Bizarre Insects Inspire Unintentionally Surreal Art

Photo: MFN Berlin In the first half of the last century, a German blacksmith named Alfred Keller began crafting some of the most surrealistic, alien-seeming sculptures the world had ever seen — delicate works which took months to complete. These incredible creations, meticulous in detail, rivaled even the most imaginative pieces from contemporary artists — but they weren’t inspired by some absinth-induced vision or fit of madness. Indeed, Keller’s mu… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Clever Bike Lock Can Climb a Light Pole (Video)

When it comes to thwarting bike thieves , even the best bike-locks can’t guarantee your cycle won’t get jacked. But here’s a simple idea — instead of chaining up your ride to an object at ground level, imagine if you had a lock that could hoist it high overhead, safely out of reach from would-be robbers. Well, that’s exactly what gave one group of German designers the bright idea to create a bike lock that can climb a light pole…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

German Zoo Forces Gay Vultures to Mate With Females

German zookeepers are forcing two male vultures who prefer nesting together to mate with females, sparking outrage from gay rights activists who accuse the zoo of discriminating against birds of a different feather. The trouble began back in March, when Guido and Detlef, two Griffon vultures, decided to move in together. The lovebirds began crafting a two-man nest out of stray twigs in a communal birdcage at their zoo in the town of Munster, in northwest Germany. Both birds are predatory males, but seemed to enjoy one another's company more than that of any female. They spent their days grooming one another with their beaks and fortifying their nest — though other vultures occasionally stole their building materials, as if to spite them. “They always sat so closely together. They defended their nest from the other vultures,” the zoo's curator, Dirk Wewers, told The Daily Telegraph of Australia. But Wewers explains their preference for one another as second-best. “A suitable female was missing and in such a case vultures look for companionship from the next best thing, even if it is a male,” the zookeeper said. “Detlef looked for a bird of the opposite sex but settled with Guido.” Poor Guido. Griffon vultures aren't classified as endangered, but the purpose of their captivity in zoos is to allow them to reproduce in safe environments, to eventually grow their species' numbers and release them back into the wild. Zookeepers decided that Guido and Detlef's living arrangements weren't helping that goal. So last week, Guido was snatched from his partner and shipped 400 miles east to a zoo in the Czech Republic, where a new bride awaited him. In his place is a Czech temptress whom zookeepers hope can seduce Detlef. “Detlef is reorienting himself now,” Wewers told the Telegraph. But he acknowledged that so far, Detlef and the Czech bird haven't touched one another. Gay rights activists held a small demonstration in front of the zoo, waving a rainbow flag and decrying the zookeepers for standing in the way of love. “This is like in the dark middle ages, forcibly making a creature sexually re-orient itself by tearing its partner from its side,” The German Herald quoted one protester as saying. Others said they worried that what's happened to the birds could one day happen to humans as well. Guido and Detlef aren't the first gay couple from the animal kingdom to make headlines. Two gay male penguins, Harry and Pepper, started living together at the San Francisco Zoo in 2003, and five years later adopted, incubated and hatched an egg abandoned by a female penguin, Time magazine reported. But their romance didn't last. Last year, Harry left Pepper for a recently widowed female, Linda. added by: MrMxyzptlk

Vatican Clarifies Condom Comments – Condoms OK In Certain Circumstances

VATICAN CITY — In a seismic shift on one of the most profound – and profoundly contentious – Roman Catholic teachings, the Vatican said Tuesday that condoms are the lesser of two evils when used to curb the spread of AIDS, even if their use prevents a pregnancy. The position was an acknowledgment that the church's long-held anti-birth control stance against condoms doesn't justify putting lives at risk. “This is a game-changer,” declared the Rev. James Martin, a prominent Jesuit writer and editor. The new stance was staked out as the Vatican explained Pope Benedict XVI's comments on condoms and HIV in a book that came out Tuesday based on his interview with a German journalist. The Vatican still holds that condom use is immoral and that church doctrine forbidding artificial birth control remains unchanged. Still, the reassessment on condom use to help prevent disease carries profound significance, particularly in Africa where AIDS is rampant. added by: jubal

After ‘Deathly Hallows – Part 1,’ What’s Next For Daniel Radcliffe?

Aside from wrapping up the ‘Harry Potter’ series, Radcliffe has a couple of films lined up and will return to Broadway. By Eric Ditzian Daniel Radcliffe Photo: MTV News Following the exhaustive international “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” press tour, Daniel Radcliffe might have the chance to sneak a few Z’s. Or not. The kid has a jam-packed schedule of projects lined up that will keep him busy for the next few years. That means even after the “Potter” franchise is done, you’ll have the chance to see Radcliffe on stage and screen for a long time to come. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2” The franchise isn’t done, remember? Production wrapped up this past summer, and the film is set to hit theaters in July. Will it be in 3-D? What will Radcliffe look like as a 40-something adult in the film’s much-discussed epilogue ? These are just a few of the questions we have about the upcoming installment. “Woman in Black” The 21-year-old took a 10-day break from “Woman in Black” to promote “Deathly Hallows – Part 1,” but he’ll soon be headed back to the set for another four weeks of filming. Based on a 1983 thriller by Susan Hill, the supernatural thriller follows Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe) as a lawyer who travels to sort out a recently deceased client’s affairs, encountering dark secrets and haunting presences when he arrives. Radcliffe told us he’s been loving the production, which is just a fraction of the size of a “Potter” film. “It’s faster,” he said. “I’m loving it. It’s very, very exciting. “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” Radcliffe made his Broadway debut in 2008’s “Equus.” He’s heading back to the Great White Way in February for “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” He’ll play J. Pierrepont Finch, a young New York City window washer who climbs the corporate ranks until his own profit-at-any-cost ideas threaten to bring everything crashing down. Previews are set to begin on February 26 at the Al Hirschfeld Theater, with the musical opening on March 27. “All Quiet on the Western Front” The Brit has already lined up another big-screen literary adaptation, though this one has nothing to do with witches, wizards or ghosts. In “All Quiet on the Western Front,” Radcliffe will play Paul Baumer, a German soldier sent to fight in the trenches during World War I. The shoot is expected to kick off in spring 2012. GLOBAL POLITICAL AWAKENING: BREAKING: Senate votes cloture on S 510 – must now be voted on in 60 days

By a vote of 74 to 25, at noon today, the U.S. Senate voted for cloture on S 510, the Food Safety Modernization Act, which means it must now be voted on in the full Senate within 60 days. All amendments to the controversial food control bill must be completed by that time. One of S 510′s supporters, Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, opposed cloture because modifications to the bill do not reflect its original intent, he said on C-SPAN. Chambliss fully supports giving the FDA more power over the US food supply, but is unhappy with the Manager’s Amendment submitted in August. He objects to the small farm exclusion on the grounds that the $500,000 annual gross revenue limit is an arbitrary number that is too quickly reached by small farms. He called for numerous amendments to the bill as it appears today. Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio supports S 510, and called out the statistics by the Centers for Disease Control that report there are 76 million foodborne illnesses a year, with 5,000 resulting in death. What Brown did not say was that the FDA — the very agency further empowered by S 510 — is responsible for the approval of pharmaceutical drugs that results in 100,000 deaths a year. None of the supporters of S 510 will acknowledge the corrupt nature of the Food and Drug Administration. Monsanto executives now work at the FDA or on President’s Obama’s Food Safety Task Force. What legislators continue to ignore from the public is that we do not support giving federal agencies even more power — especially over something as inherently private as food choices. None of the legislators will discuss the FDA raids on natural food operations which sickened no one, while it allowed Wright County Egg to sicken people for decades before finally taking action. Yesterday, Senator Bob Casey informed his Pennsylvania constituents that the$1.6 billion price tag for S 510 will stop food smuggling in the United States. I kid you not: “These provisions add personnel to detect, track and remove smuggled food and call for the development and implementation of strategies to stop food from being smuggled into the United States.” Is food smuggling a problem in the United States? Well, the “biggest food smuggling case in the history of the U.S.” busted wide open in September. Eleven Chinese and German executives were indicted for bringing in $40 million worth of commercial grade honey over a five year period, reportedly to avoid paying $80 million in import fees. (No wonder they tried smuggling.) That amounts to 3 percent of the 1.35 billion-dollar honey market over a five-year period. Since that was the biggest food smuggling bust, food smuggling is not the problem. Clearly. It hardly seems worth it for the US taxpayer to cough up $1.6 billion so the FDA can stop such illegal activities, especially in our current economic recession. Blogger Steve Green interprets the S 510 smuggling language to mean: “It would allow the government, under Maritime Law, to define the introduction of any food into commerce (even direct sales between individuals) as smuggling into “the United States.” Since under that law, the US is a corporate entity and not a location, “entry of food into the US” covers food produced anywhere within the land mass of this country and “entering into” it by virtue of being produced.”

Julia Stegner Tits for Vogue Germany of the Day

Julia Stegner is some German Model and based on what I know about German people, showing her tits is really fucking tame, cuz German’s are way more into chaining each other up and shitting down each other’s throats, so I really shouldn’t be making a big deal about this shit by giving this bitch her own post, but I can’t help myself, when I see nipples for fashion magazines, I get hopeful that one day my site will get 100 pages of million dollar advertisers per issue….cuz fashion photography is just strategic porn….not that tits are enough to get me off in this desensitized state…but you get what I’m saying….If you’re even wasting your time reading this bullshit.

Volvo Working on Storing Energy in a Car’s Body Panels

“Imagine a car whose body also serves as a rechargeable battery.” One of the main challenges with electric cars is that batteries are bulky and heavy. Volvo is trying to solve that problem by turning a car’s body panels into an energy storage device, an idea that, if feasible, would kill two birds with one stone by freeing up space inside the car and making it relatively lighter…. Is the Shweeb Ready for Prime Time?

The Shweeb is derived from the German “Schweben”, meaning to float or suspend. A logical name for a device invented by a New Zealander living in Tokyo. Commenters had issues when we wrote about it last year, But somebody likes it; It just won a million bucks in the Google 10 100 competition. Google writes: Shweeb is a concept for short to medium distance, urban personal transport, using human-powered vehicles on a monorail. We are providing $1 million to fund research and development to test Shweeb’s technology for an urban set… Read the full story on TreeHugger
