‘Tron Legacy’ Director Says He Likes To Challenge The Audience

Joseph Kosinski tells MTV News, ‘There’s some stuff in this film that people maybe aren’t expecting.’ By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Joseph Kosinski Photo: MTV News For those “Tron” fans who’ve been waiting patiently for the release of “Tron Legacy” — a semi-sequel more than 20 years in the making — the day has arrived! Starting Friday (December 17), Jeff Bridges (playing two roles, no less) can now be seen in theaters nationwide. Given the original film’s storied and groundbreaking history, MTV News asked first-time director Joseph Kosinski what reactions he hopes “Legacy” viewers will have. “Hopefully, people will have the same reaction I did when I saw the first ‘Tron,’ ” Kosinski said. “It looked different than anything else out there; it sounded different than anything else out there; it was bold in its concept and in the technology, the way it pushed technology,” he recalled. “So hopefully, audiences feel the same way about this film, because that’s what we tried to do.” Speaking of pushing the boundaries of technology and sound, “Legacy” is more than just your average popcorn flick. There are thematic elements that demand the audience’s attention in ways different from other films. Kosinski said that was one of his goals in continuing the story. “I can only make the film that I would want to see. I like films that challenge the audience,” he explained. “I like films that require you to pay attention, and there’s some stuff in this film that people maybe aren’t expecting, which to me are the most exciting parts.” For the astute viewer — or fans of films like “Blade Runner,” “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “Star Wars” — a few of those exciting parts might feel just a bit familiar. “I was a child of the ’80s, so those are obviously films that made huge impressions on me,” Kosinski said. “I think every director is a combination, can cite influences from all the films, especially films you see as a kid, for whatever reason, those are the ones that impact you the strongest,” he added. “I think there are bits of all of those in here.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Tron Legacy.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Katy Perry Sets Off ‘Firework’ At AMAs

Singer sparkles during-high energy American Music Awards set on Sunday. By James Dinh Katy Perry performs at the American Music Awards on Sunday Photo: Kevin Winter/AMA2010/Getty Images/DCP Katy Perry has already revealed her inspiration for her latest single, “Firework.” But the pop star took the track a step further during a high-energy performance that included sparklers at the American Music Awards on Sunday (November 21). As the number began, a children’s choir crooned the chorus of the empowering tune. It was Perry, however, who really made an entrance, descending from a star suspended from the ceiling. Dressed in a furry red dress (one she later ripped off to reveal another ensemble), the “Teenage Dream” singer walked to the front of the stage as the choir dispersed and backup dancers joined her onstage. Meanwhile, backdrop screens showed a slew of fireworks as Perry’s dancers shot sparklers through hand-held gadgets. The pop star ended the visual light-fest on a high note, singing the last few notes of “Firework” while her dancers lifted her high up in the air. Perry is also nominated in multiple AMA categories , including Favorite Female Artist, Favorite Album and Artist of the Year. The newly married Mrs. Brand teased the performance via Twitter a few days ago, writing, “Just finished AMA rehearsal… I am so excited about this remix performance. It’s going to be a mixture of adorable & gorgeous. #AMA’S.” Perry spoke to MTV News about writing the inspirational track, her third single from Teenage Dream. “I think that’s why I wrote it, is because I really believe in people and I believe that people have a spark to be a firework,” she said. “It’s just up to them, and a lot of times it’s only us that’s standing in the way of reaching our goals, fulfilling our destinies, being the best version of who we possibly can be, so that’s why I wrote it.” What did you think of Katy’s sparkling performance? Newsweek Poll: Republicans Think Obama ‘Probably’ Wants To Impose Islamic Law

The majority of Republicans suspect that President Obama wants to impose Islamic law, also known as Sharia, throughout the world, according to a new national poll from Newsweek. But even as they say this, a lot of them aren't completely sure. The poll asked: “Some people have alleged that Barack Obama sympathizes with the goals of Islamic fundamentalists who want to impose Islamic law around the world. From what you know about Obama, what is your opinion of these allegations?” The top-line result was definitely true 7%, probably true 24%, probably not true 36%, and definitely not true 25%. Among Republicans, however, it was definitely true 14%, probably true 38%, probably not true 33%, and definitely not true 7%. Another question asked: “Thinking about Barack Obama and what he has said about issues like the proposal to build an Islamic cultural center and mosque a few blocks from the World Trade Center site in New York City… Do you think Obama favors the interests of Muslim Americans over other groups of Americans, or do you think he has generally been even-handed?” The top-line result: favoring Muslims 30%, he has been even-handed 60%. Republicans said that Obama favors Muslims by 59, Democrats said he has been even-handed by 82, and independents pretty much matched the top-line, saying he has been even-handed by 62. It's interesting to note not only that a majority of Republicans believe Obama wants to impose Islamic law, but that a large portion of those respondents would only say it that such a severe accusation was “probably” true. At a certain point, when it comes to questions like birtherism, Islam or any number of other outlandish accusations, you get the feeling that a lot of Republican respondents simply like to give the somewhat negative response about Obama just out of spite rather than serious belief. added by: TimALoftis

Hayley Williams Channels Viral Video Star Antoine Dodson On ‘Bed Intruder’

Paramore singer collaborates with New Found Glory and Relient K members for ‘punk rock cover’ of the YouTube hit. By James Montgomery Hayley Williams Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images Thanks a rather impassioned speech about an attempted rape in his neighborhood, Huntsville, Alabama resident Antoine Dodson has become an unwitting YouTube sensation over the past month. Footage of Dodson’s tirade, which appeared on a local newscast, has racked up millions of views, inspired a slew of remixes (one of which even cracked the Billboard Hot 100) and earned him a rather fervent fanbase … which, apparently, includes Paramore’s Hayley Williams. On Wednesday (August 25) night, a “punk-rock cover” of Dodson’s speech — featuring Williams on vocals, with assists from New Found Glory’s Jordan Pundik and Relient K’s Ethan Luck — was uploaded to YouTube . The song opens with Williams quoting Dodson’s notorious “rapist in Lincoln Park” line; she also tackles a verse later in the song. She recorded her vocals at Luck’s house in Nashville Wednesday night on a whim (“Over at @EthanLuck’s house, recording something groundbreaking,” she tweeted , later adding, “Just dropped by … to sing a couple lines for it. Too much fun.”). In keeping with that spirit, the entire project is a rather tongue-in-cheek take on both Dodson and punk rock in general, featuring over-the-top fretwork, chugging chords and a whole lot of intertwining gang vocals. Williams did not respond to MTV News’ emails about the song, but Luck described the inspiration for the tune, the recording process and his goals for the song on his official site . “With all this hype of Antoine Dodson around the Internet, a couple friends of mine and I thought it would be fun to do our own version of ‘Bed Intruder,’ ” he wrote. “Everything was recorded at my home studio while New Found Glory had a day off from tour here in Nashville. Hayley came over this evening to add the finishing touches. I hope you all enjoy it as much as we do … It was so much fun! Maybe The Gregory Brothers, who originally [remixed the speech], will get to hear our version! Or better yet, Antoine Dodson himself!” Dare to dream, dude. Related Artists Paramore

In This Article, I Show How Easy It Is For Peaceful People to Violate the Patriot Act and Face 15 Years in Prison

The court handed down its decision in a case brought by the Humanitarian Law Project, an NGO that sought to advise the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) — which the U.S. considers a terrorist organization — on filing human rights complaints with the United Nations and conducting peace negotiations with the Turkish government. In its 6-3 decision, the supremes ruled that the statute didn’t trample the organization’s members’ rights to free speech and free assembly as long as they had no direct contact with the PKK. Ironically, in theory that means members of the Humanitarian Law Project can publicly urge the PKK to carry out deadly acts of terrorism without running afoul of the law, but they can’t work with the group in an effort to stop the violence. The decision casts the court’s rightward balance in sharp relief. Just months ago, the same court ruled in the Citizens United case that the government doesn’t have a sufficiently compelling interest in limiting political campaign dollars to infringe on the free speech rights of corporations — “artificial persons.” But the court, dismissing the admonition that those who would give up essential liberties for some temporary security deserve neither, was quick to accept the Justice Department’s claim that fighting terrorism trumps the rights of the Humanitarian Law Project. Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John Roberts cited the Federalist Papers, which held that “security against foreign danger” is an “avowed and essential object” of the U.S. government. Opening the Door for (More) Political Prosecutions Arguably, the most fundamental flaw in the statute is that there is no apolitical and universally accepted definition of “terrorism.” The United Nations has wrangled with the issue for years, and the major obstacle is simple to understand: everyone wants to define it as political violence in furtherance of a goal with which they disagree. By criminalizing even a tenuous association with groups the U.S. government lists as terrorist organizations, the statute opens the door to prosecuting people for taking unpopular sides in remote conflicts. Sometimes, however, history proves those people were on the “right” side. Perhaps the most obvious example is the African National Congress (ANC), which the United States designated as a terrorist organization during the 1980s. If the Patriot Act had been in effect at the time, any U.S. citizen who communicated with the ANC while organizing opposition to South Africa’s racist system would have been eligible for a lengthy prison term. Now, it's the ruling party in today’s post-apartheid South Africa. The ANC isn’t the only example. In the early 1990s, Robert Gelbard, Bill Clinton's special envoy to the Balkans, described the Kosovo Liberation Army as, “without any questions, a terrorist group.” As journalist Michael Moran noted, by the end of the decade, “the United States had embraced the KLA's cause,” and, “after the war, the KLA was transformed into the Kosovo Protection Corps, which now works alongside NATO forces patrolling the province.” An American may have sided with the Serbs or with the KLA, but if the Patriot Act had been in effect, engaging the latter would have constituted a serious crime. Other groups once designated as terrorist organizations that have either laid down their arms or joined the political process include the Irish Republican Army and the Palestine Liberation Organization. At the same time, some organizations that commit terrible crimes against civilians never make the list because their goals dovetail with our own. Sometimes we even support them. During the 1980s, the Nicaraguan contras were known to torture, rape and kill innocent civilians sympathetic to the Sandinistas, but Ronald Reagan praised the group as heroic “freedom fighters.” In Iran, the Mujahedin-e Kalq (MEK) is universally condemned as a terrorist organization, and the United States government has listed it as one. But that didn’t stop former Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo from saying, “We should be aiding them, instead of restricting their activities. We can use the MEK; they are in fact warriors. Where we need to use that kind of force, we can use them.” It’s worth noting that Islamic groups lead the list of designated terrorist organizations, followed by communists and nationalists. Groups like the Gush Emunim Underground — a radical Israeli settler group that was responsible for a series of attacks against Palestinian civilians — don’t make the cut. It’s a clear signal that the State Department’s list is highly politicized. added by: Omnomynous

Argentina Hits The Gas, Laps South Korea In Second Half

If you can look past Gonzalo Higuain’s hat trick—gifted to him by a generous and generously brilliant in the open field Lionel Messi—the crib sheet on Argentina emerged solidly in their 4-1 romp over South Korea. They score, they score again, and sometimes they burp up the ball in their own backfield and risk forfeiting all the offensive wizardry to defensive negligence. Messi was in fine form even though he didn’t score, threading the ball through South Korean defenders to find his teammates (especially Higuain) forward, and Carlos Tevez ground away with his usual manic work rate, and yes they scored four goals and looked spectacular doing so. When it all congeals it is the tastiest flan this year’s World Cup can offer, especially coming off the gilded toe of Messi. What the skeptic will say, however, is that the Argentines have a habit of smoking carelessly amidst all that high-powered ammunition they have. Sometimes this results in the careless goal surrendered before the half, or on the goalkeeping gaffe and defensive breakdown that could have surrendered an equalizer just before they recovered and drove down for a quick and decisive third goal. Make no mistake: they are magnificent moving forward. So was Spain, and they got an Alp dropped on them yesterday by the Swiss, a cautionary tale the Argentines should note moving forward into the knockout stage.
