Bad News, Julia Roberts: Mirror, Mirror’s Online Praise Might Be Studio-Generated

Last week, you and I watched the first trailer for Tarsem Singh’s Mirror, Mirror in slack-jawed horror. (After all, aren’t Snow White adaptations supposed to be about the titular princess and not Julia Roberts’s aging concerns, Bollywood dance numbers and Armie Hammer’s impression of a dog?) Surprisingly though, not all of the Internet’s feedback was negative. A few brave souls commented on the Relativity trailer enthusiastically — and now MovieMavericks.com is claiming that some of those suspicious thumbs-up reviews came from the same source.

REVIEW: Buck Paints a Stirring Portrait of the Real-Life Horse Whisperer

The formidable subject of Buck shares his initials and ideals with another, even more imposing romantic hero. Black Beauty, a horse with a human range of intellect and emotion, is the title character and narrator of Anna Sewell’s 1877 novel. His life story is marked by hardship and hard work, all of it at the mercy of morally variable owners. Sewell wanted her readers in horse-dependent 19th-century England to see their mounts, carriage-pullers, and field-plowers not as insensible beasts but creatures worthy of respect and compassion. Buck Brannaman, a Wyoming horse trainer with a resume that includes inspiring the Nicholas Evans novel that became Robert Redford’s 1998 movie The Horse Whisperer , is the 21st-century embodiment of that same cause.

On His 40th Birthday, A Remembrance of Tupac Shakur’s Film Career

If not for his untimely death at the age of 25, Tupac Shakur would have turned 40 today. The West Coast rapper had already reached legendary status in the hip-hop world before his tragic ( and still unsolved ) murder in 1996 after just five living years in the game, during which time he’d released five studio albums and established himself as one of the most fascinatingly enigmatic, troubled, and complex figures of his generation. But he’d also demonstrated talent and depth in six feature film roles. On his 40th birthday, revisit his brief but memorable film work.

Glenn Close Responds To ‘Offensive’ Navy Video

Oscar winner is furious over unwittingly appearing in a racy video produced by now-suspended U.S. Navy captain. By Eric Ditzian Glenn Close in the video by Captain Owen Honors Photo: The Virginian Pilot Five-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close has struck back against her unauthorized appearance in a series of sexually-charged videos shown aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. The videos feature skits filled with homophobic slurs, simulated sexual acts and a clip of two women appearing to shower together. Close appears in a brief shot that comes directly after a scene showing two men in bed together with condoms and lubrication on a bedside table. “The cynical, unauthorized use of my image in this video is deeply offensive and insulting, and was the result of a seemingly innocent request made during a visit to an aircraft carrier over four years ago,” Close said in a statement . The videos were distributed in 2006 and 2007 aboard the ship’s closed-circuit television system but recently became public. Navy Capt. Owen Honors, who produced the videos and figures prominently in them, was subsequently relieved of his duty as commander of the Enterprise after an investigation. A Navy spokesman has called the videos “inappropriate” and made clear that “the Navy does not endorse or condone these kinds of actions.” In Close’s video clip, the actress appears during a montage set to Chicago’s “You’re the Inspiration.” Following the appearance of the two men in bed, the actress is seen sitting at a desk and spinning around to reveal herself wearing a USS Enterprise cap and holding a multicolored stuffed parrot. She appears to be speaking, but her voice is obscured by the music. “I am distraught that my image has been used to perpetuate something that I abhor,” Close said in the statement.
