Incarcerated rapper gets added time for failing to file with the IRS. By Rob Markman Ja Rule Photo: Mark Mainz/Getty Images As if getting hit with a two-year jail bid wasn’t enough, rapper Ja Rule just got some more time tacked onto his current sentence. On Monday (July 18), Rule (born Jeffrey Atkins) was sentenced to 28 months in prison to run concurrent with his existing sentence for failing to file tax returns with the IRS for more than $1.1 million in taxes. Rule’s attorney, Stacey Richman, told MTV News she is grateful the court didn’t judge the rapper on his public persona. “We were all very concerned about what the potentials were, and we think that the outcome was very fair and that the court took him into account as an individual, and we appreciate that tremendously,” she said. In December 2010, Rule pleaded guilty to attempted gun possession stemming from a 2007 arrest. The 35-year old MC turned himself in June 8 to begin the bid, and got hit with the additional time Monday in a New Jersey federal court. The sentence was the result of Ja’s March admission of his failure to file for money earned from 2004 to 2006. The former Murder Inc. rapper commented on his tax troubles when he appeared on MTV’s “RapFix Live” in April. “Let me just clear this up for people who think that Ja Rule doesn’t pay taxes: bullsh–,” the rapper told MTV News’ Sway Calloway. “Ja Rule pays plenty of taxes, millions of dollars in taxes. I owed them a little bit more. I had some issues when the whole Murder Inc. thing went down with my accountant, and she had some federal issues with the boys herself for doing some things, so I fell into a few issues there, but it’s not an issue like that. That’s being taken care of.” When handing down the sentence, U.S. Judge Patty Shwartz said, “Taxpayers do not have the luxury of deciding whether to comply with the laws.” What the added time means for Rule is that, in theory, he will serve a full 28 months regardless whether his current New York state sentence ends early. If the rapper ends up serving the entire 24 months of his current incarceration, he will owe the government the extra four months. However, “good behavior” creates the possibility of a shorter federal sentence. Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ With Ja Rule Related Artists Ja Rule

Time to update your African map again. Congratulations to the brothers and sisters in South Sudan — who have finally gained independence after decades of civil war. The United States on Saturday recognized the Republic of South Sudan, the world’s newest nation, as a sovereign and independent state. President Barack Obama said in a statement that, “This historic achievement is a tribute, above all, to the generations of southern Sudanese who struggled for this day.” South Sudan became independent after civil wars that spanned more than 50 years. Millions of people died in the conflicts as the black African tribes from the south battled the mainly Arab north for independence. The warring sides reached a peace deal in 2005. The country’s flag was officially raised for the first time over Juba, South Sudan’s capital, on Saturday after the speaker of the legislature made a formal proclamation of independence from Sudan.. Obama said the people of South Sudan and Sudan “must recognize that they will be more secure and prosperous if they move beyond a bitter past and resolve differences peacefully.” “Lasting peace will only be realized if all sides fulfill their responsibilities,” he said. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the U.S. will remain a “steadfast partner” as South Sudan seeks to build a free, democratic and inclusive society. “The strong ties between our peoples go back many decades, and we are committed to continuing to build on the partnership we have already established in the years ahead,” she said. Clinton commended the government of Sudan on its decision to be the first to recognize South Sudan’s independence. It’s been a long time coming but independence is finally here for South Sudan. This year has seen so many drastic changes across the world. We hope that violence and bloodshed can be a thing of the past in South Sudan and wish the people a prosperous start for their new nation. African-American unemployment is real, and the Congressional Black Caucus is not feelin the way Barry-O is handling the situation: Members of the Congressional Black Caucus on Thursday publicly accused the Obama administration of failing to adequately address a veritable epidemic of African American unemployment. “Can you imagine a situation where any other group of workers, if 34 percent of white women were out there looking for work and couldn’t find it?” asked Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a Missouri Democrat and chairman of the caucus. “You would see congressional hearings and community gatherings. There would be rallies and protest marches. There is no way that this would be allowed to stand.” In May, the black unemployment rate was at 16.2 percent compared to 9.1 percent overall joblessness and 8 percent levels among white workers. In Milwaukee, Wis., a staggering 34 percent of black men are unemployed, CBS news reported. The Obama administration has focused on broad-based initiatives aimed at lowering unemployment in general, while declining to address elevated rates among minority groups. The administration unleashed an $800 billion package of spending measures aimed at stimulating economic growth, while extending unemployment benefits and increasing funding for community health centers. These programs are also sure to help black and Latino Americans hard hit by the recession, Obama said at a White House press conference in April. Debate about the ability of a universal job creation strategy to address persistent and disproportionate African American unemployment occupied a significant portion of Thursday’s gathering. So too did concerns about the political feasibility of any sort of effort to target black joblessness, the public’s appetite for programs that may look and sound like affirmative action and common assumptions about why so many black people do not have jobs. Black Americans make up about 12 percent of the nation’s population, but about 20 percent of the unemployed. “This is an American crisis that demands an American response at the highest echelons of our government,” said Michael Eric Dyson, a writer, Georgetown University professor and frequent social and political commentator on television and radio programs aimed at a black audiences. “And that does include the White House.” Discuss… Source
