If you’re a celebrity who owns a fantastical ranch full of spaceship paraphernalia, chances are you have a passing relationship with reality, anyway. Unfortunately, it turns out George Lucas and reality are barely even acquaintances, as Seth Rogen just revealed that Mr. Lucas allegedly holds a sincere belief in Mayan apocalypse lore . Special Effects Guru Grant McCune of Star Wars Fame Dies at 67

Oscar-winning special effects artist Grant McCune, one of the original members of George Lucas’ F/X team, has passed away at 67 from complications from cancer. Chances are that McCune played a major role in your childhood and adult life with his work on Star Wars , Star Trek: The Motion Picture or maybe Spaceballs . In remembrance of McCune and the model-work he helped pioneer, here’s a making of video of some more recent miniatures work his special effects company did on Spider-Man . After that, take a look at clip from Star Wars: A New Hope which showcases the work which won McCune an Oscar. Rest in peace.

Why Irvin Kershner Mattered

Irvin Kershner has died at the age of 87. He leaves behind some recognizable films ( The Flim Flam Man with George C. Scott; Eyes of Laura Mars with Faye Dunaway) and several sequels of various prominence ( The Return of a Man Called Horse , Robocop II and the renegade James Bond film Never Say Never Again ), never afraid to explore and extend the story of someone else’s work. So, really, it’s not a huge surprise in hindsight that he accepted the challenge of The Empire Strikes Back , the 1980 effort continuing the story that George Lucas started three years earlier with Star Wars . But could anybody have expected Kershner to knock this particular sequel out of the f*cking park?
