‘You really just want that one person to get what they deserve,’ hip-hop/soul singer tells us. By Kelley L. Carter Adele Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Not that there’s a bandwagon, but Mary J. Blige says she can’t get enough of Grammy-nominated singer Adele . The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul says that something is wrong if the Brit singer doesn’t walk away with all six of her nominations at Sunday’s Grammy Awards . Adele is up for several big awards Sunday night, including Album, Record and Song of the Year for her work on the critically acclaimed chart-topper 21. “I’m sure an Adele fan and I love what she’s done this year,” Blige said on the red carpet before she took the stage. “Her album was amazing. She’s amazing and I’m just rooting for her. I’m rooting for everybody. But you really just want that one person to get what they deserve. Finally. And not give it to someone else [just] because. Just win all six of her awards, you know?” Grammy winner Blige performed at a private pre-Grammy event on Thursday night at Avalon in Hollywood, where she sang 10 songs including “No More Drama” and “Family Affair.” She sang live for a few hundred fans (though it also was streamlined on Facebook), including famous faces like Forrest Whitaker, Chelsea Handler, Sophia Bush, Malin Akerman, Kelis, Paris Hilton and Natasha Bedingfield. Before performing, Blige explained why it is important to give back as a celebrity. She partnered with Belvedere vodka and RED to help raise funds for the Global Fund, the world’s leading financier of programs to Fight HIV/AIDS in Africa. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! From seating-chart plotting to all-star sound checks, we take you behind the scenes at Grammy run-throughs. By James Montgomery Adam Levine rehearsing for the 54th Annual Grammy Awards Photo: Rick Diamond/ WireImage LOS ANGELES — Everywhere you turn inside Staples Center, there are people (and things) in motion: Set pieces are being noisily constructed (and just as noisily deconstructed ), lights are raised to the ceiling, focused, then lowered again, cameras on cranes swoop in and nearly scrape the stage, walkie-talkies crackle, security guards shift their weight from one foot to the other, musicians scramble down hallways, techs assemble drum kits and tune guitars, directors shout instructions and stare intently at their clipboards. If there’s a method to all this madness, it is not readily apparent. Mostly, you just try to stay out of the way. It’s all in preparation for Sunday’s 54th Grammy Awards , of course, and if everything goes according to plan, you probably won’t even notice the intricate details (camera movements, presenter cues, etc.) that were rehearsed time and time again or think twice about just how they get all those massive video screens to work in perfect synchronization. The goal is to make these things all appear to be seamless, effortless, nearly invisible. Which is why, in the days leading up to the big show, the Staples Center is one continuously buzzing hive of activity. Onstage, Foster the People , Maroon 5 and the recently reunited Beach Boys are working out the kinks for their Sunday-night performance, which, at the moment, include monitor malfunctions, a de-tuned organ and a wayward timpani drum. Maroon frontman Adam Levine stands stage left, fiddling with his in-ear and humming his harmonies over and over again. At one point, a stagehand saves him from being smashed by a gigantic LED screen, which is being lowered directly above his head. Stage right, Mark Foster has his arms crossed, a gigantic smile creased across his face, marveling at the sheer spectacle of the thing. Eventually, after an army of producers and techs have crisscrossed the stage, the Beach Boys amble up, take their places and, without a moment of rehearsal, positively nail the wide-screen harmonies of “Good Vibrations.” Levine can’t help but laugh at the display, and as the song lilts along, he mimes the crashing timpani drums and mouths the chorus. Of course, the action onstage is only part of the production (though it is a part that truly never ends; LL Cool J and Nicki Minaj are set to rehearse Friday (February 10), and there are rumors that both Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen will share the stage at some point too). While instruments are tuned and harmonies perfected, an army of production assistants are busy plotting the Grammy seating chart — a bit of well-planned politicking that’s nearly as important to the attendees as actually winning a gilded gramophone. Seatmates are meticulously plotted by producers, and how close you sit to the stage itself (and who you’re sitting with ) is a pretty good representation of just how much clout you’ve got. Which means that, on Sunday, the front row will be populated by Katy Perry, Rihanna and Fergie. Heavily-favored Adele will sit in row two, next to Bruce Springsteen. Taylor Swift shares a row with Nicki Minaj, Lady Gaga is seated next to Miranda Lambert, Bon Iver is across the aisle from R. Kelly (imagine the possibilities!), and Chris Brown will rub elbows with the indomitable Diana Ross. Of course, all of this could change — these are just the rehearsals after all. And as the countdown to the big show continues, there’s still a whole lot of rehearsing to do. Even after the show goes live, that constant blur of motion inside Staples is likely to continue unabated. This is music’s biggest night, after all. Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Get a sneak peek at the ‘Hunger Games’ soundtrack video before it premieres Monday at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift in her “Safe & Sound” video Photo: Big Machine On Monday, Taylor Swift will debut the video for “Safe & Sound,” her Civil Wars-assisted single from the “Hunger Games” soundtrack, during “MTV First: Taylor Swift” at 7:54 p.m. ET on MTV, followed by an exclusive chat with Swift herself on MTV.com. But you don’t have to wait until Monday to catch a sneak peek of the emotional video. In a mini-tease, Swift is wearing a long, white dress. Her hair and makeup are not done — it’s a far cry from the red-carpet-ready Taylor fans are used to seeing. She sings the moody track while she walks through the woods — an obvious connection to the “Hunger Games” film and book that inspired the track. After Monday’s video premiere — which will also air live on MTV’s channels in Canada, Europe, Latin America, Australia, Asia and Africa — the Grammy-nominated singer will sit down with MTV News’ Sway Calloway for a 30-minute interview on MTV.com. Fans of the superstar can get in on the action by submitting questions via Twitter @MTVNews with the hashtags #AskTaylor or #MTVFirst. CMT will air “Safe & Sound” at 8 p.m. ET, the same time the music video will debut exclusively online at MTV.com, CMT.com, VH1.com and MTV’s international sites. On Tuesday morning, VH1’s “Big Morning Buzz Live” will feature the video at 10 a.m. ET/PT. The “Hunger Games” soundtrack , which also features Arcade Fire and the Decemberists, drops March 20; the movie hits theaters days later, on March 23. And for those non-Swifties wondering why Taylor chose Monday to drop the video, it’s the 13th and that happens to be the star’s lucky number . Rapper’s critically acclaimed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy didn’t make the cut for Sunday’s top prize, and it’s in good company. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Getty Images One of the favorite parlor games the morning after the Grammy Awards is the predictable bellyaching about which artists got robbed during the big show. And the category that typically draws the most Monday-morning quarterbacking is the biggest one of the night: Album of the Year. Long before the 54th annual ceremony Sunday night, the drumbeat had already begun about an album that failed to make the list despite its wide critical acclaim and deep musicality. Though he’s the leading nominee at this year’s ceremony with seven nods, Kanye West’s career-defining My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy failed to make the cut for the night’s top prize. Take a closer look at this year’s Grammy nominees through photos! Hip-hop heads grumbled that it was a continuation of the Recording Academy’s inability to think outside the mainstream box when awarding a hip-hop album with its highest honor. While Lauryn Hill and Outkast have won in the past, the denial of West’s richly textured, musically adventurous album puts him in pretty good company when it comes to landmark works that either never got a nomination for the award or failed to close the deal. Among the other (in)famous Grammy Album of the Year snubs: 1992 : If any album over the past 20-plus years could be said to completely define its era — not to mention igniting a complete reordering of the musical world — it was Nirvana’s Nevermind. Released in time to be considered at the 1992 Grammys, the landmark album wasn’t even nominated in a year when the winner was Natalie Cole’s Unforgettable … With Love tribute to her late father. Instead of honoring Nirvana, Grammy voters nominated Christian lightweight Amy Grant, Bonnie Raitt, R.E.M. and Paul Simon. Among the other important works that didn’t even make the list: Guns N’ Roses’ ambitious Use Your Illusion double album set, Ten by Pearl Jam and Achtung Baby by U2. 2001 : In one of the all-time Grammy head-scratchers, that year’s honors went to the first album in 20 years from studio-rat duo Steely Dan, Two Against Nature. The pick was especially galling for rock and rap fans, as it meant that another career-pinnacle work, Radiohead’s twisty Kid A and Eminem’s massive The Marshall Mathers LP, had to settle just for being nominated. 2008 : In a year when West garnered his third Album of the Year nod, the Grammys went old-school again, shocking the world by giving the award to veteran jazzman Herbie Hancock’s 47th studio album, the Joni Mitchell tribute River: The Joni Letters. What albums were passed over in the process? Oh, nothing major, just Amy Winehouse’s hugely influential smash breakthrough Back to Black and West’s Graduation. 2009 : The Academy had another chance to make it up to the hip-hop world the following year when Lil Wayne’s massive Tha Carter III was up for the big one. And even though Radiohead’s In Rainbows and Coldplay’s Viva la Vida, or Death and All His Friends were solid contenders, the prize once again went to a lesser-heard disc by a veteran, Raising Sand, a folky collaboration between former Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant and bluegrass star Alison Krauss. ‘It was really hard. I love talking,’ singer says during ’60 Minutes’ special. By James Dinh Adele Photo: Getty Images Sunday is shaping up to be quite a big day for Adele . Not only is the big-voiced diva up for six awards at the Grammys , but she will also open up about her recent throat surgery in a “60 Minutes” interview, airing on CBS immediately before the awards show. In a teaser for the TV special, the British songstress speaks with Anderson Cooper about her vocal-cord procedure as well as how she dealt with the post-surgery restrictions. “They put lasers down your throat, cut off the polyp and kind of laser your hemorrhage back together and fix it,” Adele wearily told the news anchor. She was ordered not to speak a word throughout the months of November and December, but the songstress made the best of a not-so-bright situation by using notepads and a text-to-speech cellphone application to communicate with others. “It was really hard. I love talking,” she said. The singer confessed that the advances in technology made it a little difficult to say what was really on her mind. “I love to swear, and most of them you can’t swear on, but I found this one app where you can swear, so I’m still really getting my point across,” she said with a smile. Adele’s road to recovery will come full-circle when the singer performs at Sunday night’s Grammys . The U.K. songstress recently tweeted her excitement about returning to the stage: “Ima be, Ima be singing at the Grammys. It’s been so long I started to forget I was a singer! I can’t wait.” Chaos! Dwayne Johnson tells MTV News that the ‘pec pop of love’ featured in the ‘Mysterious Island’ trailer ‘gets the attention of a woman.’ By Kara Warner Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” Photo: Warner Bros. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, we have a special treat for all you would-be lovers out there curious about the best ways to woo a woman, courtesy of a very knowledgeable and trusted source: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Johnson is making another splash on the big screen this weekend in “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.” You may or may not have seen a trailer for the film that contains a pec-popping Johnson trying to teach Josh Hutcherson how to romance Vanessa Hudgens (Hutcherson’s love interest in the film) and ladies in general. When MTV News caught up with Johnson during a press day for the upcoming family-friendly adventure film, we asked about the accuracy and practicality of his character’s three “rules” for women. “It’s very accurate,” Johnson assured us. “Number one, with women you want to go opposite your instincts. Generally with men, teenagers, it doesn’t matter the age, you’re well-intended, your instincts tell you to say something, oftentimes especially if it’s emotional you’re going to regret it, and you’re going to end up apologizing to your girl. Inevitably, it always happens. “You have to be sensitive,” he said of his second rule. “Girls just don’t want washboard abs and chests like mine; they need sensitivity. The other thing, this is the most important thing, it’s kind of like jazz, you’ve got to wait for it; it’s called the ‘pec pop of love,’ ” Johnson revealed, with a brief demonstration of his skills in “popping” the muscles in his chest on command. “It gets the attention of a woman. I didn’t say that that was it,” he added when we expressed disbelief in the pec pop’s actual powers of persuasion. “It gets the attention of a woman, then you have to be a gentleman after that and you gotta come with some good lines.” When asked if Johnson has actually used the move in real life, he assured us of its success. “Oh, multiple times,” he said with a knowing smile. “I’ve made many a girl into a new woman doing the pec pop of love.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
Butch Vig tells MTV News he’s ‘really proud’ of Wasting Light, up for Album of the Year at Sunday’s Grammys. By James Montgomery Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl and Nate Mendel Photo: Peter Wafzig/ Getty Images Over the past two decades, Butch Vig has produced albums like Nevermind, Siamese Dream and 21st Century Breakdown (to name just a few), and yet he’s never helmed a project quite like the Foo Fighters’ Wasting Light. Recorded — and mastered — entirely on tape, in Dave Grohl’s garage, it was a deliberately anachronistic disc that not only helped rejuvenate the Foos themselves, but was the kind of Herculean undertaking Vig won’t forget anytime soon. And, in recognition of that undertaking — and the rave reviews Wasting Light has earned since being released last year — the Foos head into Sunday’s 54th Grammy Awards with six nominations, including a nod for the night’s biggest prize: Album of the Year. And in the lead-up to the show, Vig (whose work on the disc earned him a Producer of the Year nom) took time to look back on the making of Light, both the good — and the bad. “I’m really proud of it. Even though it was in the garage and it was a lot of hard work doing it to tape, we had so much fun recording with Dave and the Foos. It’s one of the most fun albums I’ve worked on in my whole career,” he told MTV News. “There was something about making it, where every day was by the seat of your pants, but between the vibe of the band and the songs, God, we laughed a lot. Dave is one of the hardest-working men I know, but he loves to f— around. He’d be playing some guitar part and his daughter would walk in and he’d start making goofy faces, and we’re all on the floor. And he’s still playing the part f—ing perfect. He definitely embraced it. To be honest, I didn’t want it to end.” Of course, that doesn’t mean there weren’t a few setbacks along the way. Basically everything about Wasting Light created challenges at one point or another — including Grohl’s “no computers or else” edict. “I’ve recorded hundreds of records on tape, but I haven’t for over 10 years, so when Dave told me he wanted to do it that way, I looked him in the eye and said, ‘OK, we can do this,’ but I thinking, ‘Oh sh–, oh sh–‘ the whole time,” Vig laughed. “And I started talking to our engineer, and he was like, ‘OK, we’ll record on tape, and then we’ll finish everything in ProTools.’ And then Dave said, ‘There are no computers in the studio. If I see a computer, I’m going to firebomb it and throw it out the window.’ “So, we knew it was going to be tape the entire process, and it was kind of crazy. Just the nature of that process forces you to completely rethink how you’re going to do everything,” he continued. “And the band has to be great, because you can’t fix anything. I’ve had a couple of younger bands come up to me and say, ‘Hey, Butch, do you think you want to do [another album on] tape?’ And my answer is always the same: ‘Only if you can play as good as the Foo Fighters.’ ” And though he finished work on the disc more than a year ago, Vig said he still can’t help listening to Light (“My daughter is always playing it around the house, and my wife has it in her car constantly, so I’m still being inundated by it,” he laughed), which is rare for him. Then again, there are few albums he’s as proud of as this one, and not just because it scored a boatload of Grammy noms. It’s the memories he has from making the record that will stay with him forever — most notably, the making of standout track “I Should Have Known,” which brought him, Grohl and former Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic back together for the first time in nearly 20 years. “To me, that song is definitely the darkest moment on the album, but I kind of find it exhilarating when I listen to it. I remember Dave was sitting a foot away from me when he sang it, and the whole vocal take [on the album] is the first performance he did,” Vig said. “And I just remember the hair on the back of my neck going up, going, ‘This is happening right now, he means all these words, they’re about people he’s known that he’s lost.’ … And I still feel that way when I hear it now. “And, of course, after Krist finished his bass overdub, we sat and talked for about three or four hours. Dave and I split a bottle of wine; I think Krist drank about a half a bottle of whiskey. And it was great, because we were talking about when we were recording Nevermind, ” he continued. “Not so much the actual song recording, but, like, driving over the hill to go see the Butthole Surfers, and Krist was driving after he’d had about a half a bottle of whiskey, and I’m going, ‘Dude, pull over, I gotta drive!’ and then Kurt seeing Rick Rubin at the Buttholes show and running up to him and pretending to shag his leg. It was a great experience having them both in the room, one I’ll never forget.” Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Unnamed sources are telling the Associated Press that the singer will be one of the many performers taking the stage at Sunday’s show. It marks the first time he’ll appear on it since the 2009 incident when he assaulted his then-girlfriend Rihanna during Grammy weekend. That year both stars were scheduled to perform, but both canceled. Rihanna, however, has since appeared on the show. Despite being nominated in years since, Brown has not attended the ceremony. The currently blue-haired pop star is up for Record of the Year for her feel-good empowerment track, “Firework.” The Teenage Dream single is also up for Best Pop Solo Performance. This is hardly her first time performing on the show. At the 2011 Grammys , she performed her songs “Not Like the Movies” and “Teenage Dream.” The Valentine-themed performance also included the debut of footage from her wedding to her now-estranged husband, Russell Brand. In 2009, Perry performed her breakthrough hit “I Kissed a Girl” surrounded by giant, glittering pieces of prop fruit. And in 2010 she took the stage at the Grammy Nominations show and sang her ubiquitous candy-coated track, “California Gurls.” The same day that Perry was announced as a performer, fellow nominee Drake was announced as one of the night’s big presenters, along with Gwyneth Paltrow, Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley. Adele announced her long-rumored Grammy performance on Tuesday. It marks her first performance since a November vocal surgery. “I’m immensely proud to have been asked to perform at this year’s Grammy Awards,” Adele said. “It’s an absolute honor to be included in such a night and for it to be my first performance in months is very exciting and of course nerve-racking, but what a way to get back into it all.” Rihanna, Coldplay, Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney, Foo Fighters, Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson, Jason Aldean and Nicki Minaj are also confirmed to perform live at the 54th annual awards show, which will be hosted by LL Cool J.
