Debate already aswirl for looming Civil War 150th anniversary

CHARLESTON, S.C. — At South Carolina's Secession Gala, men in frock coats and militia uniforms and women in hoopskirts will sip mint juleps as a band called Unreconstructed plays “Dixie.” In Georgia, they will re-enact the state's 1861 secession convention. And Alabama will hold a mock swearing-in of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Across the South, preparations are underway for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. And although many organizations are working to incorporate both the black and the white experience, there are complaints that some events will glorify the Old South and the Lost Cause while overlooking the fundamental reason for the war: slavery. “It's almost like celebrating the Holocaust,” said Benard Simelton, president of the Alabama conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. “Our rights were taken away and we were treated as less than human beings. To relive that in a celebratory way I don't think is right.” Mark Simpson, commander of the South Carolina Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, acknowledged that an event such as the Dec. 20 Secession Gala in Charleston is seen by some Americans as politically incorrect. But “to us it's part of our nature and our culture and our heritage.” “Slavery was a very big issue. Anyone who denies that has his head in a hole somewhere,” said Simpson, a Spartanburg businessman who counts 32 ancestors who fought for the South. “But slavery was not the single nor primary cause, and that's where the line gets drawn.” Read more: Debate already aswirl for looming Civil War 150th anniversary – The Denver Post http://www.denverpost.com/nationworld/ci_16836311?source=rss#ixzz17uJXuTMH Read The Denver Post's Terms of Use of its content: http://www.denverpost.com/termsofuse added by: Radical_Centrist

Hooded, Noose-Carrying Snowman Spreads Holiday Hate In Idaho

Residents in Hayden, Idaho were surprised and appalled to discover a massive noose-carrying, KKK hood-wearing snowman erected on the front lawn of a neighborhood home. Several parents noticed the nearly 10-foot-tall snowman while driving their children to school on Wednesday, KXLY4 reported. The snowman has a pointed KKK-style hood and an outstretched right hand with a noose in it. In addition to the snowman, the home also has an Aryan nations flag on display. This is not the first time the homeowner, a self-described white separatist, has been the subject of a media report because of his actions. In October, KXLY4 reported that the homeowner passed out bullets on Halloween. The homeowner later removed the noose from his snowman, after being visited by county sheriff's deputies and informed that he could face criminal charges for hanging a noose. The pointed hat of the snowman has also reportedly been knocked off. Other incidents involving the Ku Klux Klan have occurred around the nation over the past few months. Members of the Ku Klux Klan and the Supreme White Alliance rallied at Augusta State University after a student there was told her beliefs about homosexuality were “unethical and incompatible with the prevailing views of the counseling profession.” Based on her religious beliefs, Jennifer Keeton, who has no known affiliation with the Ku Klux Klan or any other hate group, considers intimacy between adults of the same gender to be sinful. Keeton filed suit after the university threatened to expel her if she did not undergo a “re-education plan,” claiming her First Amendment rights were being violated. “We're trying to protest the constitutional rights that they are trying to take away from her,” said a grand dragon with the KKK, Bobby Spurlock. “She has not contacted us, but we were contacted by someone that is aware of her.” At their rally, the dozens of protesters were confronted by nearly 300 counter-protesters from homosexual and civil rights organizations, The Augusta Chronicle reported. “We had 200 people rallying against them, and they had eight people,” said one counter protester. “They looked like idiots.” Hours after ending their protest, the Klan members held an initiation ceremony at a house in Warrenville, South Carolina. Later, the Klan members ceremonially burned a cross. The protest at Augusta State University was not the only appearance the Klan made in Georgia this year. Last month, members of Klan rallied on the steps of the Gilmer County courthouse in Ellijay and, earlier this year, another Klan rally took place in the town of Nahunta. “Certainly in Nahunta and Ellijay, although there were 40 robed Klansmen — and that's a significant number when you think about it today — there were probably 300 to 500 spectators,” Bill Nigut, Southeast director of the Anti-Defamation League, told WXIA. “And in Nahunta and Ellijay both, there were many people nodding in agreement, supportive.” “They continue to be anti-Semitic and they continue to be racists,” continues Nigut. “In an attempt to find a way to communicate with the mainstream communities, they take on issues they think the communities share in common with them.” On October 26th, the University of Wisconsin at Waukesha campus was vandalized with swastikas and the initials “KKK.” On October 20th, KAIT8 reported that a man in southeast Missouri decorated his yard by placing a Ku Klux Klan figure next to a black man hanging from a noose. The man, who said the display speaks for itself, later removed the “decorations” at the request of the county sheriff. On October 8th, residents of a neighborhood in Indiana complained about finding Ku Klux Klan fliers in front of their homes. “Martinsville, over the years, has kind of gotten rid of that reputation that we used to have down here,” one resident told 6News. “You get tired of all the junk mail, and I would consider that true junk mail.” added by: toyotabedzrock

Voter anger fuels support for “Repeal Amendment”

Rapidly growing support for the “Repeal Amendment” – a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow a vote by two-thirds of the states to repeal an act of Congress — symbolizes the intense level of anger Americans have with Washington, according to observers. In September, Virginia stood alone as the only state where leaders in the state legislature had shown an interest in passing the amendment, but that number has now grown to nine states. State legislators in South Carolina, Florida, Utah, Indiana, Texas, New Jersey, Minnesota, and Georgia have since expressed interest in the amendment. Hits on the RepealAmendment.org website have mushroomed over the past month, and the amendment has garnered support from Republican Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, Republican Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, and soon-to-be House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia, according to “Repeal Amendment” executive director Marianne Moran. Moran also sees future opportunities for legislative support in states such as Pennsylvania, Ohio, and North Dakota, among others. “It just restores the balance of government between the states and the federal government as the founding fathers had originally intended,” Moran said. “The fact we have nine states already onboard shows the momentum, and I think the groundswell [of support] is the Tea Party.” Moran continued: “The reason we have the support from all of the people we do in all of these legislatures is that the people who have been groundswelling for the last two years want limited government, and this amendment is all about limited government.” Pollster Scott Rasmussen told The Daily Caller he would likely find overwhelming support from most Americans were he to conduct a poll on support for the “Repeal Amendment.” “It really reflects an electorate that is frustrated, and a lot of the people that have not been involved in the process before [are] not sure what needs to be done, and they’re pretty upset about [the health care] law,” Rasmussen said. Rasmussen believes Tea Party activists and most Americans have a shared desire for lower taxes and reduced spending in addition to a shared belief that politicians hold them in contempt. This sentiment, he said, has caused proposals like the “Repeal Amendment” to gain traction. “There is no trust in government, and until that is restored there is no way to move forward,” Rasmussen said. “This is tapping into that same mindset. Clear the Road: Lindsay Lohan Regains License

Lindsay Lohan has regained the right to operate a motor vehicle. We are happy for her … and scared bit for residents of Palm Springs, California. The L.A. County Probation Department and officials at the Betty Ford clinic signed off this morning, so Lindsay can drive again. Special treatment? Not so much. Officials allow this for people “at Lindsay’s care and treatment level,” though it’s still odd, as her legal problems stem from driving. SCARED? It’s LiLo, we wouldn’t blame you. [Photo: Pacific Coast News] Meanwhile, Michael Lohan is so stoked about his daughter regaining her driver’s license, dude gave her his own Mercedes Benz to tool around town in! Not only is she planning on having Thanksgiving with dad , she’s cruising around in the (very expensive) wheels MiLo lent her to prove his trust. Michael dropped the convertible off Monday for her to drive as she pleases. How nice. We’d still keep a lengthy following distance … but nice.

CyHi The Prynce Calls In Some Friends For Allies Mixtape

Big Sean, J. Cole and more show up on the street set, in Mixtape Daily. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway and Rahman Dukes CyHi the Prynce Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : The Allies Headliner : CyHi the Prynce Key Cameos : Big Sean, Yelawolf, Donnis, Big K.R.I.T., Pill, J. Cole and more Essential Info : You would think on the heels of dropping a critically acclaimed mixtape, CyHi the Prynce would take his act on the road or bask in the praise. But the Decatur, Georgia, native must subscribe to the motto “no rest for the weary.” Just a month after dropping Royal Flush, CyHi is set to drop another collection to the streets, the collabo-heavy Allies. “Everyone was asking me on the Royal Flush [project], why didn’t I do some songs with other guys,” Prynce told MTV News’ Sway Calloway during an appearance on “RapFix Live.” “So it was cool, they liked the songs, they just wanted to hear me with some of my peers as well.” The forthcoming 14-song collection is tentatively slated to arrive in mid-December, just in time for the holidays, he said of his gift to fans. So far, he’s nine songs into the project and looking to lock in his G.O.O.D. Music crew member Pusha T for the potential first offering, “A Thousand Pounds.” The track is a thought-provoking number about what the MCs featured on the song would do should they come into that amount of money. The mixtape will be the upstart MC’s third of the year, following his Greg Street and Green Lantern-helmed The Prynce of Jacks and last month’s Royal Flush “I feel like I can do it more than once, more than three times,” CyHi said of releasing more material. “I gave y’all my nukes. I threw a couple of nukes in. Other than that, it’s the same me, just more wise and more groomed.” Other Heat This Week

Joy Behar Lectures Pastor About Homosexuality on ‘The View’, Insists Biblical View Leads to Bullying

ABC's “The View” hosted pastor Joel Osteen Tuesday, author of the book The Christmas Spirit – but the conversation took a controversial turn and went from Christmas to homosexuality. Co-host Joy Behar belittled Osteen about his conservative Christian beliefs on the matter. ABC's Barbara Walters first popped the question in the middle of the interview, flagging it was a “controversial” topic. She referenced a previous quote made by Osteen on the show about homosexuality not being “God's best” for a person's life. Walters asked him how he felt about a Georgia pastor who recently came out and said he was gay. After Osteen's tepid response, Behar interrupted him and flatly lectured him that homosexuality is natural. “It's not a choice, Pastor,” she asserted. “It's not a choice, and therefore I don't think that God would look askance at homosexuality in that way, because it's not a choice. They're born this way, people are born this way.”

By Gil Kaufman Kid Rock Photo: JulNeil Lupin/ Redferns Some people celebrate their 40th birthday with a nice dinner out, maybe a trip to Las Vegas or an extravagant purchase like a car they really can’t afford. Kid Rock, as you must surely have noticed at this point, is not most people. That’s why the American Badass is tipping his hat to the big 4-0 with the biggest headlining date of his career at Detroit’s Ford Field, his hometown 60,000-seat football stadium, as part of the upcoming tour in support of his new album, Born Free.
