So stated Barack Obama today in an address from Fort Myers, Florida, as he addressed the tragic Colorado shooting that took the lives of 12 people inside an Aurora movie theater.
The nominees for the 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this morning in Los Angeles, and as usual HBO blinded the Academy with boobage (and quality writing, acting and production values, but whatever), cleaning up with a stunning 81 nominations including 15 for their original movie Hemingway & Gellhorn , 12 for Boardwalk Empire , 11 for Game of Thrones , and 5 for Girls . My names Eesha and at 8:45am on the July 15, I met Justin Bieber after 3 years of waiting. The day before at around 2:00am, my friend and I put two and two together thanks to a wonderful source and found out that Justin was going to stop by Sydney on his way to Melbourne . We didn’t tweet it because our ‘source’ could of been in ALOT of trouble. On the day of, we woke up at 5:30am after 2 hours of sleeping and I got my mum to drive us to Sydney International Airport and we got there at 6:45. So far it was only me @kryptotina and @kiraajadex at the airport. We got breakfast and went back down to gate D where Justin’s flight was gonna land. After about 30 minutes of waiting, 3 more fans joined us and we went over to loading dock 6. This was the longest time of my life. We saw his flight arrive at 8:25 and we all cried. A black van drove into the driveway. We cried again. It was an emotional time okay. Then at around 8:45am, about 15 security guys walked out of the entrance and we are stood there in shock. That’s when we saw him. We tried to stay calm but that is impossible if JUSTIN FUCKING BIEBER is in front of you. I called out, “Hey Justin, come over please. There’s only 6 of us here.” He looked like he was about to walk into the car when he came and started walking towards us. I started to cry but my friend told me to calm down so I tried, but I couldn’t stop shaking. I was the first person to get a photo with Justin which was selfie style. I looked at it while Amy was getting her photo and told them that the sun was in the way. Justin moved her to a place where it would work. I got my 2nd photo next and while it was being taken, he rubbed my back. He must of felt I was shaking or something. Everyone else got their photos and then he walked back to the car. After his back was turned, I fell to the ground and cried as he was driving off. It was everything I wished for and more. I couldn’t stop crying and then we walked back into the airport. After we meet him, we’ve been contacted by channel 7 news, channel 9 news, hot hits and Sunrise. Without Justin, I have no idea what I would be like and I thank him for that. My name is Anjelica and this is my 4th Bieber experience. On June 19th, Justin was in NY doing promo for his new album. All week I wanted to go see him. I tried getting tickets to his signing, see him at Letterman and even get him at The View; nothing was working. My 19th birthday was in two days and I was determined to meet him. On June 20th my uncle called me and asked me if tomorrow on my birthday I had anything to do. I said no and he said well now you do, you’re going to meet Justin Bieber! I was freaking out, I couldnt believe it on my 19th birthday I was going to be able to meet him! Finally the day came and I was freaking out, I didnt know what I was going to say or what would happen. My uncle had friends at the radio station who knew it was my birthday and were more excited for me then I was. Finally we get upstairs to a room where 2 other girls were who one a contest to interview him! I was freaking out and my little cousin didn’t know what to do. Finally we got to watch him get interviewed and then it was time to meet him. I let my cousin go in front of me and Justin spoke to her for about 5 minutes. He was telling her he loved her shirt and she was so cute. Now it was my turn. I walked up to him and he hugged me so tight and said “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!” I couldn’t believe it. I told him I was so embarrassed to wear the pin but he said, “No dont be!” Our first picture turned out bad because he blinked and he told the guy to take another one! After that, he said “I hope your birthday was good!” I told him I loved his tattoo and he was telling me how much we all mean to him! My name is Brittany and I am a HUGE Justin Bieber fan. I found out Justin was coming into town for promo of Believe. I was so determined to meet him before he left. Since I couldn’t go to the famous Apollo Theatre in NYC for his free show, I found out he was doing David Letterman. I have been waiting about 2 years to meet Justin. I woke up at about 6:00 am to get ready for the city. When I got there I found out where I had to stand to see Justin come in for the taping. It was around 12:15 and a black van pulls up. Justin came out but didn’t come across the street to us at first. I was so upset, I thought he wouldnt stop when he came back out. My name is Camilla, I’m 15 and I live in Turin, Italy. Justin came in Milan, Italy to promote Believe on 2nd June 2012. Some of my friends won the contest to see him at the Believe Party at the Alcatraz Disco or at the Verona Arena, but I didn’t win anything unfortunately. I decided to go to Milan to try to meet him anyways. The morning of 2nd June, we went to the Alcatraz and some parents of our friend gave us the bracelet to enter at the Believe Party. Then we went to the Linate Airport and we didn’t see Justin but we saw ALL of Justin’s crew such as Ryan Good, Dan Kanter, Scrappy, Kenny, Alfredo and more. I gave a letter for Justin to Scrappy and we followed their cars until we found Justin’s hotel. We spoke a little with Scrappy (who pulled out of his pocket the letter I gave him and said ”I’ve still got it”) and Dan Kanter. There we saw Marisol (she works for Kiss Kiss Radio) and she had to interview Justin. She saw us and after the interview said, “Alessandra, Ilaria and Gaia come here.” She told my friends that they needed 3 girls to ask 3 questions to Justin on the stage at the Believe Party and obviously they said, “OF COURSE.” When we arrived to the party, Marisol accompanied us in the backstage area and a man told us to be quiet and not to cry or he would kick us out. When Justin arrived and started singing, I was completely absorbed. I couldn’t believe that minutes later I would meet the only person that I really cared about. When he finished singing a man told us again to keep calm and don’t freak out. I can’t remember much but I remember Marisol said, “Okay Justin we have the girls here” and we went on the stage. Justin was two steps from me and I was enchanted while I saw his smile when he hugged Gaia. After Ilaria hugged him, I threw my arms around his neck and I felt nothing, only joy. I was about to let him go but I cuddled him stronger and I heard him saying, “Ooooh” with his sweet voice. He was so friendly and sweet with us. We asked him to take a picture but there wasn’t much time so we took a group picture with him. You don’t know how important that guy is to me. He did a lot for us, he has created a big fantastic Belieber family. I’ll never stop thanking my friend Gaia, without her I probably wouldn’t of met Justin. Also to Arianna because she cried with me when we didn’t won anything. Alessandra, Francesca and Ilaria for supporting me and made the 2nd June the best day ever. It may seem like an unlikely pairing, the academic and author Douglas Brinkley teaming up with one of the world’s biggest movie stars to edit a little-known unpublished novel by the late folk singer/songwriter Woody Guthrie titled House of Earth . But that is in fact in the works. Johnny Depp is partnering with Brinkley whose writings eventually informed documentaries including Spike Lee’s Hurricane Katrina work When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts as well as the 2004 doc Going Upriver: The Long War of John Kerry . Brinkley stumbled upon the work, which Guthrie finished in 1947, while researching an article about Bob Dylan for Rolling Stone. Brinkley happened upon the manuscript and told the New York Times he did not know of its existence. He cited two biographies about the late folk singer, who would have turned 100 this coming Saturday (July 14th), but neither mention Guthrie’s manuscript, which he completed in 1947. The story revolves around a West Texas couple are confronted by banks and lumber companies as they work to build adobe homes as protection against harsh weather. Brinkley and Depp wrote an essay for the New York Times Book Review about Guthrie’s work, describing it as a “portrait” of life in the Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. Pitched somewhere between rural realism and proletarian protest, somewhat static in terms of narrative drive, “House of Earth” nonetheless offers a searing portrait of the Panhandle and its marginalized Great Depression residents. Guthrie successfully mixes Steinbeck’s narrative verve with D. H. Lawrence’s openness to erotic exploration… Guthrie was born in Oklahoma and eventually traveled with migrant workers to California during during the era and was frequently linked to left-wing groups at the time. His guitar often had the slogan “This Machine Kills Fascists.” Exactly how the Douglas Brinkley/Johnny Depp tie-in has been left vague, though one can’t help but think there is a possible movie in the works longterm. The two have known each other since the mid ’90s through Hunter S. Thompson. The two partnered in writing the liner notes on a soundtrack for Alex Gibney’s recent doc Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson .
