Georgia State Dems Put Super Tuesday To Good Use

‘What’s the best thing to do? Register voters!’ Young Democrats leader Kendra Kelly tells MTV News. By Becca Frucht Students congregate at the Georgia State University courtyard Photo: MTV News ATLANTA — After the collegiate calm of Georgia Tech — cheerful but dignified — the eclectic action at the Georgia State University quad was just what I needed to wake up after an early morning stalking voters at the polls . (And confession time: I ate way too many biscuits.) This campus hot spot is where students congregate every Tuesday and Thursday from 12 to 1 p.m. (no one has classes then) to peep the Greeks “strollin’ ” and various student organizations promoting their causes. First stop in the coed chaos was a chat with Kendra Kelly, a 22-year-old double major in political science/ journalism, who also happens to be the president of the Young Democrats at GSU. She was not content to take a backseat on the GOP’s Super Tuesday , during which 419 delegates are up for grabs in 10 states among the four candidates still in the hunt. And she wasn’t onboard with trying to manipulate the vote by taking advantage of Georgia’s open primary and casting a ballot for the Republican she thinks is most likely to lose to President Obama in November. Instead, she and her crew of boisterous politicas told MTV’s Power of 12 that they were opting to steal the Republican thunder in a more proactive way. “We decided instead of strategizing our votes, because we have an open primary, what’s the best thing to do? Register voters!” she said. “And furthermore, get their information so we can keep up with them … and keep them informed, so when it comes time to vote in November, they vote on our side.” Right next door to the rowdy Young Dems voter drive, we found 23-year-old Alison Fox from Students for Sensible Drug Policy, who is flexing her political muscle by abstaining from today’s primary, despite the fact that she applauds Libertarian Congressman Ron Paul’s approach to legalizing marijuana. (This seems to be a rather popular stance of his among college students. Just sayin’.) “I believe that right now I’m not gonna vote for any of the Republican candidates only because, unfortunately, I believe that money has too much to say in the candidacy rather than views and policy,” she said. Considering she also told us how her state’s front-runner, former Georgia Congressman Newt Gingrich , grossed out her fellow activists when they attended one of his recent rallies, it doesn’t look like anyone from SSDP will be adding to Gingrich’s delegate count today. “I feel like, that once again, the money comes into play when it comes to his values and his politics,” Fox said of Gingrich. “Actually some of our members from the SSDP went to both the Ron Paul rally and the Newt Gingrich rally which was held in Georgia and while they left the Ron Paul rally feeling enlightened, they left the Newt Gingrich rally feeling nauseated. And very concerned about their futures.” Even without getting their vote on this Super Tuesday, these young women are proving actions can speak louder than polls. Get Well: Rick Ross Finally Decides To Take It Easy, Cancels All Shows This Weekend

We’re glad Rozay is taking his recent health scare more seriously than he seemed to initially. According to TMZ , Rozay has cancelled the second show he had scheduled for this weekend. With his health still a major concern, Rick Ross has decided to play it easy this weekend … rescheduling his L.A. concert for 2012 so he can focus on his recovery. As TMZ first reported, Rick suffered two seizures last week before a performance in Memphis — which he canceled — and promoters think it’s still too soon for Ross to get back on stage. Promoters believe Ross needs more time to get better — so they contacted his people and the two camps agreed to reschedule the L.A. performance to January. Promoters also tell TMZ, “Pushing [Ross] to do a show that he was not prepared to do was not beneficial to anyone.” Yesterday, our sister site HipHopWired.com reported that Rozay’s Atlanta performance, which was scheduled for this Friday as part of Georgia State University homecoming festivities had also been cancelled. While Ross has yet to speak about his health and there are still no details about exactly what caused him to have two seizures in one day , at least three of his friends have revealed in recent interviews that they are encouraging him to chill and focus on his health, and that he is absolutely taking it light.

“Cop Killer” Comes To Life In 2010, Most Deadly Year For Police Officers

If you remember the uproar that Ice-T’s rock group, Body Count, caused with their incendiary track “Cop Killer” then you can be sure that somehow, someway, the significant rise of police deaths will be tracked back the urban community. Two officers in a remote Alaska town were ambushed as they chatted on a street. A California officer and deputy were killed by an arson suspect with a high-powered rifle as they tried to serve a warrant. Two other officers doing anti-drug work were gunned down by men along a busy Arkansas highway. These so-called cluster killings of more than one officer helped make 2010 a particularly deadly year for law enforcement. Deaths in the line of duty jumped 37 percent to about 160 from 117 the year before, according to numbers as of Tuesday compiled by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, a nonprofit that tracks police deaths. There also was a spike in shooting deaths. Fifty-nine federal, state and local officers were killed by gunfire in 2010, a 20 percent jump from last year’s figures, when 49 were killed. The total does not include the death of a Georgia State Patrol trooper shot twice in the face Monday night in Atlanta as he tried to make a traffic stop. And 73 officers died in traffic incidents, a rise from the 51 killed in 2009, according to the data. Craig Floyd, director of the Washington-based fund, said the rise in fatalities could be an aftershock of the nation’s economic troubles as officers in some communities cope with slashed budgets. We salute all the men and women who work tirelessly, and for little pay, to make sure that our streets are as safe as possible. Clearly all cops aren’t good cops and to those crooked, racist, a**holes, we say…protect your neck, Karma is a b*tch! Source
