George Clooney’s Road To The 2012 Oscars

‘The Descendants’ and ‘The Ides of March’ earn the Academy Award-winner his sixth and seventh nominations. By Kevin P. Sullivan George Clooney in “The Descendants” Photo: Fox Searchlight At this point in his career, almost 30 years after he started acting, George Clooney has become not only one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood, but a regular competitor at each year’s Oscars . This year’s Academy Awards nominations, his sixth and seventh, for “The Descendants” and “The Ides of March” represent the diverse work Clooney is now known for and the many different roles he takes on. Clooney’s journey to Sunday night’s 2012 Oscars took a familiar path through the festival circuit with releases in the second half of the year, one carefully engineered to spell awards success, but the two films that got him there and the work he did cover a wide spectrum in filmmaking. “Ides of March” took shape late in 2010, when Clooney signed on to wear three hats for the film: actor, producer and director. His fourth directorial effort to date, the political drama follows a young junior campaign manager (Ryan Gosling) as he struggles with the moral dilemmas of supporting a presidential candidate, played by Clooney. Based on Beau Willimon’s play “Farragut North,” the script for “Ides of March” earned Best Adapted Screenplay nominations for the original author, Clooney and his frequent collaborator Grant Heslov. Though Clooney’s well-known political affiliations and beliefs stood in the foreground, the man himself took more of a backseat, limiting his onscreen role to a few keys scenes. During awards season, the film made a small mark, after debuting to only mildly positive reviews. It did, however, take a spot on the National Board of Review’s top 10 of the year and earned four Golden Globes nominations, including Best Picture (Drama) and Best Director. In “The Descendants,” Clooney took a familiar spot as leading man, but the role of Matt King required him to be anything but his usual model of suave confidence. As a soon-to-be widow, Clooney fully adopted the dopey mantel of an Alexander Payne hero in the tradition of Paul Giamatti in “Sideways” and Matthew Broderick in “Election.” But unlike his predecessors as a lead in one of Payne’s films, Clooney’s character remained almost entirely sympathetic throughout the film, thanks in large part to the believability of the acting. He effortlessly took on the role of an utterly clueless father with good intentions, helping make “Descendants” such a true and touching film. In the week leading up to Oscar night, Clooney stands neck and neck with fellow nominee Jean Dujardin as the favorite. It would be Clooney’s second win for acting, his first coming in 2006 as supporting actor in Stephen Gaghan’s “Syriana.” However Sunday’s ceremony might shake out for Clooney, he has proven himself a mainstay for the Academy Awards, and — whether he’s acting, directing, writing or producing — someone who will continue to appear on shortlists for years to come. How Did Aretha Franklin React to Whitney Houston’s Death?

In the wake of Whitney Houston’s death, the public has heard numerous responses from those that knew the legend well ( Ray J ) to know those speculating wildly in order to increase ratings ( Nancy Grace ). But few were closer to Houston than Aretha Franklin, the artist’s godmother. She spoke to The Today Show this morning about actually hearing the tragic news. “I had just finished watching George Clooney in The Descendants and I flipped back to the regular TV and maybe two minutes after I did that, it came across the screen. I just jumped off the side of the bed [and said] ‘What?’ This could not be. What is this? I just said, ‘Oh my, God.'” Franklin said she had seen previews for Sparkle, a film Houston had recently completed shooting, and was confident the movie would lead to a comeback. “She looked fresh, she looked healthy and she looked gorgeous,” the iconic singer said. “I thought, ‘Yes, she has conquered her challenges and she’s on the way.'” Aretha will sing at Houston’s funeral tomorrow and hopes the public doesn’t focus on “the challenges” her goddaughter faced, but, instead, on all the positive aspects of her life. She even penned the following lyrics to memorialize Houston: Twinkle twinkle superstar/We don’t wonder where you are/Up above the world so bright/Like a diamond in the night/Twinkle twinkle she stood alone/I can’t believe that she’s gone.

SAG Awards Red Carpet Ruled By Pastels, Sexy Details

Emma Stone, Lea Michele and Angelina Jolie flaunt what they’ve got in couture on Sunday night. By Jocelyn Vena Angelina Jolie at the 2012 SAG Awards Photo: Getty Images The SAG Awards may honor actors and their hard work, but on the red carpet on Sunday (January 29), it was all about recognizing all of the hard work they put into their looks. At the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, the overarching trend seemed to be flaunting what you’ve got. For photos of the stars on the SAG Awards red carpet, click here. Zoe Saldana went light in a sequined white dress with a drop waist and floral detailing. Kristin Wiig’s look, though, had a bit of a split personality: Her pale-hued Balenciaga gown was decidedly glam thanks to tailoring that showed off her long, lean body, but her black metal choker was a bit too heavy and goth for the overall look. Two of the biggest divas on Fox’s “Glee,” Lea Michele and Naya Rivera, made pale colors look red-hot. Michele’s lavender Versace had a body-hugging bodice and thigh-high slit, while Rivera’s ice-blue dress was made even sexier thanks to a plunging neckline. Red also ruled the carpet. “My Week With Marilyn” star Michelle Williams was chic in a bright-red Valentino dress, which was cut right above the ankle. Her ladylike look was capped off with lace detailing along her sleeves and neckline. “Dexter” star Jennifer Carpenter also opted for a red-and-lace red-carpet look. Using a similar color palette, Sofia Vergara’s hot pink, strapless Marchesa gown was super hot. Her “Modern Family” co-star Julie Bowen went Grecian in a purple gown. Emma Stone, Angelina Jolie, Tina Fey and Ashlee Simpson decided that a little black dress wasn’t too simple for Sunday’s show. Jolie played up her inner vixen in a Jenny Packham halter gown with a draped neckline. Meanwhile, Stone went quirky in a three-quarter-length strapless black dress with lace details. “The Help” star played up the fun aspect of the Alexander McQueen design with platform shoes. Simpson, meanwhile, looked like a character right out of boyfriend Vincent Piazza’s show “Boardwalk Empire” in a ’20s-style Jenny Packham gown with sequins and see-through fabric along the neckline. Fey brought the “va va voom” in her black strapless column dress: It was all party on top — with grey and black shades — and business at the bottom in a plain black fabric. The guys didn’t disappoint, either. Fellas like Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Jonah Hill kept it classic and simple in tuxedos, choosing ties over bowties. One guy, however, had a little fun with it, and that honor went to “Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who wore a blue pinstripe suit with a matching blue-velvet bowtie. James Farentino, a veteran TV actor whose career was marred by personal problems later in life, has passed away, according to the L.A. Times . He was 73. Brad Pitt On Oscar Nods: ‘Pancakes For Everyone’

Actor tells Today Show he’s ‘ecstatic’ about ‘Moneyball’ and ‘Tree of Life’ nominations. By Jocelyn Vena Brad Pitt in “Moneyball” Photo: Sony Pictures On Tuesday morning (January 24), “Moneyball” star Brad Pitt heard his name called several times when the Oscar nominations were announced . Shortly after, the actor called in to “The Today Show” to open up about being recognized not only for his acting skills, but also his work getting the baseball film off the ground as a producer. “We’re ecstatic over here. It means so much considering this film was just dead on the rocks two years ago,” he said from L.A. “It took a lot of people to get it to the screen. It’s a great honor. I’m really happy.” Pitt got a couple nods thanks to his producer credit on the best picture nominee and his work in the leading role. His co-star Jonah Hill also got some love with a supporting actor nomination. “I’m so happy for Jonah Hill,” he gushed. “I can’t tell you.” Another film he recently starred in, “Tree of Life,” also got some Academy love, making Pitt’s morning an especially good one. “I’m doubly happy that ‘Tree of Life’ made it in there,” he said. “We thought we were all but forgotten; just excited for [director and nominee] Terry Malick.” Pitt will once again face off against his pal and Golden Globe winner George Clooney for Actor in a Leading Role for his work in “The Descendants,” but he’s not too worried about it. “I’m sure we’ll be exchanging many good words later,” he said. “It’s more fun to have a friend there and no one does it better than George. I say give him all the trophies, and when you run out of trophies, make some new ones and give him those too. ” When asked what prize he wants to win most come Oscars night, he played it cool saying, “I could not pick. I’m just so happy that both these films have been recognized. ‘Tree of Life’ was just as difficult to get made and it’s gonna be pancakes for everyone this morning.” Did “Moneyball” deserve all the Academy love? Oscar 2012 Predictions: Best Actor

‘Descendants’ star George Clooney and ‘Artist’ actor Jean Dujardin are two of MTV News’ nominee picks. By Josh Wigler George Clooney in “The Descendants” Photo: 20th Century Fox In less than 24 hours, five actors will find themselves officially locked in on the road toward Oscar glory. The 2012 Academy Award nominations are set to be unleashed on Tuesday, and while there are certainly some expected front-runners who will be in the mix, there are always surprise nominees who make the cut. In the Best Actor category, however, things seem a bit more predictable this year. A handful of performers have found their names repeatedly honored with nominations throughout the current awards season and the trend isn’t likely to stop before Oscar night . From bureaus to baseball, from silence to sex, here are our predictions for the Academy Awards’ Best Actor nominees. George Clooney, “The Descendants” Already familiar with the taste of Oscar gold, Clooney is very likely on the cusp of another major win for his touching turn as “back-up parent” Matt King in Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants.” Clooney has been on an Academy-attracting hot streak in recent years, what with nominations for “Michael Clayton” and “Up in the Air.” Under the right circumstances, he could have easily claimed victories for either of those roles. Will he find himself in the right crowd this time around? Leonardo DiCaprio, “J. Edgar” Critics were not kind to director Clint Eastwood’s biopic about the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s polarizing founder. But DiCaprio’s performance as the titular J. Edgar Hoover is another story. The three-time Oscar nominee turned in a transformative performance as Hoover, both physically and spiritually, and is likely to be recognized with a fourth nomination, if not a win. Jean Dujardin, “The Artist” It’s said that silence is acceptance. If that’s the case, French actor Jean Dujardin could well be accepting a Best Actor award on Oscar night. As the star of director Michel Hazanavicius’ silent film “The Artist,” Dujardin proved the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words — in his case, moving pictures — as he stole the hearts of art-house moviegoers everywhere as George Valentin, a silent-movie actor facing the very real threat of falling from stardom to redundancy. Michael Fassbender, “Shame” Talk about baring it all! Fassbender truly shed every layer possible — and we do mean every layer — as sex addict Brandon Sullivan in director Steve McQueen’s “Shame.” It’s not easy for the star of an NC-17 film to cross over to the awards-season elite, but Fassbender has done exactly that, most notably with his Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor. While he’s not likely to win — a true shame, if you ask us — his inclusion on Oscar night feels like the climax, if you will, of the Irish-German actor’s truly inspired 2011. Brad Pitt, “Moneyball” After the shutdown of Steven Soderbegh’s take on the material, a rewrite from Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin and the surprise hiring of Jonah Hill in his first dramatic role, “Moneyball” surprised everybody by simply existing. Unsurprising is the fantastic performance from Pitt, one of our most gifted (and gorgeous) actors. Pitt has yet to bring an Oscar home, despite numerous nominations over the years. His Billy Beane might be the most understated of all the characters likely to enter the Best Actor field this year, but true to the Oakland A’s general manager’s philosophy, it’s not always a grand slam that gets you the win.
