Larry King Explains Decision to End CNN Show — Says It Wasn’t Pressure from the Media

First it was long-time anchor Lou Dobbs, who retired last fall from CNN . Now another fixture of the network will soon be playing another role in the cable news universe. On CNN’s June 29 “Larry King Live,” host Larry King, who had never been terribly friendly with conservative guests , announced his decision he would be giving up his show this fall. “Before I start the show tonight, I want to share some personal news with you,” King said. “Twenty-five years ago, I sat across this table from New York Gov. Mario Cuomo for the first broadcast ever of ‘Larry King Live.’ And now, decades later, I talked to the guys here at CNN and I told them I’d like to end ‘Larry King Live,’ the nightly show that — this fall and CNN has graciously accepted to agree to, giving me more time for my wife and I to get to the kids’ little league games.” King explained he would still contribute CNN and would stay on board until a replacement is found to fill the 9 p.m. ET slot on the network. “I still be a part of the CNN family, be hosting several Larry King specials on major national and international subjects and we’ll be here until a replacement is found, will be here into the fall,” he continued. “Tomorrow night, in fact, Elizabeth Edwards will be our special guest. I’m incredibly proud that we with recently made the ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ for having the longest-running show with the same host in the same time slot on the same network. With that chapter closing, I’m looking forward to the future, what my next chapter will bring. But for now, for here, it’s time to hang up the nightly suspenders. Until then, we’ve got more shows to do and who knows what the future’s going to bring.” King’s guest for this special announcement was no other than liberal bomb-thrower Bill Maher and he said to him it was a decision that involved spending more time with his family. “Well, this was tough, Bill. I mean, it was — it was time. I was ready to do it. CNN folks agreed to it. We sat down. We’re going to do specials and more time with the family,” King said. “And I want to expand. I want to do other things that I haven’t been able to do.” Maher compared the CNN host to Mickey Mantle because of his longevity and told King he thought he was retiring too soon: MAHER: I am — I am reminded of what my father, who was a broadcaster said the day Mickey Mantle retired, say isn’t so, he began the broadcast. KING: You put me in that class? MAHER: Mickey Mantle? You are the Mickey Mantle of broadcasters. Mickey Mantle played 18 seasons. You played more than that. So, I know some people out there will say it is maybe inappropriate to say too soon for a man who is in his 70s, but it is too soon. But Maher raised the possibility that other media may have caused King to decide the time was right to hang it up, which King denied. Maher specifically named The New York Times, which has speculated on the departure on King over the past few years : MAHER: I hope you’re — I hope you’re doing this of your own volition and not because of what the media says. KING: It has nothing to do with it. There was no pressure from CNN. I don’t pay attention to that, I love what I do. But it was time, Bill. It was time. It was just time. I will tell you — MAHER: As long as it is coming from, and not dictated by The New York Times or anybody else. KING: Not at all. MAHER: OK. Over past two years, King has struggled in the ratings behind his cable competition, Fox News Channel’s “Hannity” and MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show.”

Rango Trailer: Johnny Depp is a Leaping Lizard

That Rango teaser a little while back? Really weird. Fortunately, the full trailer for Gore Verbinski’s computer animated comedy is much more comprehensible, and in this one, voice star Johnny Depp is front and center — well, his lizard likeness is, anyway.

Jesus will return by 2050, say 40% of Americans

Americans are largely optimistic about the future, according to the poll from the Pew Research Center For The People and The Press/Smithsonian Magazine. By mid century, 71 per cent believe cancer will be cured, 66 per cent say artificial limbs will work better than real ones and 81 per cent believe computers will be able to converse like humans. But Americans are also braced for a major energy crisis and a warming planet, according to the survey. More than half, or 58 per cent, fear another world war in the next 40 years and 53 per cent expect a terrorist attack against the United States using a nuclear weapon. The poll also shows a sharp dip in overall optimism from 1999, when 81 per cent said they were optimistic about life for themselves and their families. The current poll found just 64 per cent were. Sixty-one percent said they were optimistic about the future of the United States, compared to 70 percent in 1999. And 56 percent predicted the US economy would be stronger in 40 years, compared to 64 percent of those polled in 1999. The results were compiled from telephone and online interviews with 1,546 adults in April. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points, according to Pew. Here are some other findings of the poll: • 71 per cent believe cancer will be cured by 2050. • 81 per cent believe computers will be able to converse like humans. • 68 per cent of those under 30 predict a world war by 2050. • 53 per cent say ordinary people will travel in space • Nearly three-quarters, or 74 per cent, of those polled believe it likely that “most of our energy will come from sources other than coal, oil, and gas”. • Yet 72 per cent believe the world is likely to experience a major worldwide energy crisis by 2050. • 66 per cent say the Earth will definitely or probably get warmer but it breaks down strongly along political lines, with just 48 per cent of Republicans saying so and 83 per cent of Democrats. • 42 per cent say it is likely that scientists will be able to tell what people are thinking by scanning their brains but 55 say this will definitely or probably not happen. • 89 per cent believe a woman will be elected US president by 2050. • 86 per cent say it is at least probable that most Americans will have to work into their 70s before retiring. • 41 per cent say Jesus Christ will return within the next 40 years while 46 per cent say this will definitely or probably not happen. • 63 per cent anticipate the demise of paper money • 61 per cent say almost no one will send letters by 2050. • 31 per cent expect the planet will be struck by an asteroid. added by: cclark_productions

NBA Finals Game 7 Live Blog: Rajon Rondo Leads Celtics To 11-Point Lead

-Four quick halftime thoughts: it was nice of Magic Johnson to finally admit he couldn’t make sense of a basketball game; it was fitting that everyone used the wrestling analogy for their analysis; we need more stories from Bill Walton in the future, even if the events he describes are kind of boring; and this Kobe legacy talk is boring, as expected. On the bright side, it was nice of Jon Barry to say the legacy won’t change if Kobe wins “4, 5, or 7 championships” instead of “4, 6 or 8 championships” like he did in the pregame. -It’s a good thing the jerseys on the front say “Lakers” and “Celtics.” If they instead said “Spurs” and “Nets,” there would be more complaining. Or, more accurately,

Hanson Have Some Advice For Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus

‘If you don’t define who you are … then that can take away from everything you do in the future,’ Zac Hanson tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Hanson Photo: MTV News In the ’90s, boy bands like ‘NSYNC and Backstreet Boys and pop princesses like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera ruled the charts. Hanson have managed to maintain a career long past that era and their breakout single, “MMMBop”; just last week, they released the new album Shout It Out. So do Hanson have any sage advice for the latest crop of pop stars, including Justin Bieber, the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus? “I think the thing about all those artists is, the idea of defining who you really want to be and being that,” Zac Hanson told MTV News on Wednesday, just a day after their canceled show with Drake in New York. “In a lot of these cases, this whole idea of movies and music and TV shows and multimedia whatever, that’s great, but it can also be very confusing,” he continued. “And also, for your audience, if you don’t define who you are or what you represent pretty quickly, then that can take away from everything you do in the future and cheapen any real art or any real thing you want to say.” Taylor Hanson agreed with his little brother’s advice, adding, “Really for anybody, regardless of whether you start young or do pop or rock, surviving in the business of entertainment is difficult. I mean, 90 percent of people don’t succeed. You just have to identify what it is you do and know that you’re always going to be the one who cares the most.” That means you should trust yourself over label execs, the brothers say. “Record labels, producers, TV writers, the whole nine yards, they can go onto another projects, but it’s your life, it’s your name,” Isaac Hanson said. “So in 15 years from now, 20 years from now, it’s going to be on your record.” What do you think of Hanson’s advice for the pop up-and-comers? Kevin Pietersen to leave Hampshire

• England batsman to exit county at end of season • ‘Hampshire is a great club and I wish them well for the future’ Kevin Pietersen has announced that he will leave Hampshire at the end of the season. The 29-year-old England batsman, who lives in London, wants to spend more time with his wife, Jessica, and their first child. Pietersen appeared for the county for the first time in two years in their Friends Provident t20 clash with Surrey on Sunday, but he will not renew his contract at the Rose Bowl. Pietersen said: “I have not had much opportunity to play for Hampshire but I want to thank the players, staff, chairman and fans, for the support I have had during my time at the Rose Bowl. Hampshire is a great club and I wish them well for the future.” The Hampshire chairman, Rod Bransgrove, said: “Given England’s critical dependence on KP in all forms of cricket, we have not seen anything like as much of him as we would have liked over the past six years. “He remains, however, a fantastic player and we wish him continued success wherever he plays and, in particular, we wish him, Jessica and Dylan every happiness.” Kevin Pietersen Hampshire Cricket guardian.co.uk

Christina Aguilera: What Should Her Next Move Be?

After soft first-week sales for Bionic, experts weigh in. By James Montgomery Photo: Ronald Martinez/ Getty Images Between the unexpectedly soft first-week sales for her comeback album, Bionic, constant criticism from Perez Hilton and a barrage of Lady Gaga comparisons , it hasn’t been an easy few weeks for Christina Aguilera. While the negative press is nothing new (remember the public outcry over her explicit “Dirrty” video? ), the less-than-stellar album sales, controversy over her sexed-up “Not Myself Tonight” video and the recent postponement of her tour are not adding up well. So what should she do next? We decided to pose the question to some experts, all of whom seem to agree that Aguilera has bucketloads of talent — but also has her work cut out for her. “She’s still under 30, she still has a fantastic voice, but I think her time has passed. I don’t know if it’s because she went away for a while, or because she tried to do something different with this project, but it feels a little crass and calculated,” Entertainment Weekly music critic Leah Greenblatt said. “From her choice of collaborators [The-Dream, Polow Da Don, Le Tigre] to her first single, it doesn’t feel fully organic. What’s missing so much with her this time out is that, while she can still sing the crap out of her songs, you don’t get a sense of vulnerability, or even really know who she is.” “She just seems a little confused, and that’s not like her, and it’s not what we want from her,” Julianne Shepherd, executive editor of The Fader magazine, added. “The image she’s been projecting, she just doesn’t seem comfortable doing it. She’s always done vamping, but now it’s like ‘I’m wearing these insane PVC outfits and singing to this music that I don’t relate to.’ No matter what she says, I don’t see her sitting around listening to old trance records.” Both agreed that Aguilera should essentially do her — focus on putting out the kind of songs that showcase her strengths — and stop chasing her competitors. “I think honestly, she’s trying to be a little too Gaga, and it’s not working for her,” Shepherd said. “She’s such a talented singer that she doesn’t need to do what everyone else is doing. It just seems too forced and too in the mold of the Gagas and the Rihannas of the world.” “She’s very much into the concept of ‘the future’ on this album, but the first single doesn’t sound like the future: It sounds like a song they’d play in a spin class, circa 1998,” Greenblatt said. “When you look at the other girls on the pop charts, it doesn’t feel fresh. It’s not compelling enough to pull herself away from the field. If you look at something like Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls,’ it’s a retro song, but it’s fun. There’s a heaviness to the Christina album. She may say she’s having fun, but you don’t believe her.” Both Greenblatt and Shepherd singled out the M.I.A. collaboration “Elastic Love” as a potential game-changer, a song that perhaps best sums up whatever it was Aguilera was hoping to achieve on Bionic, and one that might reinvigorate a public that’s grown tired of more of the same old pop. And both added that Christina should get back to basics (the title of her last album, as it happens), or maybe line up a new collaboration or two. “She’s got to re-calibrate her image, like do a fun video that treats sexuality as a garnish, not the entire meal,” Greenblatt said. “If she reins herself in and releases the right single, things might be OK. There are plenty of artists who hit it big with the second, third single, and she’s definitely big enough for that to happen here. People want her to succeed, she just needs to give us an iteration of herself that people like.” “I think that, maybe if she steps back a bit, tries to ease our of where she’s going, and trusts herself more, she will probably be okay. I think it’s just a bump in the road,” Shepherd added. “Or maybe she should collaborate with all of Young Money. That would probably work too.” What do you think Christina Aguilera’s next move should be? Let us know in the comments below! Related Artists Christina Aguilera
