Rich Peverley is in stable condition after a frightening incident during last night’s Dallas Stars-Columbus Blue Jackets game. With his team trailing 1-0 early on in the opening period, Peverley collapsed on the Dallas bench and was carted down the tunnel. The game was stopped and, several minutes later, the public address announced told the crowd that Peverley has regained consciousness. “We treated (Peverley) for a cardiac event successfully,” said Dr. Gil Salazar of UT Southwestern Hospitals. “We provide oxygen for him. We started an IV. We did chest compressions on him and defibrillated him, provided some electricity to bring a rhythm back to his heart, and that was successful with one attempt, which is very reassuring.” But the game was eventually postponed and no makeup date has been announced. “Dallas player Rich Peverley is doing well and is in stable condition,” the NHL said in a statement. “As a result of the emotional state of the players on both teams caused by the medical emergency, the game is being postponed. We apologize for any inconvenience and we thank the fans.” Added John Davidson, the Blue Jackets president of hockey operations of the Stars: “They’re shaken and they want to reschedule. We understand that. They were shaken to the core. In 62 games this season before Monday, Peverley had seven goals and 23 assists. His wife accompanied him to the hospital in the ambulance. “He’s going to be OK,” Dallas Coach Lindy Ruff said. “The care he’s getting and the care going forward is the most important thing.”

Derek Jeter will soon have a lot more time on his hands to sleep with really gorgeous women: The iconic Yankees shortstop has announced that 2014 will be his final season. Jeter has a lifetime batting average of .312 and has collected 3,316 career hits. He seemed poised to challenge Pete Rose’s record for most hits in a career until he broke his ankle in the 2012 American League Championship, missing nearly all of last season as a result. The shortstop also has five World Series rings on his resume, along with a record .351 batting average in the Fall Classic. He will be the second first ballot Hall of Famer to leave the game in as many seasons for the Yankees, following Mariano Rivera’s retirement last year. In a 15-paragraph message that started and ended by thanking his fans, Jeter broke this news via Facebook, writing: “The 2014 season will be my last year playing professional baseball.” Casey Close, Jeter’s long-time agent, then confirmed the development to multiple outlets.
