Oliver Stone’s Savages: Why Uma Thurman’s Scenes Were Cut

The adaptation process is always a tricky one, but Oliver Stone had to make some especially tough choices in editing his big-screen version of Don Winslow’s Savages – and as a result, scenes with Uma Thurman , one of his cast’s biggest names, were left on the cutting room floor. Paring down the book to tell the tale of two Southern California weed growers ( Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson ) going commando to get their kidnapped girlfriend ( Blake Lively ) back from the Mexican cartel, Stone (who adapted Winslow’s novel with Shane Salerno and the author) had to leave certain material out; at a rambling two-plus hour run time, it’s already crowded with languid scenes and a deep line-up of characters. Thurman joined the cast last year and shot scenes playing the Laguna Beach-dwelling mother of Lively’s rich hippie girl O (short for Ophelia). The character, a frequently absent multiple divorcee, is mentioned in the final cut but ultimately was snipped out in the name of ruthless editing. (There goes that Pulp Fiction Travolta reunion.) “Oh we cut a lot; the book is one hundred and twenty scenes. I think we only in a movie have 30 scenes to play,” Stone told journalists in Los Angeles of the sections of the novel whittled down and excised in the adaptation process. “We had to make decisions in script, we made decisions in the editing, we had to consolidate so much and there’s so many things different in the movie than the book, you have to read the book to understand that.” “We have some good deleted scenes that you’ll see one day that are fun, but they had to go,” he continued. Also apparently left on the cutting room floor are scenes of Benicio del Toro as cartel thug Lado at home with his family, including Mia Maestro as his wife – humanizing relationships that del Toro’s Lado mentions but aren’t seen in the film. So perhaps an eventual Savages extended cut/DVD/Blu-ray release will insert Thurman’s scenes back in; Lively says their scenes together help explain why O is the pot-smoking, perhaps reckless free spirit that she is. “Her mom is off with her eight different husbands,” she said. “It’s a shame that you will miss that, in the movie. It was really beautiful stuff with Uma Thurman, and I think it really told a lot more of how a girl could end up this way. She’s the modern girl. Divorces are so much more common now than they were. Love is very untraditional, and these are three people who don’t have a family, creating a family within each other.” Savages is in theaters today. Follow Jen Yamato on Twitter . Cool Hunting met with filmmaker David Lynch at the swanky Chateau Marmont to discuss his design collaboration on a limited edition bottle of Dom Pérignon ( really ), only to discover that his favorite creative muse is the City of Brotherly Love: “I always say my greatest inspiration came from the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. So many reasons, the mood of the place, the architecture, what I saw and heard and felt. It was very magical, but laced with a deep tormenting fear and sickness. And I ate many steak sandwiches there.” [ Cool Hunting via MCN ]

Russell Brand Has Free Reign As Movie Awards Host

‘There is no yelling at Russell,’ executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic tells MTV News about the host’s big night. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz and Jim Cantiello Russell Brand Photo: MTV News UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Russell Brand is like John Locke : Nobody tells him what he can and can’t do. When the British actor and comedian steps onto the Gibson Amphitheatre’s stage Sunday night as host of the MTV Movie Awards , he’ll be able to do literally whatever he wants — he just might get yelled at about it later. Speaking with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz ahead of his Movie Awards appearance, Brand was asked if there are any restrictions on what he can or cannot do, what he can or cannot say, come the big evening. According to the man himself, the answer is a resounding “no,” but that doesn’t mean there isn’t the threat of consequences looming over his head. “[The producers] just go, ‘Do whatever you want!’ And then one hour later they’ll say, ‘You shouldn’t have done that,’ ” he said with all the signature energy that Brand’s become known for. “It’s a weird technique!” But the producers behind the Movie Awards tell a very different tale. When Jim Cantiello spoke with executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic, it became clear that Russell’s capacity to do hilariously bad things onstage is not just limitless, but endorsed by the folks behind the scenes. “No, that’s wrong,” Ignjatovic said when asked if Brand is going to get scolded if he pushes things too far. “There’s no yelling at Russell. It’s all love. The show ends, we go and we hug him, and we tell him it’s great. It’s all love.” Russell, we sure do hope you’re reading this — if you’re to take Mr. Ignjatovic’s words as gospel, then you just might be able to fulfill your greatest wishes come Sunday evening’s end. “MTV Movie Awards incorporates two of my favorite things: movies and awards,” Brand said when he was initially announced for the hosting gig. “If somehow group sex could be involved it would be the greatest night of my life.” So, yeah — we’re not trying to say you can turn this into the MTV Group Sex Awards you’ve dreamed of, Russell, but we might be trying to say that. Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET. Arizona Girl Given Fake Award For Best Homework Excuses; Mom Says Teacher "Humiliated" Her

The mother of an 8-year-old girl presented with a “Catastrophe Award” for the best/most excuses for not doing homework believes her child was humiliated by her teacher. Christina Valdez said her daughter, Cassandra Garcia, came home one day from class at Desert Springs Academy in Tucson, Ariz., with the paper award. The document, which looks like a colorful card, says: “You’re Tops! Catastrophe Award . Awarded to Cassandra Garcia. For Most Excuses for Not Having Homework!” The teacher signed and dated the card, which included a smiley face. Eight-Year-Old Wins ‘Catastrophe Award’ The teacher announced the award in front of Garcia’s entire third grade class, while other students laughed at her daughter, Valdez told KGUN-TV in Tucson. When she called to complain, the principal “blew me off,” Valdez added. “She said it was a joke that was played and that the teachers joke around with the children.” Valdez told KGUN that she didn’t find any of it funny. “I think it’s cruel and no child should be given an award like this. It’s disturbing,” she said, adding that she was unaware of any problem with homework.

Kathie Lee Gifford to Martin Short: How is Your Late Wife?

This clip is just painful to watch. In an interview with Martin Short on The Today Show this morning, Kathie Lee Gifford asked the actor about his kids and their occupations – and then thought she was being complimentary by adding: “And you and Nancy have one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business. How many years now for you guys?” The extremely awkward problem, however, is that Short’s wife passed away from ovarian cancer in 2010. Watch the exchange now to see how well Short handled the questions related to him and Nancy. Kathie Lee Gifford Interview with Martin Short Gifford Tweeted not long after the interview aired: “I send my sincerest apologies to Martin Short and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful.”

Beastie Boys Fans Travis Porter Pay Tribute With Tour

DMC and Biz Markie also weigh in on life and legacy of the late Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch during ‘RapFix Live.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway The Beastie Boys in the mid 1980s Photo: Getty Images None of the members of Travis Porter were even born when the Beastie Boys released hip-hop’s first #1 album in 1986, but the seminal rap trio influenced the new-age party animals all the same. In fact, Travis Porter have been planning to pay homage to the Beasties for some time now: They originally wanted to title their debut album No Sleep Till Atlanta in reference to the BB classic “No Sleep Till Brooklyn.” “A lot of people compare us to the Beastie Boys in some type of way,” Travis Porter’s Ali told “RapFix Live” on Wednesday when he and his group appeared on the show. “Just because the hip-hop and the music and the fun,” Quez added. When you consider TP’s electric club jams like “Make It Rain,” “You Don’t Know Bout it” and “Ayy Ladies,” then the Beasties comparison makes sense. In their early days, Mike D, Ad-Rock and MCA — who died following his struggle with cancer on Friday, were the ultimate party starters, and Travis Porter look to carry on that tradition. Ultimately, TP decided to name their upcoming May 29 debut From Day 1, but they still plan to honor the Beasties. “We named our tour No Sleep Till Atlanta though, still,” Ali said of their upcoming summer run, which will support the LP. DMC, a member of the iconic rap group Run-DMC , also appeared on “RapFix” and reacted to Yauch’s death and the Beastie Boys’ legacy. During the 1980s, Run-DMC and the Beastie Boys toured together and became fast friends. “The first thing that came to my mind was like, man, another one of us, it’s crazy. Adam Yauch is a member of one of the greatest groups ever in hip-hop, rock and roll history and music period,” he said. “He will be forever remembered as one of the greatest voices in hip-hop.” MTV News also spoke with Biz Markie on Friday about Yauch’s legacy. “He was in a class by himself. All three of them was in a class by themselves,” the iconic rapper/DJ said. “They were different, but he was a cool one and he was just different. He was from a different cloth, he had a different aura about him.
