Pete Wentz Brings Black Cards To SXSW

Bassist showcases his new ‘poptimistic’ project on Wednesday night. By James Montgomery The Black Cards perform at SXSW on Wednesday Photo: Daniel Boczarski/ Getty Images AUSTIN, Texas — Is it possible that Pete Wentz is really a poptimist? Despite his dark bangs and Black Cloud missives, his best Fall Out Boy songs were always, at their very core, spiky slabs of pure pop. And no matter what may be going on in his personal life these days, his new project Black Cards seems to be solely focused around the idea of optimism. So yes, perhaps he has been — and always will be — a poptimist at heart. And that much was certainly clear during the Cards’ Wednesday night performance at South by Southwest, a 45-minute set that was as heavy on sparkly synths and bubbly dub as it was on, well, pure poptimism. Wentz even said as much himself, telling the crowd that his new mission is to “broadcast sunshine,” and that “sometimes it’s good to have summer all the time.” He declared, “It’s good to be onstage and see people smiling,” slapped high fives with strangers, and closed the set by inviting everyone in Austin club Maggie Mae’s to join him and his bandmates onstage for an impromptu dance party. And in keeping with the spirit of the night, nearly everyone in the place obliged. And in between the sunshine and the smiling, Wentz spent the majority of the Black Cards’ set pogoing around the stage, thumbing out wobbly, delirious bass lines, and generally looking happier than he has in years. In fact, he seemed perfectly content to let someone else have the spotlight — the fans, his friends in the audience (most of whom received shout-outs) and, of course, frontwoman Bebe Rexha, who was more than willing to accept. All hips and lips and breathy exclamations, Rexha quickly proved to be the perfect foil for Wentz, whether she was getting low during the Cards’ dubbier, clubbier numbers (“Dirty Little Fingerprints,” “Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Fame”), vamping it up (on upcoming single “Summer Nights,” when she removed a pair of handcuffs from her belt, snapped them on the wrist of a fan and then serenaded him in sultry fashion), or just plain old belting it out (on a cover of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy”). Patrick Stump she most certainly isn’t, and perhaps that’s for the best. Because, really, the Black Cards’ SXSW set wasn’t about Pete Wentz’s past so much as it was about his future. With his new project, he not only appears to be having a blast, he just may have stumbled onto something big. By combining dub, a touch of rock-steady and a whole lot of pop, he’s uncovered a recipe for something new … for him, for his fans, for everybody. “Summer Nights” seems destined to be a radio staple, “Dominos” is a starry burst of synths and bass, and performance-closing “A Club Called Heaven” probably would’ve gotten the fans dancing onstage even if Wentz hadn’t invited them to. It was, in short, poptimism, pure and simple. Not exactly new, not entirely old, with Black Cards, Pete Wentz may very well end up proving the old adage correct: Optimists are nostalgic about the future. Simon Cowell Says He Won’t ‘Compare’ ‘X Factor’ To ‘American Idol’

Cowell tells MTV News, ‘The rules are off, basically,’ when it comes to his new show. By Jocelyn Vena Simon Cowell Photo: Vince Bucci/ Getty Images Simon Cowell helped bring back America’s love of a good reality-singing competition as one of the original judges on “American Idol.” Now, he’s preparing to bring another reality competition show, “X Factor,” Stateside, and he says there’s only one way to explain what it is. On Monday, MTV News caught up with Cowell, who said his “X Factor” won’t be like that other show. “Well, I would say that I’m not gonna compare it to ‘Idol,’ ” Cowell said. “It’s started from scratch. It’s a show that, first of all, has to be relevant; it has to appeal to younger viewers as well as older viewers. It should be representative of what’s happening on the charts at the moment, but in a nutshell you can be 12 years old, you can be 50 years old, you can be in a group and the rules are off, basically.” With auditions set to take place beginning March 27 in Los Angeles, fans may be wondering how Simon will make the show appealing to American audiences. “I’ve gone into it, first of all, that it is an American show and whatever happened on the U.K. last year is gone,” he said. “This is an American competition for American contestants. From a pride point of view, they want to make this the best show they’ve ever done.” The judges, Cowell noted , will have a lot to do with the show’s success. “I have to make sure we have a lot of Americans working on the show to begin with,” he said. “I’ve got to have people on the panel with me who can judge American talent because I’m 51 years old, I’m British and we’ve got people as young as 14 entering this competition. So I’ve got to make sure I’ve got people sitting alongside me who genuinely know what they’re talking about so that we don’t lose somebody in the audition process.” Are you eager to see what Simon does with “X Factor”? Tyler, The Creator Says He Kept Odd Future Secret From His Mom

‘She found out through other people,’ Tyler tells MTV News. By Steven Roberts, with reporting by Christopher Smith Odd Future’s Tyler, the Creator Photo: MTV News Odd Future’s de facto leader, Tyler, the Creator, was blessed with a haunting, captivating voice, the perfect fit for his witty, yet often uncomfortable, lyrics. His voice will be on full display when he and his Odd Future groupmates take the stage to perform at the 2011 mtvU Woodies on Wednesday night (March 16). But what fans may not know is that Tyler is also a producer. Along with MellowHype’s Left Brain, Tyler has produced a majority of Odd Future’s rich but brief catalog. A photo recently surfaced of Left Brain and Tyler in the studio with Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes. Both Left Brain and Tyler’s work is deeply influenced by the once-ubiquitous production duo, and Tyler has made no secret of their impact on his life, even tweeting about meeting with Pharrell.

Miley Cyrus Snapped Stumbling Because Of Paparazzi Lights

‘Party in the U.S.A.’ star was blinded by flashes after meeting with producer Dr. Luke, sources tell MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus (file) Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage When photos of Miley Cyrus outside of Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont hit the Internet on Tuesday (March 15), gossip blogs claimed the star was stumbling around the L.A.-area hotspot after a night of partying. But sources close to Cyrus tell MTV News the rumors are all wrong. Miley was in a meeting with producer Dr. Luke at the hotel, where they discussed writing music for other artists. Luke and Cyrus worked together on her hit “Party in the U.S.A.” According to sources, the teen superstar was actually blinded by the flashing lights of the paparazzi, not stumbling, as had been reported earlier on Tuesday. Last week, Cyrus made headlines defending her mom against paparazzi gathered outside of the California Chicken Cafe in West Hollywood, California. She confronted one of the photographers, telling him, “You just hit my mom with your camera, don’t you ever do that again. You just almost hurt my mom. Don’t you ever even think about it, for real.” Cyrus has often expressed her displeasure with the celebrity photogs. “I just [want] people to know, I think in pictures I always look upset. It’s because these cameras are following me. I just think it’s really kind of unfair,” she shared in a September video blog. “I know there are some people that maybe like that attention, but I’m not one of them. I really just want to be able to go on walks and enjoy where I live. … The paparazzi really frustrate me, and it makes me really upset that I’m being followed around by men that I don’t know, and for anyone else, it would be considered stalking. I don’t know who those guys are. I don’t know if they’re good guys or bad guys. I don’t necessarily care; I don’t want anyone following me.” In spite of the unwanted media attention, Cyrus is already having a good 2011. She recently showed off her funny side as a host on “Saturday Night Live” and she has two flicks, “LOL” and “So Undercover,” set for release this year. Related Artists Miley Cyrus

Richard Hatch Sent Back to Prison

Richard Hatch, winner of Survivor and current contestant on Celebrity Apprentice , is going to jail for not paying taxes for the money he won on Survivor . The reality star has served more than three years for tax evasion already. He has been under supervised release and was supposed to re-file his taxes. Hatch, who apparently can’t outwit, outplay or outlast the Internal Revenue Service, failed to do so again and did not fork over taxes from 2000-01. Richard needs to Hatch a plan to hire an accountant. “It needs to be a severe punishment,” U.S. District Court Judge William Smith told Hatch. “That’s the only thing that will deter you in the future.” Hatch was also ordered to serve 26 months of supervised release. During that time, a quarter of his gross income will be paid directly to the IRS. Hatch, who now owes an estimated $2 million, reports to prison Monday. There’s a lesson in this, people. Withholding. It works pretty effectively.

Odd Future Say ‘People Just Choose To Be Offended’

Tyler the Creator’s L.A. collective lands Billboard SXSW cover. By Alvin Blanco Odd Future on the cover of Billboard magazine Photo: Billboard L.A. collective Odd Future are continuing to bolster their rep as hip-hop’s latest phenomenon, landing on the cover of Billboard magazine . Billed as its South by Southwest 2011 preview issue, the magazine’s cover line reads, “Shock rappers, skate kids, rule breakers, content creators, DIY evangelists, disrupters, Odd Future just may be the future of the music business.” The feature story, written by Andrew “Noz” Nosnitsky, details Odd Future’s seemingly meteoric rise and evaluates their chances of continued success. Much has been said about Odd Future’s music being offensive, thanks to liberal doses of violence, sexism and bugged-out videos. “People just choose to be offended by stuff,” Syd the Kid, the group’s sole female member, told Billboard . “If they are, then that sucks and I’m sorry, but they don’t have to keep listening. Words are words. They don’t act out what they say, they just say it.” The motley crew of brash and unfiltered MCs also known as OFWGKTA (short for Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) includes rap duo MellowHype (Hodgy Beats, Left Brain), Earl Sweatshirt, Domo Genesis and others, with Tyler the Creator as its most-prominent act and de facto leader. MellowHype recently signed a deal with Fat Possum Records to formally release their BlackenedWhite album this summer, and Tyler the Creator signed a one-album deal with XL Recordings to release Goblin in April. Despite sold-out shows at small venues and labels clamoring to align with the Odd Future crew, Billboard notes that their actual sales have been only modest. “Sandwitches” and “Yonkers,” the only songs from the group (credited to Tyler the Creator) available on iTunes, have sold only about 6,000 and 12,000 units, respectively. Whether Odd Future is even seeking commercial notoriety is debatable. But their youthful exuberance and confidence is indisputable. “I could be a complete failure come June,” Tyler told Billboard . ” Goblin could brick. Everyone could hate it. The hype could be over. I could be back to trying to fill out junior-college [applications] … But I don’t see that happening. I see Grammys.” Odd Future are scheduled to perform at the 2011 MTV Woodie Awards , airing live Wednesday on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU. Do you expect Odd Future to have commercial success? Recently released photographs from Eva Braun#39;s personal picture albums reveal new dimensions of the woman who was Adolf Hitler#39;s longtime girlfriend and, in their last, frantic hours together, his wife. Braun became the central woman in Hitler#39;s life after the 1931 suicide of Geli Raubal, the future Führer#39;s 23-year-old niece (and rumored lover). By all accounts, Eva was an unpretentious companion for the Nazi leader, but also a woman at once frivolous and vain — unsurprising chara
