Premieres ‘Just The Way You Are’ Video

Romantic clip debuts at MTV.com Wednesday (September 8). By Hillary Crosley Bruno Mars in his video for “Just the Way You Are” Photo: Atlantic Bruno Mars ‘ romantic chorus on the B.o.B-led hit “Nothin’ On You” isn’t the last of his sweet lyrics. The Hawaiian-born singer released a creative clip for his single “Just the Way You Are” on Wednesday (September 8) at MTV.com. Sporting a feathered fedora, denim jacket and a smile, the singer-songwriter charms viewers in the stripped-down video, which uses animation to exemplify Bruno’s adoration for his lady. Taking a cassette, Mars stretches out the tape inside to reveal animated interpretations of his lyrics. From a flattering drawing of his lady to a mock-up of the singer himself behind a piano, the concept is eye-catching. “Her eyes, her eyes make the stars look like they’re not shining/ Her hair, her hair falling perfectly without her trying/ She’s so beautiful and I tell her every day,” he sings. On the heels of two top singles, “Nothin’ On You” and “Billionaire,” featuring Mars on the chorus, the singer released a four-song EP titled It’s Better if You Don’t Understand in May. Mars told MTV News that the project was a collection of “songs in my back pocket and the label thought it’d be a good time to give people a little taste of what they’re gonna get with the album. The EP came together real nice; you’re gonna get a nice effect of what’s in store.” Now Mars is getting ready to release his debut full-length album via Atlantic Records and gearing up for his live performance at the 2010 MTV VMAs. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET. 30 Seconds To Mars Plot ‘Crazy’ Entrance For 2010 VMAs

Jared Leto likens it to ‘open-heart surgery on the dance floor.’ By James Montgomery 30 Seconds To Mars Photo: MTV News You would probably think — based on, well, practically everything — that Jared Leto is not the kind of guy who likes to play things close to the vest (or studded leather jacket, or whatever). And in most instances, you’d be right. But not when it comes to 30 Seconds To Mars’ arrival at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards . Because while he’s certainly got big plans, he’s not about to reveal them just yet. “We have an entrance plan that has never, ever been done before in the history of the VMAs,” Leto told MTV News on Tuesday. “Basically, it’s like ‘Seinfeld’ but not … it’s like open-heart surgery on the dance floor, it’s like taking your eyeballs out and putting them in the opposite sockets. It’s going to be crazy.” That sounds, uh, interesting. And while we suspect he’s kidding, Leto and his 30 Seconds to Mars mates definitely have something in the works for the big show, which airs Sunday, September 12, live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. After all, 30 Seconds to Mars are nominated for four awards, including Best Rock Video and Video of the Year for their epic “Kings and Queens” clip . And so, somewhat appropriately, their grand entrance will probably be inspired by that video. Though, again, Leto isn’t about to give away any secrets. “It could, quite possibly, pay homage to the ‘Kings and Queens’ video,” he said. “We may be arriving in a way that encourages treating your planet in a better way. … We will hopefully be arriving in style, and [be doing] something different and fun and something I believe is appropriate.” So, bikes? Maybe. Though nothing is set in stone just yet … there are still backroom deals to be made and palms to be greased. Both of which, as luck would have it, are 30STM specialties. “We are plotting and planning the arrival of 30 Seconds to Mars, and hopefully, we will be appearing in a very special way, but we haven’t got the final approval [yet],” Leto smiled. “We only do behind-the-scenes campaigning. We’re into bribery and things like that.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12. Kanye West Tweets Status Of Justin Bieber Remix

‘Raekwon’s verse is crazy,’ he teases about the track. By Jocelyn Vena Kanye West Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage It didn’t take long for the Kanye West-Justin Bieber collaboration to come to fruition. Just days after tweeting about a possible joint project, West let fans know that he’s nearly finished remixing Bieber’s “Runaway Love.” Early on Thursday (August 19), West tweeted , “Finishing @JustinBieber Runaway Love remix too… don’t know when they gonna drop it but Raekwon’s verse is crazy!!!” Prior to jumping on the track, Wu-Tang rapper Raekwon confirmed that he was working toward getting the West-Bieber project off the ground. “It’s definitely gonna happen,” he told XXL magazine. “When you got these kinda talents merging together to do something exciting, I think it’s something that’s gonna make the fans check it out. I’m big fans of both of these guys. I think, at the end of the day, shorty is a sensation. And [for him] to acknowledge me it makes me feel good that the young generation is checkin’ me out like that. And at the same time it gives me a position to play a big brother in the game. He wants my assistance or whatever, he can get it. I respect him, I like his style.” Its’ been quite a week for Bieber, who re-tweeted Raekwon’s XXL confirmation. In addition to having West and Raekwon work their magic on his song, it was just announced that the VMA-nominated singer will also perform at the big show. Chelsea Handler To Host The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards

VMAs air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. By James Montgomery Chelsea Handler Photo: Getty Images The censors have been put on high alert, and the celebs have been given fair warning: Sardonic and sass-tacular comedian Chelsea Handler has been tapped to host the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards — airing live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET — and things are probably gonna get a little raw. Handler — best known for her exploits on the outrageous late-night talk show “Chelsea Lately” and her three best-selling, brutally honest (and brutally funny) books — won’t pull any punches on VMA night. She’ll also be making a little history, becoming only the second woman to fly solo as VMA host and the first since 1994, back when Roseanne Barr lorded over the proceedings. She’ll join a rapidly growing roster of performers (including Kanye West , Florence and the Machine , B.o.B and Justin Bieber ) and presenters (Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, Ashley Greene and Ne-Yo) for the big show. And more names are being added daily. While the stage will be overflowing with stars, the actual winners of the VMAs will be determined by you. Drake Wishes Lil Wayne Could Join Him For 2010 VMAs

‘We could get him out for a day,’ MC says of his incarcerated mentor. By Jayson Rodriguez Drake Photo: MTV News TORONTO — Drake will make his VMA debut next month when he performs at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards , and the Thank Me Later star is already thinking about making a grand entrance. He has some history to compete with — it’s hard to beat Diddy arriving via yacht or T-Pain riding an elephant into the festivities. Drake is still wrapping his thoughts around some ideas, but one plan he wishes he could execute is to step onto the VMA red carpet with Lil Wayne. “That would be the illest moment,” Drake said while taking a break from a VMA promotional shoot. “Mob through. The whole Young Money. … Nobody knew about it. We just all show up. … Or we could get him out for a day. And even if he had to wear a jumpsuit or something.” Wayne began his one-year prison sentence for a 2007 gun charge March 8. Unfortunately for Drake, according to prison records accessed by MTV News in July, Lil Wayne has a projected release date of November 4, two months after the VMAs, which will take place September 12 in Los Angeles. Drake, Kanye West, and Florence and the Machine were announced earlier this week as this year’s VMA performers. The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners from now through September 12. How do you think Drake should arrive at the VMAs? Katy Perry’s ‘Teenage Dream’ Video: Fall In Love All Over Again

Romantic clip for title track of pop star’s forthcoming album co-stars actor Josh Kloss. By James Montgomery Josh Kloss and Katy Perry in the “Teenage Dream” music video Photo: Eric Ford/Danny Mayer/ On Location News You’ve got to hand it to Katy Perry : she’s really hitting on all cylinders these days. “California Gurls,” the first single from her album Teenage Dream , was the official anthem of the first half of summer, a fun and flirty song that probably served as the soundtrack to your various beachfront flings. And now, she’s back with the album’s title track — and second single — which will undoubtedly serve as the soundtrack to one of those flings blossoming. She’s got you covered every step of the way … it’s sorta brilliant, really. Both “Teenage Dream” and its accompanying video are about falling madly in love, about losing your inhibitions and getting jelly-kneed by the mere thought of being near that certain someone. Sure, you may have snogged your fair share of guys or gals down the shore this summer (that’s what “California Gurls” was for), but now you’ve found the one that makes you feel all giddy inside, and you’re ready to let your guard down and go head-over-heels. “Dream” is all those gooey feelings turned into a pop song. The video was directed by Yoann Lemoine, who fills it with gauzy, sunset-tinged scenery: a beach in the waning light, the rapidly darkening hills of California, the incandescent glow of a pool in the early evening. Much like the song itself, the entire clip feels like a wooshing, love-drunk dream. Perry frolics with a frequently shirtless hunk (actor Josh Kloss) and is giddy throughout. She brings her friends (including L.A. socialites Ana Calderon and DJ Skeet Skeet) along to share in the merriment, and they throw impromptu dance parties all over Southern California. It all possesses an unwound, unabashed glee — the kind of bliss that only comes when you first fall in love, when everything seems to be taken from a movie (or, in this case, an Abercrombie & Fitch billboard) and nothing seems impossible. In that regard, it fits the feel of the song perfectly. Perry always stays on message. There is no deviation. It’s ingenious, not to mention a little frightening. Welcome to your favorite song of the second half of 2010, the one you’ll fall in love with (and to). You are powerless to resist. What do you think of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”?
