NBA Playoff Preview: Can The Heat Win It All?

See the article here:

After 82 hard fought games it is time for the NBA’s ”second season.”  This is what fans have been waiting for ever since LeBron James stunned the basketball world by announcing he would be taking his talents to South Beach. While the team he left behind (Cleveland Cavaliers) went on to win 42 fewer games without him (19-63 down from 61-21 with James a year ago), James only went on to finish second in the league in scoring and led the Heat to 58 wins, putting him in the discussion for his third straight MVP award. Ask James and he’ll tell you that means nothing. After being accused of quitting on the Cavs last season against Boston and going out in unsportsmanlike fashion to Orlando in 2009, King James wants everyone to witness him carry the Heat to the promised land and put all the doubters to rest. To do that he will have to do what he couldn’t do at the end of last season and 3 out of 4 times this season with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in tow: beat the Boston Celtics. Will he succeed? Check out my predictions on this and the rest of what promises to be one of the best NBA Playoffs ever. EASTERN CONFERENCE FIRST ROUND 1 Chicago Bulls vs 8 Indiana Pacers When the Indiana Pacers fought to make the playoffs they were probably expecting to face the Miami Heat, who they beat earlier in the year. Instead they got a Bulls team clicking on all cylinders led by MVP front runner Derrick Rose . The Bulls won 62 games this season and locked up home court advantage throughout the entire playoffs. The Bulls only won 60 games five other times in franchise history (hint: all in the 1990′s) and each time they went on to win the NBA title. Read on to see if I think they will make it six, but they will get off to a good start. Prediction:  The Bulls finally get out of the first round (not being a #8 seed helps that way) in a sweep 4-0. 4 Orlando Magic vs 5 Atlanta Hawks The Atlanta Hawks won the season series 3 games to 1, however I am not sold on an Atlanta team that lost by more than 30 points on their home floor three different times. Al Horford has made strides this ear but he is not a true center and will be overmatched by Orlando center Dwight Howard . Atlanta is a mystery to me. They play well enough to be a mid-level playoff team (more a testament to the weak Eastern Conference) but you never expect them to progress to title contender. They are getting no respect and it feels like they don’t really care. I can’t take a team seriously if the road team’s fans are louder than the home fans in your own gym. Joe Johnson is a quiet superstar and may need to change that perception (especially since he signed a huge contract to stay for five years when he could have went elsewhere) if the Hawks are going to go anywhere in the future. I just want to see him get mad and carry the Hawks for once. It won’t happen this year, however. Not even this round. Prediction: Orlando shows regular season matchup is a fluke taking out the Hawks 4-2. 3 Boston Celtics vs 6 New York Knicks This will be the most interesting series in the first round of the East playoffs. These two teams haven’t met in the playoffs since 1990 where the Knicks upset the favored Celtics in a best of 5 series by winning the final three games. This current crop of Knickerbockers have the tools to repeat history. The loss of Kendrick Perkins will be glaring for Boston if Shaquille O’Neal is not productive coming off a calf injury. The Knicks have the best closer in the game in Carmelo Anthony and a confident Amare Stoudamire . Chauncey Billups’ championship experience will help the Knicks, but will they play any semblance of consistent defense?  Paul Pierce , Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen have been down this road before but never without Perkins. Rajon Rondo the best player on the team a year ago is reportedly playing hurt and is still sulking over Perkins’ departure. This will be the longest series of the first round only because the Knicks potent offense will win a few games by default, especially over a Celtics team that has the lowest scoring average in the entire league (90.2 ppg) since early March. Boston has been doubted before and they took all that talk of their demise all the way to the NBA Finals last year. They still play something called good defense and will win the series in seven only if Shaq is a factor and Rondo returns to form, otherwise the Knicks pull the upset. Prediction: Boston has yet to lose to the Knicks this season and have come too far to go home early. They will move on 4 games to 3. 2 Miami Heat vs 7 Philadelphia 76ers With all the hype, drama and media coverage that bordered on overkill (there are at least two national media outlets that have season-long sections dedicated to the daily exploits of The Miami Heat — ESPN’s “Heat Index” and USA Today’s “Heat Check”) The Maimi Heat’s season starts now. All eyes will be on the new Big 3 of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to see if LeBron can back up the tough talk from the narcissistic pre-season coronation/pep rally in July that introduced the trio to the Miami faithful. They get off to a great start against Philly who are a nice story, but will not be able to match up to the firepower of the Heat. Prediction: Heat burn the Sixers 4 to 1 . EASTERN CONFERENCE SEMIFINALS 1 Chicago Bulls vs 4 Orlando Magic This series is a tough one to call. The Magic are playoff tested. The return of Hedo Turkoglu along with the experience of Jason Richardson (a Western Conference finalist last season in Phoenix), Gilbert Arenas , and Jameer Nelson will be a factor in this series. Chicago may be the #1 seed, but losing to Orlando would not be considered an upset in my opinion. Orlando will win this series, however I give Chicago an outside chance only if Derrick Rose gets Dwight Howard in foul trouble with his signature acrobatic drives to the cup thus leaving the middle open for Joakim Noah and Carlos Boozer to go to work. Orlando has their own point to prove with Miami getting all the press and prestige in the “sunshine state” and their veteran leadership will trump youth this year, not for lack of effort from Mr. Rose. Prediction: Orlando stops the Bulls 4-2 2 Miami Heat vs 3 Boston Celtics When the NBA season tipped off in October with the first installment of Heat-Celtics everyone watching figured this would be a preview of the Eastern Conference Finals. Unfortunately the Chicago Bulls had something to say about where these two teams would end up so the showdown comes one round early. I hate to beat a dead horse, but the absence of Kendrick Perkins effectively brought Boston back to the pack in the East. Miami reportedly loved the deal as shown in the last regular season meeting where Miami did as they pleased in the paint en route to a 100-77 win. The series won’t be as lopsided as the depth of the Celtics bench will keep the games competitive. Again, the effectiveness of Shaq (or any big other than Kevin Garnett) will swing the series. Former Heat Jermaine O’Neal will have something to prove in this series against the team that let him walk and will have a decent series. Prediction: In another seven game marathon, the Miami Heat will upset the Celtics 4-3 and send Doc Rivers into retirement. Let the finger pointing (and rebuilding) begin in Beantown. EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS 2 Miami Heat vs 4 Orlando Magic Ironically this will the toughest test for the Heat. Dwight Howard will be the only thing standing in the way of a trip to the NBA Finals for LeBron James and the Heat. For the Heat to win this series they have to get contributions from a bench that has been invisible all season. The Heat should have Udonis Haslem back by this point giving them a much needed body to bang with Howard, but the three-headed monster of Erick Dampier, Joel Anthony, and Zydrunis Ilgauskas have to use their fouls to frustrate Howard. Technical fouls accumulated in the regular season are wiped clean in the post season so unless Howard has a major meltdown that gives him 7 techs, he isn’t missing any time. Unlike the Bulls series, getting Howard in foul trouble will not matter as the Magic have proven they can beat the Heat without Howard touching the ball on offense (as witnessed in the classic comeback from a 24-point deficit back in March). LeBron may have flashbacks to the 2009 Conference Finals with Turkoglu alongside Richardson, Arenas, and (wait for it) Ryan Anderson taking the place of Rashard Lewis behind the 3-point arc. The Magic live and die by the 3 pointer and if they are on it could extinguish the Heat. LeBron has personal incentive (proving Orlando general manager Otis Smith wrong) to make the Magic disappear, but his exploits along with Wade and Bosh may not be enough without consistent play from the Ringo Starr’s on the bench. Prediction: Orlando upsets ”The Heatles” denying LeBron a trip to the NBA Finals 4-2 in year one of “The Process”. WESTERN CONFERENCE FIRST ROUND 1 San Antonio Spurs vs 8 Memphis Grizzlies This is the matchup the Grizzlies wanted for reasons only known by the team itself. It has been reported that Memphis tanked the last few games to assure themselves of the 8th seed and avoid facing the Lakers. Spurs forward Tim Duncan responded simply ”we see what’s happening”. Uh oh, bulletin board material. This series won’t go more than five. The Grizz are still without their star Rudy Gay, lost for the year with a shoulder injury, and while super sub Tony Allen has been playing out of his mind the last few weeks and Memphis boasts the fourth best record in the Western Conference since the All-Star break, the Spurs have their own Big 3 in the aforementioned Duncan, Tony Parker , and Manu Ginobli . Even though Ginobli hyperextended his elbow in the regular season finale, they won’t need him in this round. Prediction: Spurs move on 4-1 4 Oklahoma City Thunder vs 5 Denver Nuggets The Denver Nuggets traded away the face of their franchise and didn’t miss a beat en route to a 50-win season. If that doesn’t put coach George Karl in the discussion for Coach of the Year I don’t know what does. The Nuggets have no standout superstar yet share the ball effectively in a way not seen since the Detroit Pistons of the 2000′s. The Thunder have two superstars in the NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook . OKC also has Kendrick Perkins. It is hard to believe one man can swing the balance of power from one conference to the next, but it goes to show how important a serviceable big man is to a championship contender. Perkins brings the toughness that can offset Nene and any antics by Kenyon Martin.  The players that came over in the trade from the Knicks will be fun to watch, but the Thunder’s defense will prove to be too daunting. Prediction: Thunder bury the Nuggets 4-2 3 Dallas Mavericks vs 6 Portland Trailblazers This will be as exciting as the Knicks-Celtics series. The Dallas Mavericks have been a Jekyll and Hyde team known to excel in the regular season only to flame out in the playoffs. Their inability to get out of the first round the last few years is the reason why former Mavs coach Avery Johnson is currently wasting away in New Jersey. Since blowing a chance to go up 3-0 on the Miami Heat in the 2006 NBA Finals, the Mavericks have not gotten past the second round, losing in the first round twice. Not having Caron Butler hurts but Shawn Marion and Jason Terry lead a formidable bench which will be needed to help Dirk Nowitzki . Portland has a snubbed all-star in LaMarcus Aldridge an emerging star in Wesley Matthews , the high energy of Gerald Wallace , and their star player Brandon Roy currently coming off the bench (?!). They have not moved past the first round since 2000, but they will give Dallas all they can handle. Prediction: Dallas hears the whispers of another collapse and because of it they will respond to the perceived disrespect by advancing in a tough series 4-3. 2 Los Angeles Lakers vs 7 New Orleans Hornets Andrew Bynum only has a bone bruise in his hyperextended right knee. That means he will not miss significant time, if any at all in the playoffs. That is bad news for the rest of the Western Conference. The Lakers may not even need Bynum in this series as the Hornets will be without star forward David West. That leaves Emeka Okafor on an island against the size of the Lakers. Chris Paul will do his best but the Hornets are undersized and overmatched against the two-time defending champs. Prediction: Lakers win 4-1. WESTERN CONFERENCE SEMIFINALS 1 San Antonio Spurs vs 4 Oklahoma City Thunder The experience of the Spurs and the multiple big men (Antonio McDyess, Dejuan Blair, Duncan) they can throw at Kendrick Perkins and Serge Ibaka combined with the neutrilization of Kevin Durant’s offense by Manu Ginobli will make the difference here. This series may go the distance as Durant and Westbrook try to set up a rematch with the Lakers in the Conference Finals, but the Spurs will prevail. Prediction: Spurs win 4-3 2 Los Angeles Lakers vs 3 Dallas Mavericks The Mavericks got the first round monkey off their back, but reality will set in. The Mavericks will not have an answer for Pau Gasol , LaMar Odom and Bynum and there is a guy by the name of Kobe Bryant who will command a double team at some point. While Dallas has come a long way defensively they rely on their offense to dictate the pace of the game. Prediction: Lakers advance 4-2 WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS 1 San Antonio Spurs vs 2 Los Angeles Lakers Unlike the Eastern Conference, the West holds to form with the two best teams meeting for the chance to play in the Finals. San Antonio, like Boston, defied age and logic during the regular season being the last team to lose 10 games in a year where they were supposed to be in the middle of the pack. These teams are evenly matched, their regular season was a wash. Both teams have game changing superstars and a deep bench. It comes down to Kobe and Phil. Kobe has the nastiest killer instinct since Jordan and I can’t see him losing this series. Losing the #1 seed to the Spurs is just another challenge for the Black Mamba which is a bad omen for San Antonio. Prediction: Lakers go back to the NBA Finals after a hard fought 7 game slug fest 4-3. NBA FINALS Orlando Magic vs Los Angeles Lakers Probably not the team from Florida Commissioner David Stern had in mind to face the Lakers in the NBA Finals, but in a rematch of the 2009 Finals the experience of the Lakers produces the same result. It was Kobe Bryant’s mission statement to send coach Phil Jackson off with his fourth three-peat while simultaneously earning his sixth ring tying him with Michael Jordan. Again, the challenge is what drives Bryant and his will to win elevates the rest of the team to victory. Prediction: Lakers complete the three-peat 4-2, possibly pushing Dwight Howard closer to Tinseltown after next season. **Bonus** AWARDS SEASON : MVP: Derrick Rose (Runner-up: LeBron James) Coach of the Year: Tom Thibodeau, Chicago (Runner-up: Gregg Poppovich, Spurs) Rookie of the Year: Blake Griffin (Runner-up: John Wall) Defensive Player of the Year: Dwight Howard (Runner-up: no one worth mentioning) Sixth Man of the Year: LaMar Odom (Runner-up: Jamal Crawford) 5 Reasons The Miami Heat Will NOT Win The NBA Title This Season

Paul McDonald Eliminated From ‘American Idol’

Haley Reinhart and Stefano Langone join him in the bottom three. By Gil Kaufman Paul McDonald Photo: FOX Movie night was not kind to many of the final eight on “American Idol.” Despite raves from the judges, the general consensus outside the IdolDome was that there wasn’t a whole lot to cheer for and that Randy, Steven and Jennifer hadn’t learned the harsh lessons of ToscanoGate , i.e., they were still treating all the contestants like they were already superstars and giving each one a gold star for effort. One of their favorites among a group of favorites, picker-and-grinner Paul McDonald, went down on Thursday night’s (April 14) elimination show, marking the first time this season that a man has left the program and the exit of yet another apparent front-runner whose commercial prospects seem brighter than a number of the remaining contestants. McDonald, who seemed a bit off his game and looked as if he might be ready to leave while performing Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll” on Wednesday night, took the news in stride, saying “it’s OK, it’s OK” when host Ryan Seacrest said he was bummed to see the Nashville native go. The show opened with Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina singing a duet on Grammy-winning country trio Lady Antebellum’s “American Honey,” once again making sweet, down-home music together. Also sounding nice together were Casey Abrams and Haley Reinhart, who gave one of their best efforts to date on the jazz standard “Moanin’,” with both of them working out their best scatting and growling action. After an impressive 53 million votes — clearly viewers got the message that they needed to show up for their favorites — all four came center stage to hear the results. Sudden front-runner McCreery was waved to safety, as were Alaina and Abrams, while Reinhart made another trip to the bottom three, continuing the march of female contestants to the danger zone. Reinhart was done in by a shouty cover of Blondie’s “Call Me” that earned some of the only negative remarks on Wednesday night. The remaining four boys — Jacob Lusk, Stefano Langone, Paul McDonald and James Durbin — played a medley of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Sounds of Silence” and a chipper “Mrs. Robinson,” (in)secure in the knowledge that two of them would be in the bottom three. Even with his wild-and-crazy cover of “Heavy Metal,” Durbin was safe once again, while Langone was sent back to the bottom three after yet another sappy performance, this time of Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road.” After landing in the bottom three last week, Lusk was ushered to safety, while McDonald’s spirited “Old Time Rock and Roll” just didn’t connect with voters. Breaking the cycle of four female eliminations in a row, Reinhart was sent to safety, while McDonald got the short straw. The cool dude in a loose mood kept smiling and was more than happy to sing a request, as J.Lo asked for one more run through Rod Stewart’s “Maggie Mae.” In his inimitable style, McDonald worked the stage and gave America one more taste of his raspy voice and unique rag-doll dance moves, slapping hands with the remaining seven as the curtain came down on his “Idol” run. The show also featured a performance from original “Idol” Kelly Clarkson and country singer Jason Aldean, singing their platinum-selling duet, “Don’t You Want to Stay” as well as Rihanna, who sang a dramatic rendition of her ballad “California King Bed.” Don’t miss “Idol Party Live” every Thursday at noon on MTV.com for analysis, celebrity guests and even some karaoke — get in the conversation by tweeting with the hashtag #idolparty! Jeremih Recalls His Dorm-Room Escape, On ‘When I Was 17’

Singer learned a valuable lesson when he ‘borrowed’ a friend’s video game. By Sterling Wong Jeremih on ‘When I Was 17’ Photo: MTV News College, as we all know, is a time of crazy experiences, and R&B singer Jeremih definitely had his share of zany antics. On this week’s “When I Was 17,” Jeremih shares his obsession with “Grand Theft Auto” and the trouble it caused him. “When I was 17, ‘Grand Theft Auto’ was one of the biggest games out, and I didn’t have it,” the singer recalls on the latest episode, premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. However, one of the guys on the floor of his dorm did have the game, but he refused to lend it to Jeremih. Desperate, he hatched a plan. “This one night, I actually went to his room. I knocked and he was asleep. I saw the game and I opened his PlayStation, and bang, I got the game and tried to tiptoe out.” Jeremih then spent the next hour and a half happily playing his beloved game, but the fun was short-lived: The guy’s roommate showed up at his door asking for the game back. “He was like, ‘Man, I know you’re in there! Give me my game!’ ” Jeremih recalls. “I didn’t say anything. I acted like I wasn’t in there.” Perhaps Jeremih thought his troubles would go away in the morning, but he thought wrong. When he woke up and tried to get out of his dorm room, he realized he couldn’t. His door had been glued shut. “I’m like, ‘Yo, what’s going on?’ So this whole time I’m beating on my door for hours, and I literally heard people walking past laughing, like, ‘Why is this dude knocking to get out of his dorm?’ ” Jeremih shares. And this is where the story gets crazier: “I didn’t have another choice, so I looked at the window. I was on the third floor, and luckily there was nothing but bushes, so I put on four coats, and that’s it. If I’m going, I’m going. I jumped out and landed right on the bushes.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Jeremih, Shay Mitchell and Ashley Fink — airs on Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. Dear Bossip: He Hordes His Phone!

Hello Bossip fam, lol. I have a problem with a man that I’m dating and I know I’m probably making it a bigger issue than it is. I was married through out my 20′s and been divorced for four years now. Anywho I’ve been dating this guy for about 6 or 7 months now and he’s 3 years younger than me which isn’t a huge difference but it’s enough to make me wonder. Of course he knows why me and me ex-husband divorced and it was because I found evidence of his cheating in his cell phone and it was all I needed to confirm that I wasn’t crazy and that a divorce was in order. The guy I’m seeing now obviously took that and ran with it and now he hordes his phone and granted I told him that if it’s near me I will snoop through it. I believe I meant it as a joke but the more he hides it, it makes me want to go through it! We’re just dating without a real exclusive commitment so it’ snot like I would be justified in being mad at what I find but it really makes me wonder. He won’t even bring the phone in the same room when he stays over or he’ll leave it in the car when we go out. At first I thought it was endearing but now I’m getting suspicious. Should I find a way to get to it or should I leave well enough alone? Good day, sis, thank you for writing in and sharing your story! So, you’re paranoid by the absence of a cellular device when you’re with the man you’re currently dating? Why? If there is no real exclusivity clause in your relationship thus far, then why are you sweating his phone? If he’s not worried about his phone ringing when he’s with you, why are you concerned? He could very well be making a conscious effort to remain courteous, so don’t make a stink about it! And the fact that you’ve already disclosed to him why your marriage ended and that you will not hesitate to go through one’s phone, can you blame him? He’s still entitled to his privacy, Ma! It’s too early in the game for you to be going through the man’s phone! If he’s given you no reason to be concerned with his movements, then don’t sweat it! If he leaves his phone in the car or in another room, who cares? If his attention is devoted to you when you all are together, soak it up! If the communication between the two of you is on point, who cares about a cell phone? He might just want to get to know you without the drama of the “who, what, where when, why and how” line of questioning. A man who’s up to speed on technology knows, through experience or otherwise, that a cell phone can cause a major headache and disturb an otherwise good flow between two people, so they do their best to avoid it. On the other hand, trust your instincts! A woman’s intuition seldom fails her and if you have a gut feeling he’s playing games, you might be right! So do all you need to do to protect yourself emotionally, mentally and physically. If it takes you falling back and taking some space, do it. If you need to initiate an open and honest conversation between the two of you and gauge your movements based upon the results of said conversation, do it … without apology! Here’s the deal, Ma! We all have baggage but what you can’t do is make the mistake of taking all anger and mistrust from your marriage into a new relationship. It’s just unfair and, in the grand scheme of the things, unattractive. So, you should definitely decide whether it’s his actions that have you suspicious or if it’s your past coming back to haunt you. If you need to take time, take it, sis! But by all means, don’t push a potentially promising man away from your life because you can’t let go of the past! Be smart and make smart moves too, sis! Good luck to you! What are your thoughtsm Bossip Fam? Please share them below! Remember to e-mail all topic suggestions, questions and feedback to loveandrelationships@bossip.com !

Snoop Dogg Salutes The New West For ‘Taking Chances’

‘I keep my ear glued to the street when it comes to these new acts from the West,’ veteran Cali rapper tells MTV News. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Snoop Dogg Photo: MTV News MTV News’ New West Week might be shining a spotlight on L.A. newcomers, but the rapper any rising Cali MC must pay homage to is Snopp Dogg . Since his debut on “Deep Cover” with Dr. Dre, Snoop has achieved multiplatinum success and status as a hip-hop icon, utilizing his talents off the mic as an actor and executive too. The man born Calvin Broadus has always lent a helping hand to MCs making their way in the rap game, especially those hailing from his home coast. “As far as the New West or the young MCs out here on the West Coast, I’m very familiar with them because they call me Uncle Snoop,” Snoop told MTV News. “So more than likely, they come get my blessings on a record, or through mutual friends we connect with each other, because I always keep my ear to the streets and I always love being a part of what’s new and fly representing the West Coast. I’ve always been one to try to put that on the forefront, so I keep my ear glued to the street when it comes to these new acts from the West. I try to be a part of their projects and a part of blowing them up.” Not all the L.A. or Cali rap legends have been as welcoming to new talent as Snoop Dogg. Nevertheless, this new crop of MCs take cues from their rap elders but still manage to carve out unique lanes for themselves. Getting a featured verse from Snoop may give relatively unknown rappers a dose of visibility, but they don’t come cheap, easily running into six figures. The West Coast rap legend is willing to give new jacks with minimal recording budgets a deep discount, if he respects their music and hustle. “When you doing those types of situations, you building relationships and you building trust in a community that doesn’t have no trust right now,” said Snoop, who in some cases has waived his fee for a hot 16 bars entirely. “To me, that means more to me to be able to go back and give these artists a shot and not overcharge them and try to rob the bank and say, ‘Give me what I’m worth.’ Nah, let me give you a shot, because if we playing team ball and I’m from the West, you guys are a part of my team.” Snoop’s dedication to maintaining strong relationships with his peers — veterans and rookies — has paid off, since he has managed to remain relevant in a fickle hip-hop industry throughout a career that spans almost 20 years. While the last major MC to break through from Los Angeles is the Game, Snoop has also appeared on songs from local up-and-comers like Glasses Malone, Nipsey Hussle and YG, to name a few. “The artists are more courageous and more death-defying. They like taking chances,” Snoop said of the recent surge in Cali-repping artists, who MTV will be featuring throughout the next week. “In the past, we would wait for radio and wait for other labels to get behind us and support us. But now you got artists being individually strong on they own and going straight to the Internet, creating songs and dealing with the fans one on one, cutting the middleman out. When you get those views on the Internet, sometimes to me that means way more than a record sale. Because you got people stopping they day to pay attention to you and see you do their thing in a real way.” Stick with us all week as MTV News turns the spotlight on the New West, the next wave of hip-hop acts helping to restore faith in the L.A. rap scene. From groups like Odd Future to rising MCs like Dom Kennedy, we’ll bring you up close and personal to these artists as they carve their own lanes in the post-gansgta rap era. Keep it locked here for the next week for more on the West Coast up-and-comers! Related Videos The New West: An In-Depth Look At L.A. Hip-Hop Related Artists Snoop Dogg

‘Dancing With The Stars’ Isn’t Easier With Youth, Chelsea Kane Says

‘So far, some of our oldest contestants have been at the top of the leader board,’ the Disney star tells MTV News. By Kelley L. Carter Chelsea Kane Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — Age ain’t nothing but a number for Chelsea Kane. The 22-year-old Disney star and current “Dancing With the Stars” contestant is paired up with 24-year-old Mark Ballas, which makes the pair among the youngest on the show this season. But taking a look at how the scoring has been going so far, Kane points out, that means nothing. “Sometimes I feel like it’s a disadvantage, in the sense where I think people automatically assume because we’re younger that we’re going to pick up the choreography easier and that we have this upper hand in the competition,” Kane told MTV News of her age. “Which I don’t think is the case at all. We’re three dances in, and so far some of our oldest contestants have been at the top of the leader board. I don’t think anything can prepare you for this experience.” So that’s the downside to being younger. The upside? Kane laughs that she and Ballas can exist off of little sleep. “The nice part is that I feel like we’re able to go with less sleep, and we like to go out and still have fun and we don’t have families or anything to worry about yet! So that’s the advantage. We get to enjoy this,” she said, laughing. When MTV News caught up with the pair at their rehearsal for Monday night’s (April 11) dance, we asked them to so size up their competition. The front-runner they’re most worried about is Ralph Macchio, who is 49. “I feel like Ralph is really going to be a challenge, just because he works so hard,” Kane said. “Every time we come to the studio, he’s been here all day, takes no breaks, whereas Mark and I are in the kitchen eating Ralph’s anniversary cake that he had dropped off. We’re so bad!” Do you think being young is an advantage on “Dancing With the Stars”? Let us know in the comments!

‘The Dance Scene’ Shows ‘Music Still Matters,’ Laurieann Gibson Says

Lady Gaga’s creative director tells MTV News why she agreed to do her own reality show. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Vanessa WhiteWolf Laurieann Gibson Photo: MTV News Laurieann Gibson debuted her new E! reality show, “The Dance Scene,” on Sunday night, and the premiere was an inside look at what it’s like to be one of the most sought-after choreographers in the game. Gibson — who is also Lady Gaga’s creative director — is seen working with A-listers Katy Perry and Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles as they prepare for VH1’s “Divas Live” in the first episode. Before her E! show, Gibson had made appearances on reality shows like “So You Think You Can Dance,” MTV’s “Making the Band” and “Skating With the Stars.” When MTV News caught up with her, Gibson said she was drawn to the idea of having her own reality show because she wanted fans to see that there’s still real artistry in pop music. “I think it’s the only reason why I did the show, was because after being in the music industry for so long and loving music and wanting real artists and real talent to take the forefront as opposed to a premeditated idea of what an artist is based on — a corporate mind-set or a person — that a piece of music or a piece of dance is birthed out of your belly,” she explained. “I want the music to get back into the hands of the people. I wanted them to know that if they watch the show and they see me doubt or fear or fight through adversity or some dream-slayer and they can watch and be inspired that they can make it,” Gibson added. “The music still matters, that the dance still matters, that the gift still matters.” The show goes deep into Gibson’s life and follows her crew of dancers and choreographers, all of whom work from her Boom Kack studios. The dance maven is known for her tough approach, and she thinks the show, which is executive-produced by Ryan Seacrest, will show another side of Gaga’s trusted right-hand lady. “I think they’re gonna be surprised to know the truth to how I’ve gotten where I’ve gotten and what I’ve been through,” Gibson told us. “Because I seem so tough and I am so tough [but] they’re going to see another side of me. I’m still a little girl.” What do you think of Laurieann’s new E! show? Tell us in the comments! Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Lady Gaga Creative Director Laurieann Gibson

Curren$y Says One Alchemist Song Turned Into Covert Coup Mixtape

‘You work with artists, and then that way, your music will stand,’ Curren$y tells MTV News of picking producers. By Alvin Blanco Curren$y Photo: MTV News New Orleans rapper Curren$y has a fresh deal with Warner Bros. Records, but it’s not stopping him from releasing free music. The former Young Money Records signee made his name in the hip-hop world via prolific mixtape releases that helped land him on the cover of XXL Magazine’s 2009 Freshmen cover. Now, Curren$y will be releasing the Covert Coup mixtape April 20. The album will be available for download at CurrensySpitta.com . Covert Coup is produced by Alchemist (Eminem, Mobb Deep, Nas), and guests include Freddie Gibbs and Prodigy. The mixtape came together after Spitta and Alchemist connected to record only one song. “I was going to do one record and give it away, that night, but we did three,” Curren$y told MTV News. “We did one; I was like, ‘We’ll give this one away.’ Then [Alchemist] was like, ‘Well, we need another one to make up for that one.’ So we did one, and I was like, ‘Yo, let me hear that other beat that you played before you played the one we just did,’ and then that turned into another one. And three is, like, 10. You might as well go ahead and get it done.” Curren$y is comfortable collaborating on projects where one producer oversees the bulk of the beats. He released a pair of albums last year ( Pilot Talk and Pilot Talk 2 ) that were handled almost entirely by Ski Beatz (Jay-Z, Camp Lo). “Producers, that’s an art. So you work with artists, not hustlers,” Curren$y explained. “Not people just milling beats. It’s like beat mills, don’t do that. You work with artists, and then that way, your music will stand. You’re not trying to sell 10 million records right now. Sell that over time. Sell it to where you’re 50 and your records still selling because people who grew up with you are trying to show their kids what’s effed up about the game, and then they go to the record store and buy your record to play that for them.” On the day of Covert Coup ‘s release, Curren$y will kick off a nationwide Jet Life Tour that runs through June. Its first show, in New Orleans, will be streamed live to Los Angeles and New York. The Covert Coup track list, according to Warner Bros.: 1. “BBS” 2. “The Type” (featuring Prodigy) 3. “Blood Sweat and Gears” (featuring Fiend) 4. “Ventilation” 5. “Life Instructions” (featuring Smoke Dza) 6. “Smoke Break” 7. “Double 0 7” 8. “Scottie Pippen” (featuring Freddie Gibbs) 9. “Full Metal” Will you check out Curren$y’s latest tape? ‘Harry Potter’ Star Freddie Stroma Says Daniel Radcliffe Welcomed Him Into ‘Family’

Actor also tells MTV News he was ‘amazed’ seeing Radcliffe on Broadway. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Freddie Stroma Photo: MTV News “Insanely overwhelming. Really, really strange.” That’s how “Harry Potter” star Freddie Stroma described what he was feeling as he walked the red carpet during the New York premiere of “Half-Blood Prince” in the summer of 2009. Almost two years later, not much has changed for the self-deprecating Brit, who stopped to chat with MTV News at the hectic premiere for the “Deathly Hallows, Part 1” DVD and said, above the roar of the fans, “I can’t get used to this. It’s just bizarre.” To be fair, Stroma hasn’t had as much practice as some of his co-stars, as he only joined the franchise (as the young, cocksure wizard Cormac McLaggen) for the sixth film. Yet once he signed on, the cast welcomed him into the fold. “When I first met Dan [Radcliffe], I came in and I was just doing a costume check,” Stroma said. “He introduced himself to me and said, ‘Hi, Freddie, how’s it going?’ And then two weeks later, he came up to me again and remembered my name. He meets hundreds of people every day, so that’s amazing. You feel like you’re coming into a family.” And like any good family, the cast is there to support one another in non-“Potter” matters. While he was in New York, Stroma caught a production of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” the Broadway musical in which Radcliffe currently stars. “Really good!” he said of the show. “Dan can dance, sing and act — who knew? I didn’t know. I was just amazed. And it was funny. It’s a funny show. Choreography is amazing as well.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Project Blue Book Open Up About Their Miami Invasion

DJ Aero and Porter Robinson tell MTV News how Project Blue Book became one of dance music’s hottest tickets. By Adam Stewart Porter Robinson, DJ Aero and Tommy Lee When we talk about Project Blue Book , we’re not talking about the alleged top-secret government program said to be covering up things like Area 51 and little green men in Roswell, New Mexico. We’re talking about the hot music collective that’s been turning heads and making waves since their tour first launched back in February. But for Skrillex, Tommy Lee, DJ Aero, and up-and-coming beat-whiz Porter Robinson, the extraterrestrial connotation is apt too. The show these guys put on is totally out of this world. “It came together because we really needed a tour name to make this all work,” DJ Aero explained to MTV News. “We were going back and forth with [Skrillex] coming up with crazy names, and then he sent us an email with the history behind [the government’s Project Blue Book], and we were like, ‘Yeah, that sounds like us!’ ” “We were going to call it Meowington’s Tour!” Aero joked, referring to their pal deadmau5’s (a.k.a Joel Zimmerman) cat. “But we couldn’t put it together legally. [Joel] just wouldn’t give up the name.” “That would also be kind of tragic in light of recent events,” Porter added, making a jab about the injury deadmau5’s now-famous cat recently sustained. All kidding aside, though, as anyone who’s heard their music or been to their shows can attest, the group’s name fits their game. The Project Blue Book Tour has become nothing short of an invasion. After a successful U.S. trek during the winter months, the guys hit this year’s Miami Music Week with some spanking-new material. “We have five different tracks we’ve been playing out, especially for this Ultra Music Week,” Aero told us last month in Miami. “There’s a track named ‘Static’ and a track named ‘LFO Tool’ that we’ve been playing out every night.” Yes, you read that correctly, Tommy Lee and DJ Aero named a track after the audio plug-in tool developed by music mastermind (and longtime deadmau5 and Tommy Lee producer) Steve Duda. “I’ve been playing out two dubstep songs, one is called ‘The State,’ which is some libertarian bitchiness from me, and the other is called ‘Spit Fire.’ They’re just very high-energy, super aggressive dubstep songs,” Porter explained. “I’m also working this weird 100-beats-per-minute banger, which is very unusual. I don’t know many songs that are 100 beats per minute,” he continued. “It’s like slightly faster drumstep, and like slightly slower Justice music. It’s unique.” The trio of Tommy Lee, Porter and Aero, joined by Skrillex (with his infectious sound and obsessive following), have morphed into the one of the “it” acts to catch in 2011. But to paraphrase the old saying, behind all great men, is a great woman. In this case it’s Sofi Toufa , who tours and performs with the gang and has been making waves with her new Moguai collaboration on “Beat of the Drum.” So what’s it like for a girl in possession of one of the hottest voices in dance music to be on tour with all the boys? “Oh, ya know, it’s a little sweaty and smelly and stuff! No, it’s awesome. It’s fun, they’re awesome dudes!” Sofi gushed to MTV News about her Project Blue Book crew. “All these guys shower, which is awesome, so I’m really really happy about that!” “I’ve gotten told on more than one occasion that I smell good from Sofi,” Aero chimed in. “So I feel pretty good about it!” “I’ve gotten that too!” Porter added with a laugh. “It’s very practical; we hired her to get us cocky before our sets!” Unfortunately for Porter, he’ll have to find another morale booster as he says goodbye to Sofi, Tommy and Aero and hits the road with Skrillex and Zedd for the month long, 25-city OWSLA Tour, kicking off June 17 in Las Vegas.
