Mitt Romney Sweeps Wisconsin, Maryland, D.C. Primaries

With more than half the delegates needed for nomination, Romney setting sights on President Obama. By Gil Kaufman Mitt Romney at an election-night rally in Milwaukee, Wisconsin Photo: Getty Images Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney took a big step toward locking down the GOP presidential nomination on Tuesday when he pulled off a clean sweep of the day’s three primaries. With decisive victories in Wisconsin, Maryland and the District of Columbia, Romney appeared to finally vanquish his rivals as he increasingly turned his attention to President Obama. Romney won 42.5 percent of the vote in Wisconsin, outpacing his only remaining threat, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, who earned 37.6 percent. Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich were well behind both men in all three contests. In Maryland, Romney took 49.1 percent to Santorum’s 28.9 and in Washington, D.C., Romney landed a commanding 70 percent to Paul’s 12 and Gingrich’s 11; Santorum was not on the ballot in D.C. “This has really been quite a night. We won a great victory tonight in our campaign to restore the promise of America,” Romney said. “President Obama thinks he’s doing a good job — I’m not kidding,” he told a crowd in Milwaukee while standing in front of a large American flag, according to the New York Times . “It’s enough to make you think that years of flying around on Air Force One, surrounded by an adoring staff of true believers telling you that you’re great and you’re doing a great job, it’s enough to make you think that you might become a little out of touch.” After once again slamming the president for creating what he deemed a “government-centered society” based on bloated White House policies, Romney promised his followers that he would preside over a different America if he wins in November. “The dreamers can dream a little bigger, the help wanted signs can be dusted off, and we can start again,” he said. “And this time we’ll get it right.” Romney now has 58 percent of the delegates needed to secure the nomination, but his slow, methodical march to the magic number of 1,144 is not quite over, as Santorum vowed that he would stay in the race through the April 24 primaries. Five states will vote on that day, including his home state of Pennsylvania, where Santorum believes he can put up a convincing victory that might pave the way to more wins in May. According to estimates, Romney has 648 delegates so far to Santorum’s 264. Even before Romney could celebrate, he got a taste of what the general election might feel like when President Obama singled him out for some criticism while speaking to a crowd of editors and reporters in Washington. Obama slammed Romney for supporting a GOP budget proposal that the president likened to “social Darwinism.” “He said that he’s ‘very supportive’ of this new budget,” Obama said of Romney, before seeming to mock his potential challenger’s one-percent pedigree. “And he even called it ‘marvelous,’ which is a word you don’t often hear when it comes to describing a budget … it’s a word you don’t hear generally.” He assailed the budget plan put forward by House Republicans for slashing funding for education and infrastructure in favor of more tax breaks for the wealthy. The fiery speech came on the same day that Obama clinched the uncontested Democratic presidential nomination with wins in all three states. With Santorum (not to mention Gingrich and Paul) showing no signs of leaving the GOP contest, pundits predicted that the road ahead for Romney could still be tough, as he must continue to beat back the other contenders in some Southern primaries in May while attempting to focus his fire on Obama. Keith Olbermann: Fired By Current TV!

Keith Olbermann has just been fired by the cable network that took him in after the much higher-profile cable network he was previously on cut him loose. Current TV, which was co-founded by Al Gore, released a statement saying it was parting ways with the pundit , surprisingly citing a difference in values. The decision comes less than a year after Keith Olbermann was fired by MSNBC , then hired by Current to help energize the network’s primetime ratings. Current said in a statement this afternoon: “We created Current to give voice to those Americans who refuse to rely on corporate-controlled media and are seeking an authentic progressive outlet.” “We are more committed to those goals today than ever before.” “Current was founded on the values of respect, openness, collegiality, and loyalty to our viewers. Unfortunately these values are no longer reflected in our relationship with Keith Olbermann and we have ended it.” Current also announced today that it will be giving former New York Governor and CNN personality Eliot Spitzer a show in the network’s 8 p.m. hour.

Mitt Romney Grabs Three Early Super Tuesday Wins

Newt Gingrich easily takes a must-win contest in Georgia, while Rick Santorum lands Tennessee. By Gil Kaufman Mitt Romney Photo: Getty Images After all the hype, bluster, lead changes and fretting about low voter turnout , early exit polls revealed that former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney had scored three early victories in Super Tuesday ‘s primary races. Romney, who was hoping that the 10-state contest would help him finally solidify his status as the leading GOP presidential candidate, was on track to score a decisive victory in his home state of Massachusetts, as well as a win in Virginia, where his only opponent was Congressman Ron Paul. In that contest, The New York Times was projecting that Romney would secure 59 percent of the vote to Paul’s 41. Romney’s lead in Vermont, however, was slimmer at 39 percent to Paul’s 27 with less than one-quarter of precincts reporting. In a victory he said he needed to secure in order to stay in the mix, former Georgia Congressman and House Speaker Newt Gingrich was able to pull off a big win in Georgia, the state with the day’s richest prize . Though he will share the 76-delegate count with either Romney or Santorum (depending on how much of the vote they end up getting), it was likely enough of a victory to keep the Lazarus-like Gingrich in the hunt and to secure him Secret Service protection as of tomorrow. At press time, he had 47 percent of the vote to Santorum’s 24 and Romney’s 22. The day’s second-biggest prize was in the crucial swing state of Ohio , where 66 delegates were at stake and the vote was much too close to call at press time. CNN had Romney at 42 percent to Santorum’s 36 with just a fraction of precincts reporting. Not only is Ohio considered a pivotal state in the general election, but no Republican has made it to the White House without carrying the state in the general election. Santorum appeared to be on the path to winning in Oklahoma, and he’s been declared the winner in Tennessee, which looks like it could be his only walk-off victory of the night. Results from caucuses in Alaska, Idaho and North Dakota will not be available until later in the night. Super Tuesday boasted a total of 419 delegates total, the biggest haul to date in the 2012 GOP race. But as gaudy as that number is, it represents about one-third of all available delegates. The winning candidate will have to roll up 1,144 to secure the nomination and face off against President Obama in November, and with the winner’s circle still overstuffed, that path seems like it will continue to have a number of significant obstacles. Maryland to Pass Gay Marriage Bill This Afternoon

A hard fought measure to legalize same-sex marriage will officially be signed into law in Maryland today. The signing is set for 5 p.m. in the State House. A marriage bill came within a whisker of passage in 2011, but was shelved in the House of Delegates at the last minute when leaders fell a few votes shy. Securing those “few votes” this year took up much of the first 45 days of Maryland’s General Assembly’s legislative session, but it eventually got done. Gov. Martin O’Malley will sign the bill into law today. Though both the House and the Senate chambers are dominated by Democrats, same-sex marriage was not an easy sell for the Democratic governor. Even with the governor’s signature today, same sex couples won’t get Maryland marriage certificates until the law goes into effect in January 2013. There’s also the threat of a vote to overrule the law. Fired-up opponents have pledged to collect 100,000 signatures opposing the bill by June 30. That’s about twice what they would need to trigger a state-wide referendum on the controversial topic, which would appear on the ballot in November. Maryland joins Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Iowa and Washington in permitting same sex marriage rights. California’s controversial Prop 8, which banned same sex marriage, was recently declared unconstitutional , but faces a protracted appeals process.
