Jason Dufner Wins PGA Championship, Takes Home Oak Tree

One of the most popular members of the PGA Tour is now on top of the sport. It’s not often a major golf championship is secured with bogeys on the final two holes, but PGA winner Jason Dufner will take it any day of the week. Not only was competition doing the same thing, but the 36-year-old had bested the field for the first 70 holes of the event, giving himself wiggle room. As a result, he is now a major champion, no longer known predominantly for his near-miss at the 2011 PGA, or the Internet meme known as Dufnering . Jason Dufner Wins PGA Championship A fan favorite on Twitter and among his fellow golf pros, Dufner’s 2013 PGA Championship win officially etches his name in the sport’s storied history. In addition to the Wanamaker trophy, Dufner and wife Amanda went home with some acorns and an oak tree sapling from the Rochester, N.Y. grounds. They plan to plant them on their 50 acre farm in Auburn, Ala.

Melissa Gorga on Teresa Giudice: I’ve Got Her Back!

Teresa Giudice may be in serious legal trouble, with 39 counts of financial fraud and a possible 50-year prison sentence hanging over her head. But at least The Real Housewives of New Jersey star can find comfort in an unlike ally: rival sister-in-law Melissa Gorga. The reality star told Andy Cohen last night on Watch What Happens Live that she and Giudice “are in a much better place than we’ve been in a long time.” “I’ve reached out and spoke to Teresa [since the indictment],” Gorga told the host. “She knows I have her back, and that the kids, of course, are the number-one priority, and that’s what [husband] Joe and I are always here for… no matter what.” Giudice fled to Florida over the weekend (as pictured above) and appeared at a red carpet event at Pangea nightclub. She’s next due in court on August 14 – and Gorga says the “key” thing for the family is the bond between her three kids and the four Teresa shares with her husband, Joe Giudice. “That’s the most important part,” Melissa said. “My husband [only] has one sister.” Teresa Giudice Fraud Case Bethenny Frankel on Teresa Giudice

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’: Why Casting Jim Carrey And/Or Adam Sandler Would Be A Smart Marvel Move

If you need further evidence that Marvel is winning the battle against DC on the comic-book movie front, consider the latest Internet chatter about  the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.   Latino Review , which knows how to work that fan boy beat, reports that Marvel has inquired about the availability of both Jim Carrey  and Adam Sandler for the movie, which is slated to hit theaters on Aug. 1, 2014. It’s unclear what roles Marvel envisions these actors playing, but Latino Review and other blogs have been guessing Rocket Raccoon (whose creation was inspired by the Beatles’s White Album song “Rocky Raccoon”)  and the tree-like Groot are the most plausible, since both are reportedly in the Guardians of the Galaxy script. Given these two superheroes’ non-human appearances, they’ll probably exist as computer-generated characters , and if I’m doing the casting, I’d want the shape-shifting Carrey to play Groot because the character bears a resemblance to the Grinch, which the actor already played (in Ron Howard’s obnoxious adaptation of the Dr. Seuss book), and Sandler as Rocket. Sandler’s biggest hit in a long time was as the voice of the CGI Count Dracula in Hotel Transylvania last year, so I suspect he’ll be up for the gig. Even if Marvel casts just one of these guys, or some equally funny dude,  it’s an astute move because, while the costumes and action sequences in these comic-book movies are fun, it’s the humor that gives them soul and makes them — so far — superior to the DC equivalent. Yes, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy was exceptional, but, given the choice, I’ll take Robert Downey Jr.’s  satisfyingly smart-ass portrayal of Tony Stark and Iron Man every time. Is ABC Mulling Star Wars TV Series?

We’re all waiting with baited (and force-assisted) breath until 2015 to see if the cinematic return to the Star Wars galaxy will make the taste of midi-chlorians go away, but could it be that we might first see our first post- George Lucas lightsabers on the smallscreen? Comments from ABC Entertainment President Paul Lee indicate that yes, maybe, possibly, this may be the case. You might remember a few years back when Lucasfilm kept talking up a live action Star Wars series? That show, which would have been spearheaded by former Lucasfilm honcho Rick McCallum, would have been set during the 19 year period between the end of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope . Alas, though reportedly 50 episodic scripts were created for the series, the series proved too expensive to produce, and Lucasfilm’s ownership meant too few profits for any network that might choose to fund it. The series was, eventually, quietly killed off. But speaking to Entertainment Weekly , Lee confirmed that with Disney (which owns ABC) now having secured control of the Star Wars franchise, ABC is contemplating resurrecting the concept. “We’d love to do something with Lucasfilm, we’re not sure what yet,” Lee told EW, but he stressed nothing is currently under development. “We haven’t even sat down with them. We’re going to look at [the live-action series], we’re going to look at all of them, and see what’s right. We weren’t able to discuss this with them until [the acquisition] closed and it just closed. It’s definitely going to be part of the conversation.” If ABC goes forward with a Star Wars TV show, it could be the beginning of a serious cross-branding block of programming, along with Joss Whedon’s planned S.H.I.E.L.D. series. It also might mine territory not previously covered in filmed Star Wars fiction. As EW notes, aspects of the original, aborted series were apparently recycled for the upcoming ‘adult’ themed game Star Wars 1313 , including the focus on the seedier side of life in a galaxy far, far away. It also bore a striking resemblance to the Battlestar Galactica prequel series Caprica , in that it would have been a family crime drama of sorts. (Notably, BSG reboot maestro Ron D. Moore was once attached to the series.) Obviously, we can’t possibly pretend to know what the so-far not developed show would even look like; chances are Disney is simply keeping their options open. But should they go for it, I personally hope they don’t resurrect the concept McCallum had originally planned. I’m personally burnt out on prequels, not just because George Lucas made such a mess of it, but because generally speaking the backstory is always less interesting than the stuff that it informs. We already know about everything we need to about life before Luke, Leia and Han saved the galaxy from the evil empire. I’d rather see the wishes of the fans more deliberately pandered to, and set any potential show in the aftermath of the successful rebellion. Showing how citizens from across the galaxy pick up the pieces as the Republic struggles to rebuild would not only allow for a vast diversity of stories, it would also have the benefit of being surprising. We wouldn’t lose the ability to get attached to any character because their fates are largely sealed by what we know from the current trilogy. Better still, from a business perspective, it’d be a great way to build interest in episodes 7, 8 and 9. Events of the TV show could easily provide backstory for those films without treading on any of the same ground. It would also be as ambitious as the Marvel movie universe’s carefully constructed, shared continuity, and from a nerd’s perspective, that sounds like the best thing ever, even if I’m not yet ready to forgive Star Wars for “NOOOOOOOOOO!” What about you, readers? Let us know what you’d like to see in a hypothetical Star Wars show in comments. Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man’ Gets A 2015 Release Date

Marvel hero Hank Pym AKA Ant-Man will get his shot at the big screen in 2015, Disney announced today as they updated their slate of upcoming films. Also revealed: You’ll be able to see Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 in 3-D. Yawn . Let’s hear more about Ant-Man ! I’ll be honest: Even after Disney/Marvel unveiled the Ant-Man logo card at Comic-Con alongside the likes of Iron Man 3 , Thor: The Dark World , and Guardians of the Galaxy I had my doubts that Edgar Wright’s long-gestating superhero pic would make it to the screen in my lifetime. Now that it’s got a release date — albeit one in 2015, which is only three years away but feels like the distant future (seriously, how are we almost to the year 2015?!) — it finally feels like Ant-Man is happening. Also announced in Disney’s press release were dates for the Phineas and Ferb movie (moved up from 2014 to July 28, 2013), Saving Mr. Banks (December 20, 2013), DisneyNature’s Bears (April 18, 2014), “Disney Animation Untitled” (November 7, 2014) and “Pixar Animation Untitled” (November 25, 2015). Ant-Man , meanwhile, is slated to hit theaters on November 6, 2015. And while it’s unlikely since it came from an entirely different character who inherited the Ant-Man legacy (I know, I know), I’m holding out hope for a few scenes like this, because LOL.

TALKBACK: Which Avengers Superhero Should Get The Next Standalone Spin-Off?

With this week’s release of The Avengers on DVD/Blu-ray and Marvel’s Kevin Feige entertaining all sorts of speculative queries as to the future of the superhero franchise, let’s put it to the people: Which Avenger do you want to see step into the spotlight in a standalone sequel after Thor and Captain America? Marvel Studios already have the next many years’ worth of superhero outings penciled in — Captain America 2 , Thor 2 , Guardians of the Galaxy , Ant-Man , and Avengers 2 — but Feige gave some fans hope for a Hulk adventure in a recent interview with MTV . “Do I think Hulk can carry a movie and be as entertaining as he was in Avengers ? I do believe that. I do believe he absolutely could. We certainly are not even going to attempt that until Avengers 2 ,” said Feige. “So there’s a lot of time to think about it.” Mark Ruffalo’s wry Hulk was an ensemble standout, especially after Ed Norton and Eric Bana’s dour, serious incarnations — perfect candidate for the next standalone, no? (Third time’s the charm?) Then again, could he compete with demand for a full feature dedicated to Scarlett Johansson’s sultry Black Widow? If hers includes a few lengthy drunken hookups with Hawkeye, you know who gets my vote. [ MTV ] Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .
