Young Money’s Shanell Says Street Single Is For ‘Boss’ Chicks

‘The way I write my love songs comes out different,’ R&B upstart says of penning Nicki Minaj-assisted ‘Cupid’s Got a Gun.’ By Jayson Rodriguez Shanell Photo: Jason LaVeris/ Getty Images Young Money’s Shanell has a voice as sweet as Red Velvet cake, but the singer/songwriter isn’t your average R&B pop tart. On her new single “Cupid’s Got a Gun” featuring Nicki Minaj, she’s as sharp with her lyrics as her boss Lil Wayne is with his rhymes. Shanell says the song represents the “tough skin” type of girls. “Me and my homegirl Mika Means were actually in the studio and we were coming up with stuff and we started that song, “Cupid’s Got a Gun,” Shanell told MTV News this week. “It’s a love song, but it’s a love song told in a different way. I’m not really a mushy person, so I express my emotions, it’s like, instead of saying I love you, it’s I f—ing love you. So the way I write my love songs comes out different. And it’s this energy that I felt that it needed, ’cause I consider myself a boss type of chick and I got a tough skin. I thought Nicki would be perfect to be on this record to exemplify that boss type of energy. I played it for her and she jumped right on it.” The song is the first effort from her forthcoming debut album. According to Shanell, “Cupid’s Got a Gun” wasn’t slated to be the first single but after it leaked to the Web earlier this month it drew a strong response. As a result, she and her team are prepping to work the song as a street single to tease the upcoming LP. She hopes to drop that full-length for the masses next summer. Meanwhile, she has her hand in other projects like her gig as the face clothing line Married to the Mob’s fall collection. The singer has also written a video treatment for “Cupid’s” that she described as a combination of “Smooth Criminal” and the movies “Sin City” and “Kill Bill.” “As a writer, there’s a picture in my head and I’m basically writing a story to the pictures that flash in my head,” Shanell explained. “So I always had the visual for the video in my head. But once we got Nicki on it, I thought, Oh, [those three as a mix would work]. I’ve written it out and I’m looking for a director now.” Are you looking forward to seeing the collaboration from Young Money’s first ladies? Tell us in the comments! Fabolous’ Grieving Mixtape Features Three New Songs

‘This is just the music to help you get through them tough times,’ Fab says of There Is No Competition 2: The Grieving Music. By Shaheem Reid Fabolous Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive We all know Funeral Fab is “Nyyyyyyyyccce!” But he’s also a nice guy. Earlier this year, Fabolous had homecoming ceremonies for all the contenders out there with the Gangsta Grillz The Funeral Service: There Is No Competition 2. Now that everyone is in the grave “Thriller” style, he’s not just going to leave them buried. He’s going to place tombstones on their lots. We caught up with Loso at Cemetery Monument Co. in the Bronx (that’s right by St. Raymond’s Cemetery, for those of you familiar with the BX) while he was tombstone shopping. Fab clarified what’s up with his new EP (due September 6). “I’m just here to make sure they’re buried respectfully,” Fab said. “That’s why we’re here, picking out tombstones for the competition. I felt it was the least I could do for being somewhat responsible for killing the competition. We’re here today, we’re going to bury them respectfully. We’re getting tombstones, some of them are expensive. Some of y’all don’t deserve expensive tombstones. We may cremate you. We’re going to figure out a way to work the competition in. There’s not even enough graveyard, but we’re going to figure this out. Fab’s EP features three new songs — “Lights Out,” “You Be Killin’ ‘Em” and “Body Count” — and a remix of “Body Bag” with Cam’ron and Vado, which were not on The Funeral Service. Lex Luger and Ryan Leslie are among the producers. “The EP was something Def Jam came to me about doing. The mixtape had a lot of success in the streets and online. They came to me with the opportunity of putting it out to more of the masses. I guess for certain people who didn’t pick it up, now to add something new to it. Add the videos, add a couple new songs and call it There Is No Competition 2: The Grieving Music [mixtape]. This is just the music to help you get through them tough times. Another sad day for the competition.” The track list for There Is No Competition 2: The Grieving Music mixtape, according to Def Jam. 1. “The Eulogy” (Intro) 2. “The Wake” 3. “I’m Raw” 4. “Body Ya” 5. “Body Count” 6. “Body Bag Remix” (featuring Cam’ron and Vado) 7. “You Be Killin’ ‘Em” 8. “Tonight” (featuring Red Cafe) 9. “Lights Out” 10. “Closing Prayer” (Outro) For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . M-1 and Stic.Man of Dead Prez are celebrating the 10-year anniversary of their classic debut, Let’s Get Free, with a new mixtape in conjunction with DJ Drama. The street CD — which came out Tuesday (June 22) — also gives a nod to another classic of theirs, 2004’s Revolutionary but Gangsta. “The Dead Prez tape is called Revolutionary but Gangsta Grillz, ” Drama said Saturday in Atlanta, backstage at Birthday Bash 15. “I jumped on it. I remember when Dead Prez first came out. I did an interview with them, [during the] old ‘Soul in the Hole,’ Loud Records day. It’s a way for me to get in and do projects that people might not expect, but it’s still quality music. I take my brand where I want to. Dead Prez is definitely deserving of a Gangsta Grillz. It’s a good balance. “The guys go in on a lot of records,” Drama added. “The hits as well as some obscure joints. They had to go in on ‘Over.’ Drake borrowed the style; they took it right back. They did their thing. They went in on Gucci’s ‘Wasted.’ You’ll be surprised about that. They went in on a couple of instrumentals. It’s some heat on there, man.” Of course, the Drake track Dram refers to is the song “Far From Ova,” which is already on the Net. Last month, for Mother’s Day, Prez also released “The Beauty Within,” which uses the beat and reworks the hook from B.o.B’s “Nothin’ on You.” Other Heat This Week
