Yelawolf Recalls Meeting Eminem For The First Time

Shady Records rapper also tells MTV News’ ‘RapFix Live’ that Em got him to curb his drinking. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway When Yelawolf first met his new boss, Eminem, the meeting couldn’t have been more casual. “He said, ‘What’s up? I’m Marshall,’ ” Yelawolf recalled to MTV News on Thursday’s (March 10) “RapFix Live.” The meeting obviously went well: Yela is the latest recruit to Em’s Shady Records empire , along with Slaughterhouse (Joe Budden, Crooked I, Joell Oritz and Royce Da 5’9″.) Yela and Em talked in Detroit after producer Jim Jonsin and Eminem’s manager urged the rapper to listen to the upstart’s music . They shared similarities in their upbringing, and the partnership paid off immediately when the Grammy-winning superstar bestowed the young lyricist with advice, according to Yela. “I’m a drinker; I drink a lot,” he explained. “My management was concerned about some advice he could give me about slowing down so I don’t get caught up in that life. He told me if it gets to the point where you need a drink before you go onstage, like you require that to function, is when you need to check yourself. And honestly, that’s where I was at that point. And I’ve changed. I don’t drink before I perform anymore.” The Alabama rapper will stick knock back a beer, but he’s given up overdoing it before shows. Now, he says, he’s enjoying himself more and his confidence has grown. And that courage helped when he first played Eminem his debut album. “I’m super excited about the music and fully confident that it’s jamming,” he said. “I was a little nervous, but after we broke the ice and really chopped it up, he seemed excited about it. Wiz Khalifa, Nas To Headline Annual Roots Picnic

By Alvin Blanco Nas Photo: Peter Kramer/ Getty Images Grammy Award-winning hip-hop group the Roots have announced that their fourth annual Roots Picnic will be held on Saturday, June 4. The headliners for the daylong mini-music festival are NYC rap veteran Nas and Wiz Khalifa. This year’s picnic will be held at Festival Pier at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia. The event’s bill is loaded with its usual eclectic mix of acts, spanning multiple genres, including Best New Artist Grammy Award winner Esperanza Spalding . Other artists scheduled to perform include folk artist Ariel Pink, electronic/pop band Little Dragon, and rappers Mac Miller and Yelawolf. Special and surprise guests are sure to be added as June 4 approaches, and many of the acts (such as Nas and Spalding) will receive their musical accompaniment from the Roots. In addition to holding down a regular gig as the resident band for “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” the legendary Roots crew have maintained their recording career and perform concerts regularly. Led by drummer Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson and MC Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter, they recently held their annual star-studded Pre-Grammy Jam Session in Hollywood. Their collaborative album with R&B singer John Legend, Wake Up! was nominated for five Grammy Awards this year, winning three for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song and Best R&B Vocal Album. The Roots’ 11th album, How I Got Over, was also nominated, for Best Rap Album. Tickets for the Roots Picnic go on sale Friday, March 4, at 10 a.m. via Live Nation and Ticketmaster. Eminem, Rihanna To Co-Headline U.K.’s V Festival

The ‘Love the Way You Lie’ duo will share the stage at the event’s two sites this August. By D.L. Chandler Eminem and Rihanna Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images After weeks of speculation, organizers for the United Kingdom’s annual V Festival have revealed the 2011 list of featured performers, which includes two Grammy-winning headliners from across the pond. Eminem and hit “Love the Way You Lie” duet partner, Rihanna , will be headlining acts for the popular summer concert event on August 20 in Weston Park. Arctic Monkeys and Plan B, meanwhile, will serve as co-headliners that day at a sister concert held simultaneously at nearby Hylands Park. On August 21, the two sets of headlining acts switch stages and hold another concurrent concert — a hallmark of the festival. Em’s involvement in the event had been rumored for weeks, but without any solid confirmation that the Detroit bad boy would appear. Rihanna’s inclusion in the concerts also had been questionable, but organizers worked hard to secure the singer. Eminem’s star has been aglow of late, with the popular MC basking in the success of his seventh studio effort Recovery , which helped him snag the coveted Rap Album of the Year Grammy award for a second year in a row. Slim Shady’s Grammy-winning co-star Rihanna — who is a record-setting female solo artist for sales in the U.K. — has had another successful year. The Barbadian pop artist’s fifth studio release, Loud , has sold more than 1 million copies so far. Eminem and Rihanna will be joined by a few of their stateside pals at the V Festival, along with many notable U.K. acts. Some of the other artists slated to play the festival include “Black and Yellow” star Wiz Khalifa, pop singer Bruno Mars, rock legends Duran Duran, DJ/producer Mark Ronson and grime rapper Dizzee Rascal. The U.K. event is not the only big festival that Eminem is set to headline this year. Rep says singer was injured in Singapore and failed to pack ‘more sensible shoes.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe Mariah Carey (file) Photo: Theo Wargo/ Getty Images Days after a video of Mariah Carey taking a dramatic tumble onstage over the weekend hit the Web, the powerhouse — and possibly pregnant — singer was snapped at Los Angeles’ LAX airport tooling around in a wheelchair. On Wednesday (September 29), Carey’s rep revealed that the Grammy-winning songstress sustained an injury in Asia and that she needed the new set of wheels because the famously glamorous star only brought along treacherously high heels. “Mariah twisted her ankle in Singapore and should have packed more sensible shoes, but she doesn’t have any,” Carey’s rep, Cindi Berger, told UsMagazine.com. “I’m sending her a pair of flats today.” Although the video shows Carey sporting a fuller figure, the superstar songbird has ducked rumors that she is indeed expecting. “I appreciate everyone’s well-wishes. But I am very superstitious,” she wrote on her website in August . “When the time is right, everyone will know — even Cindi Berger.” Carey’s hubby, Nick Cannon, hasn’t been any more forthcoming about whether the duo are expecting a little one. However, he has explained that Carey is waiting for the right time to announce any news she may have. “I think ‘superstitious’ might be the wrong word,” Cannon explained to Us last month. “I think it’s more of a spiritual thing, like trying to stay true and stay private for as long as you possibly can. She wants to keep as much privacy as she possibly can.” Cannon maintained that Carey has the final word when it comes to confirming any impending arrivals. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it time and time again — when my wife feels like talking about whatever she wants to talk about, you will hear it directly from her,” he said. “We all know it’s extremely personal, and it is for a woman to deal with things with her body, and especially when dealing with the idea of childbirth and all that stuff.” Despite the onstage spill, Carey sent out a post-show tweet referencing the incident and assuring fans that she was all right. “TY SO much to my fans in Singapore!!! Yeah, several hectic moments, (lol!)but I tried to swirl them into festive!.Love+ God Bless!” she tweeted on Sunday. “Again Singapore, thanks so much for allowing me to just be who I am &just have fun+connect w/everyone there! Photo: MTV News NEW YORK — T.I.’s King Uncaged doesn’t have a concrete release date yet, but the Grammy-winning superstar said he’s going to choose his next single within a few days. “I don’t know, we’re gonna figure that out over the weekend,” Tip told MTV News at his star-studded secret show in Manhattan. “It’s gonna be jammin’. It’s gonna be like that. “Some people wanna hear me go more ‘hood,” he added of the type of records up for consideration. “Some people think I should go ahead and do my regular one-two and let them come back to me.” Regardless of what new song the King of the South goes with, he already has ample music in the marketplace now. Tip’s latest two cameos — he’s on Drake’s “Fancy” with Swizz Beatz, and he joins Jadakiss and Erykah Badu on Rick Ross’ “Maybach Music 3” — are paying dividends and going over heavy with the fans. “Both of them, man, the opportunity was introduced to me by the artist, and all I can say is, I have a mutual respect for Drake as well as Rick Ross,” Tip said. “It was my pleasure to do it. “I didn’t know it was gonna be Ross and Jada,” he said about “MM3.” “I just got on there because Ross asked me to get on there. Sean Penn Questions Wyclef Jean Presidential Campaign

Earlier today, Wyclef Jean officially kicked off his campaign to be the next President of Haiti . But the singer already faces opposition from an Oscar winner and well-known activist in the region: Sean Penn. Asked by Larry King for his take on Jean’s political ambitions, Penn cited allegations that Wyclef mishandled $400,000 in earthquake-relief donations and said the artist has been absent from his native country. “This is somebody who’s going to receive an enormous amount of support from the United States, and I have to say I’m very suspicious of it,” said Penn, who runs a 55,000-person tent camp via his J/P Haitian Relief Organization, adding: “I’m not accusing Wyclef Jean of being an opportunist; I don’t know the man. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Victor Barreiro Ne-Yo on the set of his music video for “Beautiful Monster” Photo: MTV News Father-to-be Ne-Yo filmed the video for his new single, “Beautiful Monster,” earlier this week in Los Angeles and the Grammy-winning singer said the clip is just the first in a visual story he plans to tell on his next album. ” ‘Beautiful Monster,’ in a nutshell, represents the love interest/ archnemesis in the story [of] Libra Scale, which the entire album is based off of,” the singer told MTV News. “She’s a monster, beautiful monster/ Beautiful monster, but I don’t mind,” he sings on the song’s chorus. “And I need her, said I need her/ Beautiful monster, but I don’t mind/ No, I don’t mind.” The synth-heavy number is the lead offering from Ne-Yo’s upcoming set , one he promised us earlier this year would be “a little bit different.” And the sound of “Beautiful Monster” is certainly long on overseas influences. When it came time to shoot a clip for the song, Ne-Yo admitted he usually accepts the treatments his directors come up with. But this time, the Def Jam star stretched, crafting a concept on his own, a career first. Going forward, the singer explained, each video will connect to the overall story he wants to tell through his fourth solo LP, the follow-up to 2008’s Year of the Gentleman. ” ‘Beautiful Monster’ is one piece of a very long and intricate story,” Ne-Yo revealed. “When you see the first video, make sure that you’re paying attention because all of the videos tell a story.
