25 Headlines Worth Wishing For in the Great Hollywood News Drought of 2010

The American electoral climate this week may be wired with all kinds of new, polarizing developments, and the Gulf of Mexico may yet fill with 40 million gallons of BP’ s oil . The job market may be rebounding , but the economy remains sluggish overall. The Chicago Blackhawks last night won their first Stanley Cup in nearly 50 years. In other words, folks, there are things to talk about — but here at Movieline, where the entertainment industry provides the principal for all our pop-cultural news brokerage, a drought of anything remotely interesting has crippled our operation for nearly a week now. The A-Team or The Karate Kid this weekend? Come on, Hollywood! With this in mind, here are some recommended suggestions and/or arcs for stories that would make this beat infinitely more interesting, like, now . Suggest your own below.

Is This the Plot of the Next Indiana Jones?

After fans, critics and co-star Shia LaBeouf trashed Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull — pop quiz: Can you remember anything about that film besides the nuked fridge and swinging monkeys? — it seemed likely that the threatened fifth film in the once-iconic series would need some serious readjustments. And apparently, that’s happening! Maybe. Call it Indiana Jones and the Giant Grain of Salt .

We Kill Our Own – The 40th Anniversary of the Kent State Massacre

Da Nang, Vietnam May 2, 2010 Chuck Palazzo We Kill Our Own – The 40th Anniversary of the Kent State Massacre On May 4, 1970, at Kent State University, in the city of Kent, Ohio, members of the Ohio National Guard fired 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds, killing four students and wounding nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis. These were unarmed college students who were exercising their constitutional rights to speak their mind, to demonstrate peacefully, and to protest openly against the then recent incursion by US combat forces into Cambodia. http://www.veteranstoday.com/2010/05/01/we-kill-our-own-80%93-the-40th-anniv… added by: thedirtman

Scream 4 To Mock Horror Sequels By Being One

Because a new Nightmare on Elm Street isn’t enough to satiate your nostalgic horror needs, here comes Scream 4 . And, if you’re lucky, Scream 5 and Scream 6 . But lest you think this series reboot is just some desperate money grab for Bob Weinstein in the same way the Star Wars prequels were for George Lucas, Scream 4 plans to reinvent the genre… by slavishly sticking to the genre. Just don’t tell director Wes Craven.

Reintroducing the James Cameron Self-Parody Danger Zone!

Back in November, we eagerly introduced a recurring feature called the James Cameron Self-Parody Danger Zone , believing that the director would employ his usual, press-baiting braggadocio while promoting Avatar . Funny thing, though: he mostly kept his head down, letting the work speak for itself. Now that Avatar has become the highest-grossing film of all time, though, our old, quotable Jim is back and better than ever! Here are the highlights of his amazing new interview with EW , rated on our danger zone:

Every Star Wars Geek on Earth to Appear in Stitched-Together Remake

The event has been coming for a while, and now it appears April 19 is officially D-Day for the fan-generated Star Wars Uncut . The project solicited 15-second clips from 472 amateur filmmakers around the Web, finally tying the pieces together in a kind of patchwork remake of George Lucas’s original classic. No CGI Jabba the Hutt inserts, no revised battle scenes, no generally Lucasian BS — just Lego Obi-Wan cut down by his archnemesis Lego Darth Vader, grown men in casual Wookiee wear, abstract cutaways of dogs, incompetent green-screen deployment, creatively used ladders and so, so much more. I call dibs on the frozen Han Solo sequence in the inevitable Empire Strikes Back Uncut sequel. Click through for the video.

Attack of the Clones Eviscerated by Famous Phantom Menace Hater

We’ve introduced you before to Mike of Milwaukee, the internet critic that made something that could have been awful — a 10-part, 70-minute video series on the failings of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace — into something like a cathartic work of art. Naturally, it was only matter of time before Mike turned his knives on Attack of the Clones , and if you can skip past the unnecessary live-action interludes that allude to Mike’s propensity to chop up women (stick to what works, Mike!), it’s another keeper. Are we the only ones who picture Barth from You Can’t Do That On Television when listening to these? [via Hollywood Elsewhere ] All nine parts are after the jump:

Michael Jackson’s ‘Captain EO’ Returns To Disneyland

‘It was just like when I was 7, and it was amazing,’ one fan says after Tuesday’s premiere. By Joel Hanek Michael Jackson in “Captain EO” Photo: Disney After being sealed away in the Disney Vault for 13 years, Michael Jackson’s “Captain EO” saw the light of day on Tuesday at Disneyland. Disney surprised Jackson fans earlier this week when it issued an announcement that the 1986 film would be returning to the Tomorrowland Theater. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and produced by George Lucas, the 17-minute 3-D film reportedly cost $30 million to make — setting a record at the time for the most expensive short film ever made. The story follows EO (Jackson) on a journey with his fuzzy alien friends to deliver a gift to the evil Witch Queen (Anjelica Huston). The feature originally ran exclusively in Disney parks from 1986-1997, just four years after the pop star was first charged with child molestation allegations. Interest in the futuristic sci-fi film was reinvigorated after the sudden passing of Michael Jackson last June, when fans began campaigning on Facebook for the movie’s return. According to Disney , more than 500 people (some in EO-inspired costumes) lined up to catch Tuesday’s 10 a.m. premiere. Some had even spent the night outside the gates in order to see the first screening. “I loved it,” one fan commented. “I grew up on it, so I’m so excited that it’s back.” Some of those who enjoyed “Captain EO” during its original run said they were excited to share the experience with a new generation. “I absolutely loved it,” said one parent. “It was just like when I was 7, and it was amazing. I’m so glad I could bring my little one. She’s 3, and she loved it too — huge Michael Jackson fan!” While Disneyland says “Captain EO” is running as a limited engagement, a spokesperson told KTLA that it will continue to play as long as it’s popular. British Court: Stormtroopers don’t belong to Lucas

Everyone who wants to make their own Stormtrooper costume without fear of reprisals from George Lucas, move to Britain. That seems to be the message sent by the British courts, which have just declared that Star Wars' Stormtroopers aren't copyrightable. The British Court of Appeals upheld the original British verdict that the familiar white-and-black costume couldn't be considered copyrighted because it wasn't art
