‘The type of music that I make … is definitely underground and Southern hip-hop,’ K.R.I.T. tells RapFix Live. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway Big Krit Photo: MTV News Big K.R.I.T. was already buzzing heavy before he signed his record deal with Def Jam, and on September 27 he will release his major label debut, Live From the Underground. The Mississippi rapper checked in to MTV’s RapFix Live from the studio, where he is putting the finishing touches on his album, via Skype. K.R.I.T., one of MTV Jams’ Fab 5 , became an underground rap favorite when he released the free mixtape K.R.I.T. Wuz Here , which played more like an album, in 2009. The project’s soulful rap aesthetic and acclaim earned him a record deal, but the “Country Sh–” rapper is still holding on to his indie roots. “Man, ’cause I’m still underground at heart,” K.R.I.T. told MTV News when asked about his debut’s title. “At the end of the day, the type of music that I make, the type of sound I’m trying to create, is definitely being underground and Southern hip-hop. A lot of people didn’t know I was signed to Def Jam when I dropped ‘Return of 4Eva.’ I signed to Def Jam June of last year. So it’s been a process of working, grinding, proving myself, and just kind of showing people I’m not going to change just because I’m signed to a major.” “Return of 4Eva” was available for free download, and then Def Jam also dropped an EP of the project for sale on iTunes. Late last year, K.R.I.T. hit the road with Curren$y and Smoke DZA on the Smoker’s Club Tour (another tour is planned for this fall, with Method Man headlining). Come September 27, another fellow hip-hop up-and-comer, Roc Nation’s J. Cole , is also dropping his proper debut, but K.R.I.T. sees it only as friendly competition. “End of the day man, I feel like we all got our fanbase and we all just try to make quality music for the sake of hip-hop,” K.R.I.T. said. “And we all friends and cool man, so it’s just about knowing that your partner is going to put his all into his music and that you should do the same. And at the end of the day, we all meet up, and we’re going to do these shows and we’re going to tour and we’re going to have fun.” K.R.I.T., who appeared on XXL magazine’s Freshmen cover with fellow RapFix guest Mac Miller, continued, “It’s really all good man. I’m my worst critic so the music is not going to come out unless I feel 100 percent strongly about the content and the subject matter. I’m just going to do my best, brother.” Part of K.R.I.T.’s best includes handling all the production duties on his album and making sure to include social commentary in his lyrics. The 24-year-old plans to tackle topics like the murder of James Craig Anderson , the flooding of the Mississippi River and the tornadoes that hit Tuscaloosa, Alabama. “I’m really going to try to touch on all those topics ’cause I feel like sometimes just because we’re in Alabama or we’re in Mississippi, things happen and people expect it to be cool and OK, they’ll get over it,” K.R.I.T. said. “But we need help just like everybody else.” Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ With Mac Miller, Big K.R.I.T., Future Related Artists Big K.R.I.T.
A trailer for the upcoming Natalie Portman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Rainn Wilson flick Hesher has been making the rounds online, and Levitt and Wilson are none too happy. It appears this new trailer is not in fact from the studio or producers and, according to the stars, completely misrepresents the movie. On the bright side, at least people are talking about the flick that premiered over a year ago.
The ‘California Gurls’ pair will reunite for the upcoming Doggystyle 2: The Doggumentary. By Jayson Rodriguez Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images Snoop Dogg is in a “let’s do it again” type of mood. The rapper announced plans to work with Katy Perry again after the pair’s “California Gurls” collaboration shot to the top of the iTunes singles chart this week. ( Perry’s album, Teenage Dream, also hit #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart this week.) “We’re trying to get together and do something on my new album … so [I’m] definitely in contact with her,” Snoop told OK! magazine about Perry. “She’s a sweet girl and I had fun making the record with her. Like I said, I’m looking forward to her being on my record as well.” The album in question is Doggystyle 2: The Doggumentary. Snoop announced he’s revisiting his classic debut album in a BubbleTweet video message sent over Swizz Beatz’s Twitter account. Snoop and Swizz were in a studio session and revealed they had recorded upwards of 18 new tracks together. “Man, this is big Snoop Dogg coming to you live from the studio somewhere,” Snoop said in the clip. “With Swizzle, and he just laced my boots up for my new record. He gave me some gangster sh–, some Crip sh–, some R&B sh–, some hip-hop sh–, some hard sh–, some mean sh–.” The Los Angeles lyricist then revealed the name of his next album before the clip cut off. Snoop’s Doggystyle was released in November 1993. The collection was produced by Dr. Dre and, along with Dre’s The Chronic, helped solidify the West Coast’s reign atop the hip-hop game. It still remains one of the best-selling debuts in hip-hop history. Last month, Snoop revisited his debut project as a part of this year’s Rock the Bells tour, which had performers playing seminal albums in their entirety. Also on the bill were Lauryn Hill ( The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill ), A Tribe Called Quest ( Midnight Marauders ), KRS-One ( Criminal Minded ), Rakim ( Paid in Full ) and the Wu-Tang Clan ( Enter the Wu-Tang [36 Chambers] ). Band announced live disc at show last week in Denver. By Gil Kaufman Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong Photo: Shirlaine Forrest/ WireImage It’s been less than five years since their first official live album, but Green Day are already working on a second one. Singer Billie Joe Armstrong announced at a show in Denver, Colorado, on Friday that the group is recording performances for a follow-up to 2005’s Bullet in a Bible. The veteran punk trio has only released one new studio album since Bible came out, last year’s song cycle 21st Century Breakdown , but Armstrong hinted at the show that the new live disc might contain some rarities when he set up the unreleased gem “Cigarettes and Valentines.” “Hey, I just want to tell you something right now. We’re recording a live f—ing album right now,” Armstrong told the crowd at the Comfort Dental Amphitheater in Denver on Saturday, video of which was posted on YouTube . “So check it out, we’re gonna play a brand-new song. … It ain’t that brand-new. This song is called ‘Cigarettes and Valentines.’ ” The band then broke into the classic three-chord blitzkrieg, which, as Armstrong noted, is not exactly new, but hasn’t officially been released. The tune was recorded in 2003 while Green Day were working on the follow-up to the 2002 B-sides compilation Shenanigans for an album that was supposed to bear the same title. But after the master tapes for the project were stolen from the studio, Green Day scrapped the whole thing and got to work on the disc that would revive their career and make them international superstars, American Idiot. A spokesperson for the band’s label could not be reached at press time to confirm the recording of the live album or provide details on when the disc might be released. Nicki Minaj ‘comes in and she kills it,’ singer says about guest MC. By Mawuse Ziegbe Trey Songz Photo: MTV News Trey Songz’s latest track, “Bottoms Up,” may be about knocking back some drinks at the bar, but the singer said the accompanying video is anything but the typical bottle-popping scene. Instead of taking inspiration solely from the song’s party-startin’ lyrics, Songz said that he’s stepping out of the box when it comes to the track’s visuals. ” ‘Bottoms Up,’ I feel, is a very creative video. [It’s] different from the norm, different than what I feel is expected of me and anything I’ve shot for that matter,” he told MTV News on the set of the video. “[Director] Anthony [Mandler] used a lot of different shooting techniques and I think it heightens whatever it is that the song has already. The drive, the vigor, the club anthem, the energy in the record is definitely heightened with this video.” Songz broke down the concept of the upcoming “Bottoms Up” video — the first single from Passion, Pain & Pleasure — which, despite the song’s club-friendly appeal, resembles a surreal circus versus a crowded bar. “It’s as if I’m walking through some kind of funhouse, filled with women and different seductive things,” Songz said. The crooner added that Mandler works some visual magic to get the carnival-esque theme just right. “There’s a two-way mirror that’s a dope effect that he uses. And the lighting shows, and then you see women and then you don’t and then you see them and then you don’t.” “Bottoms Up” MC Nicki Minaj also added some dimension to the track in the form of her rapid-fire verse, and Songz said she brought the same high energy from the studio to the screen. “Nicki Minaj does an excellent job. She comes in and does exactly what I got her on the record for. She comes in and she kills it,” he gushed. “I wanted her to make the record different. I wanted her to take it to a different place and that’s exactly what she did. Even in the video, she made a major contribution … from her hair to her outfits to the way she raps and how theatrical she is in her delivery.” Are you excited to see what Trey and Nicki do onscreen for “Bottoms Up”? ‘I don’t think my friends have seen ‘Twilight’ yet,’ RPattz says of keeping his pre-fame friends around. By ‘I don’t think my friends have seen ‘Twilight’ yet,’ RPattz says of keeping his pre-fame friends around. MTV News staff Robert Pattinson on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” Wednesday Photo: Warner Bros. Ellen DeGeneres had a double bill of People ‘s Most Beautiful stars on her show Wednesday (May 19), as she welcomed Robert Pattinson and Adam Lambert to her studio. RPattz talked “Eclipse” and was groped by an enthusiastic fan during a segment called “Pattin’ Pattinson,” while Lambert chatted about “Idol” and busted out his single “If I Had You.” First up came everyone’s favorite vampire for a ridiculously sustained round of applause from the studio audience. He was all smiles, quite the contrast to his overhyped reputation as a brooding Hollywood star. But, as Pattinson explained, his public visage has nothing to do with a gloom-and-doom attitude. “I just like doing things where you have a little time to think about what you’re saying,” he said. “I’ve always had a problem actually thinking before I open my mouth.” Give Pattinson credit for staying true to himself rather than getting swept away by his ever-growing fame. His friends help him stay grounded. “My friends are exactly the same,” he said. “I don’t think my friends have seen ‘Twilight’ yet.” One fan who definitely has seen “Twilight” — multiple times, no doubt — is the lucky “Ellen” audience member who took part in the “Pattin’ Pattinson” game, in which she was blindfolded and had to feel up three different men (one of whom was RPattz) and try to guess which one was the vampire star. “I get to touch him!” she squealed. And touch him she did. A lot. Alas, she didn’t make the right pick. Pattinson, for his part, just seemed thankful that the whole thing was over quickly. Next out came Lambert, just hours before the new season of “American Idol” is set to finalize its top-two finalists . The singer was in that exact same position last year, and as he told Ellen, any pressure he felt then was nothing compared to what he’s experienced since leaving the show. “To be honest, going into my career, this is a lot more work than that was,” he said. “Being a recording artist, touring, promos, visiting radio stations. I’m having a blast, but it’s a full-time job. On ‘Idol,’ I was singing one day a week.” Later in the show, Lambert came back out for an energetic performance of his newest single, “If I Had You,” a tune he said is about “connection and love.” “It’s talking about how fame and fortune and all the material things that come with this lifestyle don’t mean anything if you don’t have that love and that connection,” he said. “And I think it’s such an awesome message to put out into the world.” Who is your favorite of the hotties on “Ellen”: RPattz or Glambert? ‘This is what’s gonna take the Peas into 3008,’ Will.I.Am tells his bandmates in the 10-minute piece. By Jayson Rodriguez Black Eyed Peas (file) Photo: Gregg Delman The Black Eyed Peas ‘ Will.I.Am has been promising bigger things lately from his four-person collective, and it’s safe to say the eccentric producer has been delivering every time. From their standout Grammy performance, which the BEP frontman predicted would be a spectacle , to their world tour , which is set to include “things flying and the stage transforming,” it doesn’t look like the group will be slowing down anytime soon. On Wednesday, the record-breaking hip-hop act premiered their latest video, an epic clip for their new singles “Imma Be” and “Rock That Body,” online. The 10-minute video was directed by Rich Lee and features the Peas on a mission to jumpstart the party in the year 3008. The visuals open with Will.I.Am showing his bandmates the product inside a steel briefcase that he has next to him. The contents of the case comprise a technology that can capture his vocals and reproduce them singing or rapping at the touch of a button. “This right here is the future,” he tells Fergie, apl.de.ap and Taboo. “This is what’s gonna take the Peas into 3008.” Fergie, though, is happy with where the group is in 2010. After scoring their first two #1 hits last year, who can blame her? So she storms off in a huff leaving the fellas in Will’s studio. What follows next is an X-Men meets The Matrix -like adventure. Fergie mysteriously wakes up after pulling away from the guys on her motorcycle only to find herself transported into the future. She later reconnects with Will, and the two of them flee in a hover-car from a gigantic robot who, presumably, wants to stop the party. A big no-no for the Peas. Halfway through the clip, “Imma Be” transitions into the even more upbeat “Rock That Body” and the tables turn. Fergie is kidnapped and the rest of the Peas are now in hot pursuit of their First Lady. The guys ultimately get their girl, blasting away at bystanders along the way who start breakin’ after being struck by the rays. In the end, however, the evil robot can’t compete with the Peas’ partying. It loses a dance-off and tumbles to the ground. So the groove wins. And Fergie, who was previously resistant to Will’s forward thinking (“You can’t call yourself futuristic and be afraid of the future,” he said earlier in the clip), then awakens only to discover she crashed just blocks away from the studio. With the group surrounding her, a smile crosses her face as she responds to their assistance. “I got the greatest idea for a video …,” Fergie tells her confused band mates.
