248 Movies Eligible for Best Film Oscar, Some Will Have Nudity

We won’t have the list of the ten actual nominees for a while yet, but on Monday the Academy announced that a total of 248 films are eligible to win the 2010 Best Picture Oscar. That’s down from 274 last year and 281 in 2008. Last year, the first year to feature ten Best Picture nominees, only two of the films nominated ( A Serious Man and Up in the Air ) had nudity. And of the five nominees in 2008, two also had nudity— The Reader and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button . This year, there are two odds-on favorites for the nominations that contain nudity worth talking about. The first is the George Clooney spy thriller The American . Just one minute into the movie, we get a look at Irina Bj

George Clooney Set for Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity

Well, then! Warner Bros. announced today that George Clooney will replace Robert Downey Jr. in Alfonso Cuaron’s highly anticipated — and perhaps actually happening — Gravity . Clooney will co-star alongside Sandra Bullock in the space drama, though his part is of the supporting variety. What does this mean for that report about Clooney’s involvement in The Man from U.N.C.L.E. with Steven Soderbergh? Perhaps another addition to the Ridiculous Casting/Development Rumors list is needed. [ Deadline ]

George Clooney, Alicia Keys Declare ‘We Want Peace’ For Sudan

Sudanese rapper Emmanuel Jal gathered children and famous friends for video to raise awareness of genocide. By Gil Kaufman Alicia Keys in the video preview for “We Want Peace” Photo: Gatwitch Ltd George Clooney has been using his celebrity to bring attention to the ongoing genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan for years. Along with his dad, newsman Nick Clooney, he filmed the 2008 TV special “A Journey to Darfur” and now Clooney has teamed with an international coalition of stars to star in a music video for the “We Want Peace” global initiative. The effort, led by Sudanese hip-hop artist, activist and former child soldier Emmanuel Jal, benefits the Global Initiative for Sudan and also features cameos from Alicia Keys, Peter Gabriel, billionaire philanthropist Richard Branson, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and former U.N. Secretary General and Nobel laureate Kofi Annan. “The issue has been there for a while, but we’re trying to gather support to raise awareness,” said Jal about the fears of another genocide and civil war in the country. A teaser for the video features Keys calling out to the “whole wide world” to scream out for peace. The clip features children holding up signs making the plea “We Want Peace,” and Jal said it was actually students who were instrumental in helping to alert the world to the genocide in his country. “If the students [in the anti-genocide coalition] STAND and George Clooney never went down there to bring it up to the public, it would have been worse,” he said of the effort launched in 2005 by students at Georgetown University to shed light on the problem of genocide in Darfur. “They made a lot of noise and put pressure on [then] President George Bush, and he announced that there was a genocide [in Darfur].” Jal said the key is making the public aware of the dire situation in his country, because, he believes, “If people know, they will do something.” With a booming drum track behind him, Jal raps, “We can send mankind to the moon/ And we can reach to the bottom of the sea/ That’s why it really kind of baffles me that we cannot end wars and bring peace,” calling on the world to scream and shout for peace. Jal, 30, has seen the devastation of the Darfur conflict first hand. He was born into the life of a child soldier, taking up arms at age 7, and then lost his mother during Sudan’s first civil war. But he rose up from those dire circumstances and became a spokesperson for Refugees United, Amnesty International and Oxfam and has performed at Live 8 and Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday concert, while his music has been featured on three “ER” episodes, the National Geographic documentary “God Grew Tired of Us” and the film “Blood Diamond.” Jal said the song was not exactly inspired by his country’s strife, but that it sprang from him in reaction to the situation. “There’s nothing to be inspired about,” he said. “It’s in my heart; my people are dying every day. Sometimes I feel like I want to move fast, but it’s slow, like I’m stuck in traffic. Having this moment and the frustration I have is what actually brings it out. You don’t need inspiration to come up with a song like that, it’s in you; it’s a desire.” If you are interested in helping, call the 1-800-GENOCIDE hotline to get involved and donate. A four-song EP featuring the tune, as well as vocal and instrumental tracks available for remixing, is available on iTunes now. Clooney and Jal are urging action now because of fears of the outcome of an upcoming referendum slated for January 9, 2011, in which the people of Southern Sudan and the region of Abyei will participate in a vote that Jal said could determine the country’s fate. It is believed that the North will once again launch a civil war if it loses control over the oil-rich southern region of the country. The last civil war, in 1983, lasted 20 years and claimed more than two million lives. “I’ve never had peace; I was born in war,” Jal said. “I’m still at war because people who died years ago are coming back into my life every morning. Whenever I try to run away, the voices are still echoing. I’m only at peace when I am speaking.” For more information on the issue, visit the site for Jal’s charity, Gua-Africa.org . Chris Pine Surprised By George Clooney Movie Reports

Landing the role in ‘Farragut North’ adaptation would be Pine’s ‘dream come true.’ By Kara Warner Chris Pine Photo: Sergio Dionisio/Getty Images With all the high-speed Internet connections and mobile devices out there, we receive breaking news at blistering speeds these days. And in movie news, one rumor can spark a million stories. Case in point: when New York magazine Vulture blog reported that George Clooney was planning to follow through with his plans to adapt the play “Farragut North” into a feature film, with Chris Pine attached to star. But we here at MTV News like to take every possible opportunity to clarify or confirm rumors. And when the very pleasant Pine called to chat about his upcoming thriller “Unstoppable” a few days after the Clooney news surfaced, we had to ask his thoughts about it. “I have, I mean, I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said with some hesitation. So, we told him the short version of the story. “Wow!” he responded, sounding genuinely shocked. “Um, that would be that would be another dream come true,” he said, having mentioned earlier that working with Denzel Washington and Ridley Scott on “Unstoppable” was just that. “Farragut North,” written by former Democratic political operative Beau Willimon, revolves around the shady tactics a young presidential campaign wunderkind named Stephen Myers uses to get his candidate the nomination against a rival senator. “I love that part, I love the story,” said Pine, who received rave reviews in the lead role of “Farragut” on stage last year. “I think it’s a wonderful, wonderful story about a really intelligent young guy who’s kind of hyper articulate, and spinning a bunch of plates at once that’s obviously hiding a lot of trauma and a lot of insecurity and a lot of hurt. And to work with George Clooney, that would be pretty f—ing awesome.” We then mentioned the report that Clooney is eyeing Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamatti as Pine’s potential co-stars. His reaction? He laughed out loud in disbelief. “Jesus Christ! Well, you can’t get better than that,” he said. “I hope it works out. That would be a lot of fun.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ Lives At Box Office

The latest film in the sci-fi franchise takes top spot at theaters Friday. By Mawuse Ziegbe “Resident Evil: Afterlife” Photo: Sony Pictures The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Resident Evil: Afterlife” ($10.9 million) #2 “The American” and “Takers” ($1.8 million) #4 “Machete” and “Going the Distance” ($1.3 million) The “Resident Evil” series proves it’s still filled with life at the box office. The latest installment in the undead-packed sci-fi franchise, “Resident Evil: Afterlife” pulled in $10.9 million during its first day on screens, according to reports . Moviegoers checking out the return of zombie-fighter Alice (Milla Jovovich), who scours a bleak planet for survivors in the wake of a vicious virus that ravaged the globe five years before, placed the film at the top of the box office. Since its 2002 debut, the series has been reinvigorated with 3-D effects and, as Jovovich told recently MTV News , “In this movie, I have a lot more guns, that was fun too.” George Clooney’s turn in “The American” as a hitman on the run after an assignment goes south, continued to draw action fans during its second week in the theaters. Although the flick opened at #1 last week, the film was far behind Friday’s box-office victor “Resident Evil,” scoring $1.8 million in ticket sales. “Takers” continued to maintain a strong presence in theaters, tying with “The American” for second place with an estimated $1.8 million in ticket scans. Moviegoers are still heading to multiplexes to catch the slick heist flick crammed with stunts that star and producer T.I. has called “outstanding.” “I think all of this is just a result of the hard work that was put into the project. Everybody gave 150 percent. Nobody laid back, nobody took off — everybody went hard. This is the result of that,” the rapper and actor told MTV News in August. The Robert Rodriguez-directed “Machete” upholds the action-heavy trend among Friday’s box-office winners. Touting a diverse ensemble that includes Jessica Alba, Don Johnson and Lindsay Lohan, the flick scored $1.3 million. The sunny rom-com “Going the Distance” kicked off its second week in theaters in a tie for fourth place, boasting the same estimated haul as “Machete.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Resident Evil: Afterlife” and “The American” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com. 5 Movies to Watch if The American Left You Wanting More

After a summer of bloated action-comedies and comic-book adaptations, it’s easy to forget that action movies used to be interesting. In the late ’60s and early ’70s mavericks like John Boorman and Jean Pierre-Melville made films that emphasized suspense and tension over set pieces. The protagonists were more emotionally complex, even though they barely spoke. And every punch, gunshot or car crash hurt .

After landing in third place on the Friday kickoff of Labor Day weekend, last week’s #1 movie, “Takers” also toppled Robert Rodriguez’s graphic Mexploitation pic. Featuring hip-hop and Hollywood names like Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen and T.I., the action flick about a smash-and-grab job by suave crew of thieves, snatched up $11.4 million in ticket sales for second place. After barely edging past “The American” on Friday, “Machete” will wrap up its debut weekend right behind “Takers” with a third-place finish. Featuring Jessica Alba and Danny Trejo, and boasting a much-hyped appearance from Lindsay Lohan , the film pulled in $11.3 million. “The Last Exorcism” held steady in the top five with $7.5 million. The fourth-place picture, which follows a film crew charged with documenting the creepy developments at a rural exorcism, has made a total of $32.3 million since hitting theaters last week. Weekend Receipts: The American Is Number One, Machete Deported To Third Place

George Clooney was the king of the (very weak) box office this weekend, as his bare-bones thriller The American took the top spot. In a tightly-fought battle for second place, it was the surprisingly still-strong Takers who edged out Machete — though the difference between them is so small, they may swap places come Tuesday morning. And meanwhile Going the Distance ended up not going anywhere at all. Your weekend receipts are here.

Kanye West Premieres ‘Devil In A New Dress’

The MC’s ‘G.O.O.D. Friday’ initiative rolls on with his second song. By Mawuse Ziegbe Kanye West Photo: Dominique Charriau/WireImage Kanye West has had a busy morning. Just before doling out a series of “Twitter missives apologizing to Taylor Swift for his VMA rant, the Chicago MC dropped a new song, “Devil in a New Dress,” on his KanyeUniversecity blog on Saturday (September 4). The track is the second song in his “G.O.O.D. Friday” series , in which the superstar promised to release a spankin’ new song to kick off the weekend every Friday until Christmas. “Dress” continues ‘Ye’s return to the soulful old-school sounds he championed in his early work and has revisited in the string-laden Beyonc

‘Machete’ Slices Competition At Friday Box Office

‘The American’ is hot on the heels of the action flick. By Mawuse Ziegbe Jessica Alba in “Machete” Photo: 20th Century Fox The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Machete” ($3.9 million) #2 “The American” ($3.8 million) #3 “Takers” ($3 million) #4 “The Last Exorcism” ($2.3 million) #5 “Going the Distance” ($2.2 million) “Machete” was a cut above the competition in a close Friday box-office race crowded with new releases. According to reports , the sexed-up, action-packed Robert Rodriguez-directed film took first place with $3.9 million on Friday. However, the star-heavy caper, which boasts performances from Jessica Alba and Danny Trejo, and a buzzed-about screen turn from Lindsay Lohan , just barely slipped past The American.” The George Clooney thriller, which revolves around an assassin who lands in Italy for a final job, kicked off the weekend with $3.8 million. Friday’s haul bumps the film’s cumulative take to $7 million since the movie landed in theaters on Wednesday. Rounding out an action-heavy top three, “Takers” pulled in $3 million during its second Friday in theaters. Although the film opened at #1 last weekend, it appears news of the film’s star T.I.’s arrest hasn’t completely doused the fire of the heist flick. The film also boasts appearances from Idris Elba and singer Chris Brown, who has recently triumphed on the music charts with his single “Deuces.” The movie has made an estimated $29.5 million since landing in theaters. The horror movie “The Last Exorcism,” which nabbed the second-place slot in a photo-finish box-office race against “Takers” last week, slipped to the #4 spot. The creep-fest raked in $2.3 million during its second Friday on screens, which nudged its total gross to $27 million. The rom-com “Going the Distance,” starring Drew Barrymore and real-life on-and-off beau Justin Long , debuted in fifth place. The movie, which follows a young couple working to sustain the spark in their long-distance relationship, scored $2.2 million in ticket sales.
