‘I’m so worried about how we’re going to vote for Best Kiss,’ Patrick Carney jokes to MTV News before tonight’s performance. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Jim Cantiello Black Keys Photo: MTV News UNIVERSAL CITY, California — The Black Keys will put “Gold on the Ceiling” when they take the stage at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards tonight. So what should fans of the Ohio rockers expect when they storm the show? “Well, without spoiling it,” Dan Auerbach teased MTV News during rehearsals at the Gibson Amphitheatre in L.A. But, unfortunately for fans, MTV News had to censor his answer so we wouldn’t ruin the big surprise. In addition to performing, the guys will also get to chill out with some of the biggest stars on the planet, a concept Patrick Carney said really puts him at ease. “We feel really comfortable in these environments,” he joked. “You might not know this, but we were child stars.” While the performance should make some headlines, so will whichever lucky couple nabs the highly coveted Best Kiss prize. When asked if they would be voting for Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson’s smooch in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” the guys didn’t yet know which make-out session deserved their vote. “I’m so worried about how we’re going to vote for Best Kiss,” Carney teased. To see what the guys weren’t allowed to tell you, you’ll have to tune in to the big show tonight, which will also feature performances from Fun. , Martin Solveig and Wiz Khalifa . Sunday’s host sets his sights on Sheen’s seating card in new Twitpic. By Josh Wigler Russell Brand and Charlie Sheen’s seat card Photo: Russell Brand via Twitter UNIVERSAL CITY, California — The world is Russell Brand’s oyster. Well, perhaps not the world, but certainly the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City — that’s the site of the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , which Brand will lord over and command with his own unique (wait for it) brand of comedy on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET. “MTV Movie Awards incorporates two of my favorite things. Movies and Awards. If somehow group sex could be involved it would be the greatest night of my life,” Russell Brand said when he was first announced for the hosting gig. Well, it looks like he’s doing his best to fulfill that wish — from the looks of it, he could be well on his way toward an encounter with some goddesses. Brand, already knee-deep in preparation for the big night (even if former host Andy Samberg doesn’t think he’ll need to do much prep work ), has been spending time on the Movie Awards stage this week, and he’s set his sights on a particular celebrity’s seat: none other than the party god himself, Charlie Sheen . “MTV Awards tomorrow. Got my seat sorted. Winning/wanking,” he wrote on Twitter , accompanied by a photo of him sitting down and holding Sheen’s seat card . We’ve long held a theory that tiger blood is transferable simply by physical contact with any possession belonging to Mr. Sheen. If that truly is the case, Brand is officially walking on Sheen’s winning path. We appreciate the effort, Russell, but don’t you think you’d have better luck on that Group Sex Awards goal by actually attending one of Sheen’s never-ending parties? Just a suggestion, take it or leave it! Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET. So, in recognition of his achievements — and all that classic cool — Depp will be honored with the MTV Generation award at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, broadcasting live on Sunday, June 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. ‘Things change so much from week to week,’ the author tells MTV News of returning to the vampire franchise in the future. By Fallon Prinzivalli, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Stephenie Meyer Photo: MTV News The final installment of Stephenie Meyer’s vampire saga, “Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” hits theaters this fall, showing newlywed Bella Cullen in all her red-eyed, ice-cold-skin glory. It’s been a long journey since “Twilight” released in 2008 and many fans are sad to say goodbye to their beloved franchise. But when the credits roll on November 16, it may not be the end of Edward and Bella’s story. When MTV News flew out to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to visit Meyer on the set of “The Host,” the author revealed she has a few more story lines in mind for the couple. “Things change so much from week to week, let alone year to year. I mean, there are other stories, obviously,” she said. “I have a really hard time putting down characters and so I know what would happen. It’s just a matter of, ‘Are we tired of vampires?’ I kind of feel like maybe we are as a general group.” Us, tired of vampires? Never! But Meyer did admit — even if we’re still up for more bloodsucking tales — she’s a little worn out on the creatures. “It might take some time to want to go back there. And of course, for me it’s easier ’cause I know exactly what happens so there’s not as much suspense and stress for myself.” Fans of the “Twilight” series may recall Meyer’s venture back to Forks when she wrote the first novel from Edward Cullen’s perspective, “Midnight Sun.” The story was leaked online, causing the writer to put its release on hold. For those of us who are itching to get our hands on a copy, we may have to wait a few years. “You know, I’m trying to stay away from the vampire stuff because I do think if I can focus on other things, I’ll recharge a little bit there. I haven’t really looked at anything vampirish for a little while,” she said. “Someday, like on my deathbed or whatever, if I never get around to writing it, I’ll tell everyone what happens. I’ll just narrate for a little bit.” “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” is up for two MTV Movie Awards this year under the categories Best Kiss and Movie of the Year. Voting is still open, so make your voice heard! Then, this Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET you can catch the results on MTV, along with appearances by your favorite castmembers — including Kristen Stewart. Characters rule in the L.A. leg, with Marshea Kidd and Cole Horibe especially impressing the judges. By Natasha Chandel Cole Horibe on “So You Think You Can Dance?” Photo: FOX “So You Think You Can Dance” returned with its third round of auditions, landing smack in the middle of LaLa Land. Characters ruled in the Los Angeles leg of the competition, in an episode reminiscent of a Hollywood blockbuster. Guest judge Jesse Tyler Ferguson of “Modern Family” joined judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy in narrowing down the dancing field. While hip-hop, animation and exorcism ruled in the season premiere of “SYTYCD,” the second episode was saturated with contemporary routines full of sensuality, sadness and … martial arts? It was the dancers’ unique personalities that brought their talents to life. Starlet The heroine came early but left a serious mark with the judges. Eliana Girard, a trained dancer, circus performer and pole dancer, wowed the judges with her mile-long legs and emotional connection to the dance. Murphy said Girard was “Definitely top 20 material,” while Lythgoe commented, “You are one of the best girls this year.” Girard received a standing ovation and a sweet golden ticket to Vegas. Comic Relief Jontel “Johnny Waacks” Gibson — need we say more? “I think I was born in the wrong era,” Gibson said of himself in his intro package as he donned a bright ’70s-inspired outfit to go with his revival of the dance style “waacking.” More than his dance, Gibson had the judges splitting with laughter as they made reference after reference to the sexual innuendo behind the word “waacking.” The waacking routine was not the first in the show’s history, and Gibson did not make it through to Vegas after falling flat in the choreography round. Stunt Doubles Hilarity ensued upon the arrival of twin brothers Nick and James Aragon, a.k.a. the “Ninja Twins.” The athletes-turned-dancers entertained to the max with their twin jibber jabber — finishing each other’s sentences, speaking simultaneously and ribbing one another about who was the “best.” After their joint performance, Lythgoe exclaimed, “You have made this show for me, right now.” Unfortunately, the eccentric siblings were two years too old for the 30-year eligibility cutoff required and could not make it through but were praised for their talents and told to get a reality show. Victim Every story has a victim, and in this episode, it was 18-year-old Sam Lenarz. After multiple disagreements with her mother, the teenager was thrown out of her home and taken in by her best friend’s family. The pain of the ordeal was evident in her performance. Jesse Tyler Ferguson pointed out that her routine was laden with “simmering sadness, in a beautiful way.” Things turned up for Lenarz after she was granted a go-ahead to move on in the competition. Action Hero Cole Horibe proved to be more than a pretty face, as most action heroes do, with a martial-arts-infused dance that showed off his inhuman strength and control. Performing with extreme precision, the judges called Horibe’s legs “lethal” and without blinking offered him a ticket to Vegas. The decision was easier after Horibe jokingly threatened to come after the judges if they didn’t. Villain What story would be complete without a villain? OK, a reformed villain, to be precise. And Wednesday night’s came in the form of Jonathan Anzalone, a former contestant from season four who returned to humble himself after his first audition debacle on the show. Anzalone was criticized for his arrogance and returned to prove to the judges and the world that he had matured and respected their decisions. Their final decision: good, but not good enough. Anzalone was not allowed to move on. Scene-Stealer The real scene-stealer of the night, though, was Marshea Kidd. The 22-year old had auditioned unsuccessfully in seasons past but returned with a whole new take on dance and life. Kidd had survived a horrific car accident just six weeks prior, pronounced dead on arrival to the hospital. His “SYTYCD” audition was his first time onstage after breaking his neck and coming out of a coma. Kidd’s beautiful performance illuminated the stage and his new zest for life was felt by all in the room. Speechless, the judges merely waved a golden ticket in front of Kidd and reduced him and his family to tears. The dancers in Los Angeles more than lived up to the judges’ expectations and took the show further with their diverse characters. “So You Think You Can Dance” returns next week in the Dirty South. ‘It’s an opportunity to have a performance that will be talked about forever,’ band says of taking the Movie Awards stage on June 3. By James Montgomery Nate Ruess of fun. Photo: Getty Images Given that Fun. are the first musical act announced for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards , you’d think they’d be privy to all sorts of insider info on the big show, like potential hosts, nominees, etc. But, you’d be wrong. Turns out, they’re just as much in the dark as the rest of us. “We haven’t heard anything. Who’s going to be there?” frontman Andrew Ruess laughed. “Jackie Chan? Jon Bon Jovi? They better be there, for sure.” Sadly, we can’t vouch for either gentleman’s availability on June 3, when the Movie Awards air live from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California. But we can tell you that the guys in Fun. are planning on making the most of their time on stage, by going big with their performance of chart-topping smash “We Are Young.” “It’s one of the most flattering things that’s happened to us on this rollercoaster ride of this song and this album, because I just remember watching all those award shows — like the Video Music Awards and Movie Awards — and you always wonder like how they’re doing it, what their big reveal is going to be, all those other type of things,” Ruess said. “We’ve had meetings about how our set’s going to be and what it’s going to look like, and it’s so exciting. It’s so exciting how much effort MTV puts into this show, like, we have to show up and play the song, but they build this whole entire world around us, and it’s so amazing.” “It’s also an opportunity to have a performance that will be talked about forever,” guitarist Jack Antonoff added. “Like, I still talk about [the 2000 VMAs], when Eminem had the thousand people dressed like him, or when Smashing Pumpkins did ‘Tonight, Tonight’ [at the ’96 VMAs] … these are moments that, for us, growing up, last forever, and if we could pull off something like that, it would be amazing.” And as if being tapped to perform at the 2012 Movie Awards wasn’t already a big enough deal for the band, there’s also the fact that they’ve got previous MTV awards-show experience … though, to be fair, this will be the first time they’ve actually been invited to attend. “I went to the Video Music Awards when I was 14. My friend from camp had a friend who had a dad who was involved, and we sat near Rebecca Lobo and the Spice Girls,” Antonoff said. “It was the year that Fiona Apple gave the big speech, which, in hindsight, was pretty inspiring. My mind was blown, and I thought ‘This is just filled with famous people, and somehow I’m in the middle of it.’ So, to be able to go back to an MTV awards show — not through a friend of a friend who has a dad who works at Viacom — but to actually be invited, is an honor.” The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California.
Mel Gibson was secretly recorded ranting against Joe Eszterhas over the latter’s draft of their ill-fated film project The Maccabees , and the audio has leaked online. Screenwriter Eszterhas, who recently alleged in a nine-page letter that Mel Gibson hates Jews and wants to stab Oksana Grigorieva , says his son taped Mel. Eszterhas’ family was in Costa Rica at Mel’s house in December. He was tasked writing a first draft of The Maccabees , which didn’t go over well with Gibson. That’s putting it mildly: Mel Gibson Rant (at Joe Eszterhas) Eszterhas’ 15-year-old son, Nick, recorded the Oscar winner with his iPhone, and he was “adamant” his dad release it to the media. So he did, to The Wrap. “Why don’t I have a first draft of The Maccabees? What the f–k have you been doing?” Gibson can be heard yelling in the two-and-a-half-minute tape. Gibson also can be heard yelling, presumably referencing Oksana, that “I am earning money for a filthy little c–ksucker who takes advantage of me!” It’s worth noting that while he scarily rants like a bona fide crazy person, the most inflammatory comments Mel is accused of making do not appear. It’s unclear if there are additional audio recordings. Eszterhas has accused the actor of anti-Semitism and said his only true intention with making The Maccabees was “to convert Jews to Christianity.” In a letter to Gibson, Eszterhas (who is Jewish) claimed he continually referred to Jews in front of him as “Hebes,” “oven-dodgers” and “Jewboys.” He also claims that Mel called the Holocaust “mostly a lot of horses–t” and made horrific comments about Grigorieva, John Lennon and others. Gibson’s initial response to Eszterhas denied the claims that he made the offensive remarks he was accused of making, calling them “utter fabrications.” A rep for the actor-filmmaker tells E! that there will be no comment forthcoming on Eszterhas’ recording, and that Gibson has “nothing more” to say. As for The Maccabees , Warner Bros. previously said that they are still “analyzing what to do with the project” that has been shelved indefinitely. Gibson’s infamous rants against Oksana were one of the biggest stories of 2010, and it looks like he still has a good amount of pent-up anger.
Wednesday night in Austin, Texas the embattled (but cheery) Mel Gibson popped down to the Alamo Drafthouse to premiere his latest film/star vehicle, the darkly comic Mexico-set action pic Get the Gringo . Though his most recent and public feud with Maccabee screenwriter Joe Eszterhas took a notoriously ugly turn of late, Gibson was jovial and in a joking mood – even when moderator Harry Knowles dared to make reference to Gibson’s documented anti-Semitic remarks. The film, co-written by Gibson, director Adrian Grunberg, and producer Stacy Perskie over the course of a year and a half (from an idea by Gibson), follows an American career criminal known as Driver (Gibson) as he flees American authorities and makes a break for the U.S. –Mexico border with millions in stolen cash. Thrown into a Mexican prison modeled on a real life “pueblito” – an effective working city operating within the confines of a fortress run by gangsters and corrupt officials – Driver uses his unique set of skills and a newfound friendship with a street-smart 10-year-old (Kevin Hernandez) to survive and plot his way out. Gringo is an effective and at times strangely winning B-movie vehicle for Gibson, whose precise and hardened Driver doles out wisecracks and ruthlessness in equal measure, orchestrating the downfall of a network of interconnected baddies while redeeming himself through his friendship with his young sidekick and the kid’s comely mother. Squibs of blood fly fast and furious as shoot-outs, torture scenes, and an energetic opening car chase scene keep the action pulse quickening throughout; it’s the kind of movie in which Gibson dives sidelong through the air in slow motion in a gunfight and nails a bad guy through the eye with his superhuman shooting skills without getting so much as grazed by a bullet. In other words: It’s better than your average direct-to-DVD title and a fleeting return to the smart-ass Mel Gibson, movie star, that audiences fell for in films like Lethal Weapon . But are audiences ready yet to forgive the once-adored actor for his personal troubles and transgressions ? Gibson’s well-publicized meltdowns are likely partially to blame for Gringo ’s unusual release strategy; instead of a traditional theatrical release, the film will release via Direct TV on May 1. Which brings us to The Awkward Moment at the Gringo premiere when Gibson’s personal troubles came front and center. It was late in the post-premiere Q&A (which was streamed online and shown via satellite in participating theaters) when Knowles turned to director/co-writer Grunberg to address the elephant in the room. “I see that you’ve got a Star of David on,” began Knowles. “How was it — did y’all have any trouble working together or anything?” “I hate his guts,” Grunberg joked, before nodding off any suggestion of ill relations with Gibson. “I’ve known him for six, seven years.” Moments later, co-writer Perskie chimed in with an admission of his own: “I’m Jewish.” “Funny,” quipped Gibson, “you don’t look Jewish!” The attendees around me at the Los Angeles screening audibly gasped at Gibson’s joke, a less than successful attempt at levity. But just like that, the moment when the entire night could’ve bombed just simply passed. Knowles, his basic duty done, moved on to easier topics. What music did the Gringo gang listen to during filming? (“The music of the spheres,” was Gibson’s non-serious answer.) What about that Viking movie? (Oh, that .) So it seems that Gibson’s not quite tiptoeing around his past remarks. It’s business as usual, perhaps – why make a big deal of it? Whether or not that line of flippant joking in the general direction (if not near vicinity) of his most controversial comments to date should affect how film audiences see him is a matter of opinion. For now, mull it over and chew on six more revelations Gibson shared Wednesday night.
