Parental Checklist, Student Bill Of Rights Among New Resources To Support Parents And Students As millions of children prepare to head back to school, the feds announced new tools to help African-American students excel in the classroom. A new parental checklist is a framework that moms and dads, mentors and teachers can use to improve African-American student performance and help close the so-called “achievement gap” between black students and their white peers. “Our hope is that these tools support black families,” said David Johns, the executive director of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans, “and all caring and concerned individuals who should be engaged in the work of supporting our children, our communities and our country, to ensure that excellence for all is not a goal, but something that is required and a prerequisite for how we do business.” Using input from advocacy groups like the National Urban League, America Achieves and the United Negro College Fund, the U.S. Department of Education’s checklist includes questions parents can ask, like how educators will keep them informed on their child’s performance, how parents and teachers will make sure their child’s school is a safe, inclusive and supportive place and how educators and parents can work together if the child falls behind. Also released was a student bill of rights, a guide to what parents and students should expect in education: access to high quality pre-school, elementary and secondary schools, as well as universities and community colleges. African-Americans have historically lagged behind their white peers when it comes to overall student achievement. Black students are less likely to go to pre-school, and more likely to attend high poverty schools and drop out of high school, according to data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Archival photos from the LaGrange Daily News in Georgia show Houser trying to present himself as a respectable businessman back in 2001, shortly before hanging a swastika banner in his law-breaking business. It was one of many early signs of trouble for the mentally disturbed man who fatally shot two people and wounded nine before turning the gun on himself at a screening of the comedy “Trainwreck” in Lafayette, La. Thursday night. There goes that term again. “Mentally disturbed”. Smh. Back in 2001, John Houser begged the LaGrange City Council to allow him to keep the liquor license for his local bar after he was caught slangin’ booze to the youngins. When his license was ultimately denied, this is how he expressed his displeasure: Houser’s bizarre protest against the decision put him back in local headlines. He hung a six-foot banner outside his pub with a swastika and the phrase “Welcome to LaGrange.” The sick stunt meant to liken his local government to the Nazi party, he explained. “The people who used (swastikas) — the Nazis — they did what they damn well pleased,” he told the LaGrange paper. The article showed him grinning as he stood under the inflammatory banner. B-b-b-but wait, it gets worse! In the years after this small-town spat, Houser’s behavior only grew more erratic and hateful. He praised Adolf Hitler’s “pragmatism” in online message boards and made violent threats against his family, leading to an involuntary hospital stay, a restraining order from family members and a failed attempt to get a pistol permit in 2006. Houser’s criminal history dates back to a 2005 domestic violence complaint, and courts records described him as having “a history of mental health issues,” including manic depression and bipolar disorder. Via TMZ : Bobbi Kristina’s boyfriend Nick Gordon has not said a word about the bathtub incident that apparently will prove fatal, but TMZ now knows Nick’s story … that he did nothing to harm Bobbi Kristina and drugs did her in. A member of Bobby Brown’s family recorded Nick on February 21, 3 weeks after Bobbi Kristina was rushed to the hospital. Even though Nick didn’t know he was being taped, the call was legally recorded because Georgia is a 1-party state. Nick says, “I’ll tell you the honest truth, Krissy, she was under a lot of stress and we were all doing drugs and you know, all, all drinking, bro.” And then he said this: “She just did too much man. She, listen, listen bro. I will officially stay from bath tubs forever, I’ll tell you that.” He then rails on those who think Bobbi Kristina’s injuries prove he tried to kill her, saying, “When Krissy wakes up she’ll tell the truth to everybody. Everybody will feel stupid as f***… You know Krissy got in an accident 2 days before this happened and the man is in critical condition right now.” He then warns the family, saying, “If they take her off that life support, the police are going to have to take me down bro.” Gordon is considered a person of interest in the case, and if Bobbi Kristina dies it will become a murder investigation.

NFL Lineman John Abraham Arrested For Fight In Atlanta Strip Club How can you possibly be this angry when you’re surrounded by all those cakes ? Via HuffingtonPost NFL veteran John Abraham turned himself in Thursday after a warrant was issued for an alleged assault at an Atlanta suburb strip club in February, police in Brookhaven, Georgia, told The Huffington Post. Abraham was wanted on a charge of misdemeanor battery. A defensive end who played for the Jets, Falcons and Cardinals over 15 seasons, Abraham is accused of striking Vladmir Ako five times at the Pink Pony on Feb. 28, bloodying Ako’s nose. The two were in the beverage business together. Abraham surrendered at around 3 p.m. and was booked into DeKalb County Jail, a police spokesman said. He was later released on bond. The warrant had been issued just days ago because police only recently obtained surveillance video of the alleged attack, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution noted. The same strip club has been associated with other trouble for Abraham. Last summer he was arrested on drunk driving charges after he departed the Pink Pony. Phaedra Parks Refuses To Take Sons To See Apollo On Father’s Day Phaedra Parks has made no secret of the fact that she’s not a fan of letting little Ayden and “Mr. President” see their father Apollo Nida in an orange jumpsuit behind bars. But with her recent refusal to go through with the divorce she’s automatically eligible for under Georgia law, it seems like Phaedra may softening on her stance toward her jailbird hubby. So, is there a even a small chance that Phaedra finally loosened up and Apollo finally see his boys on Father’s Day? Yeah, right. Via TMZ : Apollo Nida had an extra sad Father’s Day, locked up in his federal prison cell … without a single family visitor. Apollo’s estranged wife, Phaedra Parks didn’t bring their two sons to visit him in prison on Sunday. Sources tell TMZ … psychologists told her it wouldn’t be good for 5-year-old Ayden and 1-year-old Dylan to see dad locked up — especially because they’re so young. The boys still showed Apollo some love, sending cards and photos of what they’ve been doing. As we’ve reported, Apollo is serving an 8 year prison sentence for stolen checks and money laundering. We’re told Phaedra hasn’t visited him once — however, she does transfer funds to his prison books so he can make purchases while in the slammer. Just a guess, but he’d probably choose seeing his kids over a fresh pack of cigs. At this rate, the next time those boys see their father will be when he steps through the prison gates back out to freedom.

For someone who plays a priest on television, Seth Gilliam did not have himself a very holy Sunday. The actor (who starred on The Walking Dead Season 5 as Father Gabriel Stokes and who is also known for his role on The Wire) was busted over the weekend for going 107 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone. According to TMZ insider, Gilliam admitted to police officers that he had consumed three beers and a shot of liquor. After searching his vehicle, police also found a joint that was hidden in the arm rest. He later recorded a .107 blood alcohol level. The incident took place around 2 p.m. in Peachtree City, Georgia, with authorities not caring about Gilliam’s hilarious excuse for nearly doubling the speed limit: That he was driving a Chevrolet Cruze rental car and is used to a Jeep. Gilliam was taken taken into custody (for speeding, DUI and marijuana possession) and tossed into Fayette County Jail. He was eventually released after posting a $9,818 bond.
