Lady Gaga Confounds Fans With Born This Way Cover

“I don’t really understand what the album cover has to do with the theme of the album,” writes one fan. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Ian Gavan/ Getty Images Lady Gaga lives to confuse. From her interstellar stage costumes to her alien-like facial ridges and meat couture, Mother Monster keeps her fans on their toes. Take, for example, the recently revealed cover art for her hotly anticipated Born This Way album. In addition to instantly spawning a legion of has also done exactly what the pop star likely intended: set the Internet on fire with lively conversation, argument, conjecture and just a bit of unfocused rage. Here, then, are what a few of Gaga’s many opinionated followers had to say about the Born This Way cover art: “I don’t really understand what the album cover has to do with the theme of the album which is supposedly about being yourself (born this way),” wrote fan AB in reaction to an MTV News story on the image, a surreal assemblage depicting Gaga as the front fork of an “Easy Rider”-style chopper. “Obviously she wasn’t born to be a motorcycle lol also the font on the cover and the picture was just done really bad they could have done a much better job.” In a nod to the obsessive nature of Gaga fandom, however, Windrider countered with exactly why the cover makes perfect sense. “She foreshadowed this type of design perfectly in two remarks that her fans SHOULD be recalling by now: ‘I don’t want to be part of the machine. I want the machine to be part of me.’ From her appearance on Google Talk,” wrote Winrider, referencing Gaga’s Google interview with fans in early March. “The second is the entire discussion with the Haus in Gagavision #42 about the covers, when they talk about the DIY aspect of cover design (e.g., ‘Judas’) and doing something that is a ‘f— you’ to the over-commercialized graphic design aesthetic. And of course, it’s Gaga doing the very LAST thing you’d expect her to do.” Tamara totally agreed, dubbing the woman/machine blend a fitting metaphor for Gaga’s relentless professional drive. “Gaga is so energetic and does so very much all the time … she is a MACHINE, and an amazing, fast, stylish, revved up one at that!! Go Gaga! Nobody can top her,” she wrote. And there you have it. Nothing happens by chance in GagaLand, and her fans see meaning in every word and deed. That said, not everyone was convinced. “Not too fond of the album cover but honestly, not like many album covers from other musical stars are much better,” wrote Doodlebug. Vjuggalo, meanwhile, didn’t think it was creepy, just “uninspired” and, frankly, a hack photoshop job with “horrible” perspective and scaling. Others were just plain confused about what the motorcycle had to do with the album title (was Gaga born … a motorcycle?) and suggested other images that would have made more sense. “I’d rather have seen a naked newborn baby on the cover! At least it would fit,” said Cathy. “I remember when album covers actually meant something, and often matched the concept of the album or album title. It is the ugliest CD/album cover I’ve ever seen and Lady Gaga looks like she walked off a horror movie set.” Even Paul Teutul Jr., the “American Choppers” alumnus whose life is dedicated to creating monster machines, was on the fence about Gaga’s metal meld. “Looking at it, I would’ve made it more of an integration of her into the bike. It would be more seamless. In other words, it would be her and the bike morphed,” he told MTV News. “If you’re Born This Way , then it almost has to look kind of mermaid-ish, in the sense that there’s this fusion between the actual mechanical aspect and the human perspective. … It’s a little cut-and-paste looking. I would’ve done something even integrated throughout the bike that would’ve been more ‘Lady Gaga.’ ” What do you think of Gaga’s Born This Way album cover? Let us know in comments below. Odd Future Bridge The ‘Divide’ In Hip-Hop For The New West

Fader ‘s editor in chief calls the eclectic collective’s rise ‘a special moment.’ By Steven Roberts Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator Photo: Getty Images Over the past few months, Odd Future have exploded onto the music scene, leading the charge for the New West . The L.A.-based collective has found itself performing at the mtvU Woodies ; in the pages of nearly every skate, music and pop-culture publication; taking over “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” ; and even parodying itself in a Funny or Die spoof. While the last few months may have seemed like a whirlwind, the group isn’t an overnight-success story. Tyler, the Creator, Domo Genesis, Hodgy Beats, Left Brain and the rest of the gang have been making noise for quite some time. They’ve released more than 10 albums over the last two years and made significant waves underground and on the Internet, building a substantial, loyal following thanks to their attention to lyrical detail and “I don’t give a f—” attitude. “It seems like there’s been kind of a divide in hip-hop, where the people that are quote-unquote lyricists are very serious about their craft and don’t seem like they’re having very much fun at all,” said Andrew “Noz” Nosnitsky. “And the party-oriented stuff is more the guys like Waka Flocka and dudes who are like, ‘Nah, I don’t care about lyrics at all.’ ” Noz, who wrote OF’s Billboard cover story , said the group appeals to people on both sides of the fence. Tyler has been vocal about his love of Waka Flocka Flame and his disdain for overly critical hip-hop heads, but his crew’s lyrical prowess can’t be ignored. Fader Editor in Chief Matthew Schnipper agreed that OF’s mixture of bedlam and lyricism made for something special. “There’s always people making good things, and there’s always people running around trying to be ridiculous,” Schnipper told MTV News. “When the two things come together, it’s a special moment.” Schnipper also said Odd Future owed a lot of their success to new fans joining their circus. OF had released a bevy of free albums before they caught the mainstream’s attention, leaving newcomers with a lot to catch up on. “By the time everyone jumped on them, they had already had a full body of work that had already been on the Internet and around, so I think to some degree, that’s exciting, because here is somebody you didn’t know about, and then you can go to page 102 on a Tumblr and 4 million mixtapes. There’s a body of work there to be explored that’s all pretty solid.” Stick with us all week as MTV News turns the spotlight on the New West, including a special edition of “RapFix Live” with Cali’s own Tyga on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Halle Berry: “I’m Not The Marrying Kind, I’ve Been An Idiot”

See the rest here:

Though Halle Berry has been successful in her career – she can’t say the same about love. Her first marriage to baseball player David Justice ended after 5 years. Her second marriage to singer Eric Benet ended after 4 years. And her long-term relationship with model Gabriel Aubry, the father of her daughter Nahla, came to screeching halt after 5 years, as well. Halle recently told UK’s The Sun that she wishes she had known at 18 what she knows now: “I wish I had known then that I was not the marrying kind. It would have saved me a lot of time, heartache and grief over the years. I made all the wrong choices when it came to love. I have been an idiot. But, now, it is like a gift to myself – seeing more clearly and making better decisions. One thing was unavoidable. My father left us when I was young and that did affect my life. If I had a good father in my life, growing up, then I do not think I would have made the mistakes I made. I would not have been lost in love. I would have had a good role model and known what to look for. As it is, I had to find out about marriage from the men I’ve married. I have done it twice and I am not going to do it again. The traditional form of marriage is not for me. I did say, after my first marriage, ‘never again.’ I was burned and I was done. But I thought Eric really loved me, so I said ‘yes’ to his proposal.” While we’re all for people getting married, we respect Halle’s decision to call a spade a spade. Pharrell Joins Odd Future On Stage At Coachella [VIDEO]

See the rest here:

Odd Future ‘s Tyler, The Creator is probably riding high after rocking the Coachella stage this weekend.  His OFWGKTA collective of misfits were one of the weekend’s most highly anticipated performances. The crew was joined by one of Tyler’s heroes, Pharrell, who came out and performed N*E*R*D’s “Inside Of Clouds” with the group.  It’s been reported that Odd Future’s lone female member, Syd The Kid, was in tears after the performance. Unfortunately, OFWGKTA didn’t allow their performance to be streamed on the official Coachella livestream, but some crafty fans managed to catch some shaky footage of the group’s performance. New West Week Kicks Off With Odd Future, Casey Veggies, More

We take you inside the re-emerging L.A. hip-hop scene, including exclusive interviews with Dom Kennedy, Nipsey Hussle, Tyga and more. By Steven Roberts Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator Photo: Roger Kisby/Getty Images In recent years, Los Angeles hip-hop has lost its place at the top of the rap game. Dr. Dre’s once ubiquitous G-Funk sound has largely disappeared thanks in part to the emergence of other super-producers, the growing dominance of southern hip-hop and the good doctor’s own absence from the scene. As a result (with the exception of the likes of Game and Snoop Dogg), the region has been mostly dormant on a national scale — until now. In recent years, a new wave of hip-hop acts has emerged, awakening a newfound interest in L.A. hip-hop culture. These artists have each individually carved their own lane without the help of their rap forefathers, creating a sound in contrast to the G-Funk/ gangsta rap sensibility. Beginning Monday, April 18, MTV News will be highlighting some of the best of L.A.’s talented and diverse acts with our weeklong coverage of the New West. The week kicks off with a mixtape double-feature highlighting Nipsey Hussle’s The Marathon and Casey Veggies’ Sleeping in Class. The up-and-coming Casey Veggies has made a lot of noise in the last few months — all while trying to graduate high school. Our second piece is on rising star Nipsey Hussle, who many fans once hoped would singlehandedly bring back the West. Nips’ momentum has slowed a bit in recent months, but the MC won’t be deterred. Nipsey has since embarked on his own marathon, planning to take his career to the next level. One crew that has been pegged as “the next big thing” is the much-hyped Odd Future . OF have made waves in recent months, though, the question remains whether the 10-man collective can take the next step to the mainstream. Then there’s the four-man group known as Black Hippy, made up of Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul and School Boy Q. The foursome have made quite a bit of noise on the underground and it they seem to have already caught the attention of some important people in the industry. But it’s not just the MCs that have been making noise in L.A.; the city’s party and dance scene has also been the focus of hip-hop fans and spawned nationwide trends. The Jerk, the Dougie and Cat Daddy (all dances, of course) have not only brought about new crazes, but they’ve helped to shed light on how L.A. youth are reviving the culture. Finally, can Dom Kennedy, Pac Div and Young Money MC Tyga overcome their underdog status and make their mark outside of L.A.? Each act has been grinding for years, but can they defy the naysayers and prove they’re the cream of the crop? Before the New West Week kicks off, MTV News will be gearing up by talking to a few heavy hitters about the scene. The Doggfather Snoop Dogg talks to us about how the New West MCs have made a name for themselves without a co-sign from the old guard and also shares a little bit about his new artist, Pilot. And Renaissance man Chris Brown opens up to us on Friday about how he got inspiration from L.A.’s party and dance scene while rejuvenating his career. All week, we’ll be bringing you interviews with these artists to watch, breaking it down into four categories: the Black Hippy, the Future, Up and Coming, the Party and the Underdog. Each day, MTV News’ Sway and our hip-hop beat team will focus on a theme and recap the following day. Starting Monday, stick with us all week as MTV News turns the spotlight on the New West, the next wave of hip-hop acts helping to restore faith in the L.A. rap scene. From groups like Odd Future to rising MCs like Dom Kennedy, we’ll bring you up close and personal to these artists as they carve their own lanes in the post-gangsta rap era.
