50th Anniversary This Weekend of the Seminal ‘Sharon Statement’

Before this weekend ends, I thought it worth a reminder that this weekend marks the 50th anniversary of a key milestone in the creation of the modern conservative political movement – the “Sharon Statement.” On Friday, the Fund for American Studies and the Young America’s Foundation sponsored a “ Tribute Sharon: Celebrating 50 Years of Advancing Liberty ” daytime conference followed by a dinner commemorating the 1960 founding of the Young Americans for Freedom . C-SPAN carried the afternoon speakers live from DC’s Mayflower hotel. (The image here is from a photo I took of a screen during the dinner.) For the American Spectator online, Quin Hillyer, one of the speakers, wrote an informative piece on what he described as “the single best compendium of American conservative movement beliefs” and its adoption at a gathering of about 90 college students and a few others at William F. Buckley Jr.’s home in Sharon, Connecticut. In a piece in Friday’s Investor’s Business Daily, “ The Magnificent Legacy of the YAF ,” K.E. Grubbs Jr. recalled “M. Stanton Evans was charged with drafting a statement of principles” and observed: “The Sharon Statement would last as the late 20th century’s single most elegant distillation of conservative principles.” A new book, by Wayne Thorburn, provides a history of the Young Americans for Freedom and a look at its impact and the influence of those who were once members, ‘A Generation Awakes: Young Americans for Freedom and the Creation of the Conservative Movement.’ ( Amazon’s page ) Dinner attendees got a free copy and I discovered that I earned a sentence (on page 493, yes, it’s a long book). (C-SPAN’s video camera caught me a few times in the audience and in this jpg you can see me, from the back, talking to a conservative media figure with whom you may be familiar: Scripps-Howard nationally-syndicated columnist Deroy Murdock .) Sharon Statement “Adopted in Conference, at Sharon, Connecticut, in conference September 10 – 13, 1960.” IN THIS TIME of moral and political crises, it is the responsibility of the youth of America to affirm certain eternal truths. WE, as young conservatives believe: THAT foremost among the transcendent values is the individual’s use of his God-given free will, whence derives his right to be free from the restrictions of arbitrary force; THAT liberty is indivisible, and that political freedom cannot long exist without economic freedom; THAT the purpose of government is to protect those freedoms through the preservation of internal order, the provision of national defense, and the administration of justice; THAT when government ventures beyond these rightful functions, it accumulates power, which tends to diminish order and liberty; THAT the Constitution of the United States is the best arrangement yet devised for empowering government to fulfill its proper role, while restraining it from the concentration and abuse of power; THAT the genius of the Constitution – the division of powers – is summed up in the clause that reserves primacy to the several states, or to the people in those spheres not specifically delegated to the Federal government; THAT the market economy, allocating resources by the free play of supply and demand, is the single economic system compatible with the requirements of personal freedom and constitutional government, and that it is at the same time the most productive supplier of human needs; THAT when government interferes with the work of the market economy, it tends to reduce the moral and physical strength of the nation, that when it takes from one to bestow on another, it diminishes the incentive of the first, the integrity of the second, and the moral autonomy of both; THAT we will be free only so long as the national sovereignty of the United States is secure; that history shows periods of freedom are rare, and can exist only when free citizens concertedly defend their rights against all enemies… THAT the forces of international Communism are, at present, the greatest single threat to these liberties; THAT the United States should stress victory over, rather than coexistence with this menace; and THAT American foreign policy must be judged by this criterion: does it serve the just interests of the United States?

Joaquin Phoenix Still Here, Attached to Non-Financed Foot Fetishist Project

With the unsettling I’m Still Here hitting theaters today, it’s time to remember that Joaquin Phoenix is actually an actor. Or something. Perfectly pegged to his return to the spotlight — funny how these things work, right? — THR has published a rundown of all the near misses Phoenix has had over the course of the last year. Apparently his retirement from acting was also fake. Try to feign your surprise.

Meet the Press: Dick Armey Slams Alan Greenspan’s View of Bush Tax Cuts

David Gregory on Sunday finally got an answer to his question about extending the Bush tax cuts, but it certainly wasn’t what he was expecting. For those that have been watching “Meet the Press” this month, the host has been grilling his conservative guests about this issue ever since former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan told him on August 1 that tax cuts don’t pay for themselves. Having badgered Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) about this earlier in the program with no success, Gregory broached the subject with former House Majority Leader Dick Armey in a subsequent segment. With a hanging curveball coming into his wheelhouse, Armey whacked a long drive that still hasn’t landed (video follows with transcript and commentary): DAVID GREGORY, HOST: I want to, I want to address the tax debate . And what you hear from Republican leaders is an unwillingness to pay the bill as you move forward to extend the Bush tax cuts . FORMER REPRESENTATIVE DICK ARMEY (R): Not at all. MR. GREGORY: Is that wrong? You heard Alan Greenspan say that it’s borrowed money … REP. ARMEY: No. Right. MR. GREGORY: …and that they do not pay for themselves. REP. ARMEY: Where has Alan Greenspan been? John — I, I was a young undergraduate watching all my faculty celebrate the genius of John F. Kennedy as he taught us you cut taxes , revenues increase. Reagan cut taxes , revenue doubled. What — the first, most important, critical thing for the American economy is to cut the size of the federal government. This is a big, fat, sloppy, inefficient, obstructionist, Porky Pig that’s standing in the way of economic progress for the American people. It is counterproductive. It’s an extra weight. It is — and it needs to be cut or this economy can’t carry the weight. This is no thinking… D’oh! Now, that’s the way to hit a hanging curveball! With the crowd still on its feet, Gregory turned to his liberal guest for her view:  MR. GREGORY: This is the argument. GOV. JENNIFER GRANHOLM (D-MICHIGAN): Just quickly — this is the argument, and it’s a 20th century argument, it’s not a 21st century argument. When we’re competing in a global economy , the government has to partner with the private sector to create jobs. If you just slash spending, you slash the investments in the things that are going to move our economy forward, we miss out. Just very quickly, last year, the vice president came to Michigan , said we were going to get all these battery grants; we created — we have 16 companies now in Michigan just in the past year because we partnered with the private sector creating 62,000 jobs. Strategic investment with the private sector is what works in the 20th century. Actually, Granholm was playing rather fast and loose with the facts. As MLive.com reported on July 27 in an article titled “Experts Warn ‘Battery Bubble’ Could Burst Michigan’s Dreams”: Michigan and the federal government have placed a multibillion dollar bet that advanced batteries and electric vehicles will someday power the state and national economies. But experts at a National Academy of Sciences conference on the future of batteries, held here Monday, said the bet could go bust if consumers don’t buy those vehicles. And no one knows if they will. The Obama administration last year allocated $2.3 billion in stimulus funds to help develop the nascent advanced battery industry. More than half of that money — $1.35 billion — was awarded to Michigan companies and organizations. Much of the money is being spent on research and development, and on the manufacturing of advanced batteries. Michigan has supplemented that with lucrative tax credits for companies manufacturing cells and battery packs in the state. And those 62,000 jobs Granholm said were already created? Gov. Jennifer Granholm said the state expects to create 62,000 new battery jobs in Michigan over the next 10 years. Ah. So, with unemployment currently at 13.1 percent in her state, these are jobs Granholm hopes will be created in the next ten years. But that’s not what she told Gregory on Sunday. Sadly, he let her get away with it, although he did ask a good follow-up question:  MR. GREGORY: But should the Democrats be raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans during a recession? Understanding her previous faux pas concerning jobs “created,” listen to her answer:  GOV. GRANHOLM: It’s — the question is, should the tax cuts expire for the wealthiest 2 percent so that we can make the investments that will grow jobs? Yes. That’s the most effective way of creating job growth. The CBO has said that cutting taxes for the wealthiest 2 percent is the most ineffective way of creating job growth. Yep. The most effective way of creating jobs is to tax employers so the government can get the money rather than employees. Of course, what folks like Granholm and the current White House resident do is then claim they “saved” or “created” jobs regardless of any real impact to payrolls or unemployment. Pretty neat, huh?  Fortunately, Armey was having none of this:  REP. ARMEY: I’ll give you, I’ll give you anywhere from — a minimum of $2 trillion to a possible $8 trillion worth of real stimulus of the economy from the private sector if we can just relieve the private sector that’s sitting on its cash from the fear that this administration ‘s going to screw up the future of this economy. Let them understand this administration ‘s going to stand down from any new cockamamy ideas and not raise taxes and take away the return on an investment, and they’ll put that cash to work in America. MR. GREGORY: I’m going to make that the last word.  So am I.

Some HBO Nudity to Start the Day of the Day

I know everyone watches these bullshit shows like Hung, Entourage and True Blood. It’s like this shit is the new Seinfeld, Cheers, or Golden Girls. It is like the cool thing to do for mainstream pieces of shit who like to sit around and feel like everyone else or at least like they can fit in with everyone else especially for useless conversations that go down around the coffee machine….It’s like if you don’t watch this shit, you aren’t an active member of society and I guess that makes me subhuman, cuz I can’t be bothered with this crap, although the creator and writer of Entourage is my facebook friend, but we didn’t need popular TV trends to tell us that…. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining that HBO proves that people are smuttier and more perverted than the Christian run networks want to believe….I like to think it is kinda opening the door for me to one day have my own TV show about poverty, hookers, teenage runaways, stepdaughter lust, a fat wife, alcoholism, celebrity harrasment and good times…unless I die of a failed liver first…or just forget my genius idea due to laziness.. So here’s Merrin Dungey’s Right Tit on Hung Sasha Grey is a worthless cunt who I think is totally overrated and boring, despite how graphic her porn gets, she is full of shit with her “Sexual Performing Artist” goth bullshit and she was Naked on Entourage…but if you want you can just google her and see her taking black cock in her ass, meaning her naked ain’t a fuckin’ thing…Cunt. Dania Ramirez and Sasha Grey on Entourage Anna Paquin Ass and Tit on True Blood Anna Paquin and her worthless bisexual body in a bikini on True Blood

Flo Rida Records Unofficial Miami Heat Anthem

Inspired by LeBron James’ arrival, the Florida MC says he hopes ‘We Already Won’ will ‘get the city hype.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Flo Rida in the studio recording “We Already Won” Photo: Peter Bailey/Andy Boy Genius/Niteside/NBC Miami Heat fans have been celebrating ever since NBA phenom LeBron James announced his move to the Florida team last week. (After ‘Bron made his announcement, Miami’s DJ Irie described the mania in the city in an email to MTV News: “Miami is literally in a frenzy right now! Leftover fireworks from the Fourth of July are going off left and right.”) Now, one of the state’s hitmaking stars has hit the studio to record a track to help Heat fans get their party on. Flo Rida jumped in the lab to make “We Already Won,” a banger that he dubs an unofficial anthem for the Miami Heat. Flo broke down the creation of the song to NBC Miami’s Niteside blog . “Being a part of the Poe Boy family, we always trying to do something to get the city hype,” Flo said. “So I called my colleagues Billy Blue, Brianna, Desloc [Piccalo], Ball Greezy, Brisco. We just trying to build up the morale of Dade County. Having LeBron come in, having [Chris] Bosh come in, we think that’s a great thing. So we just got in the studio and did what we always do — go in there and make a great record.” The Florida rapper, who’s broken chart records with party-starting hits like “Right Round,” also chopped it up for the blog about his next album, which he’s expecting to drop in the fall. Flo talked to MTV News last month about crafting the David Guetta-produced jam “Club Can’t Handle Me,” which will be featured on the LP, as well as the “Step Up 3-D” soundtrack. “It’s called The Only One,” Flo told NBC Miami, adding that the buzz surrounding the Heat’s new lineup is inspiring his latest effort. “It definitely feels special for the fact that we got LeBron and this crazy team, you know, [Dwyane] Wade and everybody.” Who else would you like to hear take a stab at a Miami Heat anthem? Nas, Damian Marley Bring Political Distant Relatives Tour To NYC

Duo joined by Evil Genius Green Lantern for socially conscious show. By Shaheem Reid Lyrically, Nas has been at a higher altitude than his peers since the beginning of his career. His verbal achievements have become legendary. While admittedly, Nas sometimes has questionable beat selections, the Queensbridge native’s words have been so piercing that the guy can frankly get away with rapping over anything. And he has. Last year when Esco announced that he would be following up his album Untitled with a duet LP with a star outside of genre, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley , some of his fans didn’t know what to think. But if there is anyone who could actually pull it off, it’s Nas. Certainly there would be way more public pushback if, say, a Jay-Z, Eminem, T.I. or Young Jeezy would have set out on such an audacious musical venture. But with Nas, you know his spirit is free, and even in his mid-30s, the timeless mic king is almost as rebellious as when he was a 20-year-old kid fresh out of the Queensbridge projects. Last night, Nas and Jr. Gong touched down at New York’s Highline Ballroom for the second show of their Distant Relatives tour (the trek started this weekend in Chicago). The messages in the music steer clear of materialistic jargon and partying — the duo pushed thought provocation on worldwide subjects. Nas brought one of the great DJs in hip-hop, the Evil Genius Green Lantern. Marley came with his band, including backup singers, as well as a flag bearer who proudly and tirelessly waved the colors of Jamaica throughout the show. “What happened to us?” Nas rapped with force on “Tribes at War,” performed at the top of their set. “Geographically they moved us, from Africa/ We was once happiness pursuers/ Now we backstabbin’/ Combative and abusive/ African and Arab go at it, they most Muslim/ We should be movin’ in unison.” “Ancient People” came next, with Nas checking his BlackBerry while on the mic. Either he had an urgent text message or he couldn’t remember his lines, but nevertheless, Esco kept going. “Nah Mean” followed, with the Distant Relatives duo asking President Obama what he could do for them. From there, it was vintage Nas. The supreme MC went into some vintage material, including “Nas Is Like,” “Represent” and “Hip-Hop Is Dead.” “I hate the radio!” Nas yelled on the latter. “F— the radio.” Nas shouted out the Jamaican forefather of hip-hop, Kool Herc, and at the end of “If I Ruled the World” gave love to Guru. “My man Guru, he walks,” Nas said as his background singers sang, “we’ll walk right up to the sun. Hand in hand.” “This one’s about leaders,” Marley sang, from one of the album’s highlights, “Leaders.” “Let’s all change the world.” “The odds stacked against him/ He fights back Mac and Benzes/ Never puts cash or ass before a friendship/ He laughs last/ As some die young, he is still existing/ Somehow he got around the pitfalls of the system/ When he walks, we watch/ When we talks, we listen/ Leaders.”

Lindsay Lohan vs. Glee

It turns out that Lindsay Lohan did see last week’s Madonna-themed episode of Glee , in which McKinley High’s guidance counselor (Jayma Mays) lamented that today’s teenage girls only have role models like Lindsay Lohan, who “looks like something out of Lord of the Rings ,” to emulate. Lohan responded on Sunday night via Twitter: “#gleecast i hope that the show was referring to me looking like a fairy! with the- and the ‘guidance couselor’ [sic] she’s not a natural redhead.” Your move, Ryan Murphy. Hello There, Boy Genius

We’d like to take a moment to welcome Movieline’s newest sibling in the growing MMC brood: Boy Genius Report . This morning MMC’ s fearless leader, Jay Penske (also known as a boy genius to many), announced this terrific partnership between Movieline’s parent company and Jonathan Geller’s BGR. com. For those who don’t know BGR. com, it was launched by Geller in October 2006 and has quickly become one of the top three sites in the mobile category. And it all started, as so many tales of young men who go on to rule the world do, in his parents’ basement. Lesson here: Think twice before mocking that cellar-dweller brother of yours. He very well may be the only one with the money to bail you out later on.
