The wonders of modern medicine! This lucky fella has just re-entered society after the world’s most extensive full face transplant allowed him to stop hiding his disfigurement from the world. Richard Lee Norris received the transplant that has allowed him to regain the ability to speak and show expression just 7 months ago, but the medical staff at the University of Maryland Medical Center where he was operated on say that he is recovering very well! According to Fox News reports : Norris, from Hillsville, Va., suffered a severe injury in 1997 when a gun accident resulted in the loss of his upper and lower jaws, along with his lips and nose. According to Norris, he has spent the past 15 years as a hermit, hiding behind a surgical mask and rarely going out in public. Now, he said the transplant surgery has not only transformed his face – but his life as well. “People used to stare at me because of my disfigurement,” Norris said in a statement. “Now they can stare at me in amazement and in the transformation I have taken. I am now able to walk past people and no one even gives me a second look. My friends have moved on with their lives, starting families and careers. I can now start working on the new life given back to me.” Completed on March 20, 2012, Norris’s surgery involved replacing both jaws, teeth, tongue and skin – along with nerve and muscle tissue from his scalp to his neck. The 36-hour procedure was conducted by Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and chief of plastic, reconstructive and maxillofacial surgery at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center. “Our goal for Richard from the beginning was to restore facial harmony and functional balance in the most aesthetic manner possible through the complex transplantation of the facial bones, nerves, muscles, tongue, teeth and the associated soft tissues,” said Rodriguez in a statement. “Richard is exceeding my expectations this soon after his surgery, and he deserves great deal of credit for the countless hours spent practicing his speech and strengthening his new facial muscles. He’s one of the most courageous and committed individuals I know.” So far, Norris is starting to once again use his face to perform simple tasks he could do before the accident. He can smile and show expression, and doctors said that the right side of his face is at about 80 percent normal motor function – while his left sided is at about 40 percent. He can also eat primarily with his mouth, and he has regained the ability to smell and taste. “I am doing well. I spend a lot of my time fishing and working on my golf game. I am also enjoying time with my family and friends,” Norris said. “I do still have follow-up appointments with a lot of different doctors and therapists to ensure everything is healing up properly. I have been undergoing physical therapy and also speech therapy. I have been doing very well regaining my speech back. Each day it improves a little more.” Isn’t that incredible? According to Essence : Teased by her family and friends about her flat “pancake” booty, Apryl Michelle Brown had always been insecure about her backside. Once she got enough money, she told herself, she’d buy herself a better one. “I didn’t know if I wanted to look like Janet Jackson or J. Lo,” the Los Angeles cosmetologist, 46, says in an exclusive interview featured in the November issue of ESSENCE magazine. “I just wanted a new, bigger booty.” Tragically, her quest for curves cost her all her limbs and almost her life. In 2004, Brown says she paid a “pumper,” an unlicensed person, to inject industrial-grade silicone into her buttocks. Brown can’t recall how much the woman actually charged — maybe $500, maybe $1,000 — but over time, she says, the area became intensely irritated and painful, and the skin blackened. By early 2006 she says the silicone had hardened, causing severe pain and infection, ultimately requiring her to have lifesaving amputation of her limbs last year. Now adjusting to her new life with prosthetics, Brown shares her story — and her warning for others tempted to check out “pumping parties” — with writer Amy Elisa Keith in ESSENCE. “I was left here for a purpose,” she says. “I have to get the word out so that nobody else makes this choice.” We hope Apryl’s story is a warning that’s taken seriously. The Mid-Atlantic was rocked with storms yesterday. Rain, hail, 60 mph winds, and Tornadoes touched down in New York! As a swirling mass of black cloud swept over the Rockaways on Saturday morning…not one but two tornadoes ripped through parts of Brooklyn and Queens, causing as much bemusement as terror among New Yorkers unaccustomed to such aggressive weather. One tornado ripped through a beach club in Queens, one of several outbursts of severe weather across the New York region that flooded roads, felled power lines, and forced the delay of the United States Open. A second tornado touched down in Canarsie, Brooklyn, the National Weather Service said. The swirling columns of wind and water in Queens, captured by dozens of people on cellphones and almost instantly posted on the Internet, lasted only minutes, according to witnesses. But in that short time the tornado tore down walls, lifted roofs off homes and tangled power lines as it cut a path through the Rockaways, near Breezy Point. Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, who arrived in Breezy Point on Saturday afternoon to assess the damage, said there had been no reports of injuries. The second tornado struck Brooklyn about 11:30 a.m. with a speed of 110 miles an hour and traveled about half a mile, the Weather Service said. The severe weather was expected to continue into the night as a cold front moving in from the west made its way into the area, meeting up with the warm, moist air ahead of it and causing instability in the atmosphere. Tearful testimonies were in full force earlier today when iconic Hip Hop figures and artists all came out to give credit and pay their last respect . A constellation of stars — many of them wearing pins emblazoned with Lighty’s face — crowded a Manhattan funeral home to pay their respects. Sean Diddy Combs, Fat Joe, Rev. Run, Missy Elliott, Michael Bivens, Wyclef Jean, Ed Lover — each stopped by the open casket where Lighty was laid out in a black suit. The mourners also included rappers Lighty had worked with like 50 Cent, singers like Mary J. Blige and Lauryn Hill, celebrities like Gayle King and Nick Cannon, and other rap moguls like Andre Harrell, Lyor Cohen and Mona Scott-Young. Rapper Busta Rhymes capped his tribute to his longtime friend with a rap. “You were the light in a lot of lives,” Busta declared at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel. “It ain’t no coincidence that your last name was Lighty.” Russell Simmons credited Lighty with helping “create a cultural revolution” and rapper Q-Tip called him “an honorable man.” “He grew up to be in so many ways a true leader in our hip hop world,” rapper LL Cool J said. “We didn’t thank him enough. I know I didn’t.” Lighty’s 17-year-old daughter Tiffany sobbed through the ceremony. Her sister, Deja, said she wasn’t surprised by the turnout. “I know my dad was a popular guy,” the 16-year-old said. Lighty, 44, the founder and chief of Violator Management, killed himself last month after a heated argument with his estranged wife Veronica outside their Riverdale townhouse, police said. R.I.P. Devastating news keeps coming in from Louisiana and its surrounding counties down South. The aftermath of Hurricane Isaac hasn’t been on the news waves too much because of the distraction of Money Mitts RNC but there are millions of people in need tonight. With the remnants of Hurricane Isaac retreating from the Gulf Coast north, leaving massive devastation in their wake, piles of dead nutria–large semiacquatic rodents–have been spotted littering the shore in Waveland, Mississippi, on Friday. But perhaps one of the most striking images to have come out of the natural disaster was the sight of tombstones and caskets from an above-ground cemetery floating among the debris. Robin Roberts Leaves GMA To Prepare For Surgery via TMZ Robin Roberts will begin her medical leave from “Good Morning America” on Friday … so she can undergo bone marrow transplant surgery. Earlier this year, Roberts announced she was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) … a disease that attacks the blood and bone marrow. Roberts says her sister is the bone marrow donor … explaining, “[She] is a perfect match and she’s been spending a lot of time with me. She’s been taking shots to help her prepare.” Roberts says the procedure is scheduled for Tuesday … and says she plans to return to work following her recovery. “I know I’m going to have a job when I come back.” As TMZ previously reported, “GMA” is planning to use a roster of star-studded subs to fill in for Roberts during her absence. As fate would have it, O’Donnell — who announced her engagement in December — was also tied up on her intended wedding day: On August 14, she suffered a heart attack and received treatment in an Intensive Care Unit. “We married in private before her surgery just the two of us,” adds O’Donnell, who shares children Parker, Chelsea, Blake, and Vivienne with ex Kelli Carpenter. “They got married but they haven’t had the wedding celebration,” O’Donnell’s rep, Cindi Berger, confirmed to Us Weekly of the couple’s June 9 nuptials. Now that the couple are recovering from their respective health crises, O’Donnell says they intend to hold a larger wedding ceremony so that their friends and family members can share in their joy. “When we are both well enough, [we] will have the wedding of our dreams surrounded by those we cherish,” the comic and former View cohost blogged. “[We are] thankful for the love and support so many have given us during these trying times.” Together since September 2011, O’Donnell and Rounds anticipate holding their ceremony in summer 2013.
