Kanye West Blames Himself For Album Of The Year Snub

‘That’s my fault for dropping Watch the Throne and Dark Fantasy the same year,’ Yeezy tells fans about coveted Grammy nom. By Rob Markman Kanye West Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images Everyone knows that Kanye West takes his awards very seriously, but those who were excepting a Yeezy meltdown for his Grammy Album of the Year snub will be disappointed. On Thursday during the Chicago stop of ‘Ye and Hov’s Watch the Throne Tour , the hometown MC, who is leading the 2012 nominees with seven Grammy nods , addressed the crowd. ‘Something I figured out earlier today, because you know everybody came to me last night like, ‘Congratulations,’ because you know I’m leading — I have the most Grammy nominations once again, like we always do at this time,” Kanye said, drawing thunderous applause from the United Center crowd. “But, you know, people focus, they say, ‘You ain’t have Album of the Year or Record of the Year,’ ” he continued as the fan cheers quickly turned to disapproving boos. Then the outspoken rap star did the unexpected. Instead of sending shots toward the Grammy committee, Kanye blamed himself: “I figured it out though. That’s my fault for dropping Watch the Throne and Dark Fantasy the same year. I should’ve just spaced it out, just a little bit more.” In November 2010, ‘Ye released his fifth studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, . The platinum LP was both critically acclaimed and a commercial success thanks to surefire singles like the rambunctious “Power,” the reflective sing-along “Runaway” and “All of the Lights,” which is nominated for Song of the Year and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Nine months after MBDTF, in August 2011, the Louis Vuitton Don hooked up with Jay-Z to release their tag-team album Watch the Throne . Both Yeezy LPs are nominated in the Best Rap Album category, but neither is in contention for the coveted Album of the Year Award. Instead Adele, the Foo Fighters, Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars and Rihanna will duke it out for the golden gramophone. Surprisingly Kanye West isn’t sweating it, though. “Don’t worry because me and Hov are gonna keep on making sh–,” he said to the crowd. Does this mean we can expect a Watch the Throne sequel? Guess we’ll have to wait till next year to see. What do you think of Kanye’s reaction? Should he have spazzed? Tell us in the comments! Band Perry Wish Nicki Minaj ‘Good Luck’ At Grammys

Best New Artist nominees ‘really honored to represent country.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias The Band Perry Photo: MTV News The Band Perry is up for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards this February. They are up against some stiff competition in the form of Nicki Minaj, Bon Iver, J. Cole and Skrillex. With artists from such a wide range of musical styles making the final cut, the category sets up one of the year’s most-interesting contests. The group’s leading lady spoke to MTV News on Wednesday night backstage at the Grammy Nominations Concert in Los Angeles, where artists including Lady Gaga took the stage . “Our parents were here with us tonight, so we all hugged, and I cried a little bit, and the second thing that popped into my mind was, ‘What a diverse category!’ ” Kimberly Perry shared. “There’s so many genres represented just in the new artist batch, and we’re just really, really honored to represent country in that.” The band, composed of three siblings, has been getting attention in the mainstream thanks to the success of their self-titled album, released in October 2010, and its breakthrough hit “If I Die Young,” a ballad about the perils of, well, dying young. But, the group was less focused on the morose and more focused on Nicki Minaj when they chatted with us. Think Beyonc

Bruno Mars Calls Grammy-Nominated ‘Grenade’ His ‘Trophy Song’

Mars and the Smeezingtons also recognized for Doo-Wops & Hooligans at Wednesday’s Grammy Nominations Concert. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Matt Elias Bruno Mars backstage at the Grammy Nominations Concert Photo: MTV News Bruno Mars is up for six Grammy Awards, including such marquee noms as Album of the Year for Doo-Wops & Hooligans as well as Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance for his ballad “Grenade.” Shortly after the singer learned he and his team, the Smeezingtons, were recognized for their breakthrough album and track, Mars chatted with MTV News backstage after the Grammy Nominations Concert in Los Angeles, and he seemed pretty overwhelmed by all of it. “Incredible. We worked really hard,” he said. “We worked hard in the studio right down the street, actually. And it’s a little tiny shack, but for the two years we were in there, we just locked ourselves in that room and came up with Doo-Wops & Hooligans .” All the hard work on the album, which also features hits “The Lazy Song” and “Just the Way You Are,” seems to have paid off with recognition not only for the release, but also for its crowning jewel of a track. “Worked extremely hard on ‘Grenade.’ That was the hardest song on the whole album to finish because we knew we had something, and to get all that emotion out,” he said. “I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we’re really happy that that song is being recognized because that’s like our trophy song.” While Mars seemed pretty poised backstage, he admitted it was a little hard for him to keep his cool while they were announcing the nominees during the telecast, which included two performances by Lady Gaga . “They kept cutting the camera to me every time. I wanted to jump up and punch [Smeezingtons partner Philip Lawrence] in the face and knee him, noogies, but I’m trying to be cool ’cause I know mom’s watching,” Mars joked. The 54th annual Grammy Awards will air February 12 on CBS. Will Bruno Mars win a Grammy? Share your thoughts below! ‘Lone Ranger’ Is ‘Built Around Tonto,’ Director Says

‘You’ve heard the Lone Ranger’s story; you just haven’t heard it from this guy,’ Gore Verbinski tells MTV News. By Kara Warner Gore Verbinski Photo: MTV News Now that Disney, Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp have ironed out most of the budget kinks surrounding their production of ” The Lone Ranger ,” we can all rest easy that the masked man and his trusty sidekick Tonto are headed to the big screen soon. When MTV News caught up with Verbinski at the Hollywood Awards Gala last night, where his quirky animated film “Rango” received the Hollywood Animation Award, we asked how he was feeling about the film and what his plans are for the adaptation. “I feel great. We’re not shooting a Western in the middle of winter; the whole thing is pushed into a more reasonable time of year, so now we have to go make the movie,” Verbinski said, speaking to the film’s new May 31, 2013, release date. “There’s been a lot of talk. Hopefully in a year and a half we’ll have something we can talk about.” Verbinski went on to say that he’s been hard at work on the screenplay for two years and that the central character is not the Ranger. “It’s all built around Tonto,” he said. “You’ve heard the Lone Ranger’s story; you just haven’t heard it from this guy. He was there.” Depp has already teased that their take on the beloved duo’s western adventures will be “interesting,” to say the least. “I like the character. I think I have interesting plans for the character, and I think the film itself could be entertaining and very funny,” he said. “But also I like the idea of having the opportunity to make fun of the idea of the Indian as a sidekick — which has always been [the case] throughout the history of Hollywood. The Native American has always been a second-class, third-class, fourth-class citizen, and I don’t see Tonto that way at all. So it’s an opportunity for me to salute Native Americans.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Lady Gaga To Perform At Grammy Nominations Concert

Jason Aldean will also hit the stage when this year’s nominees are announced. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Scott Gries/ Picture Group The Grammy Awards may be months away, but the Recording Academy is already gearing up for the big show. Lady Gaga has been tapped to perform at “The Grammy Nominations Concert Live!! — Countdown to Music’s Biggest Night,” airing next month. She’ll be joined by country star Jason Aldean, who will also perform at the fourth annual event. The show, which takes place November 30 at the Nokia Theatre in L.A., will once again be hosted by LL Cool J. It will air on CBS at 10 p.m. In addition to performances from Aldean, Gaga and others who have yet to be announced, nominees in several of the categories will be announced at the show. The Grammys air live on February 12. This certainly isn’t Gaga’s first time at the Grammy rodeo. She’s won five awards in the past, including trophies for Best Short Form Music Video and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for “Bad Romance,” as well as Best Pop Vocal Album for The Fame Monster, Best Dance Recording for “Poker Face” and Best Electronic/Dance Album for her debut album, The Fame. Last year, Gaga made headlines when she appeared on the red carpet in an egg and emerged in yolk-colored clothes to perform “Born This Way.” She previously performed with Elton John in 2010. Aldean has not previously been nominated for any Grammy Awards. While nominees for the show will be announced that night, it should be noted that both Gaga and Aldean are eligible. They both released albums within the timeframe: Gaga with Born This Way and Aldean with My Kinda Party. Who are you rooting for at this year’s Grammys? Let us know in the comments! Rick Ross’ God Forgives Will Have Others ‘Chasing’ Sound

J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League’s Rook tells Mixtape Daily, ‘We’re gonna have a big presence on that album.’ By Rob Markman J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League and Laws Photo: MTV News Behind the Beats: J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League With each album, Rick Ross has grown — and not just physically. While his 2006 debut, Port of Miami, was filled with repetitive trap-rap anthems like “Hustlin’,” “White House” and “Where My Money,” the Bawse has expanded sonically with each release. Credit the J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League with part of Ross’ musical elevation. Crafting four tracks on Rozay’s sophomore Trilla, including the Jay-Z-featuring “Maybach Music,” JL have gone on to land tracks on each of the Bawse’s following albums. Expect no different from the upcoming God Forgives, I Don’t. “We just talked to the homey, and we’re gonna have a big presence on that album,” the League’s Rook told Mixtape Daily while walking the black carpet at the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards. With “Maybach Music,” the Grammy Award-winning production trio — consisting of Rook, Colione and Kenny Barto — gave Ross a well-orchestrated instrumental, complete with strings and operatic background vocals. It’s a formula they followed on the song’s 2009 sequel, “Maybach Music Part 2,” with Ross, T-Pain, Lil Wayne and Kanye West, as well on “Maybach Music Part 3” from Rozay’s Teflon Don LP. With Ross tracks like “Aston Martin Music,” “Rich Off Cocaine” and “Magnificent” already under their belt, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League have proven to be more musical than many of their rap contemporaries. For God Forgives, I Don’t, the Tampa, Florida, beatmakers look to help elevate Ross’ sound once again. “It’s funny because you think that [Ross] might’ve reached his peak,” Rook said. “People think that they might’ve figured his sound out, but when they hear the new album, they’re gonna be chasing that new sound.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines .
