MTV News’ Amy Wilkinson tells ‘Twilight’ Tuesday that catchy songs, inside jokes make the off-Broadway parody work. By Kara Warner The cast of “Twilight: The Musical” Photo: Dreamcatcher Entertainment For the most dedicated “Twilight” fans, the yearlong wait between the theatrical releases of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” and “Breaking Dawn – Part 2” is painful, to say the least. Luckily, due to the popularity of the franchise and vampires in general, there are a variety of ways to bridge the gap, a few of which we touched on previously via fan suggestions . These include re-reading the books and re-watching the already-released movies, as well as getting your vampire fix via TV shows like “The Vampire Diaries” and “True Blood.” The latest addition to the fangtastic fray is the off-Broadway musical parody “Twilight: The Musical.” MTV News’ own Amy Wilkinson was lucky enough to attend the first preview in New York Monday. Thanks to her detailed summary, we now know more about the action in the plot, but for those who want to know more about the show’s potential and audience reactions, this week’s “Twilight” Tuesday is dedicated to digging a little deeper into the production by way of Wilkinson’s experience. This will help you know what to expect if you make the trek to New York to see the show when it officially opens. Here are five reasons you’ll enjoy “Twilight: The Musical.” It’s a Parody Although we take our “Twilight” very seriously, it’s sometimes just as entertaining to make light of the saga’s more melodramatic, overwrought elements. And when a parody is executed well, it can be a delightful companion piece to the source material. It also helps to manage your expectations accordingly. “To be completely honest, I wouldn’t say that they were incredibly high,” Wilkinson said of her expectations going in. “Mostly because this is an off-Broadway production, and from what we were told when we first arrived, they’d only been practicing for about 24 hours. So I didn’t have the highest expectations going in, but I think for the time they had it turned out really well.” The “Twilight”/ “Harry Potter” Blend Yes, Harry, Ron and Hermione make an appearance in “Twilight: The Musical,” and despite the seemingly obvious appeal to two obsessive and proud fanbases, Wilkinson reported that it’s more entertaining than off-putting. “The way it was used worked well. There might be something that is a bit cloying about it, marrying these two franchises whose fans never seem to get along very well, so it might be a bit baiting in that regard, but I think the way they did it made sense,” she said. “They traded in the three villains in the original ‘Twilight’ for three ‘Harry Potter’ characters and there were some good jokes that came out of it.” Vampires and Wizards That Sing! This is a musical after all, so we are happy to hear that the songs, while campy at times, don’t suck. Wilkinson said that one in particular is likely to get stuck in your head, a catchy little ditty called “Die Bella Die.” Apparently and appropriately, it’s Hermione’s villainous theme song. The Inside Jokes In addition to dialogue lifted straight from Melissa Rosenberg’s screenplays, the production pokes fun at a few memorable and slightly maligned moments, one of which Wilkinson said stood out for its laugh-out-loud factor. “The one moment that the entire audience busted a gut over was in reference to a scene from the first ‘Twilight’ movie, when they’re going on the biology class field trip and Alice Cullen is asking Bella if she’s going to ride on their bus. In the movie Robert Pattinson’s Edward is kind of like, ‘Oh no, she’s not,’ but in the production I saw, Colin Hanlon, the guy playing Edward, turned around and yelled as loud as he could, ‘SHE’S NOT COMING!’ I don’t know what it was about that, but the entire audience nearly died. The actor himself was cracking up, everyone was cracking up because it rings true to how bizarre that moment is in the film.” A Few Stars Are Born In the spirit of how far “Glee” star Darren Criss has come from his “A Very Potter Musical” days, there are several actors in this musical worth keeping an eye on due to their breakout star potential, like Jenna Leigh Green, Lauren Lopez and Jeffry Denman, who all play multiple roles in the production. “[Green] is pretty much the MVP of the production,” Wilkinson said. “She does four or five characters (including Hermione, Rosalie and Esme), and there are times when her characters almost have lines back-to-back and she’s running behind the stage to take off a wig or throwing off her cloak to return to the stage and deliver a line. She’s definitely one of the hardest-working people on the stage. She was great to watch.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
‘We’re just actually really grateful that ‘Glee’ has opened the door,’ former American Idol says of her upcoming musical series. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Katharine McPhee at the Golden Globes on Sunday Photo: Jeff Vespa/ WireImage During the Golden Globes on Sunday night (January 15), there was one promo that played nearly on a loop. The commercial for NBC’s new music-themed prime-time drama, “Smash,” seemed to play almost as much as the show itself, which featured funny barbs from host Ricky Gervais , an equally funny response from Golden Globe-winner Madonna and a big win for “The Descendants,” which took home Best Motion Picture – Drama . Before the Golden Globes kicked off, MTV News caught up with “Smash” leading lady and former American Idol Katharine McPhee on the red carpet. She happily explained how there’s really no competition between her forthcoming show and that other singing show on Fox, “Glee.” “You know, we’re so secluded from L.A., where they’re shooting ‘Glee,’ and we haven’t had any interaction. No one’s had any sort of conversations. We’re just actually really grateful that ‘Glee’ has opened the door,” she said. “And has made music work on television.” In teases for the show, McPhee is seen covering Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful,” and when we caught up with her, she told us that later on in the season there will be a Rihanna cover. McPhee even went on to share what famed actors and singers will also appear on the highly anticipated show. “Well, we have Uma Thurman, who’s not a pop star but a movie star. She’s actually shooting with us already,” she said. “[One Republic frontman] Ryan Tedder is a guest star. So he’s a pop star and an amazing writer. Oh god, and Nick Jonas . We’re doing pretty good for the first season.” “Smash,” also starring Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston and produced by Steven Spielberg, premieres February 6. The show follows the behind-the-scenes staging of a Broadway show about Marilyn Monroe, who is certainly in the zeitgeist nowadays as Michelle Williams just nabbed a Golden Globe for her portrayal of the Hollywood icon in “My Week With Marilyn.” Stick with MTV News all night for the 2012 Golden Globes winners, and don’t miss all the fashion from the Golden Globes red carpet ! Harry Potter star (or, as Saturday Night Live ‘s Jason Sudeikis dubs him below, “Sex Wizard”) Daniel Radcliffe will step up to host SNL this Saturday, so to prepare for the big night he and Sudeikis shot a promo video teasing the hilarity to come. “Are you doing a character? Like a chimney sweep?” Sudeikis asks upon hearing Radcliffe speak. “Can you do an American accent?” With a resounding “Chill, broseph,” Radcliffe shows that yes, he totes can. Watch the erstwhile Harry Potter speak bro and wax poetic about Mountain Dew after the jump. I’m inclined to be optimistic that SNL first-timer Radcliffe can pull off the gig, probably playing straight man to Sudeikis and Co. like many a guest host from the world of dramatic acting. Will it top Charles Barkley’s ratings grabber from last weekend? Probably not — that is, unless Radcliffe heeds Sudeikis’s words of wisdom and dances like nobody’s watching. Which raises the question: Is there room for yet another track-suited white boy back-up dancer on What Up With That? [ THR ]
If horror movies have taught us anything, it’s that you can lead teenagers to a big red sign that reads “DON’T GO IN THE WOODS,” but you can’t make them not go in the woods anyway. Actor Vincent D’Onofrio nods to this and other slasher clichés in Don’t Go in the Woods , his feature directing debut — that is, when he’s not nodding to clichés native to the musical and the old “star is born” storyline. All that nodding gives a new definition to the term “genre-friendly,” and if a film could get by on its cheap and cheerful vibe alone, this one certainly would. Unfortunately, outside of the proxy satisfaction it will give those who are dying to see the grim reaper let loose on the set of a very special episode of Glee , the pleasures of Don’t Go in the Woods can’t quite compensate for its straggly bits. Casting five unknown musicians to play the band at the center of the film was logical enough: Slasher actors are not known for their Juilliard pedigrees, so prioritizing their musical skill makes sense. The story has the band decamping into the woods to try and write that elusive hit record without the usual distractions (D’Onofrio’s pointed removal of one of them, the cell phone, seems to channel the modern horror director’s frustration with those little plot spoilers). And the songs they do come up with are tuneful in a strangled yet twinkly, Fleet Foxes kind of way. Musician and director Sam Bisbee (who took home a 2010 Oscar for The New Tenant , a short film he worked on with D’Onofrio) wrote all of the music, and the boys’ performances are high points, in part because if they’re singing it means no one on-screen is attempting to act. Well, no one but the psychotically focused group leader Nick (Matt Sbeglia). Nick has disproportionately big blue eyes and a hipster cloche of dark hair, and during his numbers he usually strays from the campfire to emote in private. Nick rides the rest of the guys — played by Casey Smith, Soomin Lee, Nick Thorpe and Jorgen Jorgensen — like they’re pack mules, and at least one reason why they might put up with it emerges. Their camping spot is the same one Nick used to visit with a now-deceased brother (actually, it was shot on D’Onofrio’s Woodstock, N.Y., property), though presumably the forest’s resident Sledgehammer Guy was not a problem back in those less gruesome times. Did I mention Sledgehammer Guy? Oh, he’s around. He just makes noises that everyone shrugs off for a while, but when the band’s groupie crew shows up to join the party (and make Nick popping mad, naturally), Sledgehammer Guy gets cracking. The kill sequences are quick and not very scary — more like pulling weeds than serial murder — and though some of the ladies get to warble out a few evocatively shot bars before they’re beaned to death, most of the jam sessions are directed like stand-alone videos. A story about the clash of creative and destructive drives set in the wilderness and starring a bunch of scruffy but ambitious kids has big themes and genre toys to play with. Though obviously aware of the potential and prepared to really go for it, D’Onofrio came up with something that feels unfinished — an interesting harmony that needs a better bridge. Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Robert Pattinson also took home awards. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato at the 2012 People’s Choice Awards Photo: Getty Images With a touch of sass and Neil Patrick Harris, “The Big Bang Theory” star Kaley Cuoco opened the 2012 People’s Choice Awards and set the tone for a night of good times when the show went live from Los Angeles on Wednesday night (January 11), kicking off what is sure to be an action-packed awards season. The night was a mixed bag of awards for TV, music and movies, with Emma Stone, Demi Lovato and “Castle” as the big headlines of the night. The guys of “The Grey” kicked off the night by handing out the award for Favorite Movie Actress to Emma Stone, who also won Favorite Comedic Actress. “You will literally make me cry,” Stone told the room. “I moved to L.A. eight years ago this week. And it is so insane to be standing up here right now.” Favorite TV Comedy Actress went to “Glee” star Lea Michele, who beat out the night’s host. She dedicated her award to “my amazing cast, my glee club. All of you are my best friends. You guys are the best. And Ryan Murphy for bringing so many of my dreams and making them come true. This is for my fans, and ‘Glee’ would be nothing without you guys.” “The Hunger Games” stars Liam Hemsworth and Jennifer Lawrence handed the award for Favorite TV Drama Actress to “Vampire Diaries” star Nina Dobrev, who seemed grateful to her fans for helping her win an award she wasn’t originally nominated for. “Wow guys, this is so great. You guys wrote and wrote and continued to write in that they cave in and gave me a nomination that I won!” she said in her lacy emerald green dress. Josh Hutcherson and Vanessa Hudgens welcomed Favorite Pop Artist winner Demi Lovato to the stage. Adam Sandler displayed his signature and vintage charm in his acceptance speech for Favorite Comedic Movie Actor, thanking his teachers for helping him make his frequently critically panned box-offices smashes. Cory Monteith and Julianne Hough shared some banter before they handed Chloe Moretz the Favorite Movie Star Under 25 prize. “I can’t even imagine that I’m in the same category as the whole ‘Harry Potter’ cast and I won,” the 14-year-old said before thanking her fans. Robert Pattinson accepted the award for Best Drama Movie for the sweeping and romantic “Water For Elephants.” “Thank you very much,” Pattinson said. “When I was doing this movie, I had so much fun doing it.” “Once Upon A Time” leading ladies Ginnifer Goodwin and Jennifer Morrison gave the Favorite TV Drama Actor trophy to “Castle” star Nathan Fillion. The show also won for Best TV Crime Drama. “Vampire Diaries” hotties Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley showed their funny side when they presented “Bridesmaids” with the award for Favorite Comedy Movie. “We’d like to thank everyone who voted for ‘Bridesmaids.’ We’d especially like to thank Kristen Wiig,” Producer Judd Apatow said with the female-driven cast behind him, who then launched into a rendition of Wilson Phillips’ classic “Hold On.” “Haywire” star Ewan McGregor had the distinction of handing out the Favorite Movie Icon prize to Morgan Freeman. “When I found out I had been nominated… I decided to look up icon so here’s what I found,” Freeman said, going on to joke about the many definitions of the word, before he said he was “forever grateful for this honor.” “How I Met Your Mother” were the last to take the stage home when the cast accepted the award for Favorite Network TV Comedy. By the end of the night, stars ranging from Rihanna (Favorite R&B Artist) to the cast of “2 Broke Girls” to Lady Gaga (for her album Born This Way ) had nabbed a Waterford Crystal trophy.
